View Full Version : EE overtaken by ED?
Emmerdale is preparing to dethrone EastEnders as the country's second most popular soap.
"About three years ago we said that there would come a day when Emmerdale overtook EastEnders and became the number two soap in Britain," wrote John Whiston, Granada's head of drama, in a leaked email published by the Media Guardian.
"It was just one of those things you say, like I bet Liverpool are going to win the Champions League. Be nice, but you don't really expect it to actually happen."
He added: "Well, with the story team on fire, the writers charging along brilliantly, a fantastic production team and a cast to die for, all I can say is... watch this space."
According to ratings share data, the pair were six percentage points apart in June 2004, a figure which has now dropped to just two points.

If it doesn't pick up by the time the Mitchell's get back, then I think it's definitely starting to head towards the axe! :crying:
Every soap has a "down" time - Eastenders will be back with a vengeance. I have never watched Emmerdale and never had the inclination to either and I would have thought a lot of people would be the same. Sorry Emmerdale fans, you may get the no 2 spot for a bit, but we'll be straight back into no 1 spot very soon!!!

EastEnders is miles better than Emmerdale. We've had "Who shot Phil" and "Who killed Den." Emmerdale has had nothing of the sort. The most exciting thing to happen in Emmerdale was Viv and Paddy's affair and thats saying something!

eastenders is much better than emmerdale sometimes if im doing something when emmerdale is on i think o well i cant be bothered watching it as its the same old boring stuff but if it is eastenders i am at the t.v within seconds!
maybe this will be the kick up the backside eastenders need.emmerdale is far more interesting then eastenders and has been for months.the big tell tail sign will be when the mitchells return, especially grant if the viewing figures dont go up then and stay up i think its drawing to a end to be honest.

Hear Hear.
I've been waiting for months for EE to get interesting again. Since the Den story (Which was ages ago now) its gone further and further down hill. Sure every sopa has its bad times, but months on end? For one of the best soaps in Britain, surely this isn't right.
Emmerdale has had some rubbish stories, like most soaps, but recently its been getting very good. Emmerdale is actually a good soap, but no body gived it ago because its set in the country and so everyone thinks its bad. Watch it and give it a go, then critise it if you still really dont like it
Come on EastEnders! I think that Emmerdale is ssssssssooooooooooooooooooo boring!
Well they do say the quality always rises to th the top. E dale deserves first place. EE is so trgic at the mo that no-one can honestly defend it. Its a pity that such a fantastic programme has been reduced to such drivel
Come on EastEnders! I think that Emmerdale is ssssssssooooooooooooooooooo boring!
Do you watch it then?
Emmerdale is by far superior to the present CACK that is EE.
Well i'll happily critisise EE, as i watch both.
Eastenders is boring compared. All they have is affairs and deaths. The affairs aren't even that good! They dont show any spirit any more. The classic families have broken up. Its a square of death and deceit. They need to lighten up, real life isn't always doom and gloom. I think Emmerdale gets the mix between old and young, births and death, marriages and affairs better than Eastenders. Emmerdale are getting a lot better, and their fan base is set to rise.
Watch out EE!

i agree with you i think both corrie and emmerdale are copying how ee used to be,and ee is like they used to be,and since christmas day which was pure ee it has now slipped and for me is showing little sign of improvment, and ee osession with the mitchells is going to ring them no luck at all

totally agree- i cant see how bringing in the mitchells with help- just alienate new veiwers
I didn't even really like hte mitchells, they tok over too much and bullied everyone. How bringing them back is meant to help i dont know!

the way corries slipping emmerdale could end up the number 1 soap,
very true,it would be great if it did go to number 1,it deserves it i think,ee has gone down and corrie is on iyts way there too, unless they hurry up and sort it out.

at least emmerdale give good storylines throygh the summer and don't just take it for granted we'll watch boring storylines out of loyalty
Emmerdale is by far superior to the present CACK that is EE.
Really? Audiences don't reflect this.
Emmerdale will never overtake EastEnders because of it's restrictive timeslot.
I find it beyond belief that these people are working for a corporation as huge as ITV with these levels of maturity. We will bring a show down etc so we can be no.2, we will pit two shows against eachother, we will overtake EastEnders, I could go on because over the past year they've said it and nothing has happened! They will never dethrone EastEnders when they can barely make double figures with their audience figures. The audience share and the viewing figures for all the soaps currently rest at about 8-9 million for Corrie, 7-8-9 million for EastEnders and 6-7-8 million for Emmerdale, they are all so close at the moment but in the winter it's a different story altogether. All I can say is Emmerdale are the ones who want to watch this space. I'm already writing a letter to the bigwigs at ITV explaining that the level of maturity of some of their staff is disgusting beyond stomachable belief.

come on eastenders
with storylines like they have got at the moment i wont be surprised if family affairs nicks the third spot putting them third lol :rotfl:
lol at the moment, nothing would surprise me
Surely them figures prove that despite the outrage of many EE viewers, Emmerdale is very, very close behind. There is no denying that. Eastenders need to pick up pace immedietly
well just think over the next week we have either demi and leo, yawn! or cain and the kings setting fire to andys barn and will he wont he survive, hmmm what to watch!!
Something tells me that my 7.00 will be more filled than 7.30/8.00.
Emmerdale is going to rock this week! Eastenders seriously needs to improve and fast

I have to admit it :(
Lets put it this way, if Eastenders dont pull something SENSATIONAL out of the bag in the next 1/2 weeks, then there will be some very unhappy EE producers...
with storylines like they have got at the moment i wont be surprised if family affairs nicks the third spot putting them third lol :rotfl:
or Doctors!
It would be funnier if it was Brookside... :rotfl:
sunset beach? lol that is better anyway!
or re-runs of Elderado!!!

Yes but along with that there has been a load of crap - Kidneys, funfairs, basketball teams MOLFIE KALFIE SHANNIS
Who shot Phil and all the great EE stories were a long time and many producers ago
exactly! what i like about emmerdale is they dont drag storylines on for too long! ok there is the exception of viv and paddy some might say but compared to alfie and mo it is nothing in comparison

Actually the head of production who has been re-instated has worked on EastEnders since the eighties and the Series Producer who has been re-stationed Lorraine Newman was also there during one of the many heydays so most of the good producers are back alongside John Yorke who is now running the whole thing. Kate Harwood also has a promising enough CV for me to realise there's nothing too major to worry about.

That's the audience share darling which means they got that percentage of the overall available audience. It's not the actual viewers that tuned into each show. Percentages are important but not too much.
Abi with all the X's, persuing sensationalism was a method used by LB which eventually put the show in the slump it's in now.

LB has been gone over 8 months and her episodes finished at christmas which were excellent,i hav't seen anything since thats been an improvment,if this carrys on it'll get to the point where people will not care if it's axed or not she may have made some errors ie the ferrersa but i'm not seeing anything now thats better than then,in fact it's boring me silly
LB's episodes didn't finish until November of last year.
Of course there's improvements, we don't have as much of that teenager brigade for starters. Plus characters are interacting more. Yes it's been hit and miss for a while now and some episodes are so lame they can drive you mental but the millions of viewers the show still continues to attract despite being in it's worst period ever is astonishing.

if you re watch the excellent christmas day episode you'll that was LBs last episde, after that everyone said watch for improvments, now thats a joke, they should win an award for sending people to sleep
I've just watched last nights episode again, I had a thumping headache the first time so only had the volume on 23 so I decided to watch again and I have to say it wasn't that bad upon reflection.
And the Christmas Day episode was by Kathleen Hutchison.
LB quit in September and her work continued until November and then there was no executive producer on the credits for a short while until Monday 20th December 2004 which is when Kathleen Hutchison became credited.
Last nights episode was one of them, see it then forget what happened half an hour later. I dont remember and it was only last night
off the top of your head, what actually happened? The main events and the main action
Emmerdale will never overtake EastEnders and that Kathleen Beedles is awful. Emmerdale has been dire since Charity left the sinking ship. That 4000th episode was laughable when Shelley the doll flew over the boat after Steph flicked her. OMG  what a mighty push *rolls eyes*
It's ridiculous and it's ailing and I for one am in this for the long haul as I bid it farewell when it eventually comes to an end :p
But as you said in another thread- hold optimism for Emmerdale, otherwise theirs no point watching it :D

well the veiwing figures for last week are in,apparently ee managed to beat emmerdale every night epcept for thursday when both soaps got 8.2 million,so emmerdale must still be improving and ee is still struggling considering they have only beat corrie once since chris

come on eastenders
Do you watch it then?
I end up watching it every Thursday because i visit my gran every Thursday and she loves it, but i am always bored out of my brains. The last episode that I enjoyed was when Steph killed Shelly, and that was months ago.

must admit i have never watched emmerdale and have no desire to do so....
however, i think it might overtake ee if the storylines dont pick up - although i dont think ee will ever be axed.
its a bit puzzling too, because ee have some great acting talents but they seem to be going to waste (eg kat, lil mo, johnny etc) the writers just cant seem to get the storylines right
Emmerdale is often winning in terms of audience share but that doesn't mean a thing. EastEnders is still ahead in terms of actual viewers which is considered the most important.
