View Full Version : Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey)
Coronation Street fans will find themselves shocked by a harrowing storyline that will highlight the dangers of 'skin bleaching' products.
Corrie bosses have taken the decision to show the effects of these products after 14-year-old Asha Alahan looks to bleach her skin so that she looks whiter.
Played by 16-year-old Tanisha Gorey, Asha will buy and try the cream after making the decision that she no longer wants to have an Indian appearance.
What Asha doesn't realise is that the illegal cream contains harmful chemicals that could poison her.
Corrie bosses want to highlight the upward trend of British teenagers using the products.
The creams work by breaking down the skin's natural defence to UV light and experts have warned that this can lead to severe blistering and burns, within days of using them.
Those who have used the products on a long-term basis have faced the prospect of kidney and liver failure.

Coronation Street has been working with the NSPCC over Asha Alahan's next major storyline.
In scenes airing later this month, Asha (Tanisha Gorey) performs a striptease for her new boyfriend Corey Brent while on a video call, but becomes devastated when images are leaked by Corey and spread around the school.
The ITV soap has worked with the children's charity in the past including for Bethany Platt's grooming ordeal. This time, it is consulting with NSPCC's senior policy officer Alana Ryan.
"We know that a third of all child sexual abuse is perpetrated by peers and this includes non-contact offences, such as the taking and sharing of sexual images without consent," Ryan said (via Manchester Evening News).
"When working with the team at Coronation Street, we really wanted to ensure young viewers understood that taking and sharing photos without permission is never acceptable.
"We also hoped to use the script to highlight how we all have a shared responsibility to support someone who has been the victim of non-consensual sexual image sharing."
Gorey recently discussed the storyline with The Mirror and how her character Asha struggles with what happens.
"It completely crumbles her, destroys her reputation, everything. People in the Street have seen her strip. Everyone has seen it and is talking about it," she said.
"She is bullied at school, ends up moving school. Walking down to Roy's Rolls, everyone is talking about Asha."

Coronation Street's Asha Alahan will find herself in danger next week as Roy Cropper's prison storyline continues to impact the street's residents.
After Sam Blakeman agrees to take Roy's dog Freddie for a walk, the pet disappears - and Roy's loved ones are horrified when internet sleuths post a video online in which they reveal that they're holding Freddie hostage until Roy confesses to killing Lauren Bolton.
Following the dognap, Asha decides to get in touch with the troll behind the video and she later confides in brother Aadi that the person threatening Freddie has responded to her.
Asha says that she's arranged to meet the individual at the precinct, and Aadi offers to go along with her.
Later on, Evelyn calls at the caf? with some 'missing' posters to display as attempts to find Freddie continue. She also brings a birthday card for Nina Lucas.
When Roy phones the caf? from prison to wish Nina a happy birthday, Nina pretends that Freddie is absolutely fine at home. She also reassures Roy that Dee-Dee Bailey is doing everything she can to secure his release from custody.
When Aadi later confirms that Amy Barlow's charity worker has had to pull out of an interview due to a crisis with a vulnerable family, Joel Deering reluctantly offers to help.
As Asha arrives at the precinct, there's no sign of Aadi ? so she repeatedly tries to call him.
Meanwhile, Amy gets ready to interview Aadi, who hasn't noticed multiple missed phone calls from Asha.
Just as Asha decides to head home, she's approached by 'TrueMan67' and his sidekick, 'Banditman'. They sit on either side of her and start to ask awkward questions, leaving Asha feeling increasingly scared.
Could Asha be in real danger? And how will Aadi feel when he realises that he missed the chance to help his sister?
