EastEnders' new boss Kate Oates has offered some early teasers on her plans for the show in 2019.

Oates has taken over as senior executive producer at the BBC soap following her successful stints in charge of Emmerdale and Coronation Street.

Speaking to Digital Spy and others at an EastEnders Christmas press event this week, Oates named some characters worth keeping an eye on in the New Year.

"It's going to be a big year for the Slaters," she explained. "Jean's going to have a bit of a new challenge coming her way, but she may find that it's the best thing that ever happened to her. There's some fun stuff to challenge her there, along with Lacey [Turner, who plays Stacey].

"We're bringing Mitch back. A secret that he's bringing with him – a little surprise – will be a little bomb to go off in the Taylor family. We're stretching that family as ever. They're going to be as rowdy and larger-than-life as you have come to love them.

"We're also going to be playing more of that amazing love triangle that Keanu has fallen into. It's going to get really messy. Sharon does not know what she's unleashed, but maybe she won't be the one who ends up with his heart, so we'll see how that ends up."

Oates has recently been working alongside John Yorke, who stands down as executive consultant at the end of this week.

It's already been announced that Casualty story producer Jon Sen will be moving over to EastEnders as executive producer, helping to execute Oates's vision for the show.

Oates added: "I'm really excited to be here. I'm having a really nice time. I'm really excited about next year and I'm excited to work with Jon Sen. I think he's going to be a fantastic exec for the show."

EastEnders has cast a brand new trio of brothers who are heading to Walford later this year – and they soon find themselves clashing with an existing Albert Square clan! The Panesars are a British Asian family of the Sikh faith and are formed of siblings Kheerat, Jags and Vinny. The show describes the brothers as ‘charming by nature – but a force to be reckoned with’ and has teased that they will immmediately get on the wrong side of an established family in the area.

The Panesars will arrive in autumn.

EastEnders story editor Ben Wadey has revealed the soap's plans to introduce a new bisexual character.

Wadey posted on Twitter on Thursday (September 5) to announce the news in somewhat cryptic fashion.

"Been great to see all the positive reaction to LGBTQ+ representation on EastEnders recently, and excited for us to have a new B in the show soon," he wrote.

The 'B' in Wadey's tweet is obviously referring to the 'bisexual' in LGBTQ+ and, while he doesn't specifically state it, it seems safe to assume he's talking about the addition of a new character.

The BBC soap has been working to increase LGBTQ+ inclusivity on the show, having recently introduced Walford's first gay bar.

Back in January, the soap's boss Kate Oates discussed her plans improve to its LGBTQ+ representation, explaining that the new bar would act as a cool alternative to the Queen Vic.

"I'm really interested in bringing some more LGBTQ characters in," the producer told The Sun. "We're looking at opening a gay bar on the Square which will be a super-cool precinct where gay and straight characters can all just hang out."

She added: "It's an important move for the show to authentically reflect modern London life."

If it's a woman they could call her Sonia; if it's a man they could call him Callum.

EastEnders is on top form at the moment, and now we've all been left suitably impressed by the soap's big Autumn week our attentions are turning towards Christmas and all of the brilliant, soapy drama that will bring.

But what can we expect from Albert Square's 2019 festive outing? Well, most of the details have been kept under wraps so far – there's still more than three months to go, after all – but boss Kate Oates did reveal some of the characters we can expect to be at the centre of the action.

And yep, it's the return of everyone's favourite, messiest affair: Sharon Mitchell and Keanu Taylor.

"Sheanu is going to blow up," Kate Oates told Digital Spy and other media at a recent EastEnders press screening. "I think it's safe to say that's going to be pretty big at Christmas time..."

But there are also still lots of other plots and storylines to explore before we get to that point, with Kate and EastEnders' executive producer Jon Sen citing Chantelle and Gray Atkins' domestic violence storyline and Tiff Butcher and Keegan Baker's romance as big plots to watch out for.

"We've got some great stuff with Chantelle and Gray, that storyline will be continuing," Kate said of what's in store for the next few months.

"It's the EastEnders tradition of stories which explore really important issues and we are going to be pushing that story. We've been building it quite gently, very deliberately and building the public perception within the Square of the kind of man Gray is and the kind of marriage they have."

Jon added: "Tiff and Keegan's burgeoning romance, that's lovely. It's a wonderful dynamic, superbly performed by those two. There's a real chemistry between them, loads of warmth and heart and we're really investing in that."

Jon also promised that Honey Mitchell will "take action" over Adam Bateman cheating on her, adding: "There's no doubt about it."

Meanwhile, Kate also teased that the next few months will build on what's come before, promising an interesting mix of characters, stories for old favourites and the return of great guest stars too.

"I will just say that it's echoing what I said earlier, it's momentum really echoing through," Kate explained. "It feels like every story meeting we're jam-packed with stuff and there's a real nice mix of tones.

"There's some really refreshing character dynamics as well – we're putting together certain characters that feel really right but that maybe haven't interacted before so that really mixes things up.

"We've got some lovely stuff coming up for the Slaters and Gillian did such a great job with the cancer story, that's not over yet, we're going to be seeing more of Adrian Edmondson so that's really exciting. So we're having a nice time really."

Yes, that is true and let's hope they keep it this way and not fall for the normal soap tradition of wrecking their relationship with an affair or something similar. Please, please just for once, let a couple be happy!
