Tyrone and Fiz are set to have their lives turned "upside down"
Tyrone Dobbs has got an interesting time ahead of him, as Maureen Lipman is set to join the cast of Coronation Street as his grandmother.
It was confirmed today (August 3) that the popular actress will be joining the Corrie family as the "outspoken battleaxe" Evelyn Plummer.
Evelyn is set to make her entrance on the cobbles after Tyrone decides to research his family history following the recent shock death of his mum Jackie.
Getting more than he and Fiz Stape bargained for, Tyrone will soon be welcoming his grandmother into number 9 – and it sounds like Evelyn will waste no time in making herself comfortable. And a bit of a nuisance.
Corrie's producer Iain MacLeod said that he was "beyond thrilled" to be introducing the new character. "Evelyn is eye-wateringly withering and will add a fresh dollop of northern humour to the show as she turns Tyrone and Fiz's lives upside down," he teased.
Eagle-eyed fans may have already spotted as much, but Evelyn Plummer isn't Maureen's first role on Coronation Street, as the actress made a brief appearance as landlady Lillian Spencer in 2002.
Lipman has had an illustrious career, starring in the likes of Roman Polanski's The Pianist, Educating Rita and Oklahoma. She has also trodden the boards in more than 25 West End productions and appeared on the small screen in the likes of Doctor Who, Casualty and Holby City, so fans are in for a right treat with Evelyn.
Maureen Lipman will make her first appearance on the cobbles this September.

a grumpy old battle axe is just what the show needs
Coronation Street newcomer Maureen Lipman has revealed that her battleaxe alter ego Evelyn will be at the centre of Fiz Brown’s upcoming leaving storyline – as Tyrone’s acid tongued granny will drive her away! Evelyn is a force to be reckoned with when Tyrone and Fiz meet her but when Tyrone finds out she is being evicted, he insists that she comes to stay – something which doesn’t go down too well with Fiz. And soon it will become too much for her to cope with. Maureen warned: ‘Fiz doesn’t stand a chance no one was ever going to be good enough for Tyrone, not that she thinks he is good enough either but she has a grudging liking for this boy and she thinks that the woman he is with is boring. She sets out to drive her away just by being ungracious and critical and generally driving a wedge between them which is a horrible thing to do but there are people like that’

Coronation Street star Maureen Lipman teases Fiz Stape's exit as Evelyn Plummer gets nastier
Coronation Street newcomer Maureen Lipman has dropped some new hints on Fiz Stape's exit storyline.
Jennie McAlpine, who plays Fiz, has now gone on maternity leave to welcome the arrival of her second child and her departure scenes will air in a few weeks' time.
Show bosses recently brought in Maureen as Tyrone Dobbs's outspoken grandmother Evelyn Plummer, who's already causing tensions on the cobbles.
Over the next few weeks, Evelyn will step up her attempts to cause major problems between Tyrone and Fiz, threatening their relationship.
Maureen told TV Times: "Fiz doesn't stand a chance. Evelyn has a grudging liking for Tyrone, and she thinks Fiz is boring.
"She sets out to drive her away by being critical and ungracious, and generally driving a wedge between them."
One of Evelyn's sneaky moves includes stealing some of Fiz and Tyrone's belongings for herself at Number 9 – but could she just be getting started with her outrageous behaviour?
Speaking to What's On TV earlier this year, Maureen confirmed: "Evelyn and Fiz are definitely going to clash. Fiz's departure from the Street will involve Evelyn, her boorish behaviour will definitely be what drives her out."
Jennie and her husband Chris Farr are already parents to 3-year-old son Albert, who was born in November 2014.

They should bring Arthur back. It would be nice if it was revealed that Arthur was Tyrone's grandfather.

Coronation Street star Dame Maureen Lipman is set to take a brief break from the soap later this year.
The actress has played the role of Evelyn Plummer on the cobbles since 2018, and did take a brief break last year to star in a one-woman play called Rose.
A source has now confirmed to Digital Spy that Lipman will be taking another four-week break later this year, with the actress set to bring Rose to the West End.
The news comes after Lipman confirmed last summer that she had signed a year-long extension contract with Coronation Street.
"I won't hear a word against it. It's full of quite exceptional actors working with very little rehearsal, very little direction," she told Reader's Digest at the time.
"Am I envious of some of my peers? Sometimes, yes. Do I have the right to be? Of course not. Would I like to be in Sex Education? Yes, of course. Am I sorry I've signed up with Corrie for another year? No, I'm not."
As well as her turn on the cobbles, Lipman has been well-known for appearing on Celebrity Gogglebox in recent years, though said she was leaving in December 2021, criticising the editing on the Channel 4 series.
"I went in imagining that they wanted me for my wit and my brain," she later explained to Radio Times. "Of course, they just want to show you willies and for you to be shocked.
"Honestly, we were really funny together, but none of that was used. And if they don't want to use what we gave them, f**k them."

Coronation Street has announced Evelyn Plummer's next storyline, as she finds herself in danger after a confrontation with a stranger.
The ITV show will be delving deeper into Evelyn's relationship with her troubled daughter Cassie as the new plot brings them closer together.
Viewers will see the story begin shortly before Christmas, as Evelyn confronts a man for mistreating his dog.
The clash has unexpected consequences, setting off a major chain of events.
Speaking to Digital Spy and other media in a recent press call, Coronation Street's producer Iain MacLeod commented: "We thought: 'What do the viewers love?' Essentially, we whittled the list down to 'they love Evelyn' and 'they love dogs', because who doesn't love dogs? We thought: 'Let's do a story about that'.
"It ends up in quite serious territory. But to start with, Evelyn makes herself a bit of an enemy in the shape of a fella that she sees mistreating his dog. It starts with that relatively small moment, where they cross paths at the precinct and some cross words are exchanged.
"It goes from there to a situation that ends up with court appearances, trips to the hospital and really quite serious danger for both Evelyn and Cassie."

Former Brookside star Claire Sweeney made her first appearance as Cassie in June.
Cassie has bonded with her son Tyrone in recent months, but her relationship with Evelyn has often appeared frosty.
MacLeod continued: "It's a chance to explore more of Evelyn's relationship with Cassie, which since Cassie was a teenager has been very bad tempered and with lots of estrangement.
"They find themselves on the same team, for the most part, in this story. Cassie takes things too far, which causes some serious strife for Evelyn. That threatens to set their relationship back again.

"But by the end of it all, they've achieved a new level of equilibrium and a new understanding of each other. To some extent, they've got to know each other as grown-ups for the first time. So there's lots going on in that.
"It starts off with this relatively innocuous seeming exchange, with Evelyn and Roy taking on this man about how he's treating his dog. Then suddenly you find yourself in the midst of this really serious story.
"I love stories like that ? that start off with an acorn of something and suddenly you've got this forest of bad outcomes for all our favourite characters."

Coronation Street is lining up a new rift between Evelyn Plummer and daughter Cassie.
The ITV soap has kicked off a new dognapping storyline this week, as Evelyn ends up taking a dog off villainous new character Terry after seeing him mistreating the animal.
Yet Evelyn puts herself in danger by crossing Terry as he starts to threaten her and her family, with the storyline leading to Evelyn and Cassie discovering a puppy farm.
However, while mother and daughter join forces, star Dame Maureen Lipman has revealed that it won't be the start of a positive step in their relationship.
"I can tell you that that does not last because Cassie is a chip off the old block but to some degree an extended version of Evelyn and she goes too far and that endangers Evelyn's life and gets her into more trouble," she explained.
"Blood is thicker than water in Coronation Street but they do fall out over this, even though they are in it together, simply because she goes farther than Evelyn would have done."
The soap has been collaborating with animal welfare charity the RSPCA on the new storyline, with Lipman recently revealing that she was shocked to learn about some of the facts around puppy farms.
"I did some research of my own and was shocked by what I discovered," she admitted. "I had not realised that these puppies are sold for ?2,000 a throw and these people are not registered and they're earning billions with puppy farms springing up all over the place."

Dame Maureen Lipman will be taking another break from Coronation Street.
A spokesperson for the ITV1 soap has confirmed to Digital Spy that Dame Maureen will reprise her role as Evelyn Plummer following some time away from the cobbles.
"Dame Maureen is taking a sabbatical from Coronation Street towards the end of the year. We look forward to seeing her back on the cobbles in 2025," a show spokesperson told us.
Dame Maureen's break will coincide with the esteemed actor performing in panto ? as she has signed on for the Richmond Theatre's production of Beauty and the Beast.
She will be playing Mrs Potty opposite comedian and magician Pete Firman from Saturday, December 7, 2024, through Sunday, January 5, 2025. Tickets are available now from ATG for ?13 and up (subject to a transaction fee of ?3.95).
Dame Maureen has taken sporadic breaks from Coronation Street throughout her time on the cobbles, including a temporary departure last year following the arrival of her long-lost daughter Cassie.
At the time of her 2023 break, the actor said she'd been doing some of the most intensive filming of her soap career to set up her departure.
"They?ve really put me through it the last few weeks. I?ve had seven scenes to learn a day," she recalled. ?The last shot [from] last night, I literally laid on the floor and said: ?I can?t go on'."
Since her return to Weatherfield, Evelyn Plummer was involved in a nasty feud with a dodgy dog breeder and supported Roy Cropper in his recent prison stint.
Dame Maureen joined the ITV1 soap on a full-time basis in 2018 as Tyrone Dobbs' grandmother, after a prior stint in 2002 playing a different character.

Coronation Street star Dame Maureen Lipman has spoken about her character's upcoming exit plot for the first time.
Back in July, it was revealed that Dame Maureen will be taking a sabbatical from her role as Evelyn Plummer later this year.
Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy on the red carpet at the Inside Soap Awards on Monday evening (September 30), Dame Maureen promised that the door will be left open for Evelyn to return down the line.
She quipped: "Well the idea is that I don't get killed off, battered or thrown into Manchester Ship Canal. But I just step back ? something happens to me and I go off, but always with the option that I can come back.
"Because you don't want to lose? I don't want to lose Evelyn! You know that song, 'I Know Him So Well'?
"Sometimes the scripts are wonderful and sometimes they're fine but Evelyn always comes out with the right quip at the right time."
Asked whether she still enjoys her time on the show, Dame Maureen replied: "I love it, yeah. Actors like to have a family around them. It's nice to walk into a Manchester building and have someone say: 'Oh hello, Maureen, did you have a nice weekend?' I like that."
Dame Maureen was speaking following the news that she had won the Best Comedy Performance prize at the Inside Soap Awards.
Impressively, this is the fourth consecutive year that she has taken the award home.
Reflecting on this year's victory, Dame Maureen added: "It's an audience award, so they're voting for Evelyn Plummer, not really for Maureen Lipman!
"That's the way it should be. She's a good character for Corrie. She's classic Corrie ? and she doesn't murder anybody and she doesn't do autopsies on people.
"She's just not very kosher, you know ? she's just a bit belligerent. People like that because everybody really wants to be belligerent but they haven't got the guts!"
When Dame Maureen's Corrie sabbatical was first announced in July, a spokesperson for the show told Digital Spy: "Dame Maureen is taking a sabbatical from Coronation Street towards the end of the year. We look forward to seeing her back on the cobbles in 2025."
The Inside Soap Awards took place in London and saw Corrie win six prizes on the night, including the coveted Best Soap gong.
