Coronation Street boss Kate Oates has revealed that two new female characters are heading to the cobbles this Spring.

First up is Emma Brooker, a trainee hairdresser who starts an apprenticeship at the salon. She’s played by Alexandra Mardell, who had a guest role in the Brenda Blethyn crime drama, Vera, last year.
She’ll be followed by a character called Kayla, played by Mollie Winnard – who has previously starred in the Kay Mellor drama Love, Lies and Records.
“Kayla will be working in Speed Daal (Zeedan Nazir’s new restaurant),” reveals Corrie producer, Kate Oates. “She’s going to be causing trouble for Bethany and Craig…”
Meanwhile, show bosses have also confirmed the return of two old faces to the Street in the Summer. Nigel Havers will be reprising his role as dastardly Lewis Archer – the conman who famously swindled Gail Platt in 2013, before fleeing to Belize.

Upcoming drama for Emma will see her caught in the crossfire when war breaks out at the salon as rival stylist Claudia tries to pinch Maria out from under Audrey’s nose. So whose side will Emma be on? “She doesn’t want to take sides, but she can see that Audrey is clinging on for dear life. Emma is just trying to keep the peace as much as possible.
“But it’s great for me because I got to share a scene with Rula Lenska, who’s a legend. It doesn’t come much better than being in a scene with both her and Sue. I’m being spoilt.”
And as for life away from Audrey’s, Emma will receive romantic attention from Seb Franklin, with viewers set to wonder whether he’ll reveal all about his recent HIV diagnosis. “I think she’d be very open-minded if she were to find out. But she probably wouldn’t understand it fully – that could be more of an issue! There are certainly lots of complications when it comes to Seb – Faye’s still interested in him, for a start.” #coronationstreet #corrie

Coronation Street actress Alexandra Mardell has weighed in on a huge fan theory regarding her character Emma Brooker.
Apprentice hairdresser Emma arrived on the cobbles earlier this year and had a brief fling with David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) as part of his sexual assault storyline, but since her first episode Corrie fans have been convinced that Emma is actually Fiona Middleton's (Angela Griffin) secret daughter.
Griffin played Fiona on the show for six years between 1992 and 1998, during which time the hairdresser had an ill-fated affair with Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) – which, according to some viewers, led to Emma:

But, Mardell has now responded to the theory and she has completely shot it down. Sorry to burst your bubble, everyone.
"I've heard the Fiona and Steve's daughter theory, but that's definitely not true," Mardell explained to The Sun. "She's just come to the Street to work at Audrey's as an apprentice and learn as much as she can.
"She's independent and was living with friends before arriving but she is still in contact with her mum but just doing it for herself at the minute at the Salon."

But while Emma may not be Fiona's secret love child, actress Mardell did confirm that she knows Angela Griffin and that the two of them shared a laugh about the theories doing the rounds.
"I did have a little chat and a joke with Angela Griffin about it and that was quite funny," she added.

Emma has made such a splash on the cobbles that soap bosses recently extended Alexandra Mardell's contract for another six months, meaning Emma will be on Corrie for the foreseeable future.

Emma Brooker (Alexandra Mardell) has had plenty to deal with in Coronation Street this past year —between the death of her dad to discovering that her real father is none other then Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) — but could there be more heartache ahead for the character as she falls ill in a devastating new storyline?
Emma’s world came crashing down earlier this year when she learned that her dad was dying. If that wasn’t a hard enough pill for her to swallow, her dad’s death also brought with it the shocking revelation that she wasn’t actually his biological daughter — meaning that mum Fiona (Angela Griffin) had lied to her all these years.
Audrey (Sue Nicholls) put two and two together when she realised that Fiona was Emma’s mum, and thus it soon came to light that Steve is the young girl’s real father. Emma struggled to process this news at first, but her and Steve have finally bonded. However, things could be set to take a devastating turn in the coming weeks, as Emma fall ill.
The Sun reports that Emma will begin to feel unwell, and thus she’ll head to the medical centre to get checked out. However, upon doing so, she collapses in pain, and Gary (Mikey North) later finds her unconscious.
Her symptoms will be a great cause for concern for her family, who begin to fear that she’s inherited Jim’s (Charles Lawson) illness — myotonic dystrophy.
A source told The Sun: ‘Emma’s not going to understand what’s wrong with her but her dad Steve knows only too well what it could be.’
‘Jim’s illness skipped a generation with Steve but the possibility of it affecting Emma is almost too much to contemplate.’
If it does transpire that Emma has inherited myotonic dystrophy, the big question is whether or not we’ll see Jim return to the cobbles as a result?
The Weatherfield legend caused quite a stir the last time he was on the Street, so he may not be welcome.
Having said that, a lot has happened since he departed, so could he perhaps be on hand to offer Emma some support should it be revealed that she is suffering from the same illness as him?

Coronation Street's Emma Brooker is set to find love in the New Year as part of a "massive" storyline.
Speaking to The Sun, Corrie boss Iain MacLeod teased the new storyline for Emma (played by Alexandra Mardell), saying she's "going to get the man of her dreams" in upcoming episodes.
"There?s what I think will be a really brilliant storyline for Emma but I can?t talk about it in a lot of detail without giving it away," he said.
"There?s a massive new love story for Emma. Emma wants her prince charming and she?s going to get her wish, but it?s going to be a very interesting version of her wish.
"She?s going to get the man of her dreams."
Emma has previously been pretty unlucky in love, first falling for David Platt when she arrived on the cobbles.
She then fell for Chesney Brown, before realising that Gemma Winter was the person he was meant to be with.
Emma later started a romance with Seb Franklin but things were severely complicated due to the arrival of his ex, Alina Pop.
Earlier this month, Alexandra reflected on her two years spent playing Emma on the cobbles and admitted she hopes there's still plenty of juicy storylines to come for her character.
"I love playing Emma. I'd not done much comedy so I was a bit worried about her silly ways but I've really enjoyed it," she said in an interview with The Mirror.
"She has the best of both worlds now ? sometimes she's comedy, sometimes it's tragedy."
Making it clear that she has no plans to leave the cobbles anytime soon, she added: "I am hoping there's many more years for me and more to come from Emma."

But Steve McDonald is less than impressed when he realises he recognises the trainee doctor, named Curtis who gets a job in the Bistro.
Emma is delighted when a good looking young man offers to help her move some barrels into the cellar, but Steve is furious when he spots her having a drink with Curtis, the hooligan who knocked him off his bike - causing him to come last in the charity fundraiser.
When Amy tentatively suggests that he is becoming a bit obsessed with his fundraising and worries he is heading for another breakdown, Steve realises she has a point.
