Coronation Street is lining up a dramatic car chase between Luke Britton and killer Pat Phelan in the New Year.

Connor McIntyre and Dean Fagan – who play Phelan and Luke respectively – have been spotted on location filming the action sequence in two vehicles.

The pictures show Phelan frantically pursuing Luke's car, before overtaking him and grinding the chase to a halt.

Fans will have to wait and see what prompts the tense chase, but it confirms that Luke will become central to Phelan's dark story as it continues to unfold.

It's already been suggested that Luke could be the next character to get dragged into Phelan's web as he continues to ask awkward questions about Andy Carver's disappearance.

Suspicious after learning that Andy didn't move to Bristol in January like everyone first thought, Luke becomes increasingly determined to try and track his old friend down.

Of course in doing this, Luke is unwittingly getting himself into serious danger with Phelan – who murdered Andy after holding him hostage for months.

But has Luke discovered the truth about Phelan's killer antics? Or is there another reason behind the dramatic car chase?

Same here Swim, I'm waiting to hear the dreaded soap phrase, " It will end in the spring". Which is the soap code for about June.

There is still no guarantee that this saga will ever end, never mind in the New Year or Spring or even June. So Phelan captures Luke and either murders him and locks him up as a prisoner somewhere and off we go again until he finds his next victim......

Coronation Street boss Kate Oates has promised "a lot of trouble" for Michelle Connor when her son Ryan returns to Weatherfield this year.

The show has announced plans for Ryan to arrive back on the cobbles after more than four years away, with the role being recast for a second time.

Ryan's reappearance ties in with Corrie revisiting Michelle's historical baby swap storyline. Michelle gave birth to Ali Neeson in 1992, but he was switched with Ryan due to a mix-up at the hospital – which she only discovered in 2007.

Viewers have already recently seen Ali reintroduced, with James Burrows taking over the part. With Ryan following next, the stage seems set for a brand new chapter of drama.

Kate told Digital Spy: "I love the whole Ryan/Ali dynamic. Ryan is an Ibiza club DJ and Ali is a doctor, very serious and possibly a little bit darker.

"It's interesting to see how they fit in with Michelle. I think they're going to cause her a lot of trouble – which is great for Kym. She plays it well!"

Ryan was played by Sol Heras when he was last seen in 2013, but the show has already cast a new actor to take over the role.

As well as Ryan's return and the upcoming arrival of Liz McDonald's next love interest Mike, plans are already being made for two new characters.

Kate added: "We've got Kayla – she will be causing trouble for Bethany and Craig.

"We've also got Emma, she's going to be at the salon and ruffling David's feathers."

There's nothing like the return of a classic character to shake things up in soapland and it looks like Coronation Street will have some old feet walking the cobbles before too long.

But your guess as to who the returning character could be is as good as ours, at this stage.

Corrie boss Kate Oates told the Daily Star Sunday: "We are having a discussion about bringing someone back. It's a very well-established character... a long-standing name.

Related: Coronation Street star Mark Eden wishes iconic villain Alan Bradley could have returned

"It wouldn't be for a long period. It would be a short stint. I can't say more than that at this stage. But fans should watch this space."

Names flying about include everyone from Jim McDonald, Les Battersby and Jason Grimshaw to Emily Bishop, Curly Watts and Bet Lynch.

There's a bit of space opening up in Weatherfield, of course, with the upcoming departure of Aidan Connor after three years in the soap.

Fellow stars gave shoutouts to actor Shayne Ward last week after his Corrie leaving party.

Christmas in soapland is always a difficult time, full of death, drama and break-ups for our favourite characters.

But with just over 11 weeks to go until the big day, Coronation Street's new boss Iain MacLeod is preparing to set the stage for the special festive episode.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press, MacLeod revealed that the build-up to the holidays will begin on the cobbles this week and the Christmas Day episode will feature warm and lighthearted moments and be as festive as possible.

"The seeds of the stories for Christmas are in next week's episodes," he said. "Without giving too much away. I wanted it to be a Christmassy Christmas.

"Obviously there's a history in the soap of trying to go and do the Angie and Den Christmas where it's all acrimony and divorce papers and vitriol.

"That's not really my preference, when you sit down as you try and digest your stuffing balls and sprouts, you need it to be warm and lighthearted in places and you need it to wreak of Christmas."

But that doesn't mean it will be without drama.

"So, it'll be a Christmassy Christmas," MacLeod continued.

"It'll have some big, heart-breaking stories within that, it'll have a big shock at the end and hopefully it'll be a surprising payoff to those stories that you'll see the inception of next week."

Let the countdown officially begin!

Soap fans have only just recovered from the drama of Corrie’s epic stunt week, but that’s not going to stop us from looking forward to the next big event on the soap calendar… Christmas! And Amy Barlow will be key this festive season in Coronation Street!

Soaps are renowned for pulling out all the stops at this time of year, allowing us to enjoy some gripping Yuletide drama as we digest our turkey dinners… and Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod has promised that drama in Weatherfield will be just as exciting as ever.

We caught up with the big boss himself at a recent press event to get the scoop on what we can expect on the cobbles this Christmas…

“We have got a huge new chapter for Daniel and Sinead,” he teased. But they’re not the only characters at the centre of the festive episodes.

There is also one unlikely character that is set to take centre stage… “We have got great things coming up at Christmas for Amy Barlow,” Iain revealed. But what could Amy be caught up in by December?

Is it anything to do with her mum and dad’s recent doomed wedding day? Or is there something entirely different on the cards for the young character?

But it’s not just the more youthful members of the cast who will be getting the chance to shine… “In the new year we have got a huge storyline that is set to run for some time for some of our older cast members,” Iain hinted.

While the new Corrie boss might be remaining tight-lipped over any more details for the Christmas season, he did also reveal that the events of stunt week will still be causing a ripple effect by Christmas.

The huge Connor car tragedy that saw Ryan and Leanne rushed to hospital, as well as Ali desperately trying to save his family by killing vengeful Ronan, will clearly be causing trouble of the cobbles for some time yet.

But fear not – Iain also promised that it is going to be a traditional Christmas in Corrie… “I wanted it to be a Christmassy Christmas, and there will be warmth and light-heartedness amongst the drama.”

Coronation Street teases shock Christmas collapse for Jenny Connor
Don't worry, it's Gemma to the rescue...

Elsewhere, Audrey Roberts and Lewis Archer are delivering some news to the Platt family, and Shona Ramsey in particular does not look impressed.

And finally, Tracy Barlow looks equally unimpressed while Steve McDonald does that elongated sighing face that he does so well.

What else can we expect from the most wonderful time of the year? Boss man Iain MacLeod (pictured below) told Digital Spy and other press outlets: "It'll have some big, heart-breaking stories within that, it'll have a big shock at the end and hopefully it'll be a surprising payoff.
