ENGAGED IN BATTLE
There are spats and slaps between lovers Sharon and Dennis over leaving Walford, and then he finally proposes
If gangster Johnny Allen is a hard man, then that little squirt Beale The Squeal is a certainty for the Mr Universe title.

With Danny and Jake left staring down the business end of a shooter last night after Johnny’s house was torched, their fate relies on him having the bottle to squeeze the trigger. While he’d have trouble pulling a Christmas cracker, his moll Tina is sure they’re brown bread. For why else would he have a smokin’ gun in his pocket? And no, he isn’t pleased to see her, either.

Like the Moon brothers, Sharon and Dennis are another couple who have outstayed their welcome, at least as far as Chrissie is concerned. A couple of nights at the Vic sees them still there almost a month later, with Shazza now so at home it’s a wonder she hasn’t had her hair permed and dug out that fluffy pink jumper she was wearing 20 years ago.

With secret plans to sell the pub and scarper, Chrissie may be tempted to extend that concrete tomb to family size and ruthlessly ensure the adopted daughter and his son join Dead Den. Instead she’s much more subtle.

With Dennis still eager to leave, the Walford Witch casts a poisonous spell of distrust between the lovers by telling him that Sharon is planning a big wedding. And he isn’t best pleased.

‘I’ve ’ad a gutful of it,’ he rages during one battle. ‘So go an’ get yer toothbrush, an’ yer knickers, an’ yer hair-straighteners, an’ bung ’em in a bag, ’cos we’re outta ’ere.’

Written by Enders’ very best writer, Sarah Phelps, Thursday and Friday’s excellent episodes are packed with spats and slaps, tears and tantrums. With Nigel Harman (Dennis) and Letitia Dean (Sharon) on superb form, they are also hysterically funny, with wicked one-liners flying off the walls like the glasses Shaz throws.

And when Dennis realises Sharon’s real feelings about marriage, he’s a little put out.

‘So, you don’t wanna get married? Why not?’ he asks.

‘I’ve bin there, done it, an’ it was a slow-motion car crash,’ she shrugs. ‘But that was to Grunt,’ he sneers. ‘We’re both ’ere for the long haul, ain’t we? Besides, I fancy ’avin’ a missus. I fancy my missus. Marry me.’

But getting engaged doesn’t delight Chrissie. So let’s hope she doesn’t give them a gift-wrapped doorstop, then…

ALSO

Just after the wonderful Demi has persuaded her folks to accept Leo as her boyfriend, he gets into a bloody fight with her bruv Diddy Darren. ‘One day ’e will do that to you,’ Keef shouts. ‘Then ’e will do it to Aleesha. You give ’im anuvver chance? I wouldn’t be able to live with meself.’

DENNIS has always been a love 'em and leave 'em kind of guy – until he lost his heart to his adopted sister Sharon.
And this week he shocks her, and himself, with a sudden marriage proposal. And she is delighted to say yes.

"It's great, but it all comes out of a huge, ridiculous row,” says Nigel Harman, who plays Dennis. "They almost split up, but by the end of the week they're engaged!"

At the start of the week, Dennis wants to move on, but he's annoyed that Sharon seems to be settling back into Walford for good.

"Dennis notices that Sharon has slipped back into life in Walford," says Nigel. "He realises her home is Walford and always will be.

"But Dennis hates the place. So many terrible things have happened since he first arrived two years ago, and they’re not things he wants to remember."

Sharon admits to Chrissie that she wants to stay a bit longer and asks if she can bring her things out of storage.

"Dennis isn't happy," explains Nigel. "Seeing Sharon's things back in the Vic makes him feel like they really are back for good."

Sharon confesses to Chrissie that she's been considering marriage to Dennis. And to cause trouble between them, Chrissie deliberately lets slip Sharon's dreams to Dennis.

"Dennis is really angry," says Nigel. "It's not what Sharon's said, it's that she's never told him about how she feels.

"He feels Sharon isn't telling him everything."

Chrissie's revelation causes a lot of friction between the pair. Later in the week they end up having a fierce argument upstairs in the Vic as Dennis demands that they leave the Square right there and then.
The two almost come to blows.
And in her frustration Sharon throws a glass at him. Dennis threatens to leave, but Sharon walks out and hides at the allotment, furious that he doesn’t follow her.

After taking cash from the safe at the bookies, Dennis goes to the travel agent’s to get the tickets.

Meanwhile, determined to have it out with Dennis, Sharon returns to the Vic. But when she finds his passport gone she panics, thinking that he has walked out on her.

The battling couple end up having a showdown at the bookies. Sharon lashes out at Dennis when he finally reveals what Chrissie said to him about Sharon's feelings on marriage. Sharon protests she doesn’t want to get married, but he instantly proposes and she accepts.

"They go into the Vic and tell Chrissie they're going to get married," says Nigel. "It's a real shock for Chrissie because she thought she'd got rid of them."

I wish all the writers wrote to her standards. She just gets everything spot on -character consistency, dialogue -everything. She certainly knows the character well enough to write about them. She wrote the Den vs Dennis two hander last year and that goes down as one of my favourites and she wrote the Dennis and Sharon two hander when he confessed to murder.

With ee, different writers often write for different families, storylines depending on how well they know them and how good they are. Sarah Phelps has done a lot of Watts stuff in the past. Including the above and the whole week when Den came out of his grave. Tony Jordan is another excellent writer and he writes a lot of Slater stuff but he is a more a story consultant now that a writer.

no Sarah Phelps all the way.

Tony Jordan is excellent though (not as good as SP though) but he is more a Slater family wirtter although he has done it for other families too. Where as Sarah, knows the Watts characteristics inside out and never fails to deliver, especially when it come to writting about shannis.

She just HAS to do the wedding, but I'll love it anyway.
