Neighbours fans have been given an early Christmas treat, as the show has released a very exciting promo for Izzy Hoyland's long-awaited return.

It was announced back in October that Natalie Bassingthwaighte is reprising her popular role as homewrecker Izzy for an extended guest appearance next year.

Izzy will be making her much-anticipated comeback in an unmissable one-hour special airing in February next year, where she'll be going head to head with Susan and Karl Kennedy.

The promo hints that Izzy's arrival will turn the couple's lives upside down once again – but why is she back?

Izzy appeared in Neighbours between 2003 and 2007, and is probably best remembered for breaking up the show's iconic couple, Karl and Susan Kennedy.

Speaking about her return, Natalie said previously: "I had the most extraordinary time working on Neighbours all those years ago with mentors like Alan Fletcher, Jackie Woodburne and Stefan Dennis. I feel really blessed to have had the opportunity to learn my craft on the show and I'm so excited to be back on set."

Neighbours' executive producer Jason Herbison added: "Izzy is Ramsay Street's ultimate homewrecker, and her homecoming to Ramsay Street will be explosive.

"We've been in talks with Natalie about returning for quite some time and I'm thrilled that it's finally come together. She's a fearless performer and a dynamic on-screen presence. Seeing her on set with Alan and Jackie this week, there's no doubt the magic is still there."

I can't stand her, hope she's not around for too long.

I didn’t watch Neighbours for many years and got back into it about 18 months ago. I’ve not really seen much of Izzy, apart from a few clips here and there. I look forward to seeing her return as I’m a big Nat Bass fan.

Digital Spy article from a couple of days ago summarizing some of the storylines to come in 2018:

14 huge Neighbours storylines to come in 2018, from Paige's exit to Izzy's return

What's next for the residents of Ramsay Street?

Neighbours is all over until January (boo!), but judging by the early spoilers that have already been released, 2018 is shaping up to be an unmissable year for Ramsay Street drama. We've gathered together all of the biggest and best storylines still to come right here – which one are you most looking forward to?

1. Gabe's kidnapper revealed.

2017's dramatic season finale left us wondering who snatched Paige's son from his pram. There isn't too long to wait to find out who - as 2018's premier episode on January 8 reveals the culprit. Who's your money on?

2. Toadie & Sonya's honeymoon from hell.

As teased in the Neighbours 2018 trailer, the Rebecchis' romantic trip on the Brennans' boat ends in tears when they drift out into the open sea & fear they will never make it back to shore alive! Now they know how Dee felt...

3. David proposes to Aaron.

David starts off 2018 with plans for a grand gesture - popping the question to Aaron. But with Aaron struggling with family problems & the re-appearance of his ex Rory, could David be heading for heartbreak with his badly-timed proposal?

4. Leo's divided loyalties.

Mishti causes a stir when she starts investigating the "IT glitch" at Lassiters that led to confusion over Gary's alibi. This could leave Paul open to charges of perverting the course of justice, so poor Leo is sure to feel torn between his girlfriend & his dad.

5. Tyler's future is revealed.

Don't expect any easy resolution to the 'Who killed Hamish?' case, as the first few weeks of 2018 see Tyler dealing with the aftermath of his confession. Is he going to jail? Or is there a chance that the real killer is still out there? We predict the latter!

6. Sheila & Clive's romance revisited.

Colette Mann & Geoff Paine were recently pictured filming new scenes as Sheila & Clive, who grew unexpectedly close this year before drifting apart. For Sheila, Clive may be "the one that got away" - but does he feel the same way?

7. Sonya's temporary exit

Neighbours favourite Eve Morey is currently on maternity leave, so we'll see Sonya heading out of Erinsborough for a while in early 2018. Will her exit*be a low-key visit to her son Callum, or tied in with more Dee-related dramas? Speaking of which...

8. The FULL truth about Dee is revealed.

Whether it was the fake one or the real deal, Dee popped up again in the season finale - watching Toadie & Sonya from afar, in a cab. A Neighbours insider has since told us that this is the prelude to a new chapter of the Dee saga in 2018 - hold on to your hats!

9. Izzy returns and causes trouble.

It's the Neighbours comeback we've always hoped for - homewrecker Izzy Hoyland will return to Erinsborough for a brand new drama with Karl & Susan. Her comeback story begins in a special hour-long episode in February.

10. Corrie's Ryan Thomas joins Erinsborough.

In one of the most surprising soap swaps, 'Jason Grimshaw from Corrie' pops up in Erinsborough next year - playing mysterious loner Rafael Humphreys for a guest stint. Rafael has dark secrets and is coming to Erinsborough to confront his past.

11. Sheree Murphy returns.

Sheree Murphy's unpredictable character Dakota Davies is back on the scene in 2018. Sheree was spotted filming on-location in London recenetly with Tim Kano, who plays Leo Tanaka. Three years on from her last stint, will Dakota wreak havoc all over again?

12. Sue Parker makes a comeback.

As spotted in behind-the-scenes show Neighbourshood, Kate Gorman has recently been on set filming new scenes as Paul's rival Sue Parker. "I'm back for long enough to cause a lot of trouble" Kate teased recently. We'd expect nothing less!

13. Paige leaves the street for good.

Olympia Valance filmed her final scenes for Neighbours this month, which means we'll see her character Paige Smith bow out in March 2018. There's no word yet on her exit storyline, but based on her past reputation, it's sure to be suitably dramatic.

14. Accident horror.

Behind-the-scenes show Neighbourshood revealed another juicy spoiler recently, quizzing Scarlet Vas (Mishti) about a shock accident that was being filmed on set that week. Scarlet was all smiles as she confirmed ä bit of a tragedy" coming up, but we bet her character will be far from happy on screen as she deals with the fallout.

When Gabe is returned he'll be ready for school.

And didn't recognise Dee in the cab - was wondering who it was.

For me Dee or Fee's return and Izzy's return are the two I'm most looking forward to. And finally who killed Hamish.

Hurry up January 8!

Digital Spy article:

Neighbours producer reveals Paul Robinson's past will come back to haunt him.

Jason Herbison promises a "goldmine" of storytelling still to come.

As the sole original Neighbours cast member still on the soap, you'd think there'd be very few stories left to tell about Paul Robinson.

But that's where you'd be wrong, as the soap's producer Jason Herbison has teased that there's actually a lot in store for the character when we head back to Erinsborough in 2018.

"Paul has a colourful past, and there are some interesting chapters that remain unexplored," Jason told Inside Soap.

"It's a goldmine for storytelling. Paul will be challenged by the arrival of a person who has a cross to bear, and Paul will be forced to revisit a period he thought was long forgotten."

Considering Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis) was off our screens for over 10 years between 1993 and 2004, it's anyone's guess what part of Paul's past the soap will revisit over the coming months.

But Jason did leave us with one extra little tidbit of information to keep us guessing.

"Also, one of our all-time favourite characters from Neighbours' 80s period is returning," he added. "That will be a thrill for our long-time fans – and probably quite bemusing and fun for our newer viewers!"

As much as we'd love to say this means we'll be seeing the return of Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan's popular characters Charlene and Scott (who happens to be Paul's brother, so there's at least a way in there), we think that's expecting a little bit too much.

But that still leaves many '80s favourites potentially in the running, so if you need us we'll just be over here weighing up the possibilities.

Neighbours returns on Monday, January 8 on Channel 5.

Very intriguing and I agree it won't be a huge name like Kylie or Jason. Jason though is a minor chance as don't think he's doing much. The article mentioned fun so thinking someone like Henry. Something to think about :hmm:

Daily Telegraph article today on Izzy's return (on Tuesday February 13th):

https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/entertainment/television/natalie-bassingthwaighte-returns-as-neighbours-greatest-villain-izzy-hoyland/news-story/cbde71b87cdc458c39277d499215a0c6

Natalie Bassingthwaighte returns as Neighbours’ greatest villain, Izzy Hoyland.

WHO is the greatest villain in the history of Neighbours?

Ask any fan and they’d probably say it’s Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis), who has contrived and connived, wheeled and dealt the residents of Ramsay Street for decades.

But there’s another baddie everyone loves to hate — arguably even more — and she’s back in town.

More than 10 years since she left Erinsborough, Natalie Bassingthwaighte returns to our screens as Izzy Hoyland next month, making her grand entrance in a movie-length episode on Tuesday, February 13. She says that this time, Izzy’s exploits will be “next level”.

“I like to say if you loved to hate her before, you’ll love to hate her even more,” Bassingthwaighte says with a laugh. “Izzy is always up to some kind of shenanigans, and her entrance this time is no exception.”

Bassingthwaighte exploded into Neighbours as femme fatale Isabelle “Izzy” Hoyland in 2003.

A manipulative man-eater, she set her sights on happily married doctor Karl Kennedy (Alan Fletcher), much to the horror of his wife Susan (Jackie Woodburne) and loyal fans.

Dubbed a “home wrecker”, Izzy was blamed for breaking up Karl and Susan’s marriage. She tricked Karl into thinking he was the father of her unborn child, hooked up with fellow bad-guy Paul, had another affair and drugged some people, all the while dabbling in blackmail and emotional manipulation. And that’s the short version.

”For a soap like this, you can’t go past a love triangle,” Bassingthwaighte says.

“Getting to play someone like that, you always have to look for the ‘why’. You’re not born a home wrecker. Situations and circumstances cause you to behave a certain way.

“Karl was very caring towards her. Izzy didn’t have a great relationship with her father, so I guess there is that element. She found him attractive because he was very nurturing and she hadn’t really had that in her life, someone who really understood her and accepted her flaws.”

So does Izzy have unfinished business with the doctor? Bassingthwaighte says, “Susan should be worried”.

“Everyone in the street should be slightly worried. More than slightly.

Bassingthwaighte left Neighbours in 2006 to pursue her musical interests — she performed in Rogue Traders along with Cameron McGlinchey, who she married in 2011 — and returned for a brief stint in 2007. Since then, she says she has resisted the urge to reprise the role for which she is best-known.

“I’ve been asked to come back for a number of years, and I always felt the timing wasn’t right,” she says. “I wanted to explore other characters and do other things.

“(Playing Izzy) is the one thing that I’ve done that I get asked about most on the street. Like, ‘I love Izzy, when is she coming back?’ I get asked about (Izzy) all the time.”

2017 was a busy year for Bassingthwaighte, who spent weeks in the jungle for Ten’s I’m a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here, coming in a respectable third place behind AFL player Dane Swan and singer Casey Donovan.

She did a stint playing Gillian in the second season of The Wrong Girl, a part that was originally intended to be 10 days filming, but was beefed up to “heaps more”. She continues to design her swanky range of childrens fashion, Chi Khi by Natalie Bassingthwaighte, which has been worn by celebrity offspring of singer Fergie.

But none of this impresses her two youngest fans, children Harper, 7, and Hendrix, 4.

“When I found out I was coming on I did show my daughter, Harper, a Neighbours episode,” Bassingthwaighte says.

“I think it’s a bit too old for her, but it was fun to say ‘Mummy’s going to do this show’.

“She laughs when we show her pictures of mum and dad in Rogue Traders, with dad’s crazy hair and mine. It’s an eye opener.

“But her friends at school are starting to say, ‘your mum is on TV’. So that’s why she’s starting to wonder, is this a big deal? But at home, it’s all so normal. We did lots of things before they were born. They’re like, ‘no!’
