Holby City will air an explosive two-part episode next month that will see the hospital plunged into darkness and changed forever.

Former Doctor Who star Paul McGann will make his debut as surgeon Professor John Gaskell in the episodes, but his arrival will coincide with one of the biggest threats the Holby team have ever faced.

As the hospital struggles under a crisis, Gaskell will arrive as the saviour of the hour – armed with a programme of surgical innovations and ready to take the hospital into an exciting but unknown future.

Gaskell will be introduced in the first of the two episodes airing in the same week, which will also heavily feature regulars Jac Naylor, Ric Griffin and Henrik Hanssen.

After turning up at the hospital, Gaskell wastes no time in setting the wheels of change in motion at Holby, but soon gets caught up in a shocking incident on the wards.

To add to the drama, Gaskell's plans for change couldn't come at a worse time for his new colleague Jac – who is facing mounting pressure in her professional and personal life.

However, Gaskell's arrival and concerns for Jac will both become overshadowed when Holby is plunged into darkness, with the greatest threat the hospital has ever experienced. How will Ric, Henrik, Jac and our other Holby heroes cope when their whole world is torn apart?

Executive Producer of Holby City and Casualty, Simon Harper, said: "I'm enormously proud of the Holby cast, crew and our lead writer Andy Bayliss for this stunningly dramatic and moving two-part event.

"You'll see our NHS heroes instinctively rush towards the hospital's greatest peril yet in a story that changes lives forever – and the fact that the episodes introduce Paul, one of our country's most internationally renowned screen talents, is the icing on the cake."

Holby City will air its special two-parter on Tuesday December 5 and Thursday, December 7.

Something is definitely up with Jac - she'd better not be leaving though...best one in it!

In the first episode of this two-part special, a new arrival in the form of Professor John Gaskell (Paul McGann) sets the wheels of change in motion at Holby City.

With all the focus on Gaskell, Sacha relays his concerns to Henrik that he should be focusing on Jac as she faces mounting pressure on her professional and personal life.

However, Gaskell's arrival and concerns for Jac both soon become overshadowed as Holby is plunged into darkness with the greatest threat the hospital has ever experienced.

Meanwhile, Raf is reminded of why he fell in love with medicine. Is his new-found passion here to stay?

Despite his suspension from Holby after the hearing, Ric manages to find his way into the chaotic hospital after desperate phone calls from Donna.

I'm now thinking that it's going to have something to do with that Jeremy bloke after what he said to Jac and Donna last night. And since the What's On TV magazine says a face from the past arrives with a chilling vendetta. He seems a bit obsessed.

Edit - Maybe it's actually Frederik?

Henrik suffers depression and anxiety, so what ever happens, probably will make that worse.

Frederik was my first thought....especially as Mr Hanssen is featured so prominently. But it could also be Jeremy now that you mention it with Rik being in it.
I`m happy about that as I love both Mr H and Rik. And what a treat - twice in one week. Christmas has come early.
