In a chat with Big Brother, Derek compared himself to Mary Poppins and said he feels a responsibility to look after the other Housemates.

After seeking sanctuary in the Diary Room, he also revealed that he's now feeling the strain of being the agony aunt in the House.

"I feel a bit like Marry Poppins, but a second-rate version because I can't do magic," he said. "And I seem to be getting through a lot of hankies today mopping up the tears of other Housemates."

"It's nice to be thought of as approachable," the softly spoken Tory admitted. "I picked up Vanessa when she was low, Makosi today, Craig, I did it for Lesley and it was a great relief to see Maxwell shed a tear. It just showed that beneath the hard nut is a soft centre."

The oldest Housemate added that he felt a "sense of duty" to listen to the problems of others and stated: "You can't abdicate responsibility to people who are considerably younger."

But it seems that Derek just wants some attention of his own. "Nobody asks Mary Poppins how she is," he grumbled. "They always think that it's alright if you look as though you can sing, dance and make magic - people think you've got the world but it's not always as it looks."

Then, feeling a bit dejected, he told Big Brother: "I feel that my work has been done here and wish I had an umbrella like Mary Poppins that would take me away."

And there's us thinking that Tories don't approve of a nanny state...
