Those who kept their finger on the pulse of now-defunct Heartbeat spin-off The Royal will know the show's Jill Weatherill was played by Amy Robbins, in perhaps the actress's best-known role to date.

And some six years since the hospital drama got taken off life support, Amy is now lining herself up for a new role as she steps into the world of Hollyoaks.

She will play the guest role of Lynette, mother of Scott Drinkwell and sister to Diane O'Connor.

Lynette shows up in the soap to support Scott in the wake of heartbreak in his life. Over some drinks, Scott has one too many and Lynette is led to worry about his behaviour – but we're told she's also in possession of some life-changing news…

Speaking about her new role, Amy said: "It's great to be a part of the Hollyoaks family.

"I've been made to feel so welcome as the newest member of the Drinkwell clan. They're so lovely and such fun."

Lynette will be heading into Hollyoaks on Tuesday, March 21 on E4 at 7pm (or Wednesday, March 22 on Channel 4 at 6.30pm).

Elsewhere on Hollyoaks, this week sees a storyline where Joel is trying to get Bart to leave but Bart has other ideas and is after some of Joel's jewellery – and if he doesn't get it, he's going to tell the truth about Katy to Warren.

Here's the full set of pictures showing Hollyoaks newcomer Lynette Drinkwell dropping a big bombshell when she joins the village next week.

Show bosses have announced that The Royal actress Amy Robbins has joined the Hollyoaks cast for a guest stint as Lynette, who's the mum of Scott Drinkwell and the sister of Diane Hutchinson.

Lynette's arrival comes just as suspicion is aroused that Diane had an affair with Scott's father years ago, breaking up his family.

Hollyoaks first hinted at this big twist over a year ago, when it was revealed that Diane was harbouring a secret necklace which Scott's dad once bought for his other woman.

Next week's episodes see Diane's niece Lily confide in her love interest Prince McQueen after uncovering her auntie's big secret.

When Diane then warns Prince to stay away from Lily because he's clearly a bad influence on her, he decides to fight back by using the incriminating jewellery box as leverage against her.

Things get even worse for Diane when Lynette turns up the next day. Now in the picture over Lily's suspicions, Diane fears it could all be connected.

Scott insists that his mum is only in the village because he needs his loved ones to rally round him now John Paul McQueen has left for good, but it seems that the family will soon have much bigger issues to worry about when Lynette suddenly cracks and drops a bombshell.
