Lee Ryan has landed a short-term role on the BBC One soap as a new character called 'Woody' Woodward who'll cause lots of trouble when he turns up in Albert Square this spring.

"I am so excited to be part of the show," Lee beamed. "Woody is the best role I could have wished to play. He's a brilliant character, and it's clear he's been leading a full and colourful life.

"I can't wait for people to see what he's like for themselves. Everyone at EastEnders has been so welcoming. I know some of the cast already so I'm sure we're going to have a lot of fun."

So who exactly will Woody be causing trouble for when he arrives in Walford? You'll have to tune in to find out because EastEnders bosses are keeping that info a closely-guarded secret.

However, executive producer Sean O'Connor has teased: "I'm delighted to welcome Lee Ryan to Walford as 'Woody' Woodward. Woody is a man who has worked hard and played hard in bars, clubs and pubs around the world and has finally decided to stop wandering and put down some roots.

"He's going to ruffle some feathers and obviously break some hearts, so there's a great deal to look forward to as soon as he bursts onto the square. Lee is a perfect casting for Albert Square and we knew straight away we wanted him for the role."

Blue star Lee Ryan will arrive on EastEnders next week - but his character 'Woody' Woodward will not receive a warm welcome from the Carter clan at the Queen Vic.
Scenes to be shown on Tuesday 18 April see the family learn that bar manager Woody has been sent by Linda to help out at the pub in her and Mick's absence.

But it will be a baptism by fire for the new arrival, who'll immediately have to deal with a fresh disaster upstairs at the Vic. And let's just say that the Carters won't exactly be making Woody feel at home.

Speaking recently about his signing to the soap: “I am so excited to be part of the show. Woody is the best role I could have wished to play.
"He’s a brilliant character, and it’s clear he’s been leading a full and colourful life. I can’t wait for people to see what he’s like for themselves.

EastEnders fans have watched Whitney Carter’s heart break as another partner has left her and disappeared, leaving behind only a note. Lee previously used this cowardly method to break things off with Whit although he eventually came back to provide them both with some closure before saying goodbye for good. Now Woody has done the same, heading off for a job in Spain without her and leaving her a letter to say sorry. So are these the last scenes of Blue star Lee Ryan? It certainly feels like a final exit but fans can rest easy as Metro.co.uk can confirm that Lee will return to filming down the line so the story is not over. Woody has so far been involved in two stints with the show and has proven popular among many viewers and his current break is to facilitate some work with Blue, including some performances and the release of a book, Metro.co.uk understands.
After these commitments have been sorted, Lee will return to reprise his role as Woody – who will have a lot of explaining to do when he and Whitney come face to face again.

EastEnders' Whitney Carter finds herself at the centre of a love triangle next week, as Blue star Lee Ryan reprises his role as Harry 'Woody' Woodward for a final stint.

Woody departed Walford in November last year, heading off to Spain after being offered a bar job over there.

Although Whitney (Shona McGarty) was all set to join him on the trip, she was ultimately left heartbroken when she arrived to meet him at the Tube station and realised that he'd left without her.

Next Tuesday, we'll see a remorseful Woody return to the Square, hoping to make amends for letting Whitney down.

Woody tells Whitney that he still loves her, but she's in no mood for forgiveness and storms off.

Later in the week, Whitney finally relents and agrees to talk to Woody, leaving him hopeful that he can explain himself and get back in her good books.

An interfering Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) isn't too pleased by this development and vows to warn Whitney that she shouldn't ruin things with her other love interest Halfway, who's currently away serving in the army.

Torn between two lovers, what will Whitney decide to do next?

While you'll have to tune in to see exactly what happens, EastEnders did recently confirm that Woody will be leaving the cast permanently later this year.

Halfway (Tony Clay), meanwhile, will be heading back to the Square when he returns from the army – with his older brother Stuart also becoming part of the cast.

EastEnders airs Lee Ryan's return on Tuesday, April 10 at 7.30pm on BBC One.
