Christmas in Emmerdale is rarely quiet and this year is definitely no exception, with possible romantic reunions, shock love twists and a terrible accident involving more than one character.

Without further ado, here's 10 exciting storylines you can expect to see over the festive season...

1. Zak and Lisa's Christmas reunion?

The Dingles' marriage was torn apart over Christmas in 2015, but what a difference a year makes. When the family all come together to celebrate on Christmas Day, disaster strikes as a secret audio recording is played which reveals that Zak doesn't want to move away with Joanie after all.

That's hardly breaking news to us, but it certainly is to Joanie. So when Joanie struggles badly after hearing Zak's harsh words, will he try to make things right with her? Or will he go ahead and tell his ex-wife Lisa that he still loves her instead? They're certainly growing closer...

One thing's for sure - Joanie's had enough of Zak blowing hot and cold with her. When she makes a drastic decision and leaves the village with little Kyle, it's left to Lisa of all people to try bringing her back. We bet that will be an interesting conversation.

2. Moira and Pete kiss again

We were always surprised when Emmerdale didn't do more with the Moira and Pete storyline after their bizarre kiss earlier this year. An inappropriate aunty-nephew relationship is classic soapy territory, right? But now the writers are making up for lost time by revisiting their romantic spark.

The pair will share another shock kiss in the run-up to Christmas and fireworks follow when Pete's current girlfriend Leyla finds out all about it. For now it just seems like a one-off hiccup in the Pete and Leyla relationship, but who knows what the writers have up their sleeves in the long-run?

3. Ashley's special episode

Emmerdale chiefs have previously promised a groundbreaking special episode which focuses entirely on Ashley's dementia storyline. Producers will use an experimental style to help viewers experience the world from his perspective.

We can now confirm that the episode in question airs on Tuesday, December 20, when Ashley is in hospital after an accident at home. We'll see a whole day told from Ashley's perspective after he unexpectedly walks out of the hospital and heads out onto the streets alone.

The episode has been produced with support from the Alzheimer's Society and will use special cinematography to show us the world from Ashley's eyes. And as always, we're expecting John Middleton - who plays Ashley - to deliver another standout performance.

4. Finn's bad romance

If you're excited over Finn Barton's new romance with crash victim Kasim, the bad news is that it's really not getting off to the strongest of starts. Surprisingly, the new couple do manage to get over the creepy revelation that Finn spent weeks paying visits to Kasim when he was in a coma.

Sadly, though, the next big crisis is just how clingy Finn still is afterwards. Kasim is pretty uncomfortable when Finn suggests he should spend Christmas with the Bartons, fearing that he's moving way too quickly. And when Finn goes overboard by buying tickets for him and Kasim to see Kylie Minogue in Australia, will it be the final straw?

5. Moira's hit and run

With her personal life in tatters, Moira starts to drink heavily this month and it all comes to a head when she drives off in the van while under the influence. As with all Emmerdale drink-driving, it doesn't take long for an unlucky villager to get in the way of the vehicle - and this time it's none other than Jacob Gallagher.

Pete is on hand to rescue Jacob by pushing him out the way of the van (that'll score him some brownie points with Leyla), but he ends up being knocked over himself. As concern rises for Pete, Jacob isn't out of the woods either when he collapses...

6. It's make or break for Nicola and Jimmy

The Kings' marriage remains on the rocks over the festive season after their recent rows, but there's still hope for the pair's future when the kids join forces to get them back together.

Angelica and Elliot's efforts to play matchmaker are pretty relentless and unconventional, especially when they do a disappearing act as part of their scheming. But will their plans pay off?

7. Ashley's last Christmas

Ashley may have his own special episode, but he also has a key role to play in Emmerdale's hour-long Christmas airing too. With John Middleton bowing out as Ashley in 2017 and the popular character rapidly deteriorating, it's clear that this will be his last Christmas in the village. But the big question is whether it'll be a happy one.

In the build-up to the festive season, Laurel faces pressure to consider putting Ashley into full-time care and, surprisingly, it could be a conversation with Aaron Dingle that helps her to make the decision.

Christmas Day itself starts off on an upsetting note when Ashley doesn't realise that it's Christmas and Gabby's birthday, setting the tone for another bad day. But when the Thomases get a happy surprise, are things on the up for a while?

8. Chrissie vs Rebecca, Round 10?

Home Farm also has its fair share of dramas this Christmas as Chrissie becomes suspicious of Ronnie, who's not comfortable with the expensive watch that Lawrence bought him as a festive gift. Is Ronnie making a mistake by quickly trying to offload it?

But the bigger story comes when the Whites decide to throw a New Year's Eve party and tensions rise between Chrissie and Rebecca yet again. Not another Bonfire Night-style debacle, we hope! When Chrissie manages to upset her sneaky sibling once again, Rebecca retaliates by getting revenge publicly. Hmm, why is Rebecca suddenly so excited about the film she plans to show at midnight?

9. Joanie comes out fighting

Kerry still has Dan on her mind during the Christmas fortnight, trying to make him jealous by flirting with another man during a singles' night which is being held at The Woolpack.

When Kerry finds herself in trouble with wrong'un Tommy, who drags her outside to his van, Joanie takes matters into her own hands to defend her friend. There are some dramatic consequences, but will Joanie go too far?

10. Do Moira and Cain reunite?

Don't worry, Coira fans – Moira's kiss with Pete doesn't completely close the door on her relationship with Cain. When the drink-driving scandal causes fireworks in the village, Cain even covers for Moira by telling the police that he was to blame.

On Christmas Day itself, there's a definite thawing between the former couple after Cain has spent days supporting Moira through her issues. Is Cain getting ahead of himself when he wonders if there's still hope for them, or could he be onto something?
