View Full Version : Derek Harkinson (Ian Lavender)
I think i missed a few episodes, so i was just wondering where has Derek gone? or is he just missing?
He's gone. Pauline kicked him out over the Chloe/Rebecca stuff because he didn't take her side... pretty childish for a woman of her years. Anyway he went to live at Dot's then Pauline found it in her heart to accept him back, but his son offered him a place of stay instead so he opted for that to the Fowler's. Served her right.
Pauline threw him out and he went to stay with his son Alex didn't he?
Sorry stapler, i didn't read your post before i posted.

Not "after" no. Sort of in the middle of it.
Oh right, i guess that happened when i gave up with EE.
I quite liked him as a charcter, you could imagine him being a real person. I guess he could come back, but i doubt that would happen anytime soon
Thanks for explaining it to me!

Where was he? Shouldn't he have been around the square, or at least at Pauline's funeral, they were really close ages ago. I thought he'd be around to comfort Martin and stuff. :searchme:
whos Derek?, i cant remember that character shows how much attention ive been paying over the years/

Derek was the man who moved in with Pauline. He was middle aged and gay. There was some humour scenes because Pauline tried to romance him.....only to find he was gay. He used to work on the stall sometimes as well.
#oh yeah i rememeber. I thought they fell out though, maybe not. He wasnt really a family member though. At least this time the had an explanation from Michelle.

Did they have an explanation from Sharon? I can't quite remember if the two fell out, I thought he just moved in with his family instead and never appeared again. Probably got on the tube and disappeared into the black hole, which sucks in characters who are no longer needed by EE.

didn't they part on really bad terms and never keep contact? I also think he went off to live by his family and they weren't near the square so it would explain why he never knew...though I'm not 100% sure since all that is a bit vague.
I think Pauline chucked him out, so he went to stay with his daughter, Mary. If everyone knew this, then they wouldn't have said anything.

That was some one my hubby mentioned the other nite, WHERE IS DEREK ??? I know he made up with his kids, and is living with them ( and not too far away too) I agree with you, he should have put in an appearance, they were friends for a real long time.
Thanks for the reminder
In a bit of a surprise, EastEnders is bringing back Dad's Army star Ian Lavender to play Derek Harkinson once again.

Lavender - who originally starred in the BBC soap between 2001 and 2005 - will briefly return to Albert Square for multiple episodes airing across the festive season.
While he was never a marquee character, Derek is probably best remembered for his loveable friendship with Pauline Fowler and as a mentor of sorts to her son Martin.
The close bond between the families was originally struck somewhat surprisingly when Derek rebuffed a romantic pass from Pauline because he's gay.
In his return to EastEnders later in November, Derek will be reunited with Martin for the holiday season.
"It was a lovely surprise to be back and I had a great time," Ian Lavender said today (November 4).
"It was brilliant to work with some old friends again, especially those who I only briefly got to work with before."
Lavender is, of course, best known for playing the bumbling Private Pike in classic BBC sitcom Dad's Army, and has memorably appeared in Keeping Up Appearances and Casualty over the years.

Just a thought, I wonder if Derek will move in with Martin and Stacy to be their lodger. Seeing as they are struggling after Belinda and Kyle moved out.
Edit: Nm, just read it as a temp return.

I don't think he fancies Patrick, he is just lonely and missing his partner and wants company

Billy should offer him the flat over the undertaker's business if he stays working full time in the shop with Honey
EastEnders will be exploring Derek Harkinson's backstory next week as a dark secret from his past comes back to haunt him.
The latest story will kick off when Patrick's ex-wife Yolande returns to Walford again, this time armed with some bad news for Derek.
Viewers know that Derek recently landed a job at Walford's Minute Mart and Yolande works in the supermarket's head office – having recently been involved in an important decision over Denise Fox's future at the store.
Fans will have to wait and see just what it is that Yolande tells Derek, but her visit leaves him feeling deeply unsettled and on edge.

Things get worse for Derek when he has an altercation with troublesome teen Keegan, before receiving some even more upsetting news that leaves him at rock bottom.
Dismayed, an angry Derek confronts Johnny Carter, who witnessed his earlier altercation with Keegan but failed to do anything. But as Johnny does his best to make things up to Derek, he soon realises that all is not as it seems.
After tracking him down, Johnny encourages Derek to reveal what's really going on, prompting the pair to have a heart-to-heart as Derek reveals everything.
However, Derek makes a sad decision in the wake of confessing all to Johnny – deciding that it's time to leave Walford behind for good.
Determined to help, Johnny enlists Patrick's support to stop Derek from leaving, but can they get through to him? And more to the point, what has Derek been hiding?

Ian Lavender has left EastEnders and won't be returning to the soap.
The actor has starred as Albert Square resident Derek Harkinson on-and-off since 2001 but has apparently parted ways with the soap in a year which saw Derek challenge a past conviction and clash with Keegan Baker.
According to the Daily Star, the actor is thought to have already been seen for the last time in Walford.
Digital Spy has reached out to the BBC for comment.

Derek made a surprise return a year ago for a few episodes around the Christmas period.
The character was probably best remembered for his loveable friendship with Pauline Fowler and as a mentor to her son Martin.
Derek and Pauline were old childhood friends, but we got to meet him when he rebuffed a romantic pass from her - probably because he's gay.
He hasn't been on screen for a while, but Derek got a rare mention and acknowledgement of his departure last week when Honey Mitchell said: "I've just been so busy since Derek left..."
Away from EastEnders, Lavender is probably best known for playing Private Pike in classic BBC sitcom Dad's Army.
Derek isn't the only EastEnders favourite to leave the soap this year, as exits for both Branning sisters are in sight.
