Bryan Kirkwood has revealed that the show will be revisiting James and Mac Nightingale's dark abuse storyline.

Fans were heartbroken last year when James revealed that he was beaten by his villainous father when he was a child.

While the storyline has been on the back-burner in recent months, Hollyoaks will be delving back into the plot sooner than you might have expected.

Kirkwood confirmed the news at Royal Television Society panel 'LGBTQ in Soap: Job Done?' yesterday (July 12), also revealing that Sally St Claire will be getting involved in the story.

He said: "Mac Nightingale had a history of beating up his infant son, who 'wasn't man enough'.

"That story is about to come full circle in the next couple of months – and that will involve Sally's character."

James's traumatic past was first explored last September, when Mac subjected him to a vicious beating at The Dog In The Pond.

When James's love interest John Paul McQueen realised what had happened, it transpired that this was far from the first time that Mac had been violent towards his son.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Times recently, Gregory Finnegan – who plays James – revealed: "James and Mac have no communication at the moment but I suspect down the line we'll explore their troubled past and the abuse again."

Gregory Finnegan has a surprising real-life connection to his new co-star.

The actor plays James Nightingale on the Channel 4 soap, who is set to be arrested in connection with the death of his former lover Harry Thompson.

On hand to interview James over the crime will be the soap's new character DS Cohen, who was introduced on screens earlier this week as the officer leading the investigation into Harry's murder.

DS Cohen is played by actress Ariana Fraval – who just so happens to be Gregory's real-life wife. And, speaking recently, Gregory opened up about how "lovely" it was to work with his spouse.

"Now my wife has joined the show any change in the filming schedules is a double whammy for childcare," he told Radio Times. "So it's all go, it makes things somewhat difficult but we are getting through it!

"It's lovely having her here. The first scenes she did were actually with me when James had to identify the body.

"She has got to know the cast and is making friends – now she finally can put faces to the names I've been talking about all these years! It's good fun working with her."

James Nightingale vows to hand himself in to the police next week, after learning the horrible truth about Harry Thompson's death.

James (Gregory Finnegan) has always blamed Mercedes McQueen for the demise of his beloved boyfriend, but after the shocking events of Hollyoaks Later, the real story is about to spread around the village.

In next week's episodes, James returns home from a skiing holiday and has lots to catch up on.

James's new love interest Liam Donovan (Jude Monk McGowan) asks him to be his plus-one at Jesse and Courtney's upcoming wedding. However, there's also something more serious to discuss, as Liam breaks the news that Breda (Moya Brady) was the one who killed Harry.

The bombshell knocks James for six, as he realises that he had no justification for shooting Mercedes and feels terrible for what he did.

James ends up turning to his mum Marnie (Lysette Anthony) for a shoulder to cry on about recent events.

Marnie worries when James explains that he hurt an innocent woman, so will now be visiting the police station to confess. Can Marnie stop James from condemning himself to a lengthy stretch in prison?

https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/hollyoaks/a62155951/hollyoaks-2024-stunt-week-gregory-finnegan-exit/

Hollyoaks actor Gregory Finnegan has confirmed his departure from the Channel 4 soap following the climax of the dramatic stunt week.

In the latest episode before the one-year time jump next week, multiple characters met their end, including Suzanne Ashworth and Dave Williams. At the end of the episode, the car that Gregory's character James Nightingale and husband Ste Hay were in exploded due to a bomb.

On screen, it was left up in the air, but in Gregory's new book out tomorrow (September 12), The World According to Grog, he revealed that he was told in March that he would be one of the cast members affected by the large cuts affecting Hollyoaks.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy (which will be released in full on Monday, September 16), the actor said: "Really sad is the overriding emotion. In the book, I talk about it being like a grief process, although I've gotten over it now. It was a shock to begin with. Then I was upset, angry and sad.

"But now I feel that I gave so much to the show ? and James did as well. Now I feel proud of the journey I went on and the work that I did. It's going to be sad to leave James in the past, but I didn't have any choice!"

We do know that Ste is one of the confirmed characters to be sticking around, which raises the question of how James' death will affect him as a character going forward.
