Amanda Redman (New Tricks) and Amrita Acharia (Game Of Thrones) have been set as the leads in The Good Karma Hospital, ITV’s six-part medical drama from Mr Selfridge scribe Dan Sefton and independent production company Tiger Aspect Productions.

The Good Karma Hospital is set in a coastal town in tropical South India and follows a team of British and Indian medics as they cope with work, life and love at the “Good Karma”. Run by a gloriously eccentric Englishwoman, Lydia Fonseca, this under-funded but creatively resourceful cottage hospital is the beating heart of the local community. It’s much more than just a medical outpost – it’s a home.

Amanda Redman takes on the role of Dr Lydia Fonseca; while Amrita Acharia, best known for her role as Irri on Game Of Thrones, will play Ruby Walker, a British-Asian junior doctor who is the most recent addition to the “Good Karma”. Casting took place in both the UK and Mumbai and the series will have a mix of British and Indian actors. The main cast also includes Neil Morrissey (Line Of Duty), Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey), James Floyd (Of Kings And Prophets), Darhsan Jariwalla (Gandhi, My Father) and Sagar Radia (Legends).

Amrita Acharia“It’s great to be cast in a Brit-Asian lead role in what’s an atypical coming-of-age story in many ways”, said Amrita Acharia. “The role of Ruby will be exciting to explore as she uproots the only home she knows, to be thrown into the deep end of a place with a different perspective on universal dilemmas of life, love, success and failure, and ultimately confronts herself with the past she was escaping from.”

The six part drama, which was commissioned late last year, is now in production in Sri Lanka for a 2017 premiere. In addition to creating the series, Dan Sefton, who has a medical background, also penned the scripts alongside Vinay Patel and Nancy Harris. Stephen Smallwood is the series producer. Gotham helmer Bill Eagles will direct the opening block of episodes. Will Gould, Frith Tiplady and Iona Vrolyk are the executive producers. Endemol Shine International is handling global sales.
