Holby City introduces a brand new character next week as Jasmine Burrows causes an immediate stir at the hospital.

Jasmine is arriving with a bang in two major storylines, as she's a new love interest for her mentor Ollie Valentine (James Anderson) – and she also happens to be the long-lost half-sister of fan favourite Jac Naylor (Rosie Marcel).

Lucinda Dryzek, who plays the new arrival, recently caught up with Digital Spy to spill the gossip on her explosive arrival.

How are you settling into Holby?

"Really well. I didn't know anyone on my first day, so it was a bit like the first day at school. But everyone was so un-intimidating and so lovely. They really took me under their wing. I'm quite a pessimist so I thought that somebody had to be a pain in the bum, but it turned out that nobody was!"

What was the audition process like?

"It was a bit of a whirlwind. I had an audition one week and a recall the following week with the producers. Then a few days later, I had to come to the studio and put a costume on to do an audition on set with Rosie and the directors. Which was really mean because if you don't get the part, you've basically had a day at work!"

Was it fun working with Rosie on set that day?

"Yeah, Rosie was really great in my audition. She made sure I knew what I was doing and had enough information on how Jac would react to things. She told me: 'This is just how Jac is. I'm not mean, but Jac's just like this!'

"That was on a Wednesday, but they rang at 5.30pm on the Friday night to say that I'd got the part. I was working at a hairdressers at the time, so I had to hand my notice in that day. It all happened quite quickly, but it was a lovely feeling."

What can the viewers expect from Jasmine?

"Jasmine is a little firework. She's lovely, she's a really good doctor and very instinctive with her work. In some senses she's the complete opposite to Jac. She's cheery, fun and smiley.

"If Jac's not going to show her love, Jasmine will just say: 'Okay, fine'. She's not going to let Jac see how desperate she is to form some sort of relationship with her. She's so cheery all the time – maybe to cover that up."

Is Jac the main reason that Jasmine has come to the hospital?

"Yes and no. Even if that's true, Jasmine would never say that out loud. Holby is one of the best hospitals, so there is that element to it too. But obviously Jasmine doesn't have a family and curiosity has got the better of her. If you've got the option to turn up at your long-lost sister's place of work, you probably would, wouldn't you?"

There's quite a big build-up to Jac finding out who Jasmine is. Is that moment worth the wait?

"Yeah it is, it's great. I think it's quite nice because it gives Jasmine a chance to just be Jasmine before she's 'Jac's half-sister'. You'll get a few episodes to get Jasmine's story with other characters going, before Jac becomes the main focus for her.

"When that does happen, it's quite nice to see Jac momentarily disarmed by something, because she's usually so impenetrable. Rosie played that moment so well."

What can we expect from Jasmine and Ollie's relationship?

"Jasmine is going to shake up the 'Zollie' situation. But I think that's really good for both of them, because at the moment they're cracking on pretending that everything's fine and it's obviously not. I don't think Jasmine has ever really had a secure life or someone in love with her, so she sees herself as a distraction for Ollie and he's a distraction for her as well.

"It's not a case of: 'Poor Jasmine! Ollie doesn't love her, he loves Zosia'. Jasmine knows what this relationship is and she's the one who confidently says what it is from the start."

Is there still hope for 'Zollie'?

"Well, maybe it will mean Zosia and Ollie realise what they mean for each other eventually. I don't think Jasmine is doing it maliciously – it's just that she fancies Ollie, she always gets what she wants and she's not embarrassed to say what she feels for him.

"That's Zosia and Ollie's problem – they won't say what they feel, whereas Jasmine gets what she wants because she says it as it is."

Do you think the Holby fans will like Jasmine?

"I think so, because there isn't a nastiness to her. She's like a ray of sunshine. The producer Simon Harper said in my audition: 'Have you seen Frozen? Jasmine is the young one who wants to build a snowman and Jac's the ice queen who won't play with her'.

"Jasmine is really likeable and she's like a little puppy bouncing around. If she gets kicked, she'll jump up and carry on. Because she's been through so much, she's quite hard to knock. She's not going to let minimal things hurt her, because so many big things have in the past."

Are you excited to have an ongoing role?

"It's the nicest feeling in the world. I've been acting for a really long time, since I was 8. I left school after my GCSEs and I've just been working since then, I didn't do A-Levels or anything. So there are patches where you're out of acting work. Before Holby, I had an 18-month patch where I didn't work. It's the worst!

"It's fantastic to get a job where you know you're going to be settled for a while. You can even take annual leave and go on holiday and nobody's going to suddenly tell you that you have to cancel it!"

You mentioned working in a hairdressers. Is it hard when you have to go back to a 'normal' job for a while?

"Well, I've had some really bad ones in the past, and as jobs go, the hairdressers was really lovely. They were really chilled out about letting me go to auditions, which is the biggest thing for me.

"I don't mind doing a normal job because I think it's really good for acting, especially somewhere like a hairdressers where you get to meet so many different types of people. You can take something from each person that you meet.

"It also means that if you do get an acting job afterwards, you appreciate it so much more. It had been a weird phase of not working, so I'm much more appreciative to have this job. But if I'd been sitting at home before that, I'd have got so bored. I'd much rather be working in a shop and meeting new people."

Will you watch your Holby debut?

"Well, I've been thinking about this. My friends are very excited about it. Those 18 months that I didn't work was the time I've known my boyfriend. So all of our friends haven't seen me in much so far. All of my other friends are really used to it, but all of his friends are saying: 'Can we come round?'

"But, to be honest, I never even watch playback on set because I get too paranoid. I probably will watch my first episode, but I don't know if I'll watch it with people. They may have to have their own party while I watch it in a darkened room, scene by scene. And then I'll probably never watch it again. I don't need to watch it, I was there when we filmed it so I know what happens!"

Holby City airs Jasmine's arrival on Tuesday, July 19 at 8pm on BBC One.
