They’re bringing two of Albert Square’s best-known characters to Dunmore East and to kick start EastEnders’ spin-off in style, BBC producers have enlisted a string of famous Irish talent.

Veterans Fionnula Flanagan, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Ian McElhinney have signed up to star opposite Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace as their hit characters Alfie and Kat touch down in search of the leopard print loving barmaid’s long lost son in the six-part drama Redwater.

The strong line-up signals a promising start for the production, which is set to begin filming next week and will be broadcast in 2017.

Flanagan is well-known to audiences thanks to her portrayal in in big budget projects including Lost and Star Trek.

Singer and actress Kennedy has featured in Downton Abbey, The Commitments and John Carney’s new film Sing Street, while Ian McElhinney is recognisable for his work in HBO’s TV phenomenon Game of Thrones, Ripper Street and The Fall.

Rounding out the Irish ensemble cast are Shameless star Angeline Ball, Brooklyn’s Peter Campion and The Tunnel’s Stanley Townsend.

Set in the fictional harbour village of Redwater where the Kelly and Dolan families have lived for generations, the programme will see Kat and Alfie Moon arrive in search of her long-lost son.

As the story unfolds, Kat’s quest for the truth uncovers dark secrets of the community.

When it was announced last year that EastEnders couple Kat and Alfie Moon would be starring in their own series, we were intrigued to say the least.Where would it be set? What could happen? And would the duo be returning to the main show afterwards? And while there might still be a while to wait before Redwater airs, we are finally getting some answers. Here is everything we know so far:

Redwater: What is it?

During April 2015, it was revealed that Kat and Alfie would be taking a break from the main show to star in their own spinoff. The series was due to air as six hour-long episodes, it would start filming later that year, and it would see the couple head over to Ireland to search for some answers to some very big questions.

However, fast forward a year and it's fair to say that things have changed slightly. Filming never happened last year and the series appears to have been delayed due to unspecified reasons. The change has still had its positives though, as fans saw Kat and Alfie briefly return to EastEnders over the festive season for some explosive drama which paved the way for their Irish journey. Redwater - as it's been named - will still air as six hour-long episodes, but is now very much being billed as a standalone drama series and not a spinoff.

Redwater plot: What's going to happen?

Production is in the early stages, but we do know that Kat and Alfie end up in the village of Redwater to search for her long-lost son - who she gave birth to in 1985, but has no recollection of. We also know that Alfie has a brain tumour. And it's recently been teased that Kat's quest for her estranged child will unsettle the Kelly and Dolan families and uncover secrets the village of Redwater would rather were left buried at sea.

"We have a really important and fantastic story to tell," director Jesper Nielsen said. "About how one woman's search for a lost child opens Pandora's box; revealing the terrible lies and secrets in the little village of Redwater. A story about how the strong bonds of love in a family can hold everything together, and yet at the same time - destroy everything." The production will apparently have echoes of a Shakespearean drama and will be told "in a rich cinematic style, loaded with humour and suspense". Intriguing!

Redwater cast: Who's in it?

We always knew that Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace would be reprising their popular roles as Kat and Alfie, but we have recently learned who will be starring alongside them. Redwater will launch with a full Irish cast - including stars of Orphan Black, Game of Thrones and Shameless - and we broke the news earlier in the week that Lost and The Others star Fionnula Flanagan will lead the show's main cast along with Shane and Jessie.

Hot on the heels of that exciting announcement was the news that Maria Doyle Kennedy (Orphan Black), Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones), Angeline Ball (Shameless), Peter Campion (Brooklyn) and Stanley Townsend (The Hollow Crown) have all been confirmed to join them. The drama will also feature Ebony O'Toole-Acheampong, Oisin Stack, Stephen Hogan, Susan Ateh and Ian Toner.

And it's a bit of a local affair too. Earlier this month, the Dunmore residents were given the opportunity to get involved in all the action when open auditions for extras were held.

Redwater locations: Where is it being filmed?

In Dunmore East, County Waterford. And show boss Dominic has been sharing lots of stunning shots of the Irish location on Twitter.

Redwater producer: Who's making it?

The six-part drama series has been created by EastEnders' executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins and will be produced by him and Vicky Wharton, while Borgen's Jesper Nielsen will be directing. Life on Mars creator Matthew Graham, Matthew Barry (Casualty), Julie Dixon (The Bill) and EastEnders writer Lauren Klee have all come on board to write. It's being made by BBC Grafton House Productions in association with Element Pictures.

Has filming started?

It sure has. Filming kicked off earlier this week, with Shane and Jessie spotted heading to an Irish church. Shane has also been keeping his followers up to date on Twitter. On Monday, he tweeted: "Day one #Redwater in the can."

Redwater air date: When is it on?
This is the all-important question! While it feels like this has been in the pipeline forever and several vague dates have been thrown around, the drama is now set to broadcast in 2017. Thankfully, it sounds like it will be worth the (very) long wait.

What else do we know?

Shane has been building the Redwater hype, describing it as a mash-up of Broadchurch and The Wicker Man: "I've read the first script - about a third of the way through I was going, 'No, Kat and Alfie, turn around, you should not be there'." And Shane has further added to the excitement by suggesting that the show may not end after one series. Yep. He has very high hopes for the show's long-term future, saying that he would be surprised if it wasn't a long runner.

Shane has also promised that the series will be respectful to Ireland and won't play the dopey card, after EastEnders was criticised for its portrayal of the country back in 1997. Oh, and Jessie has had quite the makeover for Kat's Irish adventure as well.

Will Kat and Alfie come back to EastEnders afterwards?

Again, it's too early to say. Initially, Kat and Alfie's exits from EastEnders were billed as just a break, but they have since appeared more coy about whether they'll actually be back. "We leave on screen next week and that's Kat and Alfie gone," Shane said recently. "We don't know. We could [come back], but it all depends what happens in Ireland." Helpful! We'll keep you posted, though.

It hasn’t even finished filming but it seems the EastEnders spin off series Redwater looks set to become a regular series.
The show follows Walford favourites Kat and Alfie Moon as they travel to Ireland to track down the son she never knew she had.
While hunting for her child, Kat’s going to unearth a series of secrets that will cause chaos in her life, but she’s not the only one, as the villagers of Redwater have a few of their own that they are desperate to keep underwraps.
Filming is underway and BBC bosses are said to be so pleased with how it’s gone they are considering making it a regular prime-time drama rather than a one-off.
If that happens it means soap fans are unlikely to see Kat and Alfie – played by Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie – back in Walford.
A source at the BBC told the Sun: “Everyone thought Redwater would be just a one-off, but plans are being drawn up for it to return once the six episodes are done.
“There are high hopes that it will become a brilliant new long-running series. Apart from Kat and Alfie there are numerous characters living in this lovely village who all have stories to tell.”

More details about upcoming EastEnders spinoff Redwater have emerged thanks to one of its writers.

Matthew Graham, who has previously written for the BBC soap, revealed that the show, which sees Kat and Alfie Moon move to the Irish village of Redwater to look for Kat's long-lost son, would be "emotionally real and raw".

"You can expect it to look amazing!" he told the BBC. "The lead director, Jesper [Danish helmer Jesper W. Nielsen] is a film director and has a tonal and visual ambition for this which is amazing.

"It's to make Redwater as big as anything you see on terrestrial television and I've tried to write a cinematic episode 1.

"The show has a heightened realism at times – I wouldn't go quite as far as to say 'magic realism' but through parts of the story we are allowed to take tonal liberties! It's very family-based. Very character-based.

"And it's very emotionally real and raw. The cast are amazing! It's one of the best read-throughs I've ever been to... And it's very dramatic!"

Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace film EastEnders spinoff Redwater
The show will see Kat and Alfie's arrival unsettle the local Kelly and Dolan families, with many surprises in store.

Graham revealed that he has "loved" writing for Kat and Alfie, recalling of his time on EastEnders: "They were two of the best characters to write for.

"They're so funny and tragic. You can put big, funny gags into their mouths and it works… Or you can break people's hearts with them. So that opportunity to write for them again was irresistible."

The show recently announced its full cast, including stars from Orphan Black and Game of Thrones alongside main stars Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace.

Writers Matthew Barry (Casualty), Julie Dixon (The Bill) and Lauren Klee (EastEnders) are also involved.

The series will have six hour-long episodes, with Richie describing it as "Broadchurch meets The Wicker Man", adding that he hopes it will become a long-running show.

Could EastEnders favourite Kat Moon have finally found her secret son?

Jessie Wallace has been spotted filming intense scenes for her upcoming spinoff Redwater with new co-star Oisin Stack, setting tongues wagging that he could be playing Kat's long-lost son.

Paparazzi photographers caught the pair heading out on a boat into the Irish Sea while shooting on-location in Ireland yesterday (May 5).

Wallace appeared slightly windswept but in good spirits after the dramatic scenes were over, but the real talking point was what it all means for her character Kat.

Wallace and Stack clearly had lots to talk about in a break from shooting, but could it be that their characters are related? Does Stack's character merely hold a clue to who Kat's son is? Or do the scenes revolve around another secret kept in the mysterious village of Redwater?

Stack is playing the role of Dermot in the show, but as with all of the characters, producers are keeping very tight-lipped about who he is and the part he'll play in the story.

Filming on Redwater began last month and the six-part series, which stars Kat and her husband Alfie (Shane Richie), will air on BBC One in 2017.

They're being joined by an all-Irish cast for the programme, including Lost and The Others star Fionnula Flanagan and Game of Thrones and The Fall actor Ian McElhinney.

Here's your official first look at EastEnders spinoff Redwater, which sees Kat and Alfie Moon caught up in high drama a long way from home.

This brand new image has been released now that filming has been completed on the six-part series, which will be broadcast on BBC One in 2017.

Viewers will see the Moons head off to the Irish harbour village of Redwater in search of Kat's long-lost son - a story which first began in EastEnders last year.

Redwater is a quiet and rural village by the sea, where the Kelly and Dolan families have lived for generations.

Don't expect it to be quiet for long, though. When Kat and Alfie arrive, their search for the truth uncovers secrets that the village of Redwater would rather were left buried at sea.

Not much else is known about the storyline at this stage, so we're definitely intrigued...

As previously announced, Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie will be joined by an impressive ensemble cast, including Lost actress Fionnula Flanagan, Orphan Black's Maria Doyle Kennedy and Game of Thrones actor Ian McElhinney.

Other castings include Angeline Ball, Peter Campion and Stanley Townsend.

Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace have revealed that EastEnders barely gets a mention in the show's upcoming spinoff drama Redwater.

The pair's popular characters Kat and Alfie Moon will take centre stage in a six-part drama series early next year, following their new life in an Irish harbour village that is full of secrets.

The Moons turn up in Redwater as part of Kat's search for her long-lost son, a story which began in EastEnders last year.

Shane and Jessie appeared on ITV's Lorraine this morning (December 6) and discussed the exciting new show, warning fans not to expect too many in-jokes or references to Albert Square.

Shane explained: "We were saying before, we've got nothing to compare it to because it's never been done before. None of the soaps have ever done it. They've all had that 'press the red button and there's a side story', but to actually take two characters out and put them amongst these other characters... It is an ensemble piece, it's not just about Kat and Alfie.

"And what was interesting about the script was that we make no reference [to EastEnders]. We never mention Albert Square, we never mention Walford.

"There's just one scene where somebody says: 'Oh Alfie, have you ever had any experience in a pub?' and he says, 'Maybe a little bit!'"

Kat is even frequently referred to by her full name of Kathleen throughout the drama – by everyone except for Alfie, of course.

Shane confirmed: "I'm the only one who calls her Kat. All the other characters call her Kathleen."

Asked whether this could pave the way for other soap characters to cross over into dramas, he replied: "It'd be lovely, wouldn't it? We were just honoured for the fact they asked us to go and do it.

"At first it was just going to be a one-off and then the momentum grew and we spent the best part of five months filming in Ireland. We've literally just finished doing some dubbing and ADR - and it's ready to hit your screens in the New Year."

Show bosses have revealed that Kat and Alfie's arrival in Redwater uncovers secrets that the villagers would rather were left buried at sea.

Shane Richie has revealed a new airdate for EastEnders' upcoming spinoff drama Redwater, which he will star in alongside his on-screen wife Jessie Wallace.

It was announced back in 2015 that the pair's popular characters Kat and Alfie Moon would be taking centre stage in a six-part drama series, following their new life in an Irish harbour village full of secrets.

However, the big question regarding when the show will actually air has been rife among fans for many months now, as the date seemingly appears to have been pushed further and further back.

Initially we were told that it would hit our screens early 2016, then it was Autumn 2016, then early 2017- and now Shane has suggested that we'll finally be seeing it between March and April. About time, too!

Shedding some light on the situation during an appearance on The One Show last night (January 9), Shane revealed that not only are we likely to see it in the spring, but they also have plans to release an exclusive trailer on that very show.

He said: "We filmed it for five months last year and it will hopefully be hitting the BBC screens between March and April.

"Hopefully me and Jessie will be coming here to talk about it and hopefully show you an exclusive trailer. We are so excited about it."

The Moons are set to turn up in Redwater as part of Kat's search for her long-lost son, a story which began in EastEnders last year.

New picture for EastEnders' Kat and Alfie spin-off Redwater released
Kat and Alfie Moon's trip to Ireland is almost here, and we've got a brand new teaser picture to prove it.
The EastEnders spin-off – Kat and Alfie: Redwater – sees the Moons turn up at the titular village as part of Kat's search for her long-lost son.
The image sees the pair on either side of three mysterious characters (four if you include the horse).
Among the new characters is Agnes, played by Fionnula Flanagan.
She has previously been described as someone with "secrets, deceit and manipulation".
Back in December, Shane Richie (who plays Alfie) teased the six-part drama by saying that EastEnders is doing something special in trying a project like this.
"We've got nothing to compare it to because it's never been done before," he said. "None of the soaps have ever done it. They've all had that 'press the red button and there's a side story', but to actually take two characters out and put them amongst these other characters...
"It is an ensemble piece, it's not just about Kat and Alfie.

"There's just one scene where somebody says: 'Oh Alfie, have you ever had any experience in a pub?' and he says, 'Maybe a little bit!'"
Kat and Alfie: Redwater will begin in May on BBC One.

Redwater is coming – and this brand new trailer for the EastEnders spin-off which follows a new journey taken by Kat and Alfie Moon gives us the first taste of the Irish based serial. Set over six hour-long episodes, the show is distinctly un-EastEnders, despite prominently featuring one of the show’s most popular couples.
Kat and Alfie arrive at the apparently sleepy settlement and it becomes clear that many of the residents are harbouring secrets that could have dark consequences. As Kat begins the search for her long lost son, what will she uncover? And why will she and Alfie regret ever setting foot in Redwater?

The trailer offers a look at some of the first scenes and features brief glances at the rest of the ensemble cast, proving that this is far more than just Kat and Alfie’s story. And with grim overtones hinting at tragedy, someone seemingly struggling in water and fear and mystery, this will have you hooked.

It reveals the start date on Irish channel RTE One as 14th May but the UK release remains uncomfirmed, with whispers suggesting it could land up to a week later.
Metro.co.uk were lucky enough to be invited to an exclusive screening of the first episode and trust us when we say that is is unmissable.

Hallelujah! The BBC has finally given Kat and Alfie's EastEnders spinoff Redwater a premiere date.

UK fans have been itching for solid information on when they'd be able to watch the standalone drama series, ever since RTE in Ireland announced it would air Redwater on May 14.

Here's the news you've been waiting for: Redwater will make its BBC One debut on Thursday, May 18 at 8pm. Some of you might already be panicking about a clash with Emmerdale, but take a breath!

Because of the (potentially Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn-less) ITV leaders' debate airing at 8pm on that night, Emmerdale will air for a full hour at 7pm.

So, no clash with Emmerdale at least for Redwater's premiere, but the Albert Square spinoff will still be facing some stiff competition from ITV's political forum.

Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace reprise their iconic EastEnders roles as the Moons in Redwater, as the couple's search for Kat's long-lost son brings them to a remote and secretive Irish village.

While Shane has confirmed that Redwater will only make a brief mention of Kat and Alfie's years in Albert Square, EastEnders does plan to reference the events of the spinoff in scenes next month.

Redwater has been created for the BBC by Dominic Treadwell-Collins, who famously was EastEnders' showrunner for three years. He quit the soap last spring.

"I've made sure that everything said on EastEnders has been tying in with Redwater," Treadwell-Collins recently said. "I still speak to EastEnders now and I believe that Sharon Batten has put a little reference to it in the main show."

Redwater will also star Orphan Black's Maria Doyle Kennedy, Game of Thrones veteran Ian McElhinney and iconic Irish actress Fionnula Flanagan.

EastEnders star Shane Richie has teased "heartbreaking" scenes ahead for his character Alfie Moon in spin-off drama Redwater.

Alfie was diagnosed with a brain tumour before he left Walford in 2015, but further tests last year revealed that it was benign and not malignant.

However, Alfie's journey certainly doesn't end there, with Shane revealing that his usually-cheerful alter ego will be in a very dark place when viewers catch up with him in Redwater next week.

Discussing whether Alfie's brain tumour will play a big part in Redwater, Shane told Closer: "Yes, very much so.

"Time has passed and we find Alfie in a dark place. We've filmed some scenes that are really heartbreaking, just harrowing."

The actor goes also revealed that he was initially upset when EastEnders producers told him about Alfie's condition, as he was convinced they were plotting to kill him off.

However, given that Redwater's bosses are hoping the drama will be commissioned for another series, something tells us that Shane has nothing to worry about there.

In the penultimate episode of Kat and Alfie: Redwater, we can't help wondering whether Alfie Moon is making his secret pitch for a sensational return to EastEnders.

Confiding in killer priest Dermott following some bad news about his brain tumour, Alfie is weighing up his future: "It's funny. I was thinking as I was driving over here – who's gonna put the bins out? Because that was my little job every Tuesday night. I put the bins out."

With priorities like this, Alfie would definitely fit right back in on Albert Square griping about those pesky bin collections with Carmel and Co. Whoever thought bin mania would spread to Redwater too? (Alf should count himself lucky he's not on a fortnightly collection like the poor Walford lot.)

Jokes aside, it's nice to see Alfie finally get a chance to shine in the EastEnders spin-off show after spending the previous four episodes largely on the sidelines.

Still tormented by freaky visions and suffering in silence, Alfie anxiously heads to the hospital, where a new scan reveals that his tumour is growing.

Alfie decides not to confide in Kat with the latest worrying update on his health, but he does share the burden by unloading onto Dermott, despite the past few weeks of sniping between them.

Sensing that Alfie needs clarity in his life, Dermott agrees to baptise him – and even resists the urge to horribly murder him in the water. First time for everything! Maybe he's finally learning to control that temper of his?

Alfie's health issues haven't received nearly enough focus in Redwater so far, but with the end now drawing closer for this six-part drama, it seems we have another last-minute hook on our hands to stop the EastEnders fans from switching over to Emmerdale at 8pm on a Thursday.

Will we get to learn Alfie's fate in the finale next week? Could Redwater even pull off the ultimate shock by killing off Alfie? In honesty, we doubt it, but we'll certainly be watching next week just in case.

It's not just Alfie's woes thrown in to keep the EastEnders fans interested this week, after Kat's daughter Zoe also gets a name-check when Dermott finally finds out that he has a twin. (Kat had neglected to mention that part of the convoluted story – oops.)

Dermott isn't too pleased over Kat keeping her cards so close to her chest and forces her to promise there are absolutely no more secrets, which she does. With the series finale looming, we can't help wondering whether Kat will live to regret that lie very soon.

Another thing we've learned is that Redwater loves a gathering, whether it's funerals, memorial barbecues or village festivals.

This week it's the christening of Bernie and Andrew's newborn son Lance, which is almost ruined when Andrew crashes his car while on an errand with his cousin-slash-love-interest Kieran and passes the time by sleeping with him.

Fast forward a few hours and it's all turning sour between them again, with Andrew harshly rejecting Kieran in the pub toilets and throwing a bottle at him. We don't think we've seen a romance this rocky since the early days of Emmerdale's Robron.

With just one episode of Redwater left, there are plenty of questions still in the mix – will Kat discover her son is a killer? Will Dermott strike again? Is Alfie going to die from his brain tumour? Could Bernie's painfully slow murder investigation finally get a result? And will the Kieran/Andrew secret be exposed?

As question marks are hanging over Redwater's future if tabloid reports are to be believed, we'd love to see as many questions answered as possible rather than being left with too many loose ends. Fingers crossed for a finale to remember...

Jessie Wallace has dashed the hopes of Kat and Alfie Moon fans by confirming that EastEnders spin off Redwater has been axed and won’t be returning for a second series. The Ireland based drama saw Kat find her murderous long lost son and at the end of the final episode, both her life and her husband’s were hanging in the balance.

I shall miss it, very good drama. So annoying when we only get 1 series of a new drama. I'm sure in this case the clash with Emmerdale didn't help.
