The new EastEnders set could include a mosque

​Albert Square is about to go under renovation - and it looks like the new EastEnders set will include a mosque.

The revamp will cost around £15 million, according to a report in The Sun, with BBC execs now in talks to finalise the contract.

A spokesperson for the soap said: "The new locations for the exterior set build are still to be decided.

"However, as announced previously, the new set will better reflect the East End of London on screen as well as increase the potential for storylines."

The mosque would be placed on a street leading to Albert Square, if the project gets the green light.

The building is described a "prominent place of worship" for the show's Muslim characters, which include Masood and Tamwar Ahmed.

Last November, Tamwar spoke about the meaning of Islam to Nancy which made for a poignant moment.

Just done a yougov survey (My £50 earnt for filling in surveys should have arrived in my bank this week which is good as I bought an expensive bee book the other day!) dropped this at the end...

Will be interesting to see what storylines they're planning.

There've been calls for years for EE to be more representative of today's real East End, so this is a good thing. I'd also like to see more of the Masoods at the mosque. It's a very big part of their lives but we rarely see it or the wider Muslim community with whom they interact.

It could of course just be an external set with the occasional interior shot continuing to be being filmed on location as is currently done.
