View Full Version : Holly Barton (Sophie Powles)
Things are about to get a little more crowded at the Barton/Dingle house as Holly Barton is returning to the village.
Incoming Emmerdale boss Iain MacLeod has revealed today that Sophie Powles is reprising her role as the troubled daughter of Moira Dingle.
Fans haven’t seen Holly in the village since 2012 when she decided to move away following the tragic death of her dad John.
But what will she make of Moira’s new husband Cain when she returns on screen in six weeks and will the singleton set her sights on any of the local lads?
Iain has teased that the former drug addict's return is going to spell trouble for the couple, who are already having to contend with the return of Cain’s ex Charity Dingle.
He confirmed: “Holly is coming back to the village and she’s going to be mixing it up for Cain and Moira!”
Meanwhile, the former Hollyoaks series producer admitted he knows he has big shoes to fill in taking over the top job from Kate Oates.
He said: “I’m thrilled to be part of the show, I’m under pressure but it’s a huge privilege and I want to continue Kate’s work.
It feels like I have been given a new box of toys to play with, it’s an amazing show and I feel very lucky to be a part of it.

Emmerdale bosses are bringing back Holly Barton to cause big trouble for Cain and Moira.
Holly will return to our screens in March - and fans don't have to worry about a sneaky soap recast, as Sophie Powles will be back in the role after nearly four years away.
Emmerdale's new producer Iain MacLeod announced the news at a press conference today, promising that Holly still has fresh trouble to bring to the Dales.
Holly's mum Moira will no doubt be pleased to see her, but her new stepdad Cain may not feel the same way when he's forced to get involved in her dramas - again!
acLeod revealed: "We've got Holly coming back. Still played by Sophie Powles, she's coming back in about six weeks.
"Cain's life at the present time is relatively stable, so we're just trying to topple his table over and throw him into confusion all over the shop.
"Holly arrives with trouble trailing behind her and then we see Cain do what he does best, which is step in and save the day as only he can.
"But there's a question mark over how long he can keep doing that in service of Moira and her family before his head starts to be turned by Charity.
"There's a big complicated family story there with all the relevant highs and lows and tragedies that you'd expect."

Holly was last seen on our screens in 2012, when she left the village seeking a fresh start shortly after the tragic death of her father John.
Fans will remember Holly best for her starring role in a gritty drugs storyline. Holly began taking illegal substances recreationally in 2010, later developing a serious addiction as she moved from cocaine to heroin.

From what I can remember like Adam at first she blamed hated Cain for his affair with Moria (Holly was a daddy's girl) that led to the separation of John/Moria due to her dads death & the bitterness intensified, Cain saved Holly after she took Heroin & overdosed on the day of John's funeral but she and the other Barton kids remained very anti Cain she was reluctant to thank him for saving her & the bad feeling remained leading to Adam try to kill Cain in that garage fire that Aaron took the blame for. Holly & Hannah left not long after this for a fresh start. Though neither came to the wedding of Moria/Cain they did send flowers to Moria apparently giving their blessing so who knows now?

Holly and Hannah also left long before the big revelation about Adam being James' son and not John's, but I do recall a reference to them being told (I think by Adam?). It will be interesting to see how this plays out for Holly in regards to the relationship she has with her mother, just as it had to play out with Adam.

Emmerdale returnee Holly Barton will hatch a shock plan to destroy her mum's marriage when she arrives back in the village.
Sophie Powles is reprising her role as troubled Holly, who shocks her family next week when she turns up completely out of the blue.
While Moira (Natalie J Robb) is thrilled to see her daughter back, her husband Cain is far more suspicious. It's soon clear that he was right to be worried when Holly later takes a secret phone call from her ex and promises to get some money that she owes.

Holly has an agenda
Holly's villainous ex-boyfriend Dean also follows her to the village the next day and piles even more pressure on her to cough up with the cash she owes him.
Needing a quick-fire way to make some money, Holly is intrigued when she realises that Cain's old flame Charity is still in love with him.
Holly wastes no time before trying to strike a deal with Charity, promising that she can help her to win Cain back - for a price. But will Charity be tempted by the surprise offer?

Holly tries to strike a deal with Charity
Jeff Hordley, who plays Cain, revealed: "Because Cain has just had the Charity situation and is still dealing with her being back, it's definitely not ideal to have Holly back too. Holly is not that keen on Cain because she thinks he's the reason that her mum and dad split up. So she's not his biggest fan.
"Cain doesn't really want Holly around either, because it's just another massive itch for him to have to scratch."
He continued: "I think Holly's offer to Charity could spell trouble for Cain's marriage, but it's unbeknownst to him. He doesn't realise that it's happening but he eventually twigs.
"In the world of soap, there's always the potential to be for couples to be broken up. I'd be personally gutted if Moira and Cain do split up, because I love working with Natalie J Robb.
"We'll just see what the future holds, but hopefully they're strong enough and the writers will keep them together. I think they have a certain appeal and charm to the viewers. I think Moira has tamed Cain somewhat and some viewers like that side to him."

Will Charity agree to Holly's deal?
Asked whether he likes that softer side to Cain, Hordley replied: "Yeah I do, but I don't think it needs to be there all the time because the character just becomes two-dimensional and boring. I think it's down to the writing team and the producers that the character is a lot more rounded and a lot more believable.
"Instead of him being the prince of darkness, he's got these human qualities, lighter sides and moments of love with Moira. There's still moments for the dark stuff, but it's probably a little more powerful because it's not all the time."

The last we saw of former heroin addict Holly Barton (Sophie Powles), she was skipping merrily - well, as merrily as Holly gets - off to London four years ago to become a trainee fashion designer.
She's had her hair done since then, but buried in that golden mane are plenty of problems, as her mother Moira soon discovers.
Holly and her new stepdad Cain have, of course, not had the easiest of relationships since he replaced her dead dad's place [John Barton] in her mum's affections. But he did save her from an overdose, so it's swings and roundabouts.
Adam implores his sister to give Cain the benefit of the doubt when she starts moaning about him - but Holly quickly hits on a plan to get him out of the way and makes a beeline for Charity.
And when Holly introduces Moira to her 'boyfriend' Dean (who is really a debt collector), it's clear there's trouble brewing...

Yes they were a couple for about 2 months or so, Aaron was fighting his sexuality at the time after he made a pass at Adam following a minor car crash he told Adam & everyone Adam told he was mistaken then started dating Holly to prove he wasn't gay but she soon dumped him realising something wasn't right with Aaron when she twigged he wasn't that into her & prefered hanging with Adam to her (then weeks later he met Jackson), but he and Holly remained on friendly terms.

We knew that Holly Barton wasn’t just back in Emmerdale for a family visit and, in a dramatic week for the newly returned youngster, we are about to see just how deep in trouble she really is.
With her former boyfriend Dean pressuring her for cash that she owes him, Holly allies herself to Charity Dingle on the basis that she will split Cain from Moira in exchange for her help.
But when everything goes wrong, it’s down to Cain to step in with a risky plan that involves bundling Holly into a van and setting off to confront Dean.
But as things spiral out of control, Holly could be at serious risk. Cain is the only one who can protect her and it wouldn’t be the first time that he saved her skin. Just imagine the trouble if his actions led to Holly developing a crush…
Hmmmm. With so much going on for Holly, we thought it best to get answers from the source closest to the complex character – actress Sophie Powles.
Here she talks us through the huge dramas ahead for her alter ego…
Why has Holly returned?
She’s been in London, done quite well, was offered a really good job there, working in fashion and textiles and all sorts of different things. She’s had a great time, she’s travelled, and then potentially things have started to go a bit wrong, we don’t really know what’s happened, but she’s ended up coming home. We all know Holly, she’s very good at manipulating a situation and getting what she wants.
Cain has got suspicions about her motives of why she’s back, so instantly there’s this thing with Holly and Cain, they clash heads. Holly doesn’t like that Cain is in her dad’s house, they weren’t together when she left, and she’s come back and they’re together. Instantly Holly is a bit annoyed with him, and it doesn’t take a lot to irritate her really. So she’s back, and then everything seems to be going okay, but then we see Holly getting a phone call from somebody, basically demanding money so she and Charity form this plan…
What is the plan?
Obviously Charity needs to find money for the pub, and Holly needs to find money to pay whoever she needs to pay. They form a plan to make the pub look like it’s been robbed, so Charity sets the fire alarm off and Holly sneaks down to the cellar where she’s got the code from Charity to go into the safe, take the money. The idea is she takes two grand she needs, and she gives the rest to Charity to do with what she wishes. But as she’s going down there, Moira is waiting there for her and catches her in the act…
So then we’re left with the classic situation of Holly in a real mess and then Cain says he’s got a plan. That ends up with Cain throwing Holly into the back of a van and driving her off [to meet Dean, the ex boyfriend she owes money to] It’s left with a full cowboys stand off between Cain and Dean.
What’s the plan with Cain?
Cain has basically got a van full of stolen goods, and instead of two grand he wants to do a swap with the van load. He tells Dean to leave Holly alone basically. It all gets very heated and messy. [What happens next leaves her] mortified, she’s trying to get out of this situation, but she’s now a woman having to be looked after by her mum again and this man she doesn’t even like, but now he’s suddenly looking after her. Holly is feeling really embarrassed by the whole situation, and almost ashamed.
She’s not a bad person or a bitch or mean or nasty, she’s just a girl who’s got this drug addiction that keeps clawing her back in. She keeps finding herself in these awful situations that she doesn’t know how to get herself out of.
In the end Holly has [Cain] over a barrel and manipulates him, she’s very good at that. She makes him realise that she’s going to tell Moira what happened, and it’s a case of who will she trust, me or you? Do you think your marriage is strong enough? She knows how much her mum loves her.
Have you had a lot of response to Holly’s drug addiction?
I was really fortunate when I got given the storyline, Gavin Blyth the producer at the time was extremely supportive, and he wanted to do it properly. So I had a drugs counsellor, I went to a drugs group charity called Disc, working with a heroin addict. Her and I had a lot of communication, and she was always really pleased with how I portrayed it. All the team at Disc were always so supportive and pleased at how genuine and real it was, how it was tastefully done and accurate to how it would be.
The preconceived ideas we have of drug addicts is so wrong, they’re just these poor people, and until we’ve been in a situation that is that awful or had something in our lives that hurt us that badly that we need to do something to escape from it, or experience extreme poverty or neglect or abuse. We just don’t know, and it made me take a step back and be less judgemental, actually just seeing they’re people who made a bad choice, and until I’ve been in a situation where that is the only choice I’ve got then I can’t judge.
I’ll never be able to understand fully without doing that stuff myself, and I’m not that much of a method actor! It’s a really interesting thing, and I have met people in the street who were addicts and they’ve come to me and said, ‘You know I was an addict, and I was the same as Holly, just a normal girl from a normal family, I did it as a release and it just escalated.’ Another woman, me and Natalie (J Robb) were out together and she said to us that she would never have known her daughter was drug using until she saw Holly’s storyline and the slow progression of it. It made her suspicious of the way her daughter was acting, and she looked in her bedroom and found drugs in her drawer. Little things, I think it has affected people and raised awareness, which is only a good thing.
Would you like to see Holly go as far as to try it on with Cain?
It’s a bit weird because Jeff [Hordley] is one of my best mates in real life, I know it doesn’t really matter, but it’s a bit awkward. I don’t think I would, you know. I think working with Jeff now, we’ve established this really nice relationship between Holly and Cain, and he’s like this step-in father figure for her, their whole energy between them is fun and a really nice dynamic. Realistically it wouldn’t really work because he is in love with her mother, and they are genuinely in love. It would be fun obviously for Holly to have a bit of an affair, but I think ultimately she would just be blurring the lines between a father figure that she hasn’t had for so long and someone actually looking after her, and a crush. She’s just blurring the lines between these new feelings she’s got, and feelings she hasn’t felt for a long time.
There’s a scene where Cain shows Holly how to punch and she really hits him! What was that like to film?
It was so exciting. I rung my dad that night and I said, ‘Guess what I did at work today? I punched Cain Dingle in the face!’. I didn’t actually punch him, there was fake blood which made it more exciting. I took a picture of it and sent it to my mum!
What made you want to return?
It wasn’t ultimately my choice, I was travelling and had been travelling for seven months, and I said to my boyfriend that I couldn’t wait to get back to England to audition, and imagine if I got something like Emmerdale again, the awesome environment, the team, the storylines and passion that’s here. And then the next day I got an email from my agent saying Emmerdale would like you back. I was like “oh my God, thank you!” It’s so weird. I got back at the end of January and I started at the beginning of February, so it was all perfect timing. Actually it felt really, really good.
Are you ready to be thrust back into the spotlight?
Acting has never been about that for me, I understand that that comes with it when you put yourself out there and putting yourself under the spotlight. Acting has always been my passion, and performance has always been something I’ve done and loved since I was a little girl, I’ve always chased that. The other stuff is just something that comes with it, it’s not something I look forward to, but it’s something I understand is necessary and part of the whole process. Just to be performing and acting again is the best, and that’s what I focus on and everything else that happens I’ll deal with that as best as I can.
How long would you like to be in the show for this time?
I don’t know, I don’t think you could ever say that. I don’t want to jinx anything, but at the moment I’m loving being here, and I’m having the best time. I feel very grateful and very lucky, and very happy.

Emmerdale actress Natalie J Robb says her alter ego is left “disgusted” when she finds out what her daughter Holly has been getting up to.
Moira Dingle’s delight at having her daughter home soon gives way to frustration when she discovers not only that Holly fell off the wagon and started taking drugs again, but she’s in serious debt with her former dealer, Dean.
Holly teams up with Charity Dingle in a bid to get her hands on the cash, and then plots to double cross her by stealing from the Woolpack. However, Charity’s no fool and soon realises what she’s up to, inviting Moira to catch her thieving daughter in the act, so Moira lays in wait in the cellar.
Natalie explained: “Charity sets her up so Moira’s already in the cellar waiting for her to see if she steals. She catches her in the act. She’s absolutely disgusted by it, when it comes to stealing that’s the slippery slope that the drug addiction led her to, and it’s still part of her. It’s awful for any mother to witness. She wants to give her the benefit of the doubt but she’s never going to trust her because she’s crossed so many lines, she would be an absolute mug if she didn’t question her.”
She added: “Moira is really happy to have Holly back in the village, she’s missed her terribly and worried like every mother does. It’s quite soon that Moira realises Holly’s been taking drugs again, she can only pull the wool over her eyes for so long. It’s heartbreaking for Moira because all she wants is the best for her, but she’s not surprised, there was always a chance she would go back.”
Holly apologises to her mum and insists she wants Dean out of her life so Moira forms a plan but soon realises she’s out of her depth and calls in the big guns!
Natalie explained: “She tries to do it the right way but he wants more and after that it’s dealt with properly by Cain. He’s very supportive when it comes to Holly, but he knows she’s bad news and wants her to leave the village. He knows she’ll just bring more trouble for Moira, who will be worried sick.”
Cain forms a plan and he tricks Holly into getting in the back of the van, where he locks her in and tells her to ring Dean as they’re setting him up. On a secluded road they’re soon joined by Dean and Cain offers him a deal, if he stays away from Holly.
Things spiral out of control and Cain ends up attacking one of Dean’s henchman and Holly is devastated as he drives off. Later, Cain pulls up near a bus stop and tells Holly to go and to never come back, but does Holly have Cain over a barrel, when she threatens to tell Moira about what happened between them and will Cain have no choice but to agree to take Holly back home?

Emmerdale's Holly Barton will finally face a major turning point this summer as she vows to beat her drug addiction by going cold turkey.
Holly (Sophie Powles) will beg to be locked away by her family after coming clean about her tragic relapse, including how her sister-in-law Victoria was beaten up by a drug dealer thanks to her.
The emotional scenes are still a few weeks away, so there's plenty of drama to come before the big moment that Holly hits rock bottom and admits that she needs help.
Remembering how her parents previously locked her up in her bedroom to keep her away from drugs, Holly desperately begs Moira (Natalie J Robb) to try the same tactic again.
Emmerdale's series producer Iain MacLeod revealed: "Holly being locked up is voluntary this time. It's Holly's request. The story we wanted to tell was firstly about a high functioning drug addict. It's not the classic drug spiral story.
"It's about someone who is trying to take a hold of her own destiny and trying to get a stranglehold on this addiction that is tormenting her. It's about mother and daughter tackling it together, so obviously what we see is her self-imposed exile as she tries to go cold turkey and she makes it.
"What we wanted to do is to show that somebody can get a hold of the addiction with people around them. The question becomes in the long term, will that resurface? Can she stay on the straight and narrow?"
Holly's addiction will also be a major factor in upcoming marital problems for Moira and Cain (Jeff Hordley). It's been revealed that Cain will be pushed back towards his old flame Charity over the summer, as his current relationship starts to hit the rocks.
MacLeod added: "It becomes a massive bone of contention for Moira and Cain. At its core, it's more than addiction story. It's about the family as a whole.
"Cain has a very well established aversion to addicts, so Cain and Moira have very opposing views on how best to deal with this. Most fundamentally, it's a story about the family and the debate which ensues on how best to deal with what this person is going through and how it impacts on all the relationships."

Emma mysteriously brought up Holly's name during her fateful showdown with her husband James on a road bridge, leaving many to question whether there was a sinister revelation behind her words.
It all kicked off when James encouraged Emma to put an end to her crazy ways (fat chance) and move on with her life. But Emma didn't seem too pleased by this, thinking that James was comparing her unfavourably to her love rival Moira.
Voice-of-reason James explained: "You can move on and you will. Because that's what people do. You lose someone because of a mistake you made or something horrible happens..."
Emma replied: "Oh, you mean like Holly and John? You're saying that I should be like her. Perfect, strong Moira. She did it, so why shouldn't I, eh? Just move on. Even now you can't stop thinking about her."
While it seemed to us that Emma was just looking for any old excuse to harp on about Moira, some Emmerdale fans wondered whether her mention of Holly was actually a veiled confession.

And those are just a few of many tweets asking the same question!
Let's not forget, though, that Emma and James were actually both away from the village when Holly died and didn't return to catch up on the Barton family traumas until days afterwards.
Unless Emma somehow popped back to murder poor Holly or had been her secret drugs supplier for a long time before that, it seems unlikely that she had anything to do with it.
Emma was also fairly stable at that point, as she hadn't found out about James cheating on her with Moira and had no evil Misery-style plans on her mind yet.
Plus, wouldn't a murder twist ruin what Emmerdale achieved with Holly's drugs death - sensitively showing the cruel realities of addiction without sensationalism?
We're not convinced by this one - but you can never completely rule something out in Soapland, can you?
