Former Coronation Street actor Jonathan Wrather has joined the cast of Emmerdale as Pierce Harris.

Pierce comes on the scene as his wife Tess (Nicola Stephenson) is having an affair with vet Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt).

However, Paddy never expected to come face-to-face with Tess's husband.

Tensions are sure to rise as Pierce makes his first appearance mid-February.

Wrather has appeared in a host of TV shows, including Coronation Street and Silent Witness.

"I am thrilled to be joining Emmerdale," he said.

"It's a great opportunity to be offered the chance to create a new character in one of TV's most popular shows and I'm very excited to be working with such an outstanding cast and team.

Emmerdale newcomer Pierce Harris will become a force to be reckoned with as he seeks answers over the death of his wife Tess.

Jonathan Wrather made his first appearance in the role in Thursday night's dramatic double bill (February 11), which saw Tess killed by Kirin Kotecha in a drunken hit and run.

As Pierce battles through his grief in the coming days and weeks, he'll naturally have lots of questions to ask. Could he uncover the affair that Tess was having with Paddy Kirk before her death?

Speaking in-depth about his role for the first time, Wrather revealed: "Pierce is shellshocked and it's a maelstrom of grief, but then it shifts. It's very intricate and as the story pans out, it shifts from one thing to another. It's very well-written in the sense that we get to play out these little intricacies.

"It could go any number of ways at the moment and we are not entirely sure. When we first meet him properly and get to see a little bit of what he is like, he is quite obsessive about trying to find out what the hell went on. But you can empathise with that because of the circumstances under which he arrives.

"We've already heard that he is a little amiss and not as attentive as you might be. He is also very career-orientated. But Tess's death is a catalyst for him to think about what he's done because the most important thing in his life is now gone.

"Where he goes from there and how that manifests itself, we are not sure yet."

It won't just be Paddy who has reason to be nervous about Pierce, as Rhona also discovers the truth about the affair next week.

Rhona decides to just carry on as normal to avoid jeopardising her adoption plans with Paddy, but can she stop herself from slipping up around Pierce?

Wrather's Emmerdale casting was announced last month, but fans had no idea that he wouldn't actually be sharing any scenes with his on-screen wife Nicola Stephenson, who played Tess.

He laughed: "We've never met. It seems strange that we don't get any screen time together whatsoever! Pierce was spoken of and we saw his house, but the only time you saw me there was in a photograph in the background."

In a shocking Emmerdale double which saw the death of Tess Harris, viewers got the first glimpse of her husband Pierce, who turned up to the hospital and was grief stricken as he lost his wife.

We have heard from Tess that her marriage has been shaky – hence her obsessive affair with Paddy Kirk. But actor Jonathan Wrather will soon become a staple of Emmerdale life – which can only be bad news for Paddy and Rhona.

Speaking about Pierce, Emmerdale’s executive producer John Whiston told Metro.co.uk: ‘We’ve always said an event should always be the start of something new – it should be a collision that sends the story in a new direction. We see something new coming out of two storylines and it’s very exciting.

‘Jonathan is a fantastic addition – and we all know how evil he can be! He may not know how evil he is going to become yet…’

We also spoke to Jonathan himself, who spoke about his new role. Here is what he was able to reveal:

Did you know any of the cast before the show?

Yes, Chris Bisson [Jai]. We worked together a long time ago. I also knew Bill Ward [James] because we worked together in the same show as well and our paths haven’t crossed since then. We haven’t had any scenes together yet and I don’t know if we ever will.

Was it weird coming onto a show playing a character whose on screen partner has been killed off and you’ve never met?

Yeah we’ve never met. We’ve had this conversation and it seems strange that we don’t get any screen time together whatsoever. Pierce is spoken of and we actually go to our house but the only time you see me there is in a photograph in the background.

What kind of character will Pierce turn out to be?

He is shell-shocked and it is a maelstrom of grief but then it shifts. It is very intricate and as the story pans out, it shifts from one thing to another. It is very well-written in the sense that we get to play out these little intricacies. That is one of the great things about the show. It is so well written and you get all these scenes – some long and some little vignettes which are a real insight into how someone reacts to something right there in the moment.

It could go any number of ways at the moment and we are not entirely sure. When we first meet him properly and get to see a little bit of what he is like, he is quite obsessive about trying to find out what the hell went on but you can empathise with that because of the circumstances under which he arrives. We’ve already heard that he is a little amiss and not as attentive as you might be. He is also very career orientated but Tess’s death is a catalyst for him to think about what he’s done because the most important thing in his life is now gone. Where he goes from there and how that manifests itself – we are not sure yet.

Emmerdale's Pierce Harris is a man on a mission next week as he desperately seeks answers over the death of his wife Tess.

With so much drama surrounding the affair that Paddy Kirk had with Tess before her demise, it's been easy to forget about the hit and run crime which was at the centre of the tragedy.

Keen for his wife's killer to get justice, Pierce takes matters into his own hands by distributing flyers at the scene of the accident next week.

As he continues to play detective, Pierce soon makes a discovery that he didn't expect and it's not long before he's vowing to stick around in the Emmerdale village to secure further answers.

Could this be bad news for local lawyer Rakesh Kotecha, who's still trying to protect his son Kirin? Whatever happens, we're sure it can't end well...

Jonathan Wrather, who plays Pierce, revealed: "He's obsessive about trying to find out what happened. He's not dealing with it at all. Pierce is spiralling to a fairly dark place within himself, because he's so distressed. The fact that information is not forthcoming about what happened to Tess is making it worse.

"Pierce starts to suspect foul play after a short period, because he's being drip-fed all of these snippets of information about Kirin, about Kirin and Vanessa's relationship, and about Rhona and Paddy's relationship too.

"He seems to be the last person to get all of this information, so it's not surprising that he feels fairly paranoid and peeved. He's the one who knows the least but deserves to know the most.

"When Pierce does start to find out about Kirin, he obviously wants to know even more. I'm not sure what he's going to do when he finds Kirin, but he actively seeks him out through Rhona, Vanessa and eventually Rakesh."

We all know that Adam Fielding, who played Kirin, has already left Emmerdale - but could there still be a way for Pierce to get justice?

TW:
Spoilers say that Pierce hands out flyers to car drivers on 19 April. When he does find out about Kirin by 21 April, DS says that Pierce from then "actively seeks him [Kirin] out through Rhona, Vanessa and eventually Rakesh". I suppose that Pierce could just phone Rhona when she is in Germany on or after 21 April, otherwise (and more likely, I think) Pierce must meet Rhona around Emmerdale village and so Rhona and Paddy don't leave for Germany on 18 April, if at all?

is he vanessa's new romance

It isn't clear for how long Pierce Harris is around Emmerdale but Digital Spy news (see earlier posts in this thread) suggest to me that he might have storylines for maybe a minimum 6 month-term (with Paddy/Rhona/Kirin/Rakesh, etc). If Jonathan Wrather (who first appeared as Pierce in Emmerdale on 11 Feb 2016) really does have a 6-month minimum contract, as I suspect, then he could be on-screen until at least August 2016. I was really hoping that Pete would get together in a while with Vanessa though. Tracy is shortly going to move out of the B&B and move into Vanessa's cottage.

Michelle Hardwick (Vanessa) said in interview recently that "Tracy will be moving into Carly and Vanessa's spare room at Tug Ghyll - which means there will be a lot more booze and lot more fun around their house! Vanessa needs that after everything she's been through. Plus, it means there will be an extra babysitter on hand."

Emmerdale's Pierce Harris turns vengeful next week as he tries to cut Paddy Kirk out of Rhona Goskirk's life once and for all.

Viewers saw Paddy (Dominic Brunt) depart the village in Monday night's episode after Rhona made it clear that she could never forgive him for cheating on her with Pierce's late wife Tess.

As Paddy said his goodbyes, he promised his stepson Leo that he'd stay in constant touch via Skype and telephone calls.

Unfortunately, it's this very promise that sparks tensions next week as Pierce (Jonathan Wrather) spies an opportunity to cause more trouble.

Enjoying spending time with Rhona (Zoe Henry) now that her husband is out of the picture, Pierce insists on cooking her breakfast - but she gets annoyed when they're interrupted by a phone call from Paddy.

Pierce then crosses a line by getting overly involved - suggesting that Paddy should give Rhona a clean break and only speak to Leo when the youngster is at Marlon's house from now on.

The next day, Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) is far from pleased when he finds Pierce looking after Leo in the cafe.

Still in touch with his best friend, Marlon also warns Rhona that Pierce has warned Paddy not to call the house anymore. Knowing he's gone too far, will Pierce be able to explain himself? Or is Rhona already so won over by his charms that she doesn't care?

Emmerdale's Pierce Harris shows his true colours next week as he comes up with a very sneaky plan to frame Paddy Kirk.

Pierce (Jonathan Wrather) is outraged once he finds out about Paddy trashing Smithy Cottage and decides that it's time to teach him a lesson.

With emotions running high over Paddy's moment of madness, Pierce even threatens his love rival to warn him off.

Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele) witnesses the nasty incident and tells Rhona about Pierce crossing the line, but Rhona's loyalties lie with him and she continues to blame Paddy for everything.

Not wanting to run the risk of Paddy somehow getting back in Rhona's good books, Pierce later comes up with a surprising plan and sneaks a T-shirt into Paddy's bag at the vet's surgery.

Emmerdale aren't revealing who the shirt belongs to, but could Pierce perhaps try to make Paddy look creepy by planting one of Rhona's in there?

When the inevitable happens and the shirt gets found, Paddy is upset to be doubted by everyone and it soon looks like he's starting to admit defeat.

Emmerdale continues to explore Pierce Harris's darker side in the New Year after his plans to propose backfire on him.

Pierce (Jonathan Wrather) decides to pop the question to his partner Rhona Goskirk in early January, failing to realise that she might not be ready for another big commitment so soon after splitting from Paddy Kirk.

The couple have been together for a few months now, but with Pierce's angry behaviour sending them both to counselling recently, it's fair to say that it's been a rocky road up until this point.

Sure enough, Rhona's reaction to Pierce's proposal is the last thing that he wanted as she just laughs and rejects him – insisting that it's far too soon in their relationship.

To make matters even worse, Paddy also rushes to show there's no hard feelings and offers his congratulations to the couple, forcing them to explain that Rhona actually said no.

Back home later, a livid Pierce starts to pressure Rhona for sex and she becomes uncomfortable when he doesn't seem prepared to take no for an answer.

Pierce's worrying behaviour leaves Rhona questioning their relationship, but is she ready to cut ties with him or will she give him another chance?

Emmerdale airs these scenes on Wednesday, January 4 at 7pm on ITV.

Emmerdale aired a dark storyline twist on Wednesday evening (January 4) as Pierce Harris raped his partner Rhona Goskirk.

The shock scenes aired in the closing moments of the show's latest episode, exploring the issue of rape within a relationship.

Pierce (Jonathan Wrather) has been making big plans for the future this week, hoping to prove his commitment to Rhona by getting engaged.

When Pierce went ahead and popped the question, he was left shellshocked as Rhona (Zoe Henry) insisted it was far too soon - not least because she's technically still married to Paddy Kirk.

True to form, needy Pierce reacted badly to the rejection and was desperate for reassurance from Rhona.

Just when it looked like they were back on track and Rhona suggested going out for dinner together, Pierce's behaviour took a surprising turn as he started pestering her for sex.

Although Rhona repeatedly tried to push Pierce away and insisted she wasn't in the mood, he wouldn't take no for an answer and forced himself on her.

Afterwards, Pierce carried on as normal as he suggested booking their meal for tomorrow instead - but Rhona was visibly shaken over what had just happened.

Emmerdale viewers will see the storyline continue tomorrow, as Rhona remains unsettled and worried around Pierce after his actions the previous night.

We know from future episode spoilers that Rhona and Pierce will be staying together for the foreseeable future, but Emmerdale's producer Iain MacLeod had previously hinted at darker times ahead for them.

He said recently: "I think a lot of you out there have started to suspect that Pierce might not be the nice guy everybody seems to think he is, or the nice guy that Rhona seems to think he is.

"In his mind, he's a normal guy, but actually we start to see a darker side of his personality come out much more obviously that puts Rhona in quite a difficult position and leaves her with some really tough dilemmas to deal with.

"Never far away from this story is Paddy. I think deep down, he's never going to stop loving Rhona, much as he might have accepted that he's lost her for good.

"So when she starts to face a really rough time, we have to wonder how he's going to step in, is he going to step in and what danger might he find himself in as a result of perhaps coming to the rescue of the woman that he once loved?"

Emmerdale's Pierce Harris makes another creepy move next week, as he records a sex tape with Rhona Goskirk and keeps hold of it against her wishes.

Upcoming episodes see Pierce decide to spice up his relationship with Rhona when she models some lingerie for him, filming her striptease on his tablet.

When things go further between the troubled couple, Pierce leaves the camera running and betrays Rhona the next day by ignoring her request for him to delete the X-rated footage.

Jonathan Wrather, who plays Pierce, revealed: "The story begins when Vanessa is organising a pre-wedding girls' night out for Rhona. The girls get involved with Laurel and they end up buying all of her stock to make her feel better, because they feel sorry for her.

"They buy a lot of lingerie and Vanessa pokes fun at Rhona, saying she's a bit boring and Pierce has her under the thumb. Rhona then comes home slightly annoyed with Vanessa, so Pierce cajoles her into putting the lingerie on and trying it out.

"Pierce ends up filming Rhona on his tablet. She's very self-conscious about it initially, but then gets into the swing of it at Pierce's behest. Pierce also spontaneously decides that he'll cajole Rhona into filming themselves and he coerces her into doing it.

"Rhona is uncomfortable about it and afterwards she wants him to delete it. He says he has, but he hasn't and he keeps a copy of it. So he's very deceptive."

The incident comes just as Pierce is also growing increasingly annoyed with Rhona's best friend Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick), seeing her as the main threat to his relationship.

After finally showing his true colours to Vanessa in a nasty clash, Pierce then makes the next move in their feud by engineering a way for her to 'accidentally' watch the sex tape.

Jonathan added: "Pierce and Vanessa are becoming each other's nemeses. Slowly but surely, Pierce is isolating Rhona in many ways. That includes isolating her from her friends. Vanessa is her main confidante, so he's putting a wedge between them.

"Vanessa sees right through Pierce. At this point, Pierce finds that threatening. He wants to control the situation by deliberately working it so it looks like Vanessa has gone onto his laptop without permission and found this sex tape that Rhona and Pierce have made privately.

"Afterwards, Vanessa insists that Pierce said she could use the laptop for work, but he completely denies it and lands her in it. All it does is drive a wedge between Rhona and Vanessa. It keeps her out of the picture.

"Eventually Rhona will tell Vanessa that she doesn't need or want her in her life. Initially Rhona asked Vanessa to be maid of honour at the wedding, but then she changes her mind because she feels betrayed by Vanessa."

Emmerdale reignites the furious feud between Vanessa Woodfield and Pierce Harris in tense scenes next week.

Vanessa was recently left devastated when controlling Pierce (Jonathan Wrather) managed to destroy her friendship with Rhona Goskirk thanks to some clever manipulation.

Next week's episodes see Vanessa and Rhona (Zoe Henry) take some positive steps towards rebuilding their friendship, but it's very slow progress.

There's also further acrimony when Vanessa learns that Rhona has asked Carly Hope to take her place as maid of honour at the upcoming wedding, which hurts her feelings.

When Rhona's ex Paddy Kirk advises that it's best to make peace once and for all, Vanessa swallows her pride and heads over to see her former friend.

However, as Vanessa arrives, she can't resist taking a sneaky peek at Pierce through the window and she's shocked to see that he's watching his and Rhona's sex tape on the laptop.

This proves that Pierce lied about deleting the X-rated footage and Vanessa's discovery only leaves her more determined to expose him. Can she manage it?

Michelle Hardwick, who plays Vanessa, revealed: "Vanessa is the only person in the village that is seeing Pierce's true colours. She doesn't trust him, she doesn't like him, and she's going to do whatever she can to protect her best friend.

"When Vanessa spots Pierce watching the sex tape, she can't quite believe what she's seeing. Just when she thinks that he can't possibly top his previous bad behaviour, she sees that he has kept a copy of the sex video and has blatantly lied to Rhona.

"It winds Vanessa up so much. It's that point that she says to herself, and to Paddy: 'That's it, I'm not having it. I'm going to put a stop to this once and for all'.

"She's had enough and she'll do whatever it takes. Rhona is her best friend and she's looking out for her. She'll do anything to protect her – and she'll do anything to stop Rhona and Pierce's marriage."

Asked whether Vanessa is in danger when it comes to Pierce, Michelle replied: "Anybody who crosses Pierce is. We've seen a really dark side to Pierce whenever anyone gets in his way.

"We've already seen Pierce pick up pictures of little Johnny and he's warned her not to mess with him. He's already hinted that he could harm Vanessa's family. So I think she's definitely in danger, but Vanessa can look after herself."

Emmerdale's dark storyline for Rhona Goskirk and Pierce Harris is only just beginning – with show bosses now confirming that it'll run for the rest of this year.

Fans have grown increasingly concerned for Rhona's wellbeing in recent months, as her husband-to-be Pierce (Jonathan Wrather) has become ever more possessive and controlling.

At the moment, Rhona's friend Vanessa Woodfield is the main person in the village who's worried about her, as she's seen Pierce's frightening true colours for herself. Sadly, getting others to come round to her way of thinking hasn't been easy.

Speaking to Digital Spy at an Emmerdale press event, show producer Iain MacLeod confirmed: "Rhona and Pierce will continue to escalate and deteriorate. His behaviour gets more and more dark and manipulative.

"There's a really huge story for them that will run right up to the end of the year."

In the meantime, Emmerdale has previously warned fans to watch out for a big peak in the couple's storyline later this spring. Could it be the pair's upcoming wedding?

Speaking in February, Iain confirmed: "We've taken our time and let that story develop slowly and it reaches a peak in April/May time. It doesn't come to an end there, but there's a big story explosion then.

"The episodes are heart-stoppingly dramatic – quite a tough watch, but an unbelievably big talking point heading into the summer."

Pierce Harris is to decide that life will take himself and Rhona Goskirk away from Emmerdale as he continues to try and exert his control over his fiancee – but as Rhona starts to have doubts about the wedding, could he be set to head to the Lakes alone as she calls their relationship off?
As the wedding approaches, Pierce is particularly tense and, although he tries his best to pressure Vanessa Woodfield into taking up a new post in Scotland, he becomes impatient and decides the best course of action would be for himself and Rhona to leave Emmerdale.
Pierce is a man who likes everything to be under his control and he is edgy as he knows that Vanessa has seen flashes of his true colours and could end up splitting him and Rhona up.

So Pierce meets with an old university friend and Rhona is surprised to hear them chatting about a home in the Lakes which Pierce seems keen to buy for himself and Rhona. A potential move is news to Rhona and Pierce’s lack of consultation is just another alarm bell towards what marriage to him could be like.

On the night of Rhona’s hen do, the line of questioning in a party game leaves her uncomfortable and she starts to wonder if she is doing the right thing. While Nicola King tries her best to convince Rhona that she will be fine on her big day, the seeds of doubt are clearly there.

Control freak Pierce then turns up at the party himself, clearly worried and jealous over what kinds of activities have been laid out for Rhona. But as he and Rhona talk happily and embrace, there’s another big shock in store for Pierce as Vanessa rocks up with a face very familiar – and unwelcome – to him.

As Pierce and Rhona reel from what comes next, will this be the push Rhona needs to leave him before it’s too late and could Pierce be set to head to the Lakes himself?

Or will Vanessa’s latest attempt to make Rhona see the light fail?

Emmerdale's Rhona Goskirk finally sees Pierce Harris's true colours next week as he subjects her to a sickening attack on their wedding night.

The couple are all smiles as they tie the knot in these brand new pictures, but it's only a matter of hours before their relationship takes a terrifying turn it can surely never recover from.

As the day of the wedding arrives, Pierce (Jonathan Wrather) is clearly in a strange mood as he seems stressed and apprehensive about the upcoming event.

In the end, though, Pierce eventually pulls himself together for Rhona and they exchange their vows happily with their friends watching on.

Later on, the villagers celebrate the wedding in The Woolpack but Pierce decides to take Rhona home early – still in high spirits as he carries her over the threshold.

Sadly, this celebratory atmosphere doesn't last for long as a sudden argument between the pair leads to Pierce pushing Rhona to the floor in a violent attack and raping her.

As Rhona lies on the floor in terror after Pierce's disgraceful attack, she's disgusted further when he then tries to manipulate the truth of what just happened between them.

Rhona is desperate to get away from her evil husband, but will she succeed? And if so, will she report him to the police?

Emmerdale airs these scenes on Monday, April 24 and Tuesday, April 25 at 7pm on ITV.

The relationship between sinister Pierce Harris and his mum Martha is a complex and tempestuous one in Emmerdale and it’s one that seems to be carrying a huge secret that is about to be revisited as the rapist returns to the village.
Paddy Kirk reaches out and begs Pierce to come home for Rhona, completely oblivious to the fact that he brutally attacked her. And when Pierce does indeed show up in the cottage, it prompts a terrified Rhona to bravely return to the police and report her ordeal.
But, according to Jonathan Wrather, who plays the despicable villain, there is more to find out about what has warped Pierce – including whether he may have committed such an attack before.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk recently, he shared: ‘Martha, his mother, has been introduced, and she’s harbouring some secret. She’s coming back and she is so charming and so nice, and so plausible – there’s something slightly mysterious about it but she is harbouring some kind of secret, and we don’t know what that is yet.
‘It could be something very big – it could be something he’s done like this in the past, it could be something else. Do we believe what Martha said, or do we believe Pierce?’

Pondering whether Pierce may have committed rape before, Jonathan admitted that he didn’t know but added: ‘In a way I think it’s predictable if he’s done it before. I think it’s quite interesting if he hasn’t, and everything’s been leading towards this.’

Whatever happens, there are still dark times ahead – but as Rhona heads to the police, it could unsettle control freak Pierce more than we have yet seen. Jonathan said: ‘He knows the law, so it’s going to be interesting to see how he manages, or if he manages, to work his way around this. On the surface he’s a swan, but underneath he’s paddling like hell, because he’s panicking.

‘But he doesn’t give much away, as you know, because he has this duality to him, and that’s what’s eerie about him, I suppose…’

Emmerdale's Rhona Goskirk gets one step closer to justice next week as Pierce Harris is finally charged with rape.

Rhona (Zoe Henry) has been waiting to hear whether Pierce will face trial after taking the brave step of reporting him to the police for his brutal attack on her.

Next week's Emmerdale episodes see Rhona start to doubt her decision after discovering who's responsible for a spate of sinister break-ins at her home.

Feeling nervous and fearful, Rhona tells her best friend Vanessa Woodfield and ex-husband Paddy Kirk that she plans to drop the charges against Pierce, believing that it's best to just move on.

Rhona even visits Pierce at work to tell him the news, but his reaction is so smug and jovial that she quickly changes her mind again, deciding to proceed with her fight for justice after all.

When Rhona returns home, she's relieved to learn that Pierce is definitely being charged – but she knows that it's just the beginning of a tough battle ahead.

Confiding in Vanessa once again, Rhona admits that she's terrified of how Pierce might twist things as part of his defence in court, knowing that the trial will be a huge ordeal for her.

Vanessa is adamant that her friend has done the right thing, but how will Rhona cope with the challenges still to come?

whats the mother playing at?

I think she's that desperate to have a relationship with her son she's convinced herself that she must help him and he's probably spun her a web of lies to make himself look like the victim and made it look like Rhona is exaggerating or just bitter and wants some sort of revenge on him.

Or she is a psycho control freak aswell and that's where he gets it from.

Emmerdale's Jonathan Wrather has confirmed that Pierce Harris WILL be punished for his horrific attack on Rhona Goskirk.

He popped in to Loose Women today (July 13) and told them that there will be "some form of retribution", and it will be realistic.

"We're heading towards a court case, it's going to trial, that's where we're up to in the story," he said.

"There's a kind of the duty of care with the audience. There will be some form of retribution. It has to be realistic."

He also said he was impressed by the "fantastic" writing for the storyline, explaining they have done a lot of research to make it as authentic as possible.

"We had researchers. Zoe and I did our own research. We wanted to make it as truthful as possible."

He added: "It was immensely enlightening. Some of the statistics are very sad, it's kind of shocking.

"There is a common perception that the perpetrator is a predatory male, after dark, down an alley, but it's much closer to home."

Upcoming scenes will see Pierce plead not guilty to rape and the trial date will be set for later in the month, but Rhona will face even more pressure as some new evidence turns up that could hinder her case.

Next week's episodes see Pierce face court for his evil attack on his wife Rhona Goskirk, but the big question is who the jury will believe after hearing both parties give evidence.

Emmerdale's new promo sees Rhona bravely preparing to recall her ordeal in front of the courtroom, promising to tell the truth as she's questioned by the prosecution and Pierce's defence.

Pierce also watches on anxiously, knowing that he'll be heading to jail if the court case doesn't go well for him.

The trial week features another return stint from Pierce's twisted mother Martha, while we'll also see Vanessa Woodfield giving evidence in support of Rhona.

While the verdict itself has been kept under wraps by Emmerdale, there are rumours that Jonathan Wrather – who plays Pierce – will be leaving the ITV soap either way.

Jonathan has also promised that there will be consequences for Pierce, but will that be a legal-based comeuppance at the trial or repercussions of a different kind?

Speaking on ITV's Loose Women last week, he revealed: "We're heading towards a court case, it's going to trial, that's where we're up to in the story.

"There's a kind of duty of care with the audience. There will be some form of retribution. It has to be realistic."

Emmerdale's Rhona Goskirk comes face-to-face with Pierce Harris next week as she pays him a visit in jail.

Rhona bravely decides to speak with Pierce (Jonathan Wrather) as she searches for closure following his conviction for raping her.

Pierce was recently found guilty when he faced court for his evil attack on his wife, but Rhona (Zoe Henry) has since struggled to get her life back on track again.

Next week, we'll see Rhona lean in for a kiss with her ex-husband Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) when he continues to support her through the difficult situation.

The next day, Rhona is horrified to wake up and see Pierce lying next to her, but she quickly realises that it's just her imagination.

When Paddy then tries to reassure her about what happened between them the previous night, Rhona has other issues on her mind and insists that she needs to see Pierce at the jail.

Will the difficult visit give Rhona the closure she needs?

Whatever happens, it's clear that Rhona will have some major decisions to make about her future. As caring Paddy later lays his heart on the line, admitting that he wants to be with her properly, does Rhona feel the same way? Or will Paddy be left with a broken heart all over again?

I really like Jonathan Wrather as an actor, so I am pleased he is back. Emmerdale need more good actors! However I was hoping that Pierce would redeem himself in some way, but if he did murder Graham there is little chance of that.

Note: The following article contains discussion of rape and sexual misconduct that some readers may find upsetting.

Emmerdale looks set to revisit the mutual animosity between Pierce Harris and Vanessa Woodfield.

The ITV soap delivered a huge storyline twist this week, as Pierce returned to the village following his release from prison and killed Graham Foster.

With more to come from Pierce's storyline over the next few weeks, it seems likely that the dangerous villain will be getting up to no good – and that could include settling old scores with Vanessa.

In a recent chat with Digital Spy and other media about his return, Jonathan Wrather – who plays Pierce – confirmed that he has been filming with Michelle Hardwick (Vanessa).

Jonathan explained: "It's just great being back and working with Zoe Henry, Michelle, everybody. Everyone around the building has just been so charming and welcoming.

"I forgot how much I really loved it, actually. It's like putting on an old pair of slippers. It's like being back home. It's been a wonderful experience."

Vanessa was one of the first villagers to see Pierce's dark side during his first stint in the show, which saw them frequently at odds.

When Vanessa saw Pierce's nasty side and became concerned for her best friend Rhona Goskirk, the villain fought back by trying to turn everyone against her.

Vanessa also took the stand in Pierce's rape trial following his attack on Rhona, briefly lying in court in order to improve the chances of a conviction.

Jonathan has also confirmed that – unsurprisingly – he'll be sharing scenes with Zoe Henry soon too.

He said: "There's no doubt it will be terrifying when Rhona finds out Pierce is out and wonders what he's going to do. The effect it has on her can go a number of different ways and we will see that.

"It's interesting. Certainly she reacts in a way that we don't know what she is capable of, let's put it that way…"
