Carla can't keep quiet after Rob threatens her.

When Nick tries to engage Carla in a conversation about wedding menus with Robert, Carla makes excuses and is unable to look Robert in the eye.

Later, Carla visits Rob in prison. Rob tells her that if Johnny doesn't pay up, he'll reveal the truth to Aidan and Kate. Carla points out that it's not her problem and leaves. However, Carla has had enough and leads Kate and Aidan into the back room at The Rovers, intent on telling them the truth.

Meanwhile, Roy confronts Nessa with the letter. Nessa is embarrassed and admits that she and Alan were having an affair. Ken is appalled at her admission. Nessa implores Roy not to tell Cathy and admits there are more incriminating letters, so she asks Roy to take her to Cathy's house to retrieve them.

Roy ignores his better judgement and agrees, but as they arrive, they find Cathy in floods of tears having already discovered the offending letters.

Elsewhere, Kevin is embarrassed when he receives a hamper of sweets from Joanne. Over lunch, Joanne suggests they spend the evening watching a DVD, and Kevin has little choice but to agree. Masking her jealousy, Anna agrees to attend another singles night with Erica.

Also, handing Todd a book on flowers, Tracy suggests he reads and inwardly digests it if he wants a job in her flower shop. Amy later tests Todd on flower names. Will Todd pass the test?

Finally, when Norris remarks on how subdued Mary has been recently, will Rita reveal that Brendan is in fact a married man?

Carla drops the bombshell that Johnny is her dad. Staring at Johnny in disbelief, Kate and Aidan are appalled to discover that Johnny always suspected Carla was his daughter but kept it a secret for all these years.

When Liz inadvertently lets slip that Johnny's wife died after she found out about his affair and stepped in front of a car, Kate and Aidan are horrified. As Johnny desperately tries to explain himself, will Kate and Aidan be able to forgive him?

Meanwhile, Cathy is desperately upset and orders Nessa out of her house. Cathy is hurt to realise that Roy knew of the affair and was helping Nessa to retrieve the letters. Roy apologises profusely, but Cathy asks him to leave. Later, when Nessa grumbles to Ken about the way Cathy treated her, Ken is appalled by her selfishness. Could their relationship be on the rocks?

Elsewhere, Erica drags Anna off to the singles night, while Kevin suffers an evening watching a DVD with Joanne. When Kevin later finds Anna in the kebab shop after the singles night, he flirts with her and offers to walk her home.

Also, Tracy tries to talk to Robert in the Bistro, but he blanks her and heads back into the kitchen. Passing Robert on her way home, Carla ignores him. Robert grabs Carla by the arm and suggests she should lose the attitude, as he could make life very difficult for her. Carla is unnerved.

Finally, Norris and Rita voice their concerns to Mary about her affair with Brendan.

Carla arrives for work. To pre-empt any gossip, she announces to the factory girls that Johnny is her dad. In an attempt to calm Aidan down, Eva tells him how she only found out Leanne was her sister in later life. Aidan is dismissive.

Later, Johnny promises Aidan and Kate that he always loved their mother and begs their forgiveness. Aidan sees red and punches Johnny, while Kate tells him that it would be best if he found somewhere else to live. Will Johnny be forced to leave the street?

Meanwhile, despondent Roy drops the theatre tickets that Cathy bought him for Christmas in the bin. Determined to put things right, Nessa secretly retrieves them and she and Ken attempt to persuade Cathy to give Roy a second chance. Clearly hurt, Cathy orders Nessa to get out of her sight. Arriving at the cafe, will Cathy be able to bring herself to forgive Roy?

Elsewhere, when Joanne turns up at the garage, Kevin paints on a smile and secretly wishes she had left him alone. Kevin admits to Anna that he doesn't fancy Joanne, but doesn't know how to let her down gently. Determined to see her rival off, what has Anna got up her sleeve?

Also today, Erica invites Dev round for dinner and Mary offers to babysit. Later, Mary melts when Brendan presents her with flowers, assuring her that he's never been so happy since she became his girlfriend. Dev is annoyed when Mary announces that she can no longer babysit as she needs to prepare for her date.

Roy unburdens himself to Carla, telling her how he and Cathy have broken up and it's all his fault. Carla is adamant that Roy shouldn't give up and must try harder to win her round.

Cathy gathers up Alan and Nessa's love letters at home, drops them in the bin and sets fire to them. Roy takes Carla's words on board and sets off for Cathy's house, with Nessa in pursuit. A fire has taken hold of the house and Cathy is struggling to breathe, but will Roy and Nessa arrive on time?

Meanwhile, having discovered some graffiti on the garage wall, Kevin phones the council. Later, Tim and Sally lead Sophie and Kevin to the ginnel and reveal the blank wall where Maddie's mural used to be. Kevin blames himself, realising the council must have cleaned it off. Sally vows to kick up a fuss. Sophie also clocks the chemistry between Kevin and Anna.

Elsewhere, when Brendan calls for Mary, Norris gives him short shrift and tells Mary she is making a terrible mistake. Will Mary have the support of any of her friends?

Also, Kate does her best to restore order in the factory, but Carla and Aidan refuse to discuss the situation with Johnny.

Cathy lies semi-conscious in her smoke-filled living room, crying out for help. As Roy and Nessa let themselves in, they're engulfed in smoke. Roy orders Nessa to phone the fire brigade as he rescues Cathy from her burning house. Thanking him for saving her life, Cathy collapses in Roy's arms. Will Roy's heroics bring the couple back together?

As Cathy is loaded into the ambulance, she bitterly explains to Nessa that she started the fire while burning the offending love letters. Nessa arrives in the pub in a state and tells Ken about the fire at Cathy's house. Taking Nessa back to Number 1, Ken suggests they go their separate ways. Will Nessa be able to talk Ken round, or is their relationship over?

Meanwhile, Anna leads Sophie, Sally, Tim and Kevin to the ginnel and reveals Craig and Caitlin hard at work on a replacement mural in memory of Maddie. Sophie is touched as Craig explains it was Anna's idea. In the café, Kevin suggests to Anna that they should bin the singles night and go out with each other. How will Anna respond?

Elsewhere, Brendan takes Mary for a meal. He tells her there is nowhere in the world he'd rather be and gazes at her adoringly. Mary swoons. When Mary suggests to Brendan that they should finish their evening at Number 7 as Dev is out, Brendan is thrilled. Alone together, Brendan assures Mary that she means everything to him. Taken in by his flattery, will Mary lead Brendan upstairs?

Also, as Nick and Robert talk wedding menus, Kate arrives with some factory paperwork. Grabbing the excuse to leave, Carla hurries out with Kate.

I wondered that . I think Alan is Cathy's late husband and Alex is Cathy's nephew, with Down's syndrome. Not sure. Is Alex Nessa's son. ???

Ok so who is looking after him then while Nessa is having her way with Ken. I thought he couldn't live an independent life or is that all forgotten about now ? ! Even if he can , which I doubt, she hasn't mentioned him since she has been on the Street . Sorry but any mother with a child with some disability would mention or at least visit their child to see they were ok . I doubt he could look after himself properly…..wash, cook, shop, manage money , the list is endless. It is this lack of attention to detail that drive me NUTS.

But you are talking "real life" where having a child
is a big responsiblity -even more so where there is
a disablity.

But Soap parents dont have to let child care
worries disrupt their "affairs" and Nessa is
matched with.someone who passed all care
for his twins to his m-in- law ( in Scotland) when
his first wife died.
And seldom even saw them - as they were growing-up.

Ken & Nessa - a match made in heaven!

Who knows, this show is a mess. Perhaps this was when Blackburn was shown the door.

I thought we were heading for Leanne and Robert.

Alex is indeed Nessa's son, and Alan Cathy's deceased husband that it will emerge she had an affair with. This is an awful way to write Roy out for 3 months (I'm guessing that's the thinking behind this particular storyline, sorry - plot device.)

this would be more for cathy exiting than roy

I think Roy will go, feeling guilty that he's kept the secret from Cathy briefly. It would have been bad enough to find out anyway, but Roy makes it worse. I think it's out of character for him, but there we go.

I thought it should have gone that he got cold feet and disappeared somewhere, but obviously that wouldn't be dramatic enough.

there is no need for cathy to stay when roy is gone unless she moves in with roy or anna if she has space

I thought Alex was well able to look after himself. People live in supported housing and have key workers if issues as far as i am aware. Last week i went to a charity that supports people with learning difficulties and one had recently moved somewhere on own with a friend and was loving it. Nessa does not seem like a very responsible parent

No - she doesnt!
Having an official support system is good
and can take pressure off parents as they
and their child get older.
I know one couple with a Downs Syndrome
daughter ( in her late 30s - they are 60 ish)
The fact of her having support doesnt mean
they dont care and keep contact / help-as any
parent would !!

Well the Christmas day epidode was not that good. This whole lapland thing is over the top when he is getting the family indebt to do it. They need long term security so Fizz can get through this not huge money worries. Felt so sad for Mary I hate this storyline she needs happiness. Why does David call his mum Gail thats not nice. Glad Sarah and everyone happy about the pregnancy now.

I think we've all lost respect for this village idiot version of Gail. Let's hope Kate Oates takes her back to the strong character she used to be.

Funnily enough Dazzle, I was reading an article earlier today about Kate Oates wanting to bring in more humour to the street.

I suppose it depends on the type of comedy. Gail can be given witty lines without being reduced to a blithering idiot. It's good to hear the older characters will get more screen time, but the quality of the writing and characterisation is just as important.

Steve is another character for whom funny = stupid in recent years, which is not consistent with the history of the character or his running of two successful businesses.

Classic Corrie humour was often well-observed and sharp. I hope Kate Oates realises that.

I know you dont watch ED Dazzle -but one
thing that Kate Oates has done is to give
quite varied and detailed storylines to
a number of older actors. The actors
can carry the parts because they have
a lot of experience..( inc theatrical).
There has been comedy , dramatic
everyday and tragic stories!

Most comments from.viewers are positive
will one or two complaining about too
many "old people" .But the age profile of
a typical.village would be higher than
average!

Plenty stories for younger characters!!

Knowingly having an affair with a married man is of course very wrong, and I'd have no sympathy with most people in Mary's position.

However, in this case I'd say she she's embarked on the relationship because she was extremely lonely, so I can't help but feel for her. She never has any luck, and she initially fell for Brendan thinking he was single. She ought to have run a mile after that, but perhaps she was in too deep? I think she's quite a vulnerable person who really needs protecting from the Brendans of this world.

Coronation Street's Carla Connor is pushed to take drastic action tonight (January 4) after her scheming brother Rob threatens her.

When Carla (Alison King) pays a visit to Rob in prison and questions his recent blackmail, she's left furious as he continues to issue warnings and ultimatums.

Rob knows that he still has leverage over his family and vows to tell Kate (Faye Brookes) and Aidan (Shayne Ward) the truth about Carla's real father unless he gets the money he's been demanding.

Unwilling to be pushed around by Rob, no-nonsense Carla heads straight back to the cobbles and decides that it's time Kate and Aidan heard the truth from her. Will the Connors be torn apart forever as Carla drops her bombshell?

Coronation Street airs tonight (January 4) at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
