Coronation Street legend Eileen Derbyshire is taking a break from the soap.

The actress, who has played Emily Bishop since 1961, has asked show producers for six months away from the cobbles.

Derbyshire will make her temporary exit early in the New Year, according to a report in The Sun today (November 23).

Details of how she'll be written out have yet to be revealed, but one rumoured possibility is that Emily could head off to go travelling with her nephew Spider.

Derbyshire, 84, is the longest-running female cast member on Coronation Street and a firm favourite with fans.

Some of Emily's most recent scenes have seen her questioning Ken Barlow (Bill Roache) on his relationship with newcomer Nessa Warner, expressing fears that he is moving on from his late wife Deirdre too soon.

Alison King, who plays Carla Connor, will also be taking an extended break from Coronation Street in 2016.

Other cast members such as Brooke Vincent (Sophie Webster), David Neilson (Roy Cropper) and Les Dennis (Michael Rodwell) have also asked for shorter breaks so they can take part in theatre shows.

Yes that is a matter of concern. Maybe Caitlin can be the resident baby sitter. Or we need to alert social services and give the Rovers Return address for those parents propping up the bar without child care in place

its a worry??!!

Fiz and Tyrone both working with two young children

Gary and Izzy with Jake, Kevin and Jack

these parents all need 9-5 day-care for their children followed by supping time in the Rovers/Bistro??

Mary has the twin covered, and Ken helps a bit with Amy and Simon, but I am seriously worried for the others

Kevin has a childminder, I suppose her broken leg must have healed again by now as Jenny Bradley has left for the time being ... I presume that Izzy also has a childcarer for when she is working :hmm:

Coronation Street will air Emily Bishop's exit scenes on New Year's Day as she bows out of Weatherfield to head overseas.

It was announced last month that Eileen Derbyshire would be taking a break from the show after she asked producers for six months away from the cobbles.

Although details about Emily's temporary exit weren't clear at the time, it has now been revealed that she will head to Peru to join her nephew Spider.

The story will kick off when Billy Mayhew senses Emily's yearning to volunteer overseas and encourages her to go for it.

However, after Emily books her flight and announces her big decision at Ken's party, not everyone is thrilled by the news.

While Audrey and Rita are pleased that she is following her dream, Norris is disapproving and fails to support her.

As Emily's loved ones gather to see her off on her trip, Norris arrives and hands her a bag full of pencils, explaining that they are to help with her voluntary work. Does this mean that the pair will clear the air before she leaves?

Derbyshire is the show's longest-running female character, having played Emily since 1961.

Coronation Street will air her exit scenes on New Year's Day on ITV.

eileen should relax and take it easy enjoy her twilight years

I think.the actress has a very sensible attitude
to life.
Shes kept her private life seperate from acting/
Corrie throughout her career.
Doesnt get involved in controversy and her lack
of comments on some of her colleagues more
colourful real life exploits is more telling than
paragraphs of comments!

This storyline is out of character though. At her age it is an unlikely move.

in some ways I agree with your comment swmc
but "Emily" although a bit saintly ( for me)
on occasions is a person who tries to do
good in a practical way. I have known
a couple of people personally who have waited
til quite a way past retirement age to do something
similar(.but were still.younger than Emily )

I looked on internet and found International
Volunteering HQ - they say their oldest
volunteer is 82 and one ( of many) locations
is Peru!! Perhaps SWs saw the same site!:)
:hmm:
It is a bit of a push perhaps for the character
in terms of age but she has always been
a bit of an activist ( protesting up trees with:)
Spider)! People age very differently in
health & attitude. So I do overall find it
at least possible if not probable?Unlike
some Soap storyline.

Now if the character involved was Rita .........!!

I disagree - remember Emily's tree top protest a few years ago?

when the opportunity has presented itself Emily has stood up for a cause in ways people of her age normally wouldn't

plus she was always close to Spider, so if she was to go volunteering with anyone it would be him

standing up for a cause yes she does like doing the right good thing but going to another country as a volunteer alone now at her age seems wrong to me and out of place for the character

is spider off with toyah?

It would be topical but could cause other
problems?
The C of E is split about gay marriages and
clergy having gay relationships!
In the last few days a bishop of one
diocese has banned a clergyman from
holding services - because he married
his long term male partner last year.

I have missed bits of the story so not
sure if Billy has told his bishop about
his relationship with Sean! I do
remember Billy pointing out the need for
discretion.!!

If they did adopt/foster I thought checks
were made with employers-so what
started about a baby could lead to ramifications
for Billy -if he is prepared to publicly acknowledge
his relationship with Sean.
Its the sort of story makes news in local
papers!

She is 84, so can´t blame her for wanting to retire, I had a feeling the departure would not be temporary. It would be nice if they did what they did with Betty Eagleton on Emmerdale and see her skype with Norris or Rita on certain occasions, like Christmas :)

CONFIRMED!! Eileen Derbyshire will NOT be returning to her role as Emily Bishop! :(

Coronation Street's Eileen Derbyshire leaving the cobbles after 55 years ending her reign as the soap's longest serving female cast member
Corrie legend Eileen Derbyshire will not return to the cobbles, ending her 55-year career as the soap’s longest serving female cast member.
Eileen, 85, who has played goody-two-shoes Emily Bishop since 1961, took six months off from the show last November.
But she extended her break and has now been absent for 12 months.
Corrie bosses last night confirmed that while Eileen has not told them she will quit, there are no plans in place for her to return.
A show source said: “Eileen has been off for a long time, and there is no expectation that she will be back.
“All of her cast mates have accepted she won’t be returning.
“She’s 85 and has been out of the show for a year, so she probably would have found it tough to get back into the fast pace of filming.
“That aside, Eileen’s family is her absolute priority, and she has devoted herself to them since deciding on her break last November.
“Of course, as far as the bosses are concerned, there will always be a place for her on the show.
“She has not told them she wants to quit, but those around her know she won’t be back.”
“And her friends on set know she’s on the brink of retirement.
“It’s very sad, and she will be sorely missed by everyone who knows her. But they know she has to do what’s right for her.”
Eileen, who won an MBE for services to drama in 2010, is one of the ITV soap’s most recognisable faces.
Only Bill Roache, 84, has been on the show longer.
He has played Ken Barlow since the first episode in 1960.
Eileen’s character Emily, a devout Christian, backed out of marrying shop manager Leonard Swindley on their wedding day in 1964.
Other big plots included a breakdown and an attempt on her life by Gail Platt’s husband Richard Hillman.
After she decided to take a break, writers explained her absence with a storyline that saw her go to Peru to spend time with hippy nephew Spider.

Yes, still meant to be in Peru ... think we are meant to think that Norris has regular updates with Emily but too many other things going on at the moment for this to be shown. Sharon Marshall said on This Morning just now that Eileen Derbyshire has not said anything to Corrie so until she does, she is considered to be returning ..... I doubt she ever will though :(

I'm wondering if she's been brought back in order to pass away off screen after a while? If Eileen Derbyshire was coming back, Emily would have come back to Weatherfield directly, I think..

Could it be that the show is overrun with a lot of young people, and need some elderly characters, we lost lovely Betty, and Ken is not in it much now, what ever happened to the
lovely old Granny with grey hair looking after the kids, as mothers work, where I live, I see lots of Grandparents struggling to cope with childminding, how is it not shown in the street?
After all this is the next generation!!!

This is hopefully the start of moving away from younger terrible actors and these much respected elder residents can show how you don't need to overact
