Veteran actress Liz Dawn has come out of retirement for a cameo role in Emmerdale.
Having played Vera Duckworth in Coronation Street for over thirty years, Liz Dawn is set to appear in the Christmas day episode, playing Mrs Winterbottom, a decidedly demanding guest staying at Eric Pollard’s B&B.

“There’s only one show I’d come out of retirement for and it’s Emmerdale, particularly as I’ve celebrated my 76th birthday this week (8 November) so I wanted to mark the occasion. I love my character.

What a feisty lady she is! Giving them all a run for their money in the B&B on Christmas Day. She’s so rude to them which isn’t like me at all.

The cast and production team at Emmerdale have been so lovely and really looked after me and I was particularly pleased to be directed by Tony Prescott.

I’ve worked with him over many years at Corrie and he’s a lovely man, really good at what he does and very creative. I’ll be looking forward to seeing my scene on Christmas Day and introducing you all to Mrs Winterbottom.”

Filming has taken place this week and is due to air in Emmerdale’s hour long Christmas day episode.

Liz Dawn swapped the cobbles for the Dales on Christmas Day, and it's given her the desire to return to TV.

The Coronation Street legend came out of retirement in Emmerdale's hour-long episode for a cameo as Mrs Winterbottom, a very demanding guest staying at Eric Pollard's B&B.

The actress admitted that it fulfilled a "career-long ambition" given she's a "Yorkshire girl".

"In a way it's so strange that I became famous for Coronation Street, which is Lancashire through and through," Dawn told The Mirror. "It's only a cameo but I would love to do more episodes and bob back in and out from time to time to get more involved."

The actress retired as Corrie's Vera Duckworth in 2008 after being diagnosed with lung disease emphysema in mid-2004, and revealed she was nervous making her comeback in a rival soap, even though she was playing a character "not a bit like Vera".

"It did feel a bit strange playing another character, especially as I knew all the crew recognised me as having played Vera, and I felt a bit edgy. But that's not a bad thing - a few nerves to give you a bit of a lift," Dawn explained.

"In the end I was worried over nothing. Everybody I was working with was lovely, and you know when you've been doing something for so long, it was just like riding a bike - it's a different character but it's the same method."

Dawn's final scenes in Coronation Street saw the fan favourite die peacefully at home, but she later made one final appearance as a ghost in 2010 when her beloved husband Jack passed away.

It would be odd seeing Mrs Winterbottom again. If she was that unhappy with the B&B, she wouldn't stay there again.

They might introduce her as replacement for Betty or Edna character .. rare appearances due to Liz´s health issues but the ood appearance for certain occasions could work ... Sandy needs a battle axe to keep him in line, especially once Ashley´s condition becomes more and more apparent and eventually known ..

It was a brief cameo but enjoyable I wouldn't mind her being back as Perdita said above some appearances every now and again
