Former Brookside and Waterloo Road star Nicola Stephenson is rejoining the soap world with a new role on Emmerdale.
The actress is being introduced to the ITV soap as a new character called Tess, a teaching assistant who will cross paths with Paddy Kirk.

Little more is known about Tess at this stage, but show bosses have teased that she is a good-natured and warm character whose life will take an unexpected turn when she meets Paddy.
Speaking of her new role, Stephenson commented: "I'm thrilled to be joining the cast of Emmerdale. It's a British institution and I'm very excited about the storylines that they have planned for my character."
Emmerdale's series producer Kate Oates added: "I am delighted to welcome an actress of Nicola's calibre to the show. We are keeping the exact details of Tess's storyline under wraps, but it is safe to say she will mix things up in the village."
Stephenson previously played the role of Brookside's Margaret Clemence, who famously shared UK TV's first pre-watershed lesbian kiss with Anna Friel's character Beth Jordache in 1994.
More recently, she portrayed Waterloo Road's art teacher Allie Westbrook and had a starring role in ITV's Safe House.

The actress looks rather plain looking I guess this is where British and American soaps differ. In the USA this actress would never get this role due to her plain jane appearance. But maybe the UK is more progressive where average looking people like this actress can get this role? I just think Rhona is way better looking than this lady. If they are looking for a woman stir trouble for Rhona and Paddy why not choose a woman who actually is pretty? This lady I feel is not attractive enough

The latest Emmerdale episodes show that Paddy has been trying to set up Marlon for something romantic. As Marlon is not maybe overly good-looking, then Tess could be way above his league? Maybe Tess (actor Nicola Stephenson, real age 44yo) is yet just another lonesome hungry woman who wants some fool to give her money and things? But, of course, this is soapland. Marlon (actor Mark Charnock, real age 46yo) joined Emmerdale in 1996. I think he is is still soap-married to Laurel but his relationship with her is no longer something beyond other than taking care of the kids? His script is maybe overdue for a relationship with a predatory female visiting Emmerdale for just what she can get?
I suspect that Tess will initially try to seduce Paddy from his relationship with Rhona, even if Paddy means initially for Tess to have an internet dating relationship with Marlon. Maybe this is an Emmerdale love-square (there are so many ordinary, run-of-the-mill, three-somes in this small village with otherwise boring and predictable small Village-Life people maybe! Just move on everyone! Haha!). Love life is so blind and cruel at times, it seems! Maybe we never get what we really want/deserve in soapland?

Former Brookside and Waterloo Road star Nicola Stephenson makes her first appearance on Emmerdale tonight (September 25).
The actress has joined the show's cast in the role of newcomer Tess, a teaching assistant who will cross paths with Paddy Kirk.
The storyline kicks off in tonight's special double bill of Emmerdale, which will also feature the shock shooting of resident villain Robert Sugden.
When Paddy accompanies Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) on a night out, two ladies catch the attention of his newly-single friend.

Marlon is keen to get to know both of the women a little better, but the meeting with Tess and her friend Chloe could have bigger consequences for Paddy.
Little more is known about Tess's storyline at the moment, but show bosses have tipped her to put the cat amongst the pigeons in a few weeks' time.
When Stephenson's casting in Emmerdale was announced last month, she commented: "I'm thrilled to be joining the cast of Emmerdale. It's a British institution and I'm very excited about the storylines that they have planned for my character."

Unless of course her husband is infertile, she didn't know and it caught her out when she told him she was pregnant. Husband could have done an Ian Beale also (bet he wishes Bobby had been Garry Hobbs's now!)

Emmerdale's vet Paddy Kirk is a guilty man since his one-night stand with Tess, a married woman he met in a bar while out on the town with Marlon. But soap newcomer Nicola Stephenson (Tess) thinks fans will forgive her once they know her...
Former Brookside star Nicola told What's on TV: “I don’t think people will hate Tess as she does come across as a really nice person. This has happened to two people who would seemingly never do this. Hopefully it will make the audience feel very uneasy in their own relationships. This could happen to anybody.”
To ease his troubled conscience, Paddy is paying extra attention to his wife, Rhona, hoping she won't notice his shifty behaviour. But Paddy's set to get a shock when Tess unexpectedly turns up in the village on Bonfire Night!
“Paddy's made a few mistakes in the past, but nothing quite like this, which has thrown the character out of kilter," said Dominic. "People will be thinking, ‘No, don’t do that. You’ve got a wife and a child. Why are you doing it?’ But I love it... he can't always be a saint."
But with Tess set to be in the village for a while after landing a job as teaching assistant to Paddy's stepson, Leo, how long will Paddy and Tess be able to keep their guilty secret from Rhona?
Paddy gets a shock when Tess turns up in the village in Emmerdale on Wednesday, November 4 on ITV.

Their on-screen affair is set to cause fireworks on Emmerdale, but Nicola Stephenson has joked that her new co-star Dominic Brunt isn't too comfortable with their kisses.
The former Brookside and Waterloo Road actress has joined the ITV soap in the role of teaching assistant Tess Harris, who slept with Brunt's character Paddy Kirk when they met on a night out a few weeks ago.
Tess and Paddy both thought that their passionate encounter was just a one-off, but they've now discovered that they'll be spending a lot more time together as Tess is the teaching assistant of Paddy's stepson Leo.
Speaking on ITV's Good Morning Britain about landing the storyline, Stephenson commented: "It's what you want, really! It's really a gift to go into an established show and get quite a racy storyline straight away. Just go in, stir things up and go home again. It's lovely - it's a real treat.
"And I know loads of people in Emmerdale, weirdly. Jeff Hordley, I went to senior school with. He was my mate when I was 15, so it's really nice to see him and his wife Zoe [Henry]. There's also Gillian Kearney who was in Brookside."
However, discussing her new on-screen lover, she laughed: "He doesn't like kissing me! I don't think he likes it! I'm not bothered - I'll kiss anybody quite frankly, if the part calls for it!
"He's such a gentleman, Dominic who plays Paddy, he's absolutely joyous to work with. He's very much a gentleman so he'll only kiss me on the take. I think, 'What's wrong with me?!'
Stephenson added that she is delighted she is still remembered for another soap kiss - the landmark moment when her Brookside character Margaret Clemence locked lips with Beth Jordache (Anna Friel) in 1994.
This was the first ever pre-watershed lesbian kiss to be broadcast on British TV.
She said today: "It's lovely, isn't it? It's really nice. We wouldn't have thought that at the time, when we were doing it. It was good fun and everything, but it's astonishing to think that people still talk about it."

Tess and Paddy met at the singles bar night (in Robblesfield?) on Friday 25 September 2015, on the same night as when Robert was shot in Emmerdale. Tess and Paddy then made love in the back of Tess's car before she drove him back to near the village.
Since then, they have met again because Tess has become the teaching assistant for Paddy's son Leo.
ITV spoilers for Thursday 3 December say that Paddy finds Tess upset in her car at the school and suggests they talk as friends, but when Tess unburdens her marriage troubles, the pair realise they want more and go in for a kiss. Despite feeling guilty for sleeping with Tess again, Paddy is saddened when she suggests it can't happen anymore. Unable to get Tess out of his mind, he texts her but is left wondering if he's done the right thing.
Then on Friday 4 December, Tess is taken aback when Paddy tells her about his and Rhona's adoption meeting, but she also has news of her own.
Friday 4 December is ten weeks after Tess and Paddy first had sex.
(There are no prizes for guessing what comes next... :))

In an Inside Soap interview, Nicola Stephenson hints there may be more to her character [Tess] than it seems...
Nicola said, "I don't know yet where the writers intend to go with Tess. It could well go either way. She might be someone the public are going to hate further down the line - but at the moment, she seems like a very nice person. Tess is just in a really unhappy marriage, and has ended up getting involved in a situation she shouldn't have. A lot of people do in real life, don't they?"
Nicola suggests we take Tess' words with a pinch of salt... "She is kind of remorseful about sleeping with Paddy - but she's also preparing herself for the moment he turns around and rejects her again," admits the actress. "Whenever Paddy gets scared, he becomes quite cold towards Tess, so she's simply trying to protect herself from any heartbreak."
"Maybe Tess has problems in her marriage that Paddy doesn't have in his," wonders the star. "But I think there are other driving forces behind what she's doing to Paddy - it could be to do with her not having any children of her own. We'll just have to wait and see."
"It would be good if there turned out to be something not nice about her, though," adds Nicola. "If she ended being a little unhinged, I'd absolutely love it!"

Does Tess really love Paddy or is she just using him?
I think Paddy represents everything Tess wants. She’s not happy in her marriage and the reason for that is her husband has never wanted children. She has a very deep sadness in her that she wants a family and Paddy represents the stable family man, which is exactly what she wants. I think she’s pinning everything on him. The more she falls in love with that family man the more she falls out of love with her husband Pierce. You get the sense things are falling apart at home.
Why does she pretend she’s interested in Marlon?
She feels used at this point and is furious with Paddy. I don’t think she intends to set out and seduce Marlon but he turns up and she finds herself in a situation where she could make Paddy jealous. So she goes for it and it works.
It works and Paddy invites her for a weekend away at a conference, how doe she react to this invite?
She’s thrilled, she’s got what she’s wanted so she’s made up. She doesn’t feel guilty but she’s furious when Rhona calls and he backs down. She’s furious he’s offered her something only to snatch it away again. Again he’s made her feel worthless and not as important as his wife. Everytime it happens her self-esteem gets knocked more and more until she’s a desperate woman.
How does Rhona nearly catch them?
Rhona calls to say they have been accepted by the adoption panel and they are going to get a baby. He has a massive pang of guilt and decides he needs to leave. She sees him packing, meanwhile Rhona thinks she’s going to surprise him at the hotel. She turns up at the hotel and Paddy makes Tess hide in the bathroom while they talk.
Is Tess tempted to reveal herself there and then?
<pI think at that moment she’s not because she thinks Paddy is going to send her away. It all happens too quickly.
So how does Tess end up having a drink with Paddy and Rhona?
She comes downstairs and she’s so angry she wants to see Paddy squirm. She’s quite desperate so there’s a bit of her that thinks she could let it all out in the open and then he would be hers. But also, she knows if she ruins things for him then she runs the risk of him not wanting her. I think deep down she believes Paddy would be much happier with her.
Her actions on screen are wreaking havoc, but Emmerdale star Nicola Stephenson has defended her character Tess Harris.
Tess has been having an affair with married Paddy Kirk since autumn last year, causing several complications in both of their personal lives.
Speaking on Loose Women today (January 28), Stephenson said: "I don't think she is a maneater. I think when you are an actor, you have sympathy for the character you are playing, otherwise you wouldn't be able to do it.
"I think she is really unhappy. She is in a really unhappy marriage and the main crux of it is that she has never had children.
"The choices that she has made have been really questionable and not good for anybody involved."
Teasing how the rest of the plot will play out, Stephenson has confirmed that there will be no happy ending.
She said: "There is not going to be anybody who comes out of this unscathed. There are no winners. It's so good, all the twists and turns that are coming up. "

Even Loose Women and Nicola Stephenson laughed at everything on ITV. Everything so beyond any real-life joke really.
Here we have "professionals" Rhona and Paddy turning up at a swanky hotel dressed like tramps. Before this, Paddy openly snogs Tess at the bottom of the "grand staircase" (so Titanic! so glug! glug! glug!!). The obvious end can only be disaster with massive loss of life! So now we have frustrated Tess... So massive problems dead ahead with Iceberg Tess! Just why won't Ship Paddy turn? (Too slow and too small a rudder... haha!)

I am really happy to share my knowledge of Emmerdale spoilers here and my own interpretations too.

Soaps are about affairs falling in love falling out of love and then falling in love again. If a soap opera never had an affair it would not work. I just hope when the truth comes out that Paddy tells Rhona about her short commings as a wife. I cannot imagine a man would find Rhona interesting unless he had a high tolerance level to a nagging overbearing wife. Rhona is always such a bitch she is always bitching and fussing at Paddy. I do not think Rhona treats Paddy as an equal at all in their marriage she is very high maintenance which is a real turn off for a lot of straight men. Nobody wants to be married to a nagging bitch.

I just hope when the truth comes out that Paddy tells Rhona about her short commings as a wife. I cannot imagine a man would find Rhona interesting unless he had a high tolerance level to a nagging overbearing wife. Rhona is always such a bitch she is always bitching and fussing at Paddy. I do not think Rhona treats Paddy as an equal at all in their marriage she is very high maintenance which is a real turn off for a lot of straight men. Nobody wants to be married to a nagging bitch.

If they stopped using "affairs " as a storyline- a main source
of stories would dry up!
Soaps are about affairs falling in love falling out of love and then falling in love again. If a soap opera never had an affair it would not work. she is happy to work as hard as Paddy does, and then have a pint down the pub??
she looks after her son as much as Marlon does? doesn't go out anywhere swanky?

rhona already forgave paddy for cheating with chas, he don't deserve her and leo, they are happy and he still cheats

I was really hoping in my heart that I was wrong about Tess dying on 11 Feb. But all of the indicators were against this.
I did wonder if it would be suicide or a car accident when Tess was upset.
I really liked Tess. She clearly had an unhappy marriage and just wanted a better life.
Tess was a really lovely woman for me.
Forever in our hearts.

Emmerdale star Nicola Stephenson has spoken out following the shock death of Tess Harris, praising the "fantastic story" which marked the end for her character.
The actress's five-month stint in the Dales came to a very sudden conclusion on Thursday night (February 11), as Tess died after being knocked over by Kirin Kotecha in a drunken hit and run accident.
Tess's tragedy came just as she was considering spilling the beans to Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) about her affair with the vet's husband Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt), having been cruelly rejected by him one last time.
Asked whether she's sad to see Tess go, Stephenson replied: "Not at all! I've had an absolute ball doing Emmerdale, so on the one hand I am sad not to be working with Dom and Zoe anymore. But I'm always quite excited at the end of a job about what opportunities are coming next. I'm really looking forward to playing someone new.
"At the moment I am reading scripts and auditioning for different roles. I have theatre and TV work that I'm either considering or waiting to hear about.
"It's an exciting and nail-biting time for an actor when you're in between jobs. You always think, 'I'm never going to work again', but then something fantastic comes along. Or it has so far, touch wood!"
Tess's exit was kept top secret before transmission, but the fatal twist was filmed early last month and had been months in the planning.
On filming the dramatic road stunt, Stephenson continued: "It was easy for me. We had an amazing stunt woman who just blew everyone away with her skill and fearlessness. She was awesome and the stunt looked amazing.
"Thank God everything ran smoothly, although I did do rather a lot of lying on a dirty road in freezing January weather! But it was all made so worthwhile by the fantastic story we got to act."
While it may be the end for Tess, her affair with Paddy will still have far-reaching consequences when the penny finally drops for Rhona next week.
There's also much more to come from Tess's husband Pierce (Jonathan Wrather), who's just been introduced on screen for the first time.
Reflecting on her Emmerdale experience as a whole, Stephenson concluded: "I have loved it. Genuinely it has been a lovely experience to do such a meaty storyline with such fine, dedicated, generous actors who are now good chums.
"It's been an absolute joy to come in and get such a juicy storyline straight away. The writers have created a fantastic story with great twists and turns that have kept the audience hooked in all the way along. I've been really lucky.
"I think Tess really loved Paddy - although I think she chose the wrong person to fall in love with. I think her choices might have been smarter had she not been so unhappy - with her relationship, and the fact that she's never had children.
"But I think Paddy loves Rhona. I think he got himself into a really destructive situation. The illicit desire probably felt like love, and then the guilt of her dying probably makes him even more confused, but I think at the end of the day he loves Rhona."
