Fiz’s daughter Hope diagnosed with cancer.

Coronation Street’s Fiz Brown is going to be left devastated when her daughter Hope is diagnosed with cancer.
The five year old girl is taken to hospital where medics reveal she has neuroblastoma which is a highly aggressive cancer.
It will come as a bombshell for poor Fiz as she struggles to come to terms with the diagnosis and wishes she could have cancer instead of her daughter.
A soap source told the Mirror: “Producers have gone to great lengths to understand as much about this cancer as possible. “They want to portray accurately and sensitively what must be a very distressing time for parents and sufferers alike.
“These will be some of the most heart-wrenching scenes ever seen on the show.”
Corrie bosses have consulted the charity Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Alliance, which parents of children who have the cancer.

I hear you but then I look at the storylines as learning about things I probably would not otherwise, I am aware that we won´t see the real gruesome stuff of course, but sure helps to get an insight into what others go through in life, even if it is something I would prefer never having to learn about :(

Billy Platt I believe, Sarah and Todd's son. He was born prematurely and lived for a couple of days.

Tyrone and Fiz set off for the hospital with Hope and Ruby. After more tests, the nurse assures them that they'll have Hope's results within a couple of days.
At the hospital, the consultant breaks the news to Fiz and Tyrone that Hope has cancer. Reeling from the news, Fiz lashes out at Tyrone, suggesting he wouldn't be so calm if it were Ruby who was ill.
Upset, Roy confides in Cathy that Hope may have cancer. Cathy hides her holdall and making out she's not ready to return home, asks him if she can stay a while longer.

They have one of the strongest relationships on Coronation Street, but Tyrone Dobbs and Fiz Stape will struggle to stay united after receiving devastating news next week.

Recent episodes have seen the couple become worried over the health of Fiz's young daughter Hope, but scenes airing next week will see their worst fears confirmed as a doctor confirms that the 4-year-old has cancer.

While Tyrone (Alan Halsall) and Fiz need each other's support at this worrying time, the diagnosis severely tests their partnership as they both react so differently to the situation.

Jennie McAlpine, who plays Fiz, revealed: "Fiz doesn't want to tell anybody about Hope, as she just wants to keep it between them. She doesn't want to say it out loud, either - I think she feels as though that makes it more real.

"But then Tyrone tells everyone about Hope, so immediately Fiz is really upset by that. How it happens is that Fiz has called in sick when actually she's taking care of Hope, so the first time she bumps into Aidan, he questions her on why she isn't at home in bed if she's supposed to be sick."

She continued: "This is in the middle of the street and so Tyrone comes to Fiz's defence and tells Aidan not to have a go at Fiz - and ends up saying that their daughter has cancer. Fiz is really upset that this now means everyone on the Street knows when she wanted to keep it in the family.

"Then on another occasion, Fiz through frustration asks Tyrone why he's upset since Hope is her daughter, not his. She doesn't even mean what she says. It's a defence mechanism, but obviously she can't swallow what she has said and it's out there in the open. It becomes the elephant in the room and they're both upset by it.

"Fiz doesn't think that Tyrone doesn't care as much for Hope compared to Ruby at all. She doesn't for one second believe that to be true. The 4 of them are such a tight unit. Fiz also knows how much she cares about Ruby, so she knows it's the same for Tyrone and Hope. It was just something she said through feeling so worried. Tyrone gets really upset by it."

Pressure will also mount for Tyrone as he has to cope with staying strong for the sake of the family, leaving him reluctant to show his true emotions.

McAlpine added: "I don't think Tyrone copes very well at all. He's trying to be strong for Fiz, but she's completely consumed by it so she doesn't ask Tyrone how he's feeling about it. Nobody really asks Tyrone how he feels and if he needs support, as he's trying to be strong and hold the family together.

"He's trying to be the breadwinner as well, because Fiz is less and less able to go to work as she has to take Hope to hospital for tests and appointments. Tyrone is also under more pressure at work but he has to get through it. Then of course Tyrone has to come home from work and has no time to be tired as he knows he has to support Fiz and the girls."

Coronation Street has been accused of "trivialising" cancer with a "soft" storyline involving a child.

In the ITV soap, Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) and Tyrone's (Alan Halsall) 5-year-old daughter Hope has been diagnosed with neuroblastomaneuroblastoma, a form of the disease which affects 100 children every year and has a 67% survival rate.

Last Friday, the parents were told Hope's cancer had been cured and she was entering remission after just a couple of months of treatment.

However, now real-life parents have come forward in anger at the apparent trivialising of the condition.

Victoria Young and husband Rob, whose 3 year-old daughter Ruby has the same condition, have posted on their Facebook page fundraising for her, saying: "The whole thing has been a farce.

"Not only am I disappointed in this storyline I am disgusted and offended they have made it look like a walk in the park."

But a Coronation Street spokesman defended the soap, stating: "We have not at any stage said Hope is cured at all. This is an ongoing story which has been researched thoroughly."

I accept we do not know the ending of this
story yet- but I can understand the real -life
parents anger!
Soaps in general do make live threatening
illnesses of all kinds- seem easier than they
are.Probably becacuse the viewers couldn't
take the unvarnished truth.
Only the people with a real life loved one
-in that position can and do do that!

I think the storyline has showed the limitations of Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) and Tyrone's (Alan Halsall) acting skills.

Absolutely. Also, the writing for the storyline has been poor. It's been very simplistic and strangely emotionless. It appears to have been just a plot device to get Fiz and Tyrone into debt!

I am glad there was a quick end to the storyline. I know it's upset some people but it was painful watching the storyline.....so bad acting I mean I did not feel sad for hope at any time or shed a tear for the parents that's how bad the acting was.

I think she's in remission but they'll be keeping an eye on her for signs of the cancer returning.

Coronation Street will be taking a different direction for Hope Stape in the future, with the soap's bosses deciding to swap the storylines that have focused on her being violent and manipulative for something a bit lighter.

Appearing on Loose Women earlier this week, executive producer Iain MacLeod said: "She's certainly not going to continue going down such a troubled path, in the short to medium to long-term. We thought: 'Actually, we've done some very dark and twisted things with that character, and okay that'll still be part of her, but for the next 12 months we're going to do normal pre-teen stuff.

"We're going to be building a friendship with her and Sam [Blakeman], that will verge on a very innocent pre-teen romance a little bit and they try to navigate those waters.

"Yes okay, it will always have a Hope twist on it because she's maybe wired a bit differently than most kids her age. She won't necessarily get help, but we'll see a more down-to-earth grounded side of her."

He explained that part of the reason for making this decision was that he didn't want to risk Hope actress Isabella Flanagan burning out, as he has plans for her to remain on the show for years and have her and Sam resemble a certain Byker Grove duo whose actors turned into popstars and TV presenters.

"I just think there's a risk with any character that's that brilliant ? and Isabella [Flangan] is such a good actress as well ? that you burn them out by having them doing too much big crazy stuff in a run. If we're lucky, God willing, we'll have her for years and years..." he continued.

"Hope and Sam, we're taking as our benchmark 'PJ and Duncan'. What if we can take these kids that are, like, 10 and grow them for a decade into this incredibly rich friendship?

"That's what we're hoping to do ? obviously both of those actors are so talented that they might very well be off to Hollywood by the time they're 14. But if we can keep them, we're trying to PJ and Duncan them up."
