Kathy briefly reappeared on screen in EastEnders' 30th anniversary week in February, leaving shocked viewers with countless questions about how and why she was back following her off-screen 'death' in 2006.
Since then, Kathy has met up with her ex Phil Mitchell in a café, seeking cash from him and admitting that Gavin had no idea what she was up to.
Speaking of his new role, Nicholas commented: "I am delighted to be joining the wonderful cast of EastEnders for what is going to be an exciting time ahead. I can't wait to get started and seeing what's in store for my character."
EastEnders' executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins added: "We are all thrilled that Paul has agreed to join our cast to play Gavin. So many British television viewers have grown up with Paul Nicholas so it's brilliant to have him back on our screens, playing a major part in Kathy's explosive return to the Square, while also holding the key to many more of the Square's secrets."
A show statement also teased: "Kathy will be back in Albert Square this autumn, but just what exactly are she and old flame Phil hiding? Where have Kathy and Gavin been? And why is Gavin being kept in the dark?"
Treadwell-Collins shared a script snippet featuring Gavin on his Twitter page yesterday (June 17), which hinted that the character will be a formidable force.
Nicholas has enjoyed a number of stage and screen projects during his career, but is best known for his Just Good Friends role as Vincent Pinner.
He sure has changed over the years but looking good :)
so both Gavin and Kathy's deaths in the 'car crash' were faked??!!
leaving Ben devastated thinking he was alone??
I dont get twhere this is going at all????

so that when it is "explained" to us-
we give up all reason and accept the

I just cant think of a situation where Kathy would've given up Ben, not only that but allowed him and Ian to believe her dead??!

I agree -in the real world.
The only possibility I can think of-
Is she and or Gavin got involved
with gangter/ underworld types.
Something went wrong and the
gangsters needed them to disappear
They were told if they did not comply
Ian and or Ben would be killed.
As Kathy knows ( was married to) Phil
The Terrifying - I would have thought
that might have deterred them - but
obviously not!!

I think all soaps are having some unbelievable storylines at the moment ...but I suppose they are fiction and only based on reality

The only explanation that'll be remotely believable is that Kathy's fake death was done in terror or against her will. Maybe to escape gangsters, as MaidMarian says, or perhaps she was kidnapped and locked away somewhere with no access to the outside world? Last time we saw her, from what I can remember she was scared of Gavin finding out where she was, so he's probably a bad 'un that was at the root of it in some way.

Maybe Gavin had her declared insane and locked up in an asylum???

Possibly so- just been going through some
soap items on internet and there is a pic
of G Taylforth and underneath the legend
Kathys return is 'mad' but its believable!!
Hope viewers agree. Interested to see

There's also lots of speculation that Gavin is Sharon's biological father (her birth mother told her that he was called Gavin too). I think it's too much of a coincidence but it seems anything goes in EE nowadays so I wouldn't discount it altogether. :p
I'm still hoping Sharon and Ian are somehow related after the DNA test they took was botched.

It's speculation at the monent as far as I know but I think there have been a few hints that Phil knows who Sharon's birth father is and doesn't want her to find out. I can't think who else it would be in that case. Phil wouldn't want Sharon to know that he's been hiding/having secret meetings with Kathy after all.

Is there any reason you feel the big house he took Sharon to was another misdirection by Phil? I thought it could be her father's real house as Phil seemed genuine to me at that time (though that probably signifies nothing lol).

I've stopped watching and haven't seen this episode, but I was getting hints beforehand (Phil giving a picture of Sharon to a 'private investigator.' Surely if he wasn't planning on faking something, it'd be her birth certificate and whatever information she had regarding her adoption,) plus I'm sure there was a particularly shifty look from Phil at one time when Sharon mentioned her father.
he also rumoured to be connected to vincent, his dad too
EastEnders boss Dominic Treadwell-Collins has revealed more about Kathy Beale's upcoming return, teasing that her husband Gavin will be one of the biggest villains in the show's history.
It was recently announced that Just Good Friends star Paul Nicholas had been cast in the role of Gavin Sullivan, who will have a major role in Kathy's return storyline later this year.
Speaking at an EastEnders press event, Treadwell-Collins said: "We are gearing up to the big return of Kathy. Paul Nicholas has already started filming and we had a big meeting with him today.
"If everything works out the way I hope and I am sure it will, Gavin is going to be an EastEnders villain like no other.
"He is going to be modern, complex and he will have a little foot in the past and a foot in the present. You will learn more about him later."
Kathy (Gillian Taylforth) briefly reappeared on screen in EastEnders' 30th anniversary week in February, shocking viewers who had believed she was dead following an off-screen car crash in 2006.
Kathy has since met up with her ex Phil Mitchell in a café, seeking cash from him and admitting that Gavin had no idea what she was up to.
Nicholas and Taylforth were spotted filming on location at King's Cross station last weekend. Kathy's EastEnders return will air later this summer.

Well spotted Kim! I think it was said Vincent would be a "new kind of villain", so yes, nearly word for word. :wall:
Still, I'm looking forward to Kathy and Gavin moving to the square. I can't see me watching much EE until they do.
I'm hoping Vincent will rival Archie for delicious evilness and I've come around to the view that he's almost certainly Sharon's dad. The huge house fits, and the blonde hair too.

with something /someone to liven things up
after all the turgid repititions we are getting.
I was a bit surprised that Paul Nicholas was
being cast as a "villain" as thats quite different
from roles Ive seen him in previously.
Doesnt mean he wont be good tho!
I did have a quick skim through his
quite long & detailed theatrical &
TV history. One thing I noted was he
has played a transsexual previously !!

That's very interesting, and would fit in with my earlier theory that Sharon's father would be transgender.
However, I do hope DTC will keep his word and cast a real life transgendered person in the role.

Gavin Sullivan is being billed as the most dangerous villain in the show's history, and EastEnders star Paul Nicholas has admitted he felt slightly daunted by the role.
The Just Good Friends actor made his first appearance on the soap last month, appearing as Kathy Beale's controlling husband Gavin, who was the mastermind behind her faking her death in 2006.
Dominic Treadwell-Collins has revealed that Gavin will be so dangerous he will make Archie Mitchell look like a Care Bear, and viewers will get an insight into just how dark the character really is over the next few weeks.
Speaking about the role at an EastEnders press event, Nicholas said: "It has been great for me coming into a show like this, which is brilliantly produced and very well acted.
"It can be quite daunting for someone like me who hasn't done this kind of thing before, but what was great was meeting Dominic, who as you can tell has a fantastic enthusiasm for the show, and indeed Alex [Lamb, story producer] and his writers."
"When I came into the show, I met all the writers and they explained who the character was and gave me a really good insight into where they wanted it to go. That is very, very unusual in this business - you don't usually get that kind of attention. It just shows the quality and care they put into the show."
Nicholas also admitted that he was enjoying the versatility of working in a soap, admitting that he is constantly left guessing as to what Gavin will do next.
"For me it is a great thrill and it is a nice thing to do," he explained. "I have done a lot of theatre and after a while, it does become very repetitive because you are doing the same show every night. But the great thing about EastEnders is that you don't know what is coming next.
"That keeps all the actors on their toes, it makes it interesting and keeps the standards very high. I am very pleased to be a part of it. It is nice to be involved in something so successful and that people actually watch."

Was thinking maybe he is Ronnie's dad :p did he know Archie?
I think that's a very good idea. I joked on another thread that he could be Ian's biological father, so we could end up with a full set of three secret children if that happened. http://www.picgifs.com/smileys/smileys-and-emoticons/happy/smileys-happy-514478.gif (http://www.picgifs.com/smileys/)
Ronnie not being Archie's would actually make a lot of sense. As we know, Roxy was his little angel but he treated Ronnie (and later Danielle) appallingly. Them not being related could explain his resentment (and his rape of Ronnie might be a little easier to for her to bear if she knew it wasn't incest). The only thing that doesn't fit is why he wouldn't tell her the truth?

I did think when I read Tammys post at least
that cancels the incest!?
But still leaves the rape/paedophilia to be
borne.
I may have remembered wrong but I thought
the rape(s) occurred on various occasions-
not just once- when the mother could be
expected to be out!!
Ive never really understood Ronnie- but its
difficult when someone has such a terrible
childhood. Comments have been made about her
desperation for children then apparently not
interested.in them when they arrive.
I wonder if she likes the idea but has to
control the emotions that having your
own child releases in.most women.
If youve had the control of your own
life taken away from.you when you
are at vulnerable age - for a long period
of time - you may try to regain it later-but
can you?? Also does it affect your ability
to take responsiblity for others.
In a strange way it might also explain
why she took Kats baby- though Kat didnt
deserve it- to exert some control over someone
elses life- as she does in Roxys and as happened
to herself!

Gavin arrives with back-up
Tonight's episode sees Phil (Steve McFadden) struggle with more problems in his marriage to Sharon, which has been on rocky ground for a while.
He's also stunned to find his son Ben in a compromising position with Paul Coker at the car lot as the pair continue their secret affair.
Already in a foul mood after the day's events, Phil heads over to the garage but gets a nasty surprise when Gavin arrives with back-up.
It seems that Gavin wants revenge after Phil helped Kathy with her plan to return to Walford, but exactly what does he have planned?

Ex-EastEnders scriptwriter Sarah Phelps revealed her anger when one of her former lines was reused on the show.
Fans of the BBC One soap saw Gavin Sullivan, played by Paul Nicholas, say the words “Hello princess” to his biological daughter Sharon Mitchell (Letitia Dean), after revealing he is her real dad on the October 30 episode.
Phelps, who wrote the line for Dirty Den’s return in 2003, said she felt “bilious” at the way it was used.
She also dubbed the episode’s writer as “not original” in a series of posts on Twitter.
Recycling a line is known as retroactive continuity, or retcon for short, and refers to the alteration of previously established facts in the continuity of a fictional work.
Phelps also previously wrote in a tweet, which she later deleted: “Never ever piss on the memory of Den and Angie. Never. I wrote that *******ing line. That was Den. Not some turd in a syrup.”
But she refused to put any blame on actor Paul, saying: “He’s ace.”
Phelps, who first joined EastEnders in 2002 and has written more than 50 episodes of the soap, returned to the show for a one-off episode earlier this year as Sharon continued her desperate search for answers over her biological father.
Her other works include the TV adaptation of JK Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy, BBC period drama Great Expectations and BBC drama The Crimson Field.

Perhaps hoping for a "repeat " fee?
