"Being asked to appear in Coronation Street was a very special moment for me," McGuinness said.
"I remember Peter [Kay] telling me how much he enjoyed his guest spot on the show, and I can't wait to get started.
"[It's] an iconic and much-loved show, not just in the UK but around the world. The character I'll be playing is very funny, and I'm sure the Corrie fans will love him."
Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn added: "It's an absolute delight to be working with Paddy who is a talented actor with a flair for comedy that will ensure he fits right in with the Corrie cast."
Dougie appears in six episodes, and will be putting Kirk, Beth, Craig, Chesney, Sinead, Tyrone and Fiz through their paces.
He will be on holiday with teenage daughter Caitlin, who becomes friends with Craig Tinker.
Filming begins on location next month and the episodes will be broadcast in August.

The 41-year-old TV personality has bagged a guest role on Britain's longest-running soap, playing the part of wilderness survival enthusiast Dougie Ryan.
His park keeper character will meet the Tinkers and Dobbs families on a camping trip, and the comedian was spotted in a Cheshire forest with fellow castmates.
Playing a spot of swing ball, Paddy was seen with Colson Smith, who portrays Craig Tinker, Sam Aston, best known for his role as Chesney Brown, and Andy Whyment, who stars as Kirk Sutherland.
The Bolton-born presenter, who will appear in six episodes, was dressed the part in cargo trousers paired with a dark blue polo top, sturdy walking boots and a khaki vest loaded up with his essential camping equipment such as ropes and rings.

During his time on the soap, Dougie is set to put Craig, Chesney and Kirk along with Beth Tinker (Lisa George), Sinead Tinker (Katie McGlynn), Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) and Fiz Brown (Jennie McAlpine) through their paces with hilarious consequences.
The Bear Grylls-style character will be on holiday with his teenage daughter Caitlin Ryan who strikes up an unlikely friendship with loveable Craig, while Dougie shames the boys with his expertise in all things outdoors.
Former Phoenix Nights co-star Peter Kay also previously appeared on the soap back in 2004 and Paddy admits that he's wanted to follow in his footsteps ever since.

Paddy McGuinness announces he is set to reprise survival enthusiast Dougie Ryan in Coronation Street
Paddy McGuinness is returning to Coronation Street .
The Take Me Out presenter took to his Twitter account this afternoon, announcing that he will be reprising survival enthusiast Dougie Ryan.
Much to the delight of fans, he posted a picture of himself suited and booted in front of cobbles landmark Roy's Rolls.
He then captioned the image: "Dougy's back...for a butty."
The snap was also published on the official Coronation Street Twitter account, putting a huge smile on fans' faces.
Commenting on the exciting announcement, one follower tweeted: "@PaddyMcGuinness yesssssss this must mean your back on @ itvcorrie."
Shortly afterwards, another posted: "@ PaddyMcGuinness looking very smart Mr Mc! Xktx."
Corrie viewers last saw Dougie on screen back in August when he crossed paths with the Tinker and Dobbs families during a camping holiday.
At one point, his character was seen grossly exaggerating a moment he'd previously shared with a deer. Yes. A deer.
While cobbles favourite Tyrone Dobbs wasn't overly impressed with the newbie, Twitter on the other hand, was full of praise for the character.
Paddy appeared in six episodes of Corrie last year
Following his debut, last summer, Paddy went on to feature in a further five episodes.
Now, it looks like he's set to finally return.
Good news :)
Paddy McGuinness’s latest tweets may have suggested a return to Coronation Street for the funny man – but not so, according to reps for the ITV soap.
‘He is not returning,’ a rep for the show succinctly told Metro.co.uk.
The actor and TV presenter joined the soap for a few episodes in 2015 as Dougie Ryan, a wilderness explorer whose daughter Caitlin Ryan was introduced as love interest for Craig Tinker.
And although he went down a storm with fans it appears that Paddy was sadly just on the set this week as he was filming for another ITV show and decided to pop back in ‘for a butty’ and ‘a pint’.

It will be sad news for fans of the show and the comedian, as viewers were gobsmacked by how good Paddy was as Dougie.
He taught Fiz, Tyrone, Sinead, Chesney, Kirk, Beth, Craig and co how to survive whilst camping during a double-bill episode, with one viewer calling on him to do more acting.
‘Paddy McGuinness is actually funnier as an actor than he is at stand up, should do it more often,’ wrote Aidan O’Brien.
Still, some were just waiting for his classic Take Me Out punchline…
'was waiting for Paddy McGuinness to say 'let the sausage see the pan!' on @itvcorrie :D
