Emmerdale fans will be introduced to Lachlan White's father Donny next month.

Actor Alan Convy has been cast in the role of Donny, who will be appearing in the ITV soap for a guest stint.

Donny's arrival in the village will come as Lachlan's sexual assault storyline continues to play out on screen.

Lachlan (Thomas Atkinson) left Alicia Metcalfe traumatised by assaulting her last month and then spent weeks lying about what had really happened between them.

More recently, the teenager has been forced to face the music after his mother Chrissie uncovered his guilt and ordered him to confess to the police.

With the legal process set to continue in the coming weeks, viewers will have to wait and see how Donny's appearance affects the White family.

Chrissie has tried to keep Donny well away from the Lachlan situation thus far, so the arrival of her dodgy ex is bound to stir things up even further for the troubled mum.

Lachlan White's father Donny has something to hide when he arrives in Emmerdale for the first time next week.

Actor Alan Convy has been cast in the role of Donny, who will be joining the ITV soap for a guest stint as part of Lachlan's sexual assault storyline.

Lachlan's mother Chrissie (Louise Marwood) has been determined to keep Donny well away from the controversy surrounding their son, but she finally cracks and makes contact with him next week after realising that she cannot cope with the situation alone.

Shocked that Lachlan still isn't showing any remorse for his assault on Alicia Metcalfe, a concerned Chrissie asks Donny to try talking some sense into him.

Chrissie is relieved when Donny shares her own attitudes towards the situation and promises to help, but her jealous husband Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) isn't happy to see them getting along so well.

Donny has some success when he uses underhanded methods to convince Lachlan to go for counselling, but viewers soon learn that he is hiding a secret of his own when he starts receiving unwanted calls and texts from a mystery contact.

A rattled Donny tells the person in question that he needs more time, but he later gets a warning when he is bundled into the back of a car and beaten up.

Chrissie is stunned when Donny returns looking bruised and bloodied, but he allows her to believe that Lachlan's recent crime was the reason he was targeted. What exactly is Donny hiding?

Emmerdale has aired a surprise return for Lachlan White's father Donny Cairn.

Alan Convy has reprised his role as Donny for a brief storyline, which saw him target The Woolpack and stab Vanessa Woodfield in the first of Thursday night's episodes (January 10).

Show bosses announced Vanessa's stabbing storyline late last month, but kept fans guessing over who'd be responsible for the horrific crime.

We now know that Donny is the mystery individual who's been targeting the Dingle family recently – acting on Lachlan's behalf by sending sinister messages to Belle and even killing the clan's pig Gloria.

In Emmerdale's latest episode, Donny upped the ante by pouring petrol around The Woolpack while Belle and her loved ones were all inside.

When Vanessa spotted him and attempted to intervene, Donny stabbed her with a broken bottle, went ahead with starting the fire and drove off in her car – unaware that her young son Johnny was in the back.

Donny previously appeared in Emmerdale for a short stint in April 2015.

Lachlan's mum Chrissie got in touch with Donny as she wanted him to be more involved in their son's life after he sexually assaulted Alicia Metcalfe.

Although Donny showed early signs of being a positive influence on Lachlan, it later transpired that he'd been advising the twisted teenager to simply tell his mum what she wanted to hear.

Donny also tried to extort money from Chrissie as he owed a debt to dangerous criminals. Chrissie parted with the cash, but later hired Ross Barton to help her steal it back – leaving him empty-handed and vulnerable to reprisals from his dodgy associates.

Despite his long absence, it's now clear that Donny is back in touch with his son and carrying out sinister orders on his behalf. But could this troubling situation cost Vanessa her life?
