Coronation Street favourite Roy Cropper is to get a new friend played by renowned actress Melanie Hill.
Melanie has been cast as Cathy Matthews, the owner of the allotment next to Roy and Sharif’s plot.
Roy and Cathy strike up a friendship through their love of the allotment and he soon discovers she is getting over the death of her husband.
Is this destined to be Roy’s first chance of romance following the death of his beloved Hayley?
Melanie is best known for her roles in Playing the Field, Waterloo Road and the sitcom Bread, more recently she appeared in Cilla playing the scouse singer’s mum ‘Big Cilla’.
Producer Stuart Blackburn said:
"Recently widowed, Cathy is an engaging yet sometimes chaotic woman. Though her indecision can drive her friends mad, behind the vulnerable front is a woman who truly does have a heart of gold."
“Gentle, kind and intelligent she has more to offer than she knows and in Roy she'll find a friend who will ultimately bring out the best in her. ”

"We are delighted that Melanie Hill has agreed to join us and take on the role. Familiar I'm sure to our audience, Melanie is an incredible actress who I know will soon propel Cathy to the heart of Coronation Street.”
Melanie Hill said:
"I'm chuffed to bits to be joining the cast of my favourite soap. I and my family grew up watching it and to actually be working on it is a dream come true. "

I liked her in Waterloo Road, she should be a good addition for Corrie.
I liked her in WR too and yes, I think she will be a good companion for Roy :)

She was great as Aveline Boswell too in Bread and in Playing The Field, an actress very capable of both drama and comedy

When Roy starts working on an allotment with Sharif Nazir, he quickly gets to know Cathy as she owns the adjacent plot.
As they start to confide in each other, Cathy reveals that she is getting over the death of her husband. Roy can easily relate to her experiences, having lost his beloved wife Hayley at the beginning of last year.
Speaking of her new role, Hill commented: "I'm chuffed to bits to be joining the cast of my favourite soap. I and my family grew up watching it and to actually be working on it is a dream come true."

As the storyline develops, viewers will have to wait and see whether meeting Cathy could be Roy's first chance of romance since Hayley's death.
Hill has appeared in a number of popular TV shows over the years, including Waterloo Road as Maggie Budgen. She has also starred in Bread, Playing the Field and Cilla among others.
Coronation Street will air Cathy's first scenes in late April.
Melanie is great... brilliant casting.
Loved her as Rita in Playing the Field and she was good as was it Marie in the Bill, she was married to Jim Carver?
And my personal favourite character of hers was Sandra in Brassed Off....one of my all time favourite films! You wouldnt mess with her. Cant wait to see her scenes in Corrie she is a brilliant actress if given the right stuff
Brassed Off is one of my all time favourite films too ... and she was brilliant in that ..as she has been in everything I have seen her in :D
hope she puts anna and mammy kazir in their place
Good news for Corrie (and Roy).

When they start to confide in each other, Cathy tells Roy that she is getting over the death of her husband and the pair find themselves bonding over their grief.
Here, Melanie Hill about her new role and hints that Cathy is harbouring a big secret.
Kathy has been brought in as a romantic interest for Roy. What can you tell us about that?
"Basically they meet on the allotment that Roy has got and Cathy's husband, who has just passed away, had the allotment next to it. Cathy is being introduced as a friend for Roy and it is all going to be very gently done because obviously Hayley was such a popular character and so is Roy. At this stage, they are just going to have Cathy come in gradually as a friend for him.
"The common ground that they have got is that they have both lost their partners and they strike up this friendship because they are both quite lonely. They end up confiding in each other and talk about things that Roy wouldn't normally talk about to with anyone else on the street. They just form a friendship."
How would you describe Cathy as a character?
"She is basically just consumed with the loss of her husband. It has affected her in such a way that she is now very anxious and very nervous. He took care of everything in their lives like looking after the bills and obviously the allotment. She has never had to take care of anything before and now she is on her own so she is struggling with that massively. She talks for England but she is very nervous. She trusts Roy because she doesn't have many friends. Also, there is more to her than meets the eye. In future episodes we find out that she is carrying this big secret which she doesn't want Roy to find out so that is going to be very interesting, but that is further down the line."
What is her first meeting like with Roy?
"It is at the allotment and it is all very gradual. At first, she is actually a bit annoyed with him when they meet. They are throwing rubbish into her allotment so it starts off on a bad foot. But they soon get talking and they discuss their partners passing away."

Does Cathy have children?
"We are not really bringing that into it yet. We are leaving it open at the minute. She is basically just trying to survive after the death of her husband."
Is it quite daunting knowing that Roy was previously part of such a popular double act with Hayley?
"It is, very. Obviously I would never try and replace Hayley or come anywhere near that. At the moment, I am just working with him as a friend. But who knows what will happen in the future?"
Do you think viewers will warm to Cathy? Or will they resent her because of her closeness with Roy?
"I think they might have a problem with it because obviously this comes back to Hayley being such a massive character. I think the people on the Street are going to have a problem with it as well because obviously they are protecting Roy."
Do you think Cathy will be a conflict character or a comedy character?
"I think a bit of both to be honest - that is what I would like to think. She is quite funny in her own way. She makes big faux pas because she is nervous and she says the wrong thing. She is quite ditzy, but there will be conflict coming into the Street, obviously. She is an outsider coming into the heart of it. I am looking forward to seeing what comes. That is why I like the fact you don't know what is going to happen. You are in this show playing the same character, but you still don't know what is round the corner. You are waiting for the scripts with baited breath."
Roy is very unique personality, so does Cathy understand him?
"I don't know if she understands him, but she has bonded with him because he is a gentle soul. She feels safe with him. I don't know about understanding him, but she does get very close to him very quickly because they are both simple people and they start talking quite deeply early on."
Do you think they would be so close if it wasn't for the grief they both share?
"No, they wouldn't. I think at the time, the universe has aligned and they met and formed this friendship. If they had their partners here, they probably wouldn't. Her husband passed away from cancer as well."
Did you have to screen test with David before getting the role? And would you say you had instant chemistry?
"I didn't know David before but I screen tested with him. I would like to think we did have chemistry. He is so lovely and put me at my ease. That was very helpful."
How long is your initial stay for?
"I have signed for a year."
Are they any other characters in on the show that you would love to have some scenes with?
"I am looking forward to working with Jennie McAlpine, who plays Fiz. She is another favourite of mine and I think there is a lot of potential aggro there as Fiz is going to protect Roy."
Have you ever auditioned for a role in Coronation Street before?
"No I haven't - this is the first time. It is the perfect time for me as I am happy to be in something long running and long may it last. I did Waterloo Road for three and a half years and I like working like that. Very often in this business, you are working for three months and then you move on and you have to make new friends. It is daunting as you get older to be thrown into a situation with all new people. I find it a bit hard so I liked being with the Waterloo Road folks and staying with them everyday. I liked that comfort although I know a lot of actors don't. It appeals to me."
What was it like seeing the Street for the first time?
"It was quite emotional. I really felt like it was where I was meant to be and that sounds quite silly, but I really feel so happy about where I am. I was terrified when I went into Roy's Rolls though - that was really scary. The screen test was also really nerve-wracking because they were filming when I went in. I expected it to be one camera and it wasn't like that. In the scene, I had to open an umbrella so to be on the safe side, I bought an umbrella and I was rehearsing with it. But as I went into the studio, they said "we've got all that" so I didn't need it. They gave me an umbrella that broke during my first take I did, so imagine my nerves. I tried to improvise my hardest but I failed miserably. I had to apologise. I was convinced I had blown it."
You knew Les Dennis before you started, so was this reassuring when you started?
"Yes I know him through mutual friends near where we live so it has been really really good to know him. It is nice to know a friendly face. He has been really helpful and shown me the ropes. David has also been really helpful because a lot of my stuff is with him. Also, Katie McGlynn was in Waterloo Road so it was nice to see her. I spent the day doing scenes with her a couple of days ago so that was lovely."
How similar is Coronation Street to other shows you have done?
"Well I was only a semi regular on Emmerdale and The Bill, so it wasn't the same as Corrie. Once you are regular, you are part of that gang and the team and I never felt as part of it there as I do on this."
With Waterloo Road finishing, do you think it is a shame that there are fewer opportunities for writers and actors in continuing dramas?
"Yes, I was gutted when The Bill went as it had won loads of awards and then they canned it. There is less opportunity for people my age as the average age in these things tends to be quite young. That is why Corrie is good as it keeps the older actors and they are the interesting ones to me anyway. People identify with those characters."
Do you miss Waterloo Road?
"I miss the people, yes. We formed a really tight friendship. When Heather Peace left, there were five of us girls who were so close and we still keep in touch. When you have been on something for three years, you do form really strong bonds. So, I miss them. We do keep in touch but it isn't the same as when you see people everyday because everyone is so busy. That is why I like the idea of staying in one thing because I don't like just meeting people for three months and then saying goodbye. It can be hard."
Coronation Street will air Cathy's first scenes on Monday April 20 on ITV.

When Roy and Carla both decide to pay a visit to Cathy's house in an upcoming episode, she becomes visibly distressed by their arrival.
Rather than letting the well-meaning pair inside, Cathy causes a scene by angrily shouting at them through her window and ordering them to leave.

Cathy shouts at Roy and Carla
While the reasons for Cathy's unwelcoming attitude won't be revealed until nearer the time, viewers know that she has faced a tough few months due to her husband passing away following a battle with cancer.
Cathy recently confided in Roy about her sad loss as they spent time together at the local allotments, paving the way for a firm friendship and possible relationship between them.

Speaking about Cathy's storyline, Hill recently commented: "She is basically just consumed with the loss of her husband. It has affected her in such a way that she is now very anxious and very nervous. He took care of everything in their lives, like looking after the bills and obviously the allotment. She has never had to take care of anything before and now she is on her own so she is struggling with that massively.

Drama hits Coronation Street as Roy Cropper's new companion Cathy Matthews runs away from him
While it seemed that Roy Cropper (David Neilson) was finally on the road to romantic happiness once again, following the death of his wife Hayley, things may be hitting some early speed bumps.
In newly unveiled snapshots from Coronation Street's Manchester set, Roy's new companion, Cathy Matthews (Melanie Hill), is seen running away from them during a conversation.
Accompanied by Fiz Brown (Jennie McAlpine), Roy is left confused as Cathy hides in the bushes until he and Fiz have left.
Despite only recently entering the lives of Weatherfield's residents, Cathy has already become embroiled in quite a bit of drama.
In recently-shot scenes, she was seen furiously shouting at Roy and Carla Connor (Alison King) through a window in her home as they paid her a visit.
Her erratic behaviour has had viewers scratching their heads in search of an explanation, although it is already known that her husband recently died after a battle with cancer.
Cathy appeared to have found a confidant in Roy when she spoke with him about her loss.
Their time together on the allotments even led viewers to speculate that a budding romance might be on the cards.
In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Melanie Hill spoke about her character Cathy's troubles.
The actress explained: 'She is basically just consumed with the loss of her husband. It has affected her in such a way that she is now very anxious and very nervous.'
She added of Cathy: 'She talks for England but she is very nervous. She trusts Roy because she doesn't have many friends. Also, there is more to her than meets the eye.
'In future episodes we find out that she is carrying this big secret which she doesn't want Roy to find out, so that is going to be very interesting but that is further down the line.'

That was suggested early on when story was
first mooted and would be a dark secret and
make a link.to Roy.
I did also wonder about the money aspect and
thought she might have a problem with dyslexia
and so cant read the bills etc.
( which is an important issue) but theyve already
bodged that one with Tim.
So then I thought her husband has probably
been ill for some time and they were probably on
benefits and is she concealing his death to
continue receiving them. You do read of
such cases which have gone on for years.
She doesnt seem to have a job and most
employers insist on paying wages into
bank account now. I presume character
in her 50s- I suppose its still possible that
they may be some who leave all money
matters to husband-but much less likely than
in previous generations . How did she pay for
funeral -cost many thousands now?
Perhaps not had one- but that would be too
dark for Corrie surely !!
I dont remember any mention of her having
any children to help her

Interesting theory, I like it!
its probably more likely that she has let the house go and has'nt paid the bills etc. i remember when my Dad died everything my mum received stopped and if she did not have grown up kids she would not have had money to get a pint of milk!

Thats the most likely reason -as its Corrie-
and pendantic Roy would be good at dealing
with officialdom.! on her behalf.
Your mum was fortunate to have you and your
siblings to help. Most people have someone.
But so far it doesnt seem from what we know
that this lady has.
Bills arent really a "dark" secret- tho distressing
and stressful.
The secret may be something no one has
thought of yet!
If she didnt inform authorities about husbands
death- money wouldnt stop until a periodic
check revealed the truth or she may have
managed to continue deception.
When such cases are in the news -it is as
often panic as much as dishonesty that
causes the initial deception.
We will find out the dark secret in due course.
Its interesting now and again to have a story
line thats not predictable but does happen in
real life.!

Yes-Im.sure thats a possibilty. Grief affects
people differently and I think that one of the
main points they are making with this story
is - she has lost her husband and there are
other issues( whatever they turn out to be)
and she has no one to turn to and no support
Which is why Roy becomes involved.??

Not that I remember from soaps I watch.
There are cases in news and papers tho.
There was one in national news last year
where a couple claimed her fathers pension for
many years after having murdered both
father & mother . Only when fathers name
came up on a government ?? computer as
being due to have 100th birthday were checks
made and a relative had become suspicious
also.
And a woman who looked after her
mother kept claiming pension after
she died because she relied on the
money!! That came to light thru
routine checks.
I think Ive got general details above
correct- not sure of finer points!
There are sometimes other "smaller"
cases done for partly understandable
reasons -as well.

if she had debts the allotment site would be taken and if she killed and secretly buried her husband why say he is dead from cancer
Perhaps she had some money and now it
has run out or paid in advance for a period.
The little we know is what she has told
Roy . We dont know what she has told
neighbours etc or when other allotment
holders last saw him.
She may not have killed him -he might
have died naturally ( and be still in
the house/garden) and she has panicked
over money.
Or she may have mercy - killed
him (because he asked and was in severe pain)
and frightened to admit because of police
etc action.
Corrie issued publicity over "dark secret"!!!
It may just be usual over-hyping in search
of ratings or may not have fully decided
on develpment of story .A lot of soap stories
dont bear close examination.
People do tell lies thst dont mske sense
when they are in a panic and there may
grief here also - which can cause irrational
behaviour.
After the speculation and the full story
is known - it may seem far-fetched or
a damp squip!!
At least she has Roy on her side-we've
been told!

Roy Cropper is heading back to Blackpool for more emotional scenes.
The popular café owner will visit the seaside resort with his new friend and possible love interest Cathy Matthews in an upcoming episode
David Neilson and Melanie Hill, who play Roy and Cathy, were spotted filming the scenes on location today (July 14).
The pair's trip will initially go well, but Cathy inadvertently says the wrong thing when she suggests going for a paddle in the sea.
Memories of Roy's late wife Hayley flood back to him as a result, leading to him getting emotional and running off.
Roy visited Blackpool with Hayley in October 2013, enjoying a bittersweet holiday with her after she had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
He paid another visit last year when he considered scattering Hayley's ashes in the town.
Earlier this month, Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn confirmed that Roy and Cathy will continue to grow closer following his recent discovery of her hoarding secret.
Blackburn said: "Roy and Cathy have been muddling along at the allotment but that is a friendship that is going to really develop and blossom when Roy discovers Cathy's secret.
"She has been very troubled since the death of her husband, she has problems with her house and so she ends up moving in with Roy. But don't worry, it is just as friends."

I hope they stay good friends with no romance
Papers keep calling her girlfriend. I wish they would get their facts right
Coronation Street star Melanie Hill has opened up about her addiction to painkillers.
The actress, who plays Cathy Matthews on the ITV soap, revealed that she struggled to stop taking co-codamol after being prescribed the medication following a hip replacement operation.
"I needed a stick, but I had to get rid of it when I was shooting scenes," Hill told Woman magazine.
"I carried on for two years because I didn't want to take time out."
She continued: "I was on the maximum dose of co-codamol painkillers, and after two years it was hard getting off them.
"It took me three months to get completely weaned off them."
Hill joined the soap in April as Cathy, and her character befriended Roy Cropper following the death of his wife Hayley.
I cannot remember back much about the time Roy had on the beach with Hayley but get the impression Cathy was acting very much like Hayley did.
I cannot remember back much about the time Roy had on the beach with Hayley but get the impression Cathy was acting very much like Hayley did.
She was. The last straw was insisting that Roy paddle - just like Hayley did. I really felt for poor Roy in those scenes. I like Cathy though, and I hope their friendship will continue even if Roy's not ready to take it further.
Coronation Street's Roy Cropper saves partner Cathy Matthews' life as her flat bursts into flames
Cathy Matthews rescued Roy Cropper from a dark place after the death of his beloved wife Hayley in a truly gripping storyline that rocked Coronation Street earlier in the year.
And the cafe-owner's time to repay the favour has come as he's forced to play her hero in dramatic scenes which will air later in the year.
Timid Roy - played by David Neilson - turns strapping knight in shining armour as he saves Cathy (Melanie Hill) from a fire which takes over her entire flat.
He is driving to visit her with her sister - Nessa warner played by Sadie Shimmin - when they discover the building ablaze.
Their faces drop when the flames come into view and Roy breaks down in tears as he becomes concerned about Cathy's whereabouts.
He doesn't allow his emotions to get the better of him and puts on a brave face before entering the burning building.
Roy manages to rescue Cathy just in time and they emerge from the flat in a tight embrace.
She is visibly and understandably emotional and leans on her partner for support.
He willingly obliges and does his best to comfort her while they await the arrival of the emergency services, watching on as the flames destroy her home.
An ambulance and fire engine soon arrive on the scene and Cathy is escorted to safety by a paramedic.
She is given a check-up in the back of the ambulance during which she musters up the courage to announce she's to blame for the blaze.
Talking to the medical staff and her partner she explains she fell asleep on the sofa while something was cooking, causing the fire to break out.

Hold on a minute she had a house not a flat
The point of this story is to allow roy a break. So they must decide to travel around the world after this life changing experience. Using the proceeds of her selling her house that she sold before getting this to flat she burns down

Melanie Hill ( Cathy). Filmed her last scenes on Corrie two weeks ago, but, the door has been left open for her return. It seems her and Brian are separating, the emotional storyline is highlighting middle aged people who truly care for each other, but their relationship is not quite working out.
leaving alex and yasmeen?
