Why was the hospital staff referring to Ronnie as Mrs Mitchell??

Her name is Mitchell and these days a woman does not have to take the partner's name upon marriage

ah I thought it was a mistake, but i thought they said MRS not Ms or MIss, hence my puzzlement, in fact a woman never did have to take a mans name, you can call yourself ever you like, long as it's not for criminal reasons!
