Elliot is preparing for a family ski trip when he is surprised by the unexpected arrival of Oliver Valentine, who comes back into Holby as a patient. It's clear that Oliver is in a bad way and his heart is failing.

Elliot and Jac are devastated to discover that Oliver doesn't have much time left and there is no hope of effective treatment. However, when Oliver probes Elliot about the new device he is working on, he reveals that he wants Elliot to trial it on him...

Meanwhile, Arthur proves wiser than his years when he comes to Zosia and Guy's aid as they struggle to deal with an uncertain future.

Elsewhere, a well-meaning Ric tries to give some fatherly advice to his AAU flock, but does he create more trouble than he calms? It's been a hard year for all and the AAU family must pull together to bring about some Christmas cheer.

A new Holby City video previews Oliver Valentine's upcoming return to the show.

James Anderson's character arrives back on screen in surprising circumstances next week, as he is admitted to the hospital as a patient.

Oliver is in a bad way when he returns, as his heart is failing and there seems to be no hope of effective treatment.

His former colleagues are shocked by the news, but the surprises don't stop there. When Oliver enquires about the new device that Elliot has been working on, he requests for it to be trialled on him…

Oliver last appeared on screen in July 2013.
