I agree actors and actresses are supposed to act as role models. If they are found gulty of taking drugs or any other criminal offences, then they should be sacked.

CORONATION Street star Craig Charles is back boozing at 11am on the kind of early-morning binges that once led to his downward spiral of crack cocaine abuse.

Craig, 46, spent two hours knocking back large glasses of white wine and a triple Irish whiskey at the White Lion pub in Manchester immediately after shooting scenes for the hit ITV1 soap.

And this week Craig who confessed that his deadly drug habit brought him close to suicide also hit the bottle before and after filming in a string of daily midday sessions.

Our exclusive pictures taken over the past three weeks will spark fears that the reformed actor is slipping back into the bad habits that nearly cost him his career, his marriage and his life.

Out-of-control Craig, who was exposed smoking crack cocaine in 2007, was given a second chance by Corrie bosses and wife Jackie, 47, after he admitted himself into rehab and later vowed: Im clean.

One year after beating his addiction, he insisted he had his life back in order and claimed that he only enjoyed the occasional glass of wine. But our reporter watched as Craig TV cabbie Lloyd Mullaney left the Manchester studios after one days shooting around 11am and made a beeline for the nearby White Lion.

Favourite: White Lion near studios

Dressed in a black Adidas tracksuit top zipped up to his throat, he sat alone with a book as he necked three large glasses of white Italian Pinot Grigio the equivalent of a full bottle. As he relaxed, he told bar staff he was arranging a meeting with poet John Cooper Clarke and was gently quietened when he launched into a rendition of one of the writers explicit works.

Around 1pm he called a taxi to take him home to Altrincham, Cheshire, before downing a triple measure of neat Jameson whiskey for the road.

Coming clean in 2007, the actor told candidly how he hurtled towards self-destruction after following 11am drinking sessions with three-day drug binges.

He admitted: I had a ritual. I would be outside the pub at 11am. Then a few large vodka and oranges and a few beers inside until my dealer arrived from London.

Then I'd go back to my flat, double-lock the door, draw all the curtains and put the TV on with the volume down. I feel ashamed talking about it.

I would get out the rocks and smoke the crack and become paranoid. I would walk from one window at the front of the house to the back window for hours and hours.

I spent far too much money. Over the course of the year I blew about a quarter of a million quid £5,000 a week.

Craig added: At my lowest point I planned to gas myself to death in the car with a hosepipe. I was suicidal I lost the will to live.

I'm just happy to be alive now. Its a miracle Ive made it.

But this week we watched as the star diced with his recovery by having four drinking sessions in four days.

On Monday, Craig and co-star Chris Gascoyne, who plays alcoholic bookie Peter Barlow, headed to the Sawyers Arms pub in Manchester at 1.30pm.

Craig ordered his old favourite a double vodka and orange juice with a half pint of Carling lager.

Chris, 43, supped on a pint of John Smiths bitter.

On Tuesday, Craig finished a single scene around 4pm and walked straight to the White Lion where he sat alone and drained a large glass of wine before catching a taxi home.

Called to bar: The actor has a large early glass

On Wednesday, he raised eyebrows when he knocked back drinks in the pub both before and after filming scenes. Arriving from home in a taxi, the thirsty star was dropped off at the White Lion around 12.15pm and immediately ordered a large Pinot Grigio.

He scoffed a bowl of chips and gravy while knocking back another large glass of wine before walking a few hundred yards to the set around 1.20pm.

At 4pm he emerged with co-star Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald, and the pair headed to the White Lion.

They enjoyed two rounds white wine for Craig and Jack Daniels with coke for Simon, 36 before leaving in a cab.

On Thursday, he was back in the White Lion at just one minute past 12pm after a meeting with Corrie bosses. Meeting a friend for a boozy lunch, he drained four large glasses of Pinot Grigio before returning to the Granada studios at 2.15pm.

Back again: The star sink more white wine after a days filming

A friend told The People: Craig is becoming known for his boozy lunches, and people are beginning to worry.

It is known he is often in the pub and its not a good environment for him. He himself admitted it was his love of alcohol which led to his downward spiral into drug addiction.

It cant be good for him leaving work at just 11am and heading straight for the pub and getting stuck into the booze. And a Corrie source said: Craig was supposed to have cut back on the drink and thats what he would like people to think, but the truth is he is back on it.

It was the only the other day that he was joking to the crew that he had a monumental hangover.

If he has been on early filming and finds himself finishing mid morning, hell head straight to one of the pubs near the studios.

He can certainly handle his drink. But people do find it worrying that he is back on the booze given his past. We would all hate to see history {repeat itself.

Great news for fans for Craig Charles, he'll be back on our screens soon on Coronation Street after his stint away filming Red Dwarf.

And there's a rumour in The Sun today that says his character, cabbie Lloyd Mullaney, will make his return working for a rival cab-firm, and not for Streetcars on the cobbles.

Let's hope Steve gets Lloyd back on the books at Streetcars as soon as he can. Those two are Corrie gold together.

Craig has already started filming on Corrie, and The Sun have a picture of him "fuming as taxi breaks down".

Coronation Street star Craig Charles has confirmed that he will be sticking around on the soap for the foreseeable future.

The actor has been on an extended break from his role as Lloyd Mullaney, who finally returns to Weatherfield in early July.

Speaking to Soaplife, the 47-year-old explained that he now hopes to remain on the cobbles following his time away filming Red Dwarf.

Charles commented: "I don't want to leave - I've just signed another extension. I had a three-year deal with options and I've just picked up my options. I'm going to be able to explore different sides to Lloyd's character."

Lloyd's return storyline sees him come face-to-face with Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) while he is out working for another cab firm.

Charles continued: "He invested in a land deal in Jamaica with a family member, but it went belly up. So he's come back to Manchester and is working for a dodgy old cab firm and one day his engine blows up. When the smoke clears, Steve is standing there and they start chatting.

"Steve offers Lloyd a job back at Streetcars - but Lloyd gets the idea he's inviting him back as a partner."

Asked how Lloyd reacts to the news that Steve only wants him as a driver, the actor replied: "He's not happy. He says they have unfinished business and storms off and sleeps on Eileen's sofa for a couple of nights."

Coronation Street airs Lloyd's return on July 2.

Coronation Street actor Craig Charles has called for writers to reform his character Lloyd's double act with old friend Steve.

The Red Dwarf star suggested that the pair should move in together to maximise the impact of his rapport with co-star Simon Gregson.

Speaking to Inside Soap, Charles gushed: "I'd love for Lloyd and Steve to play the odd couple for a while! There's so much scope for comedy in that, and it would be great Corrie tradition too.

"We would be like the new Stan Ogden and Eddie Yeats - sat there in our boxers, string vests on, watching the telly, eating burgers and talking rubbish. It'd be great fun."

Lloyd Mullaney's surprise return to Weatherfield next Monday (July 2) sparks a feud between him and former Street Cars business partner Steve McDonald, culminating in a sports day brawl.

Referring to the cab drivers' hapless love lives, Charles added: "When it comes to women, Lloyd and Steve are always attracted to the wrong ones!

"Let's face it, Steve is probably the most unlucky man ever when it comes to love that lasts - and Lloyd comes a very close second to him."

The 47-year-old further joked: "The only difference between them is that Lloyd hasn't started to collect any ex-wives - not yet, anyway!"

Coronation Street's Steve McDonald has a heated showdown with Weatherfield returnee Lloyd Mullaney this evening.

Steve (Simon Gregson) is surprised to come face-to-face with Lloyd in tonight's (July 2) double bill of the soap, and is soon left pitying his old friend as it becomes clear that he has fallen on hard times.

The pair's reunion comes when Steve spots that a cash-strapped Lloyd (Craig Charles) has broken down while working for another cab firm. Deciding to help him out, Steve invites a delighted Lloyd back to work at Streetcars.

Steve's kind gesture has an unexpected outcome, however, as optimistic Lloyd wrongly assumes that he can become co-owner once again and begins arranging a bank loan.

Following a stressful day, Steve eventually loses his temper with Lloyd - making it clear that he's not selling shares after the mess Lloyd left him in with Becky last time. As Lloyd gets offended, it seems that a bitter rivalry could be brewing between the pair…

Craig Charles has admitted that he is shocked at how much he missed Coronation Street.

The Lloyd Mullaney actor has been on an extended break to film a new series of cult comedy Red Dwarf.

Speaking to ITV, Charles gushed: "How does it feel to be back? It feels brilliant actually. I'd never thought I'd say this but you kind of miss the place after a while.

"I've missed playing Lloyd because I love playing him as a character and, of course, I miss the Steve McDonald stuff. I've missed the cab office and I've even missed the chair. It's good to be home."

The Liverpudlian comic recently called for writers to maximise his on-screen chemistry with Simon Gregson.

Charles, who has played cab driver Lloyd since 2005, last month signed a three-year contract extension with the ITV soap.

Coronation Street star Craig Charles has admitted that his character Lloyd Mullaney is foolish to trust Tracy Barlow.

Last night's (July 5) episode of the ITV1 soap saw Tracy begin working on the switch at Lloyd's new cab firm Fare Ladies, hoping to support Streetcars boss Steve McDonald by sabotaging the rival business.

Tracy's scheming has already caused chaos for the new company as she has sent cabs in the wrong direction and tipped Steve off over lucrative jobs.

Speaking on This Morning today (July 6), Charles conceded that Lloyd should know better than to be fooled by Tracy (Kate Ford).

Charles laughed: "Why did Lloyd employ her? Is he stupid or what? But he's actually convinced that she wants to get back at Steve too… they're playing a little game with him. She just starts really sabotaging his business."

Asked whether things will get better for feuding friends Lloyd and Steve, the actor replied: "They're going to get quite bad for a while I imagine, but let's hope they make up because I love working with him."

Charles explained that starring alongside Simon Gregson, who plays Steve, is one of his favourite things about working at Coronation Street.

He said: "We have a ball filming it, especially with Simon Gregson. He's a great actor to work with. He's just sent me a text saying, 'I want abuse', but I'm not going to abuse him! He's actually really, really cool to work with."

Charles also teased that he is excited over a mystery future development for Lloyd.

He promised: "Just to talk about Lloyd one more second, in a few weeks' time, there's going to be something really iconic for Coronation Street happening to Lloyd. So I'll leave that as a little teaser!"

Coronation Street continues tonight (July 6) at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV1.

Coronation Street kicks off Lloyd Mullaney's huge new storyline in the coming days, as a chance meeting with an old flame leads to him discovering that he is a father.

When Lloyd comes face-to-face with ex-lover Mandy (Pamela Nomvete) for the first time in years, it seems that she is slightly uneasy to see him again. However, when Lloyd later meets Mandy's daughter Jenna (Krissi Bohn), all becomes clear and his life changes forever as he realises that he fathered a child with Mandy all those years back...

Digital Spy recently caught up with Craig Charles, who plays Lloyd, to hear all the gossip on what's to come as Mandy and Jenna become regular fixtures on the cobbles.

Were you surprised when you found out that Corrie had decided to bring in Lloyd's secret family?
"I wasn't really, as it was something that we had in the pipeline ages ago. We were originally going to get the storyline all together for the 50th anniversary, but then we knew I had to go off to do the new series of Red Dwarf, so we put it on hold for a while. There's never been a black family on Coronation Street, so we thought we'd redress that and put one in place.

"So I knew it was coming, but it's great to have it happen, and the actual storyline itself is great. It's Lloyd bumping into an old girlfriend who later went off with his best mate - he never knew that she'd given birth to his child and it's now nearly 30 years later.

"That whole story actually happened to a friend of mine just recently - he found out that he had a 14-year-old daughter who he never knew. So it's not as far-fetched as you'd think and I've really enjoyed doing it."

What can you tell us about the two newcomers?
"I'm so glad that they've brought in Pamela and Krissi, as they're really lovely women and great to work with. I did the auditions with both of them, but the decisions are made on an executive level, so you then have to go away and see who the bigwigs liked.

"Mandy is a very warm character and she'll have a great place on the street. She's not just involved in my storyline, she's involved in other storylines too and she becomes quite integral to the street. It's the same with Jenna, but that's in ways that I can't really tell you about at the moment. The two new characters are going to affect everybody."

Have you helped your new co-stars to settle in?
"I'm the ultimate help - I show them where the tea is, I show them where the milk is and they can get on with the rest! (Laughs.) No, obviously the show is a big machine and it can be quite daunting, especially for someone like Krissi who's quite a young actress. Krissi was actually about to give up the game and move away from acting, but all of a sudden she got a call, had this audition and landed this massive role. She's walking around pinching herself now and she can't believe how much things have changed.

"Pamela is an old hand as she's done soap operas before - she was in a South African soap opera for years. But Coronation Street is still a totally different kettle of fish to all of that, so hopefully I've helped them to settle in. It's not just me, though - all of the cast are very welcoming and everyone's really nice when someone new joins.

"I'd been on television for 30 years before I joined Coronation Street, and I was still really nervous before I walked into The Rovers. You're making iconic television here as it's the nation's biggest TV show. You do find that daunting, no matter who you are."

Does Lloyd still have strong feelings for Mandy so many years on?
"Yeah, he says that she was 'the one that got away'. Maybe the reason he's been drifting all of these years is because the love of his life escaped him. Through circumstances, he's been brought back together with Mandy, and I think he's going to grasp that and make up for lost time."

Will Lloyd be a good father to Jenna?
"Yeah, I think so! He's already like a father figure to loads of the street - he's one of those characters who everyone comes to with their problems. He should have his own column - Lloyd's Letters! It could be in Woman's Own!"

It sounds like it may be difficult for Jenna to accept Lloyd at first, though…
"Yeah, initially she's very wary of Lloyd. All of a sudden she realises that her father wasn't the man she knew - Johnny, who has since died. So a lot of Jenna's storyline is about overcoming that, and Lloyd going through a similar process because he never knew she existed.

"So at first we're in total shock, and Jenna doesn't really take the news very well. Lloyd really doesn't want to replace Johnny, because it's 28 years later and he's missed the bike rides, teaching her to swim and all of that. Basically, he just wants a relationship where he can get to know her, and see where things go from there."

Is this one of your favourite storylines from your time at Corrie?
"All of the stories I do on Corrie are my favourites. This is a big one for Lloyd, it really is, but being an actor your main concern is wanting to have material that is a challenge. You just want to stretch yourself as an actor, and stories like this show what you can do.

"I'm chuffed to be doing the storyline. But each day's a different day - I don't have favourite scenes or storylines, it's just that every day I want to be challenged."

This is a serious storyline for Lloyd, but will we still see his comedy side?
"Oh, there's still loads of me and Steve McDonald in the cab office to come. There's lots of comedy on the way! And once this new story settles down, it's quite a fun family. There'll be quite a lot of funny stuff going on within Lloyd and his family."

Did you miss Corrie when you took your break for Red Dwarf?
"I couldn't wait to get back. It's like being in a family here, because all of the crew and the cast are really close. I was only supposed to be gone for three months, but it turned out to be six months so I was really eager to get back.

"Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald, is one of my closest friends. He'd be round at my house at night and going into work the next day and I wouldn't be, which didn't feel right! I missed it a lot, because I really like being here."

When you joined Corrie, did you expect Lloyd to have this longevity?
"When I joined in 2005, I didn't think I'd be here now, no. But it's one of those jobs where, once you get your feet under the table and get to know everyone, it's very difficult to leave.

"I've had some great experiences as an actor, as a poet and a comedian, but none so much as here where I think, 'I really like doing this and I don't want to go - don't sack me!' You feel really at home, and to be honest it's not really work. Some people will tell you it is, but it's not."

The big news recently has been Sue Johnston's arrival. Are there any more Lloyd and Gloria scenes coming up?
"Yeah, I've filmed quite a bit with Sue, actually. Me and Sue go way back from her days in Brookside. Although I was never in Brookside, I knew her then.

"We go back a long way, and she's absolutely hilarious in Corrie. She's playing a really crazy part and I think people are going to love her. She's brilliant, and when you think about how Coronation Street is attracting actresses of her calibre, it's all looking good for the future, isn't it?"

Lloyd Mullaney (Craig Charles) clutches his chest as he finishes a 5k fun run

Actor Craig Charles was pictured clutching his chest and collapsing on the ground as he filmed scenes for the ITV soap.

The cab driver takes part in a charity fun run, which is dedicated to the memory of late Weatherfield resident Hayley Cropper, but struggles to finish after suffering from chest pain.

Lloyd then collapses against a tree, much to the dismay of his daughter Jenna (Krissi Bohn) who runs over to help him.

Charles can be seen falling on to a blue crash mat in the set of images, which suggest that his character could be left seriously ill following the incident.

Coronation Street star Craig Charles is saying goodbye to the cobbles to concentrate on filming new episodes of Red Dwarf, Digital Spy can confirm.

The actor will bow out on screen as Weatherfield cabbie Lloyd Mullaney in September after ten years playing the character.

Red Dwarf has been commissioned for two new series, which will see Charles reprise his role as Dave Lister. Shooting on the episodes will begin in the autumn ahead of transmission in 2016 and 2017.

Coronation Street bosses are still finalising the details of Lloyd's exit plot, so fans will have to wait and see how his departure affects his best friend Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and his other loved ones on the Street.

Charles said today (May 2): "I have had an absolutely fantastic ten years on Coronation Street and I will be very sad to leave. Lloyd has become a huge part of my life and I have made some amazing friends with whom I will always keep in touch.

"But I feel I owe it to my colleagues on Red Dwarf to join them in filming the new series and finding out what is in store for Lister and the others. I would love to return to Coronation Street at some point in the future."

Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn added: "Craig has provided us with a decade packed with laughter, tears and great drama. It won't just be Steve who misses Lloyd, it will be all of his Corrie friends and colleagues. We wish him all the very best."

Lloyd's on-screen girlfriend Andrea Beckett (Hayley Tamaddon) is also bidding farewell to Corrie, with a dramatic story expected for her in the show's live episode in September.

Lloyd Mullaney's life is about to get complicated on Coronation Street next week after he makes a big mistake by sleeping with Liz McDonald in the wake of his split from Andrea Beckett.

Lloyd immediately regrets spending the night with Liz, but he is backed into a corner when she explains to a horrified Steve that they have a future together.

Although Lloyd has no intentions of settling down with Liz, he is forced to keep up the pretence in order to avoid hurting Steve. Later, when Andrea begs for another chance, he is forced to break her heart in order to protect his best friend's feelings.

Here, Craig Charles - who plays Lloyd - talks about his character's big mistake and what the future holds for him and Andrea now.

How did Lloyd feel when Andrea left?
"He was pretty low, he felt she had let him down but he didn't necessarily expect her to go. He's just not great at relationships."

He leaves a message telling Andrea he's missing her but then he goes out with Erica. Is it just to take his mind off of her?
"He and Erica get on really well over some drinks in the Rovers and Liz suggests they might make a good couple. Steve then tells Lloyd he thinks they might be a good match. He thinks it is over with Andrea so he doesn't really see going out for a drink with Erica is an issue."

How does Lloyd feel when Andrea catches him and Erica having a drink?
"He is really shocked when she walks in and he feels bad at her reaction. She is clearly upset and feels he has moved on already. Andrea doesn't know this is the first 'date' they have been on."

Liz invites Lloyd over for a TV and take away night. Can you talk us through what ends up happening?
"Lloyd is upset about what happened when Andrea walked in on him with Erica so Liz invited him for a takeaway and movie to cheer him up. Lloyd is reluctant at first because he is in a bad mood. But agrees and after a few drinks she comforts him with a hug and one thing leads to another."

Would you have ever put Liz and Lloyd together?
"Well they do have a history of course. On paper it is not the most obvious of matches but they do get on really well. This is probably not the best thing for either of them at the moment so it is no doubt doomed!"

Is Lloyd regretful afterwards?
"Lloyd is definitely the one who regrets it the most. He has got himself into a mess and he is very wry of upsetting both Liz and Steve."

Lloyd and Liz are caught out the next morning by Steve and Michelle. How does Steve react to the news that Lloyd has slept with his mum?
"Steve is horrified but Liz insists to Steve they have done nothing wrong and that they have a future together. This was not what Lloyd was thinking but he now has to go along with it."

Steve insists that Lloyd invite Liz out to dinner. What does Lloyd make of this?
"It is the last thing he wants, to be honest. He confides in Dev but he is a bit of a coward and goes along with what Steve suggests."

Is Lloyd worried about how all this could affect his friendship with Steve?
"Steve is the person Lloyd is most worried about upsetting - they have only just got their friendship back on an even keel and now he is risking it again. But really he would be better being up front now, dragging it on is only going to make it worse in the end."

Before their date, Andrea appears and begs Lloyd to take her back. Is he tempted?
"There is nothing he wants more than to give it another try - he has totally forgiven her but now he is in an impossible situation. He goes into the back yard to chat to Andrea and tells her he wants to give it another go but he realises he has to tell her about Liz - and of course that is not going to go down well - even though they were 'on a break'."

Andrea begs Lloyd for another chance

How does Andrea react when Lloyd confesses he spent the night with Liz?
"She is stunned obviously, but it is in his hands now. It is how he acts from here that will decide what happens with him and Andrea as she can probably forgive him."

What does Lloyd decide to do?
"He tells Liz that Andrea knows but then he goes out on another date with Liz. He is still worried about upsetting Liz, that seems to worry him more than Andrea's feelings at this point!"

Andrea was lying when he met her and still was with her husband. she has since lied again after stealing from him. I know Lloyd is going to get back with her and leave off in the sunset but I wanted better for Lloyd

Coronation Street star Craig Charles has opened up over his decision to leave the show in a moving interview.

Speaking on ITV's This Morning today (August 19), the actor revealed that the sudden death of his brother Dean last year made him re-evaluate his life.

Craig Charles as Lloyd in Coronation Street

Charles has already finished filming all of his pre-recorded scenes as Coronation Street's Lloyd Mullaney, although he will be back on set next month for his actual exit in the soap's hour-long live episode.

Afterwards, the star will be concentrating on shooting two new series of Red Dwarf, on which he will reprise his role as Dave Lister.

Reflecting on his choice to leave Corrie, Charles explained: "It's really quite sad, actually, but my brother died last year. He was 52 - I'm 51. When he died I thought, 'There's things that I've got to do. I've got to do some things before it's my time'. There's so many things that, because Coronation Street is such a big part of your life, you don't get to do.

"So I've just signed a deal with Sony Records and we're bringing out an album on September 18 - a compilation of funk and soul. It's some of the best records ever committed to plastic - 3 CDs on that."

Lloyd will be leaving alongside on-off girlfriend Andrea

He continued: "Then I'm working with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra on this epic poem. I've put my poetry on standby, so I've written this poem called 'Scary Fairy and Tales of the Dark Wood'.

"We're doing that with a 90-piece orchestra for Halloween. We're taking over [Radio 2's] Friday Night is Music Night and calling it Friday Night is Fright Night. It's really quite scary, it's really exciting working with a big orchestra like that.

"Then of course mid-November we start making Red Dwarf. We do two series of Red Dwarf back-to-back, which will take me all the way up until March. Then in March I'll sit down and go, 'I wish I was back on Coronation Street!'"

Charles also joked that he may have stuck around for longer on Corrie if he had known that he was close to reaching the 1,000 episode mark.

He said: "I don't think I'm leaving in a box. I've just found out I've done nearly 950 episodes. I hadn't even filmed 1,000 yet - if they'd told me that...!"

Charles's on-screen love interest Hayley Tamaddon (Andrea Beckett) will also be leaving with him in the live broadcast.

Departing Coronation Street star Craig Charles has admitted that he originally asked for "time off" from the show rather than a permanent exit.

The actor is about to bow out from his role as Weatherfield cabbie Lloyd Mullaney so that he can concentrate on filming two new series of Red Dwarf.

Speaking on BBC One's Breakfast this morning (September 17), Charles confessed that he found himself caught between both shows when it became apparent that he would have to make a choice.

He explained: "One of the things was, I did ask Coronation Street if I could have some time off to make Red Dwarf. They'd given me a lot of time off before to make Red Dwarf and to go into the jungle and things like that. I think they just thought, 'You've had enough time off now'.

"We're doing two series of Red Dwarf back-to-back. We start filming November 2. The thing about it is, Coronation Street will always go on and on and on, and they can't really make Red Dwarf without me. I was 23 when I started Red Dwarf so I've known these guys all of my adult life."

Lloyd's Coronation Street exit will air next week. The show's hour-long live episode will see the locals gather to give him and his partner Andrea Beckett (Hayley Tamaddon) a farewell party at the Rovers Return.

Charles has already expressed his excitement over exploring other new opportunities, but he added: "I'm not leaving in a box. The door, I suppose, is kind of open for me to return at some stage. It's ITV's flagship show. As a television actor, it's very difficult to find something that's better, really.

"A lot of people leave and think they're going on to better things and you see them doing walk-on parts in Casualty or Waterloo Road. It's very difficult to find something that's better, but hopefully I'm taking the leap and things will work out well."

Coronation Street airs its live episode on Wednesday, September 23 at 7.30pm on ITV.

Craig Charles has spoken about his exit from Coronation Street, saying he is hopeful he can return to the soap one day.

The actor's character Lloyd Mullaney left the Street with his partner Andrea Beckett during Coronation Street Live last month.

Speaking to The Mirror, Charles said: "Corrie is such a nice place to work, they make it very difficult for you to leave.

"The money is good, they are lovely crew and cast and you get very comfortable. It is cold out there for actors a lot of the time, so if you've got a steady job it is difficult to leave."

He went on to say: "But you have got to be brave and turn round and say, I didn't leave in a box did I? So if it all blows up in my face I could hopefully go back with my tail between my legs."

Speaking about people who decide to leave soaps, he said: "A lot of people leave to go onto bigger and better things and then you see them three years later with a walk-on part in Waterloo Road. I know it is a risk and that.

"But Coronation Street will go on and on without me, but they wouldn't do Red Dwarf without me, so unless I agreed, they would scrap it, and I have known those guys for 30 years and it is nice to go and finish that adventure."

I hope he comes back one day too, with wife and child, always liked his character :)
