Former Brush Strokes star Karl Howman has joined the cast of EastEnders.

Show bosses are keeping quiet about exactly who the actor is playing and what is ahead for his character, but they have promised that he will cause a stir for a number of the Walford residents.

Speaking about his arrival, Howman said: "It is an honour to have joined such an iconic show as EastEnders and I have received such a lovely welcome from all involved.

"They are truly one big family with a work ethic to be in awe of. The twists and turns, character and plots that are coming make it all the more exciting for me."

EastEnders' executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins added: "We have been trying to get the brilliant Karl Howman to join EastEnders for a very long time - and it's fantastic that it's finally happened.

"An authentic Londoner with grit, sparkle and a touch of danger, Karl is the perfect fit for this new character, whose appearance on the Square will open old wounds and reignite old passions."

Meanwhile, a show source teased: "Since the moment Karl arrived, it was like he has been here for years. There is a lot in store for his character - he's playing a loveable rogue but there seems to be a lot more than meets the eye."

As well as starring in Brush Strokes, the actor is known for playing the title character in Mulberry in the early '90s and for appearing in Flash adverts.

EastEnders star Karl Howman has admitted that he isn't sure that Walford couple Buster Briggs and Shirley Carter are the right choice to bring up their granddaughter Jade.

Brigg's character Buster and his partner Shirley are currently supporting their son Dean's decision to fight for custody of Jade - the daughter he fathered with Shabnam Masood.

The trio will head to court next week but they face opposition from Shabnam and her husband Kush Kazemi, who are also fighting for custody.

Whilst speaking to Inside Soap, Howman admitted that he isn't sure if he thinks Shirley and Buster are really capable of taking care of the youngster, but praised the scriptwriters for exploring the issue.

Howman said: "I think what they desire is a strong family unit. Dean does want Jade and rightly or wrongly, Buster and Shirley are trying to provide him with some stability. They are attempting to build a family and hopefully it is achieved without little Jade being upset in any way.

"Do I think they are capable of taking care of her? I would want to do what is right for her. As an onlooker, I am not sure if it is the right environment to bring a young girl of that age into.

"It is the sort of thing the scriptwriters are right to explore, though. There have to be moral dilemmas otherwise there wouldn't be a show."

Since arriving in Walford last year, Buster has been attempting to make up for lost time with his estranged son Dean. However, while Shirley remains in denial about Dean's dangerous side, it has become clear that Buster has slight doubts about his innocence.

Speaking about whether Buster believes Dean could have raped Linda, Howman said: "We have seen a flicker of doubt in his mind before, during a scene they had together in Blades.

"Buster couldn't get a direct answer out of Dean when he challenged him on it - so in the back of his mind he is still slightly suspicious of his son.

"That being said, Shirley is totally convinced of Dean's innocence. He obviously loves her to put up with everything that goes on in the family. He probably had an easier life in jail."

EastEnders continues tomorrow night (November 26) on BBC One.

It could all be over for EastEnders couple Shirley Carter and Buster Briggs next week, as he packs his bags to leave.

The pair's relationship has never been the most straightforward, but it'll come under even more strain in upcoming episodes.

As for what's to blame? You guessed it - they're clashing over their son Dean Wicks, who's preparing to stand trial for his crimes.

When the tension escalates into next week, Mick will start to realise that all is not well between the duo. However, nothing can prepare him for the shock when he and Lee later find Buster packing his bags.

A concerned Lee and Mick desperately try to convince Buster to stay and remind him of how much he has to stick around for, but it soon becomes clear that the decision ultimately rests with Shirley.

Shirley does arrive amid all the commotion, but will she convince Buster to change his mind? Or will she agree that their relationship is over?

EastEnders will be waving goodbye to the character of Buster Briggs, Digital Spy can exclusively reveal.

Karl Howman has already filmed his final scenes for the BBC soap after nearly two years in the role.

Exact details of Buster's exit are naturally being kept under wraps for now, but his relationship with Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) and affair with Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) will no doubt be ones to watch in the weeks ahead.

As his relationship with Shirley is well and truly fizzling out, Buster has recently sought romance elsewhere by pursuing Kathy.

If upcoming episodes see Buster remain caught between both women in his life, could Shirley discover the heartbreaking truth that he's betrayed her?

Howman joined the cast of EastEnders in late 2014. Unusually, his character's identity was kept a secret until broadcast, but he was later revealed as an old flame of Shirley's and the father of Mick Carter and Dean Wicks.

As well as his complicated love life, Buster's storylines have revolved around his work on the market and the difficulties he faced when Dean's evil true colours were revealed.

Buster's exit will air in a few weeks' time.
