Coronation Street bosses have signed up former Emmerdale and Bad Girls star Claire King for a guest stint on the soap.

The actress has landed the part of Erika, who will arrive on the cobbles in December as an old friend of Liz McDonald (Beverley Callard).

Erika previously worked as a barmaid for Liz in Spain and decides to seek her out after arriving back in the UK.

The newcomer's arrival leads to some happier times for local businessman Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) as Erika immediately sets her sights on him, leading to a fling between the pair.

Speaking of her new role, King commented: "I am beyond thrilled to be joining the cast of Coronation Street playing the funny and feisty Erika, who looks certain to ruffle a few feathers once her high heels hit those world famous cobbles!

"A stint in Corrie is one of those ticks on most actor's bucket list of jobs you dream of doing, so I can't wait to start filming in a few weeks' time!"

Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn added: "Erika is a woman who lives life to the full. Nick doesn't stand a chance once she has set her sights on him, but he's not complaining!

"We are delighted to have Claire on board to play Erika, she is a fabulous actress who will be a great addition to the cast."

Show chiefs have confirmed that Erika will be on screen for a few weeks from December, before jetting back to Spain at the end of the year.

King is best known for her role as iconic Emmerdale character Kim Tate and was most recently on screen as a contestant on Celebrity Big Brother.

She might be good but it is a shame that they are casting famous people. There must be other actors with talent out there. When you get people crossing over from soaps it all gets less believable. Luckily I just watch Coronation Street.

Coronation Street bosses have decided to extend Claire King's storyline, Digital Spy can exclusively reveal.

The former Emmerdale and Bad Girls actress recently filmed a short guest stint with the ITV soap, but show producers are already making plans for her character to return.

As announced in September, King will be seen on Coronation Street in the run-up to Christmas as newcomer Erika, who will be a love interest for Nick Tilsley (Ben Price).

King completed filming her contracted episodes earlier this month, but it won't be the last time she steps on the cobbles.

Speaking to Digital Spy at the RTS North West Awards, Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn commented: "I can confirm Claire will be coming back. What an asset to a show."

Asked whether Erika could become a long-stay character, Blackburn replied: "Who knows? At the moment, the story has got a natural end to it, but let's just see how it goes.

"The danger is that you find a really good actor and stick them in regardless of story. We've got a story and it's not forever, but we'll take it from there."

Erika is an old friend of Liz McDonald, who previously worked for the Rovers landlady in Spain. She decides to seek Liz out after arriving back in the UK and soon sets her sights on Nick as she settles into Weatherfield.

After a difficult year, Nick will finally enjoy some fun as he embarks on a fling with Erika - which could prove to be the tonic he needs to make a fresh start with his life.

I missed this when you first posted Lizann.
I wish she was back in Emmerdale too.
They could do.with a female character that
can play evil without looking gormless.
Seen her & liked her in other parts but
she will always be Kim Tate to me.
There were rumours earlier this year
about meetings with Emmerdale producers:

I hear she was very good in Emmerdale. Even though I have never watched it , she is so associated with the show. But if she is good I am sure she will make her character believable like Sue Johnson did.

Coronation Street's new recruit Claire King has spoken about her romance storyline for the first time, backing her character Erika as a good match for Nick Tilsley.

The former Emmerdale and Bad Girls actress will make her first appearance on the cobbles in the run-up to Christmas, when Erika arrives in Weatherfield to catch up with her old friend Liz McDonald.

As Erika settles into Weatherfield, she soon takes a fancy to Nick and they end up enjoying a fling together.

Praising the pairing, King revealed that Erika and Nick work well together as neither of them wants anything more serious.

"Erika wants it to be a fling and I think he wants the same, but she's worried because it's New Year's Eve and she has to tell him that, not knowing how he really feels," King explained.

"Luckily he's thinking the same so it's quite a good little catch."

She continued: "Perhaps because she's more mature and not a kid, she can handle just being friends with benefits. I think he's quite capable of doing that and enjoys having her around - she brings him out of his shell as well as his suits.

"It has been really good for both of them, so they possibly could just go on and there wouldn't be any jealousy and negative things you can get with someone that is a bit younger. They are both mature enough to handle it and to enjoy themselves sexually too."

King finished filming her short guest stint earlier this month, but Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn has since revealed plans to bring her back for more episodes.

Coronation Street airs Claire King's first scenes on the cobbles later this month as she takes on the role of Liz McDonald's friend Erica.

The former Emmerdale and Bad Girls actress will be featuring in a steamy storyline as Erica sets her sights on local businessman Nick Tilsley (Ben Price), bringing him some happiness after his difficult year.

Here, Claire chats about Erica's arrival, what fans can expect from the character and why she's unlikely to return to Emmerdale as Kim Tate.

What is Erica's background?
"When Liz originally went over to Spain, she met Erica there and I think they went through quite a few things together. They have each other's backs, so they soon became good muckers. Erica runs a bar over there and I imagine at the time she was married and her husband was a little handy with his fisticuffs.

"Erica is a tough person, straight-talking but she's got a good sense of humour as well, so she's not like the other character in the Dales! She's not bitchy. I think she's got out of this relationship and she's wanting to live life to the full."

Why has Erica turned up?
"Erica has come to see her mother and sort out some family business. Her mother is not so good but they don't particularly get on. I don't really know the reason for this yet, but I'm sure it will all come out in the wash.

"Erica's mother lives in Preston, so because Liz lives nearby, she thought she'd pop in. She did send her a postcard beforehand saying, 'Scrub your doorstep because I'm arriving soon!' But Liz doesn't get the postcard until after Erica's arrived!"

How will you feel if people start referring to your character as a cougar?
"I don't mind that but I don't think she's particularly a cougar. In this instance I suppose she is because she's got a younger guy that she actually clicks with, but I think it's good for Nick as well because it brings him out of his shell and his suits actually. He starts wearing some jeans and things!"

Nick's impressed by Erica

It sounds like she literally gets him out of his suits!
"Well there is that as well! In every scene there's a reference to going to bed, having a drink or something to eat. I think there are only two scenes where I don't have a glass in my hand, so I think she's probably the lush cougar!"

Is it an instant attraction between them?
"No, I think it's one of those things where they just get talking and Nick sees something in her that's not like a clingy younger person, so he doesn't think this could be trouble. He just thinks, 'Wow, she's got a great attitude to life, just wants to live it and I want some of that'. They just get on. From the word go they say it's just a fling, so it's two adults just enjoying it."

Did you get a chance to get to know Ben Price before the racier scenes started?
"Every time I do bed scenes, it's usually, 'Oh hi, I'm Claire. Well, let's get to it!' At least this time we got to know each other a bit and he's absolutely lovely. He's been really welcoming, as Bev [Callard] has, because I've done most of my work with those two."

How will Gail react to this new relationship?
"Not very well at all! You can imagine Gail is not impressed and thinks Erica is brash, flamboyant and a bit of an old soak really - and she's probably not far off!"
http://i1.cdnds.net/14/48/618x416/soaps-corrie-8534-2.jpg

Is there tension between Erica and Nick's ex Leanne?
"No and I was expecting that with her being the ex-missus, but actually we get on quite well because Nick and Leanne are quite at ease themselves as ex-husband and wife and I think Leanne is pleased to see him not be so mopey. Erica also instigates Leanne working for Nick at the Bistro again."

How does the relationship play out?
"They both just want a fling and know what it is. They're both of a certain age - they're not teenagers with all these hormones raging. But then Nick starts thinking maybe Erica wants a bit more out of it and starts to get worried when her mother has a fall and she can't go back to Spain.

"Erica also starts thinking he's a bit more clingy than what she wanted, so they're both at cross-purposes and think the other is falling for them. So there are a few awkward scenes and then they have to talk about it, so New Years Eve is the big boom!"

Does Erica rival Liz when it comes to revealing clothes?
"She's more booby and leaves the legs bit to Liz! Erica is skinny jeans and leather jacket."

How does it feel to be back in a soap?
"It's been a long, long time. I don't think people really understand how long it's been - 16 years. The good thing about it is you've been there, done it before and know the system to a certain extent. This is more full-on, but it's a very well-oiled machine.

"You know it's going to be hard work - that you turn up and know your lines. You have no idea where you've come from or where you're going because there are so many scripts. Usually actors are very meticulous about continuity, but you just don't have time on a soap, so you have to rely on costume and make-up. As teamwork, it works."
http://i2.cdnds.net/14/48/618x411/soaps-corrie-8534-1.jpg

Erica flirts with Nick

Were you nervous about joining?
"I was, particularly on the first day and the first scene in The Rovers because you walk in there and think, 'Oh god, there are all these people here and they're all watching me'. If you ask anyone in the cast they'll all say that, even now after 20 years. I just had a short scene with three or four people, so it wasn't a full bar so not too bad. I did most of my scenes in the Bistro first so it was easier."

Were you actively looking for another soap role?
"I knew [Coronation Street producer] Stuart Blackburn when he was the exec at Emmerdale and he came to see me in a play at The Lowry called Fetish Nights, which was quite funny but not for children!

"We'd been talking about things and whether there was the possibility and I said, 'Well I don't think I'll go back to Emmerdale, I think too much water has passed under the bridge now for that character, but I would consider Corrie'. It's probably the only one I would do, having done Hollyoaks. It was skirting around, but it was in his head after that!"

Do people still see you as Emmerdale's Kim Tate?
"They did for ages and that's still the case in certain areas, although then you get people who call me Karen from Bad Girls. And then you'll get Strictly fans who say, 'You were great, you laughed your way through'. After Bad Girls, I did get 'Claire' and people thought of me as an actress rather than a character in a TV show and that was nice. It'd be good to get rid of 'Emmerdale actress' as it has been a while."

You don't tend to play quiet characters!
"I'm glad you said that and not non-bitchy characters because there's only been two, Down To Earth and Emmerdale and the others have all been strong women. More recently I suppose they've been comedic. For the last five years all I've done is comedy really, and a lot of people don't know that because it's either been shoved on E4 or it's been on stage so a limited audience.

"I suppose it's the way I look as well. I'm not 5 foot 2 and size 4, I'm broad-shouldered and strong-looking but that's fine, you're playing to your strengths. Type-casting's not painful because it helps your job."

Would you like Erica to become a long-stay character?
"I think we've got a great character here and I think she could go on. There are scenes in which we were laughing out loud. I think there's something which could be really big with Liz and Erica - they could be a tour de force. Because Annie [Kirkbride] is off for a bit, Liz needs a mate and she's got a playmate in Erica. I think that could be a really good story."

Coronation Street viewers will see Erica Holroyd arrive back in Weatherfield next week, much to Nick Tilsley's delight.

Former Emmerdale and Bad Girls actress Claire King previously made an appearance on the cobbles at tail end of last year.

Erica is an old friend of Liz McDonald, who previously worked for the Rovers landlady in Spain. She decided to seek Liz out after arriving back in the UK, but soon set her sights on Nick (Ben Price).

When Erica turns up at the pub to surprise Liz once again, it is clear that Nick is thrilled to see her and is keen to rekindle their fling.

Coronation Street fans will see the return of Erica Hulroyd next month and she has a massive shock for Nick Tilsley - she’s pregnant!
TV fans will know that the pair have enjoyed a steamy romance ever since Erica - played by Claire King - first showed up in Weatherfield.
Erica only stayed a short while before leaving, but she popped back to the cobbles earlier this year and the pair picked up where they left off.
But the couple didn’t have safe sex and when Erica returns for a third time she has a baby bombshell for Nick.
She will head straight to see him and deliver the shocking news that she’s expecting his baby after their one-night stand.
Erica’s baby news couldn’t come at a worse time because while she’s been gone, Nick has been getting close to Carla Connor.
Bosses are keeping tight-lipped over what happens next but it’s thought they wanted to explore the issue of women having babies in later life.
Erica is 49 so there could be health issues as the pregnancy unfolds.
A show insider said: “Nick is going to be left speechless when Erica shows up again and reveals she’s having his baby.
“He is enjoying Carla’s company but obviously the idea of being a dad is a big deal for him given what’s happened to him over the last few years.
“Can you imagine what Gail’s going to say!?”

Coronation Street actress Claire King has revealed that her character Erica Holroyd will be pregnant with Nick Tilsley's baby.

Speaking to The Mirror, King said that the storyline reduced her to tears because she never had children of her own.

"This storyline is amazing," she said. "You often see teen mums on TV but how often do you hear of an older one? But it has also been more difficult than I could ever have imagined.

"I went to a meeting in January and was told that Erica was due to fall pregnant. At first I was delighted to be given such an important storyline.

"But afterwards, when I was alone, the connection to my past dragged up all the feelings I had buried deep inside and I found myself crying at home.

"Not having children is something I thought I had got over. But the storyline has brought back memories and emotions I hadn't realised I hadn't actually properly dealt with. I had quite a few tears over it that week."

King, who had a hysterectomy in 2010, added that working on the storyline has helped her to acknowledge her feelings.

"I think dealing with this storyline might have helped me," she said. "It's going to be gripping. When I heard what was in store, my jaw hit the floor."

King continued: "Erica doesn't want anything from Nick and isn't even sure yet if she wants to keep the baby. She's a bit shocked at first but then she comes around to the idea and thinks, 'Why not?'

"There are some lovely scenes where Nick is very supportive. It brings them closer together and they try to make a go of it."

Coronation Street will air the scenes of Erica's return in a few weeks' time.

Erica will suffer a miscarriage in an upcoming storyline

Recent episodes have seen Erica (Claire King) stun her former flame Nick Tilsley by turning up in Weatherfield and announcing that she is expecting his baby.

The shock news put a dampener on Nick's hopes for a romance with Carla Connor, as he vowed to stand by Erica and his unborn child.

However, hard-hitting scenes will see Erica rushed into hospital after she suffers pains during a quiz night at the Rovers.

Viewers will then see Nick return to the pub to tell Liz that Erica has lost the baby, The Sun reports.

The storyline is reportedly one of many heartbreaking plots lined up in the coming months as Erica struggles to come to terms with her loss.

Its a pity about the miscarriage - it could have
made an interesting story particularly now that
Alison king is taking a break-so no long term
relationship between Nick and Carla?

When someone of Ericas age becomes pregnant
a lot of discussion is about whether pregnancy
will go full-term and the baby have a disability.
Which is understandable but women do give
birth to healthy babies at that age.

No mention that the parents with have the
responsiblity of child well past retirement age.
Tho that seems to be moving further & further
over the horizon!!

They did do a similar story in Corrie years ago
Bet was married to Alec Gilroy and similar age
to Erica?.In one episode she discovers she is
pregnant. Very soon after is taken ill( also in
Rovers) is rushed to hospital and Alec comes
back later ( very upset) to say she had lost
baby. Then it was never mentioned again-
so no real point to story.?

Coronation Street star Claire King has confirmed press reports that she has signed a new contract, allowing her to stay on the show until early next year.

The former Emmerdale and Bad Girls actress has been appearing as Erica Holroyd on the cobbles since December 2014, after being introduced as a new love interest for Nick Tilsley (Ben Price).

Recent reports have suggested that the actress will be sticking around on the ITV soap but she has now taken to Twitter to confirm the news.

Replying to a tweet that congratulated her on landing a permanent contract, King added that she would be continuing in the role until February 2016, saying: "There till Feb! Thank you x"

King recently admitted that she was keen to stay with the soap beyond her current contract.

Erica is currently pregnant with Nick's baby but the storyline is set to take a tragic turn over the summer.

Has she had a load of botox or something as her face looks wrong.

Coronation Street star Claire King has claimed a facelift saved her acting career after the "phone stopped ringing" as she approached the age of 50.

The actress, who plays Erica Holroyd, admitted that she was struggling to find work and couldn't even afford to buy fuel for her car, until she went on TV show Stitch Me, Lift Me, Tuck Me.

The programme showed King getting a mini-facelift at a Harley Street clinic - a surgery in which a stitch is placed under each cheek to pull up the lower half of the face.

Speaking to Hello! magazine, King said: "When I looked at my double chin and sagging jawline, I was prepared to try a cosmetic procedure to improve my chances of being offered new parts in the job I Ioved.

"Although my older peers had warned me that when actresses reach the big 5-0, work often starts to dry up, I couldn't imagine it ever happening to me.

"But then, a few years before I'd even reached that landmark birthday, the phone stopped ringing. It was as sudden as a tap being turned off. I was devastated.

"I felt so low and unsure of myself that I didn't want to leave the house. Sometimes I couldn't even afford to - I didn't have enough money to fill the car with petrol."

King, who previously starred in Emmerdale for 10 years as Kim Tate, also revealed that she was prepared to give up acting if she hadn't landed her Coronation Street role.

Recalling the moment she was asked to audition for the ITV show, King said:"My heart leapt. But I promised myself there and then that if I didn't get it, I would give up the job I loved - I would quit acting."

I thought she looked ok before the face lift. Papers saying she could not afford to leave the house. There really blow everything out of proportion. Of course she could leave her house...she has two legs

I can't see her lasting long in corrie. Story lines dried up. I thought they were really going to make a story of the impact of her miscarriage. She needs to have a back up plan if work is at risk. Acting work is not a regular thing so its propbably more important to plan for a rainy day.

Me too! They devoted all of one episode to her grief, and now Nick's just with her out of pity. It's not looking good for Erica...

Well a couple of years there were several
reports that top ED management were having
meetings at top hotel with a former star .
It could have been lunch only? and no name
mentioned but it got converted into luring
Claire King back- but nothing happened"

She left for new pastures and was in Bad Girls
but probably wishes she hadnt left ED - would
quite likely still be there.!

She has not left, she signed a new contract a while ago which means she is on screen until early next year

Well I hope 'this is it' for her and Nick! They've tried twice, and both times Erica ended it. Time to move on. She doesn't suit Nick either, plus is too old for him too. Nick is my favorite and don't want to watch him kissing just anyone ;)

Her storylines are getting worse. Liz and Erica double act was stupid today. Who did Liz's make up and hair ....it was a disaster. Made her look much older than her years.
This Callum storyline did not make sense as well....keeping Sarah captive in her brothers house? When anyone could walk in. Surely Bethany recognised the curtains. If your going to do something like that i am sure you would limit the possibilities of getting caught and half the platt household walking in. Really disapointed in Corrie today as most of it was not believable. Should have read my book.

I liked the Liz, Erica and Lloyd scenes tonight. It felt like a realistic drunken night in between friends to me.

I really like Erica as an independent woman. I think she works so much better that way than as a one-dimensional adjunct to a man.

(I agree with the rest of your post though Swmc :))

Things will hot up for Erica Holroyd and Dev Alahan on Coronation Street next week, as they share a public kiss and then spend the night together.

Erica will make a beeline for Dev (Jimmi Harkishin) after becoming jealous when he introduces his new date Karen, who he met at the golf club.

Convinced that it's Erica who should be with Dev, Mary soon comes up with a plan to scupper his evening so that her friend can get in there instead.

Mary's scheme goes according to plan and Karen is soon making her excuses to leave, paving the way for Erica to make her move. A dolled-up Erica then approaches Dev and kisses him on the lips in front of everybody!

Claire King, who plays Erica, revealed: "There's an element of nervousness to showing Dev how she feels about him - she's not 25 or even 35 anymore and I think any woman would think there's still that slight doubt this could go badly wrong, and right in the middle of The Rovers as well!

"Erica thinks he's a good egg. He's got a kind heart and they have fun, but she's been backing off from a relationship.

"They've got progressively closer but she has resisted his charms. Now everyone around her is telling her it would be a good thing for them to get together."

Things are slightly more awkward the next day when Dev is cool with Erica, leaving her to wonder where they stand after their night of passion.

The pair then strike up a deal to be "friends with benefits", but is this what they really want?

King said: "Dev shakes Erica's hand the next morning! So she rushes off to The Kabin to buy women's mags to try to work out why he'd shake her hand rather than kiss her. She's a bit bemused by it all.

"Erica would like more and she would like to claim her benefits more often. Dev is holding back, but only because he's not sure what Erica wants. So he asks her outright and Erica has to be honest.

"I think they make a great couple, but that's because they've been friends first."

Claire King is waving goodbye to the cobbles after nearly three years as Erica Holroyd.
The soap favourite, also still fondly remembered for her role as Emmerdale's Kim Tate, will bow out on screen in August.
Claire is leaving Corrie of her own accord to concentrate on other projects and show bosses are currently keeping tight-lipped about how they'll write Erica out, although it's thought that she won't be killed off.
Announcing her decision, Claire explained: "It's been a dream come true to tread those famous cobbles. I was only meant to stay for 6 weeks initially, so for Erica to be so popular that she stayed for 3 years and even worked in The Rovers was a real compliment to me as an actress.
"I've had such a great time with the cast and crew, so it's fabulous that they have left the door open for Erica to return in the future – who knows what adventures she'll be getting up to away from the Street – she's certainly not boring!
"As for me, I'm ready for another challenge. I'm not leaving the screens anytime soon, so watch this space."
Coronation Street's executive producer Kieran Roberts added: "Claire is a wonderful actress and we've loved having her on the show. She's been a great addition to the cast and we wish her every success in the future."
Erica was initially introduced as an old friend of Liz McDonald's, who turned up on the Street after time living away in Spain.
After a brief relationship with Nick Tilsley, Erica settled into another romance with shop owner Dev Alahan – but it's rumoured that there could be trouble ahead for the pair.
Earlier this week, paparazzi pictures sparked speculation that Erica could be heading for an affair with Kevin Webster, who's having relationship trouble with Anna Windass. Could this ultimately be tied in with how Erica leaves the Street?

Is Claire King returning to Emmerdale?

Rumour has it that she's set to make a huge comeback to the Dales after bowing out of Coronation Street.

The actress finished filming her final scenes as Erica Holroyd on the cobbles five weeks ago, and her exit will be aired tomorrow evening (Friday, August 4).

But what's next for the star? Will she be reprising her legendary Kim Tate role?

Speaking on Good Morning Britain earlier today, she said: "It's one of those things, isn't it? I think the rumours started because the family in Emmerdale are moving out and I happen to be leaving Corrie at the same time.

"People have put two and two together I guess – but I will say this, the door to Emmerdale is not locked. So never say never!"

Hinting she won't be appearing on the Dales any time soon however, Claire added: "I'm actually quite busy at the moment. I'm off to do panto in Belfast, which I'm looking forward to as I have a lot of friends there.

"I've also got a film coming out in the autumn called Milk and Honey and I've also got a new TV series and documentary coming out. So, yes, I'm very busy. And whenever I do have some free time to myself, I like to sneak in a trip to Spain."

Claire played Kim Tate in Emmerdale for 10 years between 1989 and 1999. She then joined Coronation Street in 2014.

"Erica was such a different character to what I'm usually perceived as playing," Claire continued. "She was such a natural character and proper Coronation Street – but she's started changing a bit recently!

"Working on Corrie has been amazing – it's such an iconic show. I had a bucket list of jobs that I always wanted to do and Corrie was one of them. I wanted to walk on the cobbles and pour a pint in the Rovers Return – now I've done both!"
