Along with the new castings, it has been confirmed that the McQueen family will lose two of its original members.

Following the announcement that Gemma Merna will bow out of her role as Carmel, Jennifer Metcalfe, who plays Mercedes, has also confirmed her plans to leave the soap.

Both Carmel and Mercedes have been part of the Channel 4 show since 2006, and have been at the centre of several dramatic plots.

Metcalfe recently revealed that the McQueens will soon take centre stage with one of the show's biggest ever storylines.

Hollyoaks introduces new character Lachlan 'Lockie' Campbell this week as he arrives in the village to catch up with his brother Cameron.

Lockie is a fun-loving and opportunistic guy who isn't afraid of pushing the boundaries, so it's no surprise that his first scene sees him causing a stir by kissing Cameron's ex Leela Lomax within moments of meeting her!

The newcomer will also be involved in one of Hollyoaks' biggest ever storylines further on down the line as he takes centre stage in the show's upcoming train crash disaster.

Digital Spy recently caught up with Nick Rhys, who plays Lockie, to hear all the gossip on what's coming up for his character.

How are you settling in at Hollyoaks?
"It's been quite a blast and an experience where I've been thrown in at the deep end. I've been very lucky to be really busy and to get some big storylines straight away. It's been pretty full-on and that's meant learning on the job about how things work here at Lime Pictures, but it's been great fun.

"I've had lots of interesting things to do and everyone at Hollyoaks is lovely. It's because it's such a busy show and it's made in such tight circumstances that everyone clubs together really well. It creates a really nice family atmosphere on set, so everyone has been really great and very welcoming towards me."

When did you first hear about the role?
"It was way back in April that my agent first became aware of the role. I heard that Lockie would be the brother to Cameron and once I was cast, we sat down and really worked through a lot of interesting points about the kind of guy Lockie would be. It was great to have an input into that. Often you get cast into shows and it's a very finalised vision for the character, whereas this was one of the first times that I could have some input and make some suggestions. It was lovely to be listened to.

"One of the nice things is that Lockie is going to be a character who will evolve. He's already a pretty interesting character to begin with, but there'll be even more interesting things on the way for him."

What is Lockie's relationship with Cameron like?
"Lockie and Cameron were put into care at a relatively young age, so they only really had each other to rely on. Once Cameron had the misfortune of going to prison, their relationship was still kept but Lockie went on to have quite an interesting and varied life. He still had time for Cameron, but it was in the final three years of his brother's sentence that Lockie went away and therefore stopped visiting.

"It was also in this time that Lockie and Cameron's mum died. That was a sad moment, especially as they were both ignorant to her illness. So the relationship between the brothers has always been a very strong one, but it did waiver and suffer. The interesting thing now is that their relationship is tentative and they're rebuilding something that was once very deep. It'll be interesting to see how that develops."

Leela kisses Lockie

Your first scenes see Lockie arrive and kiss Leela! What can you tell us about that?
"It was quite a funny thing to enter in on! Lockie arrives in Hollyoaks looking for his brother, but being the hedonist and good-time guy that he is, he finds the local nightclub fairly easily! He goes into The Loft without knowing anyone there, but he takes a shine to Leela. You'll have to wait and see how much of the kiss is Lockie and how much of it is Leela, but it's a great introduction for him.

"It's a short cameo for Lockie at the end of one episode, but then you'll get more of a sense of who he is later on in the following week. It's a great starting point and a snapshot of what Lockie can be like - he's cheeky and can do naughty things, but it's generally mischievous and with a good-natured heart."

We've heard that Lockie is bisexual. Is he open about his sexuality?
"Lockie is very open but I think even if you pushed the character to be called bisexual, he would say that it's more than that - it's just that who he likes is who he likes. He does fall for someone big-time, but he's very relaxed with it and he's above labels in some ways. He's very happy in his own skin."

In his first full week on screen, Lockie tries to sell drugs to Ste. Is he a regular drug dealer?
"Lockie has a task that he wants to get done, so that's the immediate solution that presents itself. I wouldn't be so harsh to say that he's a drug user or a dealer, but he's around that world and it's going to be interesting to see how it plays.

"I don't know myself how far it goes yet, but it doesn't strike me that he's heavily into using or selling drugs. I think it's a case of Lockie being a very opportunistic guy. He's someone who's always going to land on his feet at the end of the day, but the means in which he does that can sometimes be slightly dubious."

Is Lockie going to team up with the other dodgy characters in the village?
"I think he's going to be really interesting. Lockie is an individual character and from what I've seen so far, he doesn't really fit into one category of character. He sometimes can be very funny and a cheeky chappy, but other times he can get mixed up in things that are quite unsavoury.

"I think in general, Lockie is a lover not a fighter. He's from that world, but he does everything with a big smile on his face. Lockie is quite witty and an intelligent guy, but he hides it well! In terms of teaming up, he wouldn't have any qualms about doing business with anyone, as long as it means that he gets what he needs to."

Your first week on screen sees Lockie closely involved with Ste and John Paul. Were you pleased to share some of your first scenes with Kieron Richardson and James Sutton?
"Absolutely. They're both fantastic and I was very lucky to have scenes with those guys. Not only are they really great actors, but they've been on the show for a while, which means that they can really bring me up to speed about the way things are shot and make me feel comfortable.

"As actors, you want to do your best straight away and having those two who are very professional and aware of how the show works was really handy. They're also both very flexible about the way they play scenes, so it's been great."

Lockie is engaged to newcomer Porsche McQueen with their wedding happening soon, so is he intending to settle down after that?
"I think he is planning to. One of the nice things about the character is that, despite his cheeky ways and philandering, he really does seem to genuinely love his wife-to-be. It'd be nice to really explore that and have that bedrock in amongst all of his adventures.

"Lockie loves people and socialising, which can bring a lot of trouble for himself so we'll see how it goes, but the love Lockie has with his partner is very genuine and they're both similar characters. Seeing them clash, go back and forth and have break-ups and make-ups should be very entertaining."

We know that you're closely involved in the train crash episodes, so how did you feel about getting something so massive straight away?
"I felt very flattered and honoured! It's lovely to get something so big based around you so quickly and it's a real show of faith from everyone that they've trusted me to be front and centre.

"The shoot itself was hard but great fun - getting to do the stunts was brilliant. Like a lot of guys, I was a fan of the '80s action films, so getting to do my own stunts among smoke and fire was absolutely fantastic.

"Graeme Harper was the director of the episodes and that was fantastic as he's got a real pedigree for big set pieces like this. It was a great experience, although the dirt element did get to me after a while! It was two weeks solid of being absolutely filthy and ruining the bath when I got home at night!

"It was all worth it, though, because it's going to be unlike anything people have seen on soaps for a while. I'm like a fan myself in that sense, because I can't wait to see it!"

Have you bonded well with your on-screen brother Cameron Moore?
"It's funny when you get cast as brothers, because you really want to get on well with the other actor and develop a bond straight away. You can try as hard as you like, but if you're not the same type of people, it can be hard. The great thing is that Cameron is very, very similar to me. We socialise a lot outside of the show and he's been very helpful towards me when it comes to settling into Liverpool.

"Cameron's great and we're really trying to develop the shorthand that brothers can have. You can argue that brothers on screen are often portrayed as really wisecracking and smart, but sometimes brothers don't need to say much to each other, which is the sign of a really strong bond.

"It's been great that we're both wanting to explore that and how to create a realistic relationship. That's helped by Cameron being a good actor but also the fact that we get along well as mates. It's working well so far and I'm thinking we're going to get some good stuff soon, so it's very exciting to be part of."

Who else have you made friends with on set?
"They're all a really, really friendly bunch. The people you're doing scenes with immediately are the ones you tend to get to know better, but we all get together at lunchtimes and in the green room.

"I'm living very close to Jess Fox and Jeremy Sheffield so we've hung out as well. There seems to be a really collective atmosphere. There's a few Manchester-based actors, but a lot of people are in Liverpool so there are quite a few social occasions. There's no airs or graces, it's just lovely to be together and be welcomed."

You've previously been on the Scottish soap River City, so are there any similarities between working on the two shows?
"There are a lot of similarities. It was fantastic to do River City first, because it's one of the only Scottish fictional dramas around that's in its class. I learned so much from it and it meant that coming to Hollyoaks wasn't really a big leap in terms of the schedules, how much we shoot and how much we can jump from one episode to another in one day. Both shows also involve working with a big cast and multiple directors.

"One thing that probably won't be as challenging is that I've experienced the bad weather of Dumbarton in Glasgow, where River City is filmed! That means I'm steeled for anything when it comes to working outside in the local area here!

"Lockie is a very different character from the one I played on River City, but I'm very proud of my time there and I think it's a fantastic show. It's a nice progression to now come down here to Hollyoaks, play a very different character and be seen by a larger audience."

Lockie Campbell will go missing in suspicious circumstances over the festive season.

Lockie (Nick Rhys) disappears after a tense showdown with his brother Cameron, who could be about to turn back to the dark side in a shock new storyline.

The trouble all centres around Cameron's old flame Leela Lomax (Kirsty-Leigh Porter), who recently decided to flee the village with their daughter Peri.

In the build-up to Christmas, Cameron (Cameron Moore) is delighted to finally get a lead on the pair's whereabouts when he spots Ziggy Roscoe carrying a present wrapped in boyband paper.

Knowing it must be for Peri, Cameron decides to follow Ziggy (Fabrizio Santino) and finds himself at a flat where Leela has been living since leaving Hollyoaks.

Catching up with his estranged wife, Ziggy questions Leela on her treatment of Cameron, but she spitefully insists that Peri doesn't have a dad as far as she's concerned. These could be dangerous words, as Leela is unaware that Cameron can hear everything.

Later, Leela is left alone when Ziggy heads off and Peri goes to meet her on-off boyfriend Tom Cunningham. However, Ziggy soon turns back towards the flat when he realises that he forgot to give Leela the present for Peri.

Ziggy's return wakes Leela up, but she panics when she can smell gas in the flat and realises that she is locked in. Hero of the hour Ziggy tries desperately to kick down the door, but Hollyoaks fans will have to tune in to find out whether he manages to save her or not.

In the aftermath, Lockie is first to smell a rat over the explosion and fears that Cameron must have had something to do with it. Getting tough with his brother, Lockie tells Cameron to leave in the next two hours or he's going to the police with his theory.

Lockie goes AWOL shortly afterwards, but few people question his disappearance as they assume that he has gone off on a cruise with his estranged wife Porsche McQueen.

It's Peri who first realises something is wrong when Porsche's cousin Theresa asks her where Lockie is, making it clear that Lockie isn't with Porsche after all.

When Peri goes to the Tugboat to find some answers, she's horrified to find obvious signs of a struggle - including glass and blood.

We all know families can be a nightmare at Christmas, but the Campbell brothers are taking that to extremes on Hollyoaks this year - with a shocking kidnap plot.

Local lothario Lockie will be spending the festive season tied up in an abandoned shack thanks to his dangerous sibling Cameron, who needs to keep him quiet over an explosion that he caused at Leela Lomax's flat.

Will this be one situation that Lockie can't charm his way out of? Nick Rhys, who plays him, was on hand to spill the gossip in an exclusive Digital Spy chat.

This story has definitely come from left field! Were you surprised when you first heard about it?

"I was very surprised, yes! I think most of the shock is down to the change in Cameron. One thing that's been pretty solid and consistent over my time on Hollyoaks so far is that Cameron and Lockie have always been very close. For something to rock that now is quite a surprise, but it was great for me to have something to really sink my teeth into."

How does Lockie feel about his predicament after Cameron kidnaps him?

"He's absolutely bewildered. He didn't see this coming at all, and I don't think anyone else in the village would have ever expected this from Cameron either. Lockie wonders what the hell is going on."

Does Lockie truly fear Cameron, or does he suspect deep down that his brother won't hurt him?

"It's a mix of both, really. You'll have to watch to see how it unfolds, but for a very long time, Lockie almost has too much faith in his brother. He keeps on thinking that Cameron is going to snap out of this, realise his mistake and make amends. But as time goes on, Lockie sadly and slowly starts to see such a big change in Cameron's mindset.

"Lockie still tries to hope that it's going to be okay, but over time he gets more and more scared. There's real fear there."

What are the conditions like for Lockie?

"He's chained up in a very dank, wet and cold shack. Cameron is coming to check on him very sporadically and giving him enough water to get by. Cameron gives him food too, but that isn't great either.

"In one episode you'll see Lockie eating a cold tin of baked beans, which I had to do myself. I got pretty method on that - and made sure I missed my lunch that day, because I wanted to be as hungry as possible!"

Does Lockie try to negotiate with Cameron?

"He does. Lockie is usually very persuasive in all other walks of life, so he hopes that love will win through and Cameron will see the light. Lockie tries and tries, but Cameron does not seem one for turning..."

After a year playing the rogue, are you pleased to have a story where Lockie will have everyone's sympathy?

"Characters can be painted in quite primary colours in the soap world, but what I've always set out to do with Lockie is make him a bit of a grey area. Wanting my character to be liked isn't something I've really been worried about - I've just always wanted to have a story.

"Of course this will be a more sympathetic story for Lockie and it's going to be an ordeal for him, so maybe he'll gain a whole bunch of fans. But even if he does make it out of this situation, he could easily do something else after it which makes people hate him again!"

How did you feel about your on-screen wife Twinnie-Lee Moore (Porsche) leaving? Did that come as a surprise?

"Twinnie wants to go off and do lots of interesting things, so it didn't come as a surprise - but she left a little bit earlier than I thought she would. I'm sure it's not the last we'll see of each other. It's sad when someone you've shared a lot of screen time with leaves, so it's going to take some getting used to."

Would you like Lockie to change his ways and have a relationship where he's totally faithful?

"I would, as he'd be free to have storylines which are issue-led, rather than having a lot of stuff based around infidelity. Maybe those storylines are what makes Lockie compelling to watch, but there's so much more to him as a character. I think he's vastly untapped.

"Lockie has never really had his own big storyline. He's been part of other people's, so it would be nice to see him have a story that was all his doing."

With that in mind, would you like Hollyoaks to bring in more Campbell family members?

"Of course - I think there's so much possibility there. Cameron and Lockie's mum passed away and that gave them such heartache in their teenage and childhood years. But we don't know much about their dad. If he went on to give them any stepbrothers or stepsisters, there's a lot of potential there. One or two new Scottish actors in the show could be fun as well."

It's no secret that you're dating your co-star Anna Passey in real life. How would you feel if the writers ever put you in a storyline with her character Sienna?

"I think it could be very funny! Sienna doesn't take crap from anyone and I think Lockie has demonstrated many a time that he likes very strong women. Lockie could be the person who could unlock another side of Sienna. Or maybe not, but it could be very explosive either way!

"So far we've never really had a scene together. I think Anna might feel completely differently about it, but I think it could be fun to see what it's like on screen!"

Hollyoaks star Nick Rhys has left the show after a year in the role of Lockie Campbell, Digital Spy can exclusively reveal.

The actor made his final appearance in Monday's E4 first look episode (January 18), which saw Lockie's dark storyline with his villainous brother Cameron come to a head.

Lockie had been held captive in an abandoned shack by Cameron since Christmas, after discovering that his scheming sibling had deliberately caused an explosion which ultimately claimed the life of Ziggy Roscoe.

Things looked up for Lockie when he finally managed to escape, but Cameron soon found a way to discredit him by taking misleading photos showing him in a compromising position.

A defeated Lockie's final scene saw Cameron appear to take pity on his brother by offering to drive him somewhere new. When he refused to go along with it, Cameron angrily chased after him in his car - leaving fans to wonder exactly what Lockie's fate would be.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy today (January 18), Rhys commented: "It's been a great honour and pleasure to help create and play Lockie on Hollyoaks. He arrived in quite literally an explosive fashion! Filming the train crash wedding was a real buzz for me. Getting to do all these stunts and big storylines so early on was brilliant.

"He was a complicated character and seemed to have the ability to get himself both into, and out of trouble, with equal ease. It was fun trying to find that balance.

"I think Lockie's relationship with his brother Cameron was a great part of my enjoyment on the show. I'm lucky to have such a great actor to work with in Cameron Moore, and even luckier to have him as a friend. I'll miss him. I will also miss so many great people on the show. It's been so fun to work with such a talented bunch."

Rhys also paid a touching tribute to his real-life girlfriend Anna Passey, who plays the role of Sienna Blake on the show.

He said: "Of course, the best part for me would be meeting my lovely, talented girl Anna, who is pretty much the best person I've ever met.

"I'll be sad to leave this part. I leave with so many great stories to remember. Lockie's marriage to Porsche and his subsequent antics with the rest of the McQueen family come to mind!

"Finally, thanks to the fans who have been so positive and supportive of me and the character - I'm glad you've enjoyed him. For better or worse, he always kept you on your toes!"

Rhys joined the Hollyoaks cast in late 2014, with Lockie causing an immediate stir with his constant cheating. He previously played the role of Leo Brodie on Scottish soap River City.
