Maisie Smith is set to leave EastEnders after playing Tiffany Butcher for more than five years

EastEnders bosses have today (July 20) confirmed that young cast members Maisie Smith and Devon Higgs will be leaving the show.

The child actors, who play Tiffany and Morgan Butcher, will bow out on screen in the autumn alongside their on-screen mother Patsy Palmer (Bianca).

Palmer announced her decision to leave EastEnders in April after six years back on screen as Bianca. She has played the character on and off since 1993.

Digital Spy understands that while show chiefs are sad to see Smith and Higgs leave after six years, they felt the decision was right for the Butcher family as Bianca would never leave her youngest children behind.

As previously announced, Bianca's love interest Terry Spraggan - played by actor and comedian Terry Alderton - will also be leaving EastEnders.

Terry's own children TJ and Rosie will be departing with him, but EastEnders producers are keeping tight-lipped about whether Terry and Bianca will be leaving the Square together or separately following their on-off relationship.

An EastEnders spokesperson told DS: "We don't comment on storylines as we don't want to ruin it for the fans. However, we can confirm that the characters Bianca, Tiffany, Morgan, Terry, TJ and Rosie will be leaving the show later this year."

Bianca's eldest son Liam (James Forde) and stepdaughter Whitney (Shona McGarty) will remain in the show after Bianca's exit.

She is known for playing Bianca Butcher's young daughter on EastEnders, but Maisie Smith is barely recognisable a year on from leaving the show.

The 14-year old actress has been posting several pictures on her Instagram page, showing a rather grown-up transformation.

The dramatic change in Smith's appearance has surprised soap fans, with many saying they can't see the resemblance to her former alter ego Tiffany Butcher.

Smith joined EastEnders in 2008 when she was just 7 years old.

She was last seen on screen in September as Tiffany bowed out of Walford for a new life in Milton Keynes with her mother Bianca.

To be honest, she was starting to look too old for the part in her last year (though it was made worse by makeup putting Tiffany in actual makeup when the character was only supposed to be 11.) She was a very natural actress and I hope she returns when she and Tiffany are older and the age difference between actor and character hopefully won't show as much.

EastEnders has announced that Maisie Smith is returning to the show as Whitney Carter's sister Tiffany Butcher.

The actress is already back filming with the BBC soap and will reappear on our screens as Tiffany in the New Year.

Tiffany – who is the daughter of Bianca and Ricky Butcher – left Walford with her mum back in 2014, returning briefly for Whitney's wedding last year.

Bosses are keeping tight-lipped on what brings Tiffany back from Milton Keynes this time, but one thing is for sure – she won't be returning quietly.

Tiffany is set to instantly cause chaos when she lands on Whitney's doorstep next year, but why has she returned? And how will she settle back into Walford?

Speaking about reprising the role, Maisie said: "It's great to be back on the set of EastEnders. It's been lovely to see some old faces and meet new ones too. I can't wait to show everyone how much Tiffany has changed."

Since leaving the show, Maisie has been busy concentrating on her music career, having released her debut single 'Good Thing'.
