Coronation Street bosses have cast two more members of Kal Nazir's family.

Shelley King has landed the role of Kal's mother Yasmeen, while Shameless actor Qasim Akhtar has signed up to play the gym owner's teenage son Zeedan.

Both new arrivals will make their first appearances in the summer, completing the Nazir clan.

Kal, played by Jimi Mistry, joined the cast of Coronation Street late last year and show chiefs later announced their plans to bring in his family.

Marc Anwar is already appearing on screen as Kal's father Sharif, while actress Sair Khan will arrive in Weatherfield next month as Kal's daughter Alya.

Upcoming storylines will see Kal juggling the demands of his extended family, who have been tipped to cause him problems as he tries to settle down with love interest Leanne Tilsley (Jane Danson).

King's previous credits include roles in the TV series Tandoori Nights, West End musical Bombay Dreams and various theatre productions.

Akhtar played Chesney Karib in Shameless between 2007 and 2013.

Coronation Street's new recruit Qasim Akhtar makes his first appearance on the soap next week as he takes on the role of Zeedan Nazir.

Show bosses announced in May that the former Shameless actor had been cast as Zeedan, who is the teenage son of existing regular Kal.

Zeedan arrives on screen as Steve McDonald's new Rovers Return cricket team head out for their first practice session.

Steve has been nervous about the challenges ahead for his hastily-arranged team, but things seem to be looking up for him when Zeedan proves to be a brilliant cricketer!

Kal's son Zeedan arrives

In his recent interview with Digital Spy, Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn confirmed that Kal has a lot of ground to make up with Zeedan.

He explained: "There's not a dark side to him, but his relationship with Kal is incredibly difficult. Zeedan was brought up for most of his life by his mother and his grandparents, because his dad was away in the army.

"What Zeedan experienced as a young lad was absence, which he's really angry about. His mother died a couple of years back, but when she was alive, Zeedan would have seen her sitting staring at the television and sobbing terrified whenever there were reports from Afghanistan.

"There's a lot of anger in Zeedan as he questions why his dad wasn't with him."

Coronation Street airs these scenes on Friday, September 5 at 7.30pm on ITV.

Do not like the mum but hope the grandson character is ok. I like the father but not impressed with Kal as he is boring. Most families take a while to fit into the street. But they never get it right with Asian families!

Coronation Street newcomer Qasim Akhtar makes his first appearance on the soap this week as he takes on the role of Kal Nazir's son Zeedan.

Zeedan gets to know the Weatherfield locals when he joins Steve McDonald's new Rovers Return cricket team, but he shows a less friendly side to his personality when he is cold towards Kal's new girlfriend Leanne Tilsley.

Here, Qasim reveals all about his first scenes and what's ahead for Zeedan.

What can you tell us about Zeedan?
"Zeedan has been brought up by his grandparents. His dad has been in the army for 16 years, so Zeedan and his dad don't have the best relationship. That's what you'll see when he first comes into the show.

"That's not so much to do with Leanne, it's more to do with the fact that his father figure is his granddad. He's grown up seeing his father being a completely different person to his granddad, so his attitude to his dad is, 'I don't want to be anything like this guy'.

"Zeedan is also very overprotective over his sister Alya. He's meant to be a bit of a cool kid - he likes his clothes, he likes his trainers."

He must have also been hit hard by his mother's death.
"Yeah, he was. That's another thing with Leanne - I think that's what's getting to him more than anything. It's not just a religious thing that means he's so against the fact that Kal is seeing Leanne, there's a lot more depth than that. He doesn't want anyone to replace his mother.

"It's upsetting for Zeedan to see his dad and Leanne together, because growing up he never saw his mum and dad together much with Kal being away all the time. It's building up so much anger inside him that the audience don't see, but people will start to realise what's actually wrong. Maybe there is a soft side to him and there are reasons why he's doing what he's doing."

When do we first see Zeedan?
"The first time we see him is at the cricket practice with the Rovers Return's new team."

What happens when the day of the match itself arrives?
"They turn up at the cricket ground and everything's going smoothly. Then there's a scene with Alya and Zeedan and she's telling him that she's happy he's there. Zeedan points out to her that he's not sucking up to his dad's girlfriend, but at that point she's already rung Leanne and told her to come down to the cricket match and bond with the family.

"Leanne turns up and Zeedan has a big argument with her. He goes inside, throws his bat down and nearly messes things up for the team!"

Does Zeedan realise that he's upsetting his dad by being so negative about Leanne?
"I think he does, but at this moment in time he doesn't care. I think that's his goal. He'd be happy if his dad went and said to Leanne that they couldn't be together anymore and he'd think his mission was accomplished. He's being a bit selfish but there are reasons for why he's being that person. I think there's so much more for me to learn about Zeedan."

Aside from his family, who else will Zeedan connect with?
"I think it's going to be Gary. There was quite a nice scene that me and Mikey [North, who plays Gary] did in the pavilion after Zeedan throws his bat down. Gary comes in and he speaks to him about what his dad was like when he was in the army, but Zeedan doesn't want to hear it - he doesn't care. However, it's quite a nice scene creating a relationship between them, so it's the start of something."

Can you tell us more about the relationship between Zeedan and his grandfather Sharif?
"Obviously with Sharif being his father figure growing up, Zeedan takes after him. He's a cool granddad and in real life I love Marc [Anwar, who plays Sharif] as well as a person. He's made me feel really at home in the last four weeks and I could actually call him my granddad."

How did the part of Zeedan come about for you?
"I'd just come out of Shameless and I thought I wanted to continue in dramas and films. In February, I hadn't worked for 11 months. I was starting to feel a little bit down about things and my mum could see that. It was almost like it was meant to be, as my mum said to me, 'Do you know what I'd love? If you got a part in Coronation Street'.

"At the time I didn't think anything of it, and then literally three weeks after she said that she'd seen a casting for Coronation Street for a young Asian lad. Next thing you know, two weeks later my agent is ringing me saying he's got an audition for me for Coronation Street.

"At first I wasn't sure, but I knew it would make my mum so happy because she's literally been a fan of the show for over 20 years. Then as soon as I'd been to the first audition and spoken to the casting director and the character, I knew how much I wanted the role."

Was your mum the first person you told when you got the part?
"I was at a mate's house around the corner from mine when I got the call, but I ran home instantly. I told my mum and she literally broke down in tears and started crying her eyes out. I got on the phone to everybody - I was ringing all my mates and telling everyone."

Who did you know in the cast before you started?
"I knew Brooke Vincent a bit because I'd seen her out and about and Ryan Thomas as well because I'm good mates with his brother, but I haven't really had much time to speak to them. Marc Anwar and Jimi Mistry have made me feel so comfortable. Jimi, from day one, made me feel like I'd been there for so long. The relationship just clicked straight away."

What's it like working with all the other members of the family?
"The casting has been so great for the family. We've all got something there that brings us together and makes us look like an actual family, so I think it's been really well cast."

Will you watch your first episode?
"One hundred million percent! I can't wait and I'm so excited. I think anyone who says that they hate watching themselves is lying. I'll be sitting with my mum, my brother and my little sister. Everyone will probably come round and we'll just sit down and watch it."

Are you prepared for what comes with it?
"I've been acting since I was 13 so it's nothing new to me, but I know that being on a soap there's a lot more media attention. I guess it's just going to be what I've already experienced, but times 10 or 100!"

Another Coronation Street romance bites the dust next week as Zeedan Nazir dumps his girlfriend Rana.
When the racy newcomer arrived on the cobbles actress Bhavna Limbachia, who plays her, warned that she had the ability to break hearts, and it seems it’s Zeedan’s on the chopping block.
Next week she plays a game of hot and cold with him by first coming on strong and then ignoring his calls and giving him the cold shoulder.
When Zeedan confides in his sister that he may have blown it with Rana as she’s ignoring his calls, Alya is annoyed that her friend is treating him so badly and warns him he’s being taken for a mug.
Later, when Zeedan clocks Rana flirting with one of the doctors outside the medical centre, he heads over and quickly introduces himself as her boyfriend.
Her behaviour starts to grate on him and Rana is knocked for six when she heads to No 6 where Zeedan dumps her, telling her she’s a flirt and he won’t be messed around.
Rana tries to win him back by roping in Alya but when Zeedan explains that she’s a game player and got what she deserved, his sister is impressed – but can Rana work her way back into his life?

Coronation Street's Zeedan Nazir is baffled tonight (September 21) as his sister Alya warns that there could be a romantic spark between their grandfather Sharif and family friend Sonia. If only he knew she was bang on the money...

Alya (Sair Khan) has been watching Sharif and Sonia very closely recently and the situation is far more serious than even she realises, as the Nazir family's patriarch has actually been cheating on his wife Yasmeen for seven years.

With fireworks ahead for the family, Digital Spy recently caught up with Qasim Akhtar – who plays Zeedan – for the inside scoop.

The Nazir family are certainly being thrust into the spotlight with this storyline.

"Yeah, definitely. It's good that as a family we've got some drama to really get our teeth stuck into. It means we can work together and really do some meaty scenes.

"It's always been a bit slow, but we're picking up now and we've got some good stuff coming up. Hopefully everyone who sees it will appreciate it as much as we've enjoyed doing it."

How does Zeedan react when Alya warns that Sharif might be having an affair?

"Initially Zeedan doesn't want to hear it. He thinks it's all a load of rubbish. Obviously Sharif is pretty much his father figure, so Zeedan doesn't think that he'd ever do something like that. As far as he's concerned, Sharif is his grandfather and he's perfect.

"For Alya to make this accusation that Sharif is having an affair is quite a big thing for him. He almost immediately dismisses it, but of course it's actually the truth."

So how would Zeedan feel if he knew it really was the truth?

"Script-wise, we can only see so far ahead, so I don't know exactly how it's going to pan out over the next few months. But initially when Zeedan finds out, there's a lot of anger and there's a lot of questions to be asked. There's a lot of answers that he wants about what's been going on.

"Because Zeedan is the only guy left for Yasmeen, he's also going to be the one who has to look after her. He'll be the go-to guy, basically."

How did you all react as an on-screen family when the story cropped up? The fans were quite surprised by Sharif's seven-year affair.

"We were all just exactly like the fans. We were just as surprised, because we didn't expect anything like that to happen. Sharif has always been Mr Perfect and it's been like he can't do anything wrong. So the fact that he'd been having an affair for seven years and nobody had known about it, was kind of a shock for us!"

Do you hope the family can somehow make it through this?

"Yeah definitely – I hope they do 100%. People go through issues and problems all the time in their lives, and the only way to make them better is to work through them."

Does the story also have the potential to run for quite a while?

"Absolutely. I hope it does, because it can spiral off into other things. It can maybe give Zeedan some firepower to go off and do what he wants to do. Maybe he can use that as fuel to do something out of the ordinary that maybe he wouldn't usually do."

What do you make of Zeedan's romance with Rana?

"For me as a person and for the character it's been perfect. Zeedan has been through so much heartache in his life, but now he's finally got somebody coming into his life who makes him happy. I think he wants to hold onto that with both hands and not let it go. Let's hope they have the potential to stay together.

"Bhavna Limbachia, who plays Rana, is lovely too. We get along and we have a laugh together. She teases me and I tease her all the time."

Looking back, were you worried for the future of the Nazir family when your on-screen dad Jimi Mistry left the show last year?

"I was gutted more than worried. I was disappointed because just as Jimi left and his character died, they started to really build a good relationship with Kal and Zeedan.

"When Jimi told me that he was going, I was really upset because we had a really good relationship – both on screen and off screen. On-screen he was my dad, but off-screen he was like my older brother. Him leaving didn't worry me, but it did make me feel a bit upset."

yasmen should hire adam to sue tracy and carla for the fire that killed cal

One thing that irks me is that when Carla discovered the fire was Tracys fault not her own, she said that she was gonna get justice for maddie and cal but that was the last it was mentioned again. I'm pretty sure the Nazir family didnt take action themselves because legally it was tracys word against carlas and couldn't be proven so shariff said to yasmeen who wanted to sue that they just need to move on for the sake of the family

Coronation Street spoilers: Is Yasmeen Nazir seriously ill?
Coronation Street could be lining up an illness storyline for Yasmeen Nazir as her grandson Zeedan begins to fear that she is suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. The concerning developments come as Zeedan finds some unusual medication in his gran’s handbag.
Worried, he googles the name of the pills and is shocked to discover that they are prescribed for MS. As he and Alya confront Yasmeen over their findings, she reassures them that she just takes the medicine for stress.
But while they are relieved that she hasn’t been diagnosed with MS, they feel guilty about the strain she is feeling and begin to realise that their ongoing feud could be the cause of her distress.
As they agree to bury the hatchet at last, will this help to ease Yasmeen’s stress?
And is she being entirely honest about what her pills are for?

Coronation Street's Zeedan and Rana Nazir look set to walk down the aisle again in an upcoming storyline.

Qasim Akhtar and Bhavna Limbachia, who play Zeedan and Rana, have been spotted filming on location today (September 18) for some exciting wedding scenes which will air later in the year.

Paparazzi photographers caught the pair working alongside Qasim's on-screen grandmother Shelley King, who plays Yasmeen Nazir.

Zeedan's sister Alya (Sair Khan) is also one of the guests, bringing along her boyfriend Luke Britton (Dean Fagan) as her plus-one.

Zeedan and Rana already tied the knot last year in Corrie's first ever Muslim wedding.

The new pictures reveal that they'll now be going ahead with a legal confirmation of the wedding at the local registry office, cementing their future as a couple.

While this seems like good news on face value, Corrie's producer Kate Oates recently revealed that there's a surprise relationship coming up between Rana and her friend Kate Connor.

This explains why Rana has seemed so unwelcoming towards Kate's new girlfriend Imogen Pascoe, but what does it mean for her future with Zeedan? Could this wedding end in tears?

Speaking at a Coronation Street press day recently, Kate Oates confirmed: "We've got a new romance bubbling for Kate and Rana which may take a few interesting turns."

CORONATION STREET viewers are about to witness a dark plot twist in upcoming ITV scenes as Zeedan Nazir steps up his obsession with Kate and Rana. But how far will he take his stalking?

New Coronation Street filming pictures reveal Zeedan (played by Qasim Akhtar) trying to photograph Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) and Kate Connor (Faye Brookes) as they enjoy a game of pool.

Shocked, Rana (Bhavna Limbachia) spots him and drags him away from the window.

The spoiler photos look as though Sophie and Kate are getting things together as they celebrate their pool table win.

The love triangle is becoming complicated as Zeedan is trying to break up Kate and Rana.

Secretly filming them on a day out with Sophie, he seems to be trying to capture incriminating videos.

Furious Rana will be seen to confront him when the episode airs and have a huge row before storming off.

Kate and Sophie get their own back and will begin to film Zeedan themselves. What could Zeedan really be plotting?

Rana actress Bhavna revealed she is hoping Corrie bosses create a wedding for her character.

She explained: “We hope so. They've already been through so much to be together.

“They've been fighting their feelings. I hope they will be [happy].

“They genuinely do love each other. Rana doesn't want to label her sexuality.”

Bhavna continued to Digital Spy: “As far as she's concerned, she's fallen in love with somebody who happens to be a woman.

So hopefully they are together. We'd love to see a big, fat gay Muslim wedding.”

It comes after last night’s episode saw villain Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre) discover that his plans to escape Weatherfield with his earnings were about to come crumbling down, along with the concrete pillars where he had hidden his dead bodies.

Phelan was visited by project manager of the Legacy Reach Paper Mill development Mona Beattie (Rachel Logan).

Mona refused to pay him for his workmanship as the concrete pillars were “set at the wrong temperature” and were starting to crumble, meaning they will need to be demolished.

Will Phelan’s bodies be discovered, or will he manage to concoct a new plan?

Kate is showing her true colours now ... an absolute nut case. Rana has nowhere to go support wise for sound advice. Kate is turning psycho with jealousy and zeedan just wants to go back to how it was, and Kate has well and truly stitched rana up over her family.

All rana has is psycho Kate and poor zeedan .... I don't think she truly loves Kate.... she just sees her as the only support system she has. If she sticks with Kate... and Kate will make sure of that... she played the emotional manipulative game ...this is emotional bullying and can turn very dangerous very quickly

Coronation Street star Qasim Akhtar has spoken about his exit from the show for the first time.

The ITV soap announced in March that Qasim had decided to leave the cobbles and we'll see his final scenes air later this month.

Revealing the reasons behind his choice to go, Qasim explained: "When I first started here, in my mind I told myself that I would like to do three years at Coronation Street and then see what happens from there. By the time I leave, I will have done four years so I got another year out of it.

"I've always been really ambitious and I still have that fire and hunger in my belly where I want to explore and do other projects. Because I am seeing so much more diversity in shows nowadays and the pressure that shows have got to introduce more Asian and black actors into things, I feel like it's a great time for me to be out there.

"Just talking for myself, in the position I am in – being young and not having major commitments in my life – if there is ever a time to do it, it's now."

He continued: "It was a hard decision for me to make because I became really comfortable here, but I thought to myself, 'I would rather go away from the show, try to prosper and do different things'.

"It has always been a dream of mine to go to America and work out there, so I'd rather go away and if things didn't work out I would just be like 'oh well'. But I would rather say 'oh well' than 'what if?'"

Qasim confirmed that Corrie bosses have decided not to kill off the character of Zeedan, which leaves the door open for a possible return.

He said: "I am so happy because that puts you in such a great position as an actor as well. I take it as a compliment and I am very grateful because I like to believe that there will always be a place for me here in the future.

"I am going to miss everyone. I am going to miss the people, I am going to miss the company. I'll miss the routine and I'll miss the canteen upstairs, but more than anything I'll miss the people because I have made some lifelong friends in this place."

I cannot stand Alya. How can two siblings be so different. She is selfish and mean.

Coronation Street's Yasmeen Metcalfe is no longer living in fear of her evil husband Geoff, after he fell to his death in December, but that doesn't mean that the story ends there.

There is a lot of trauma that Yasmeen (Shelley King) needs to heal from, and the soap's executive producer Iain MacLeod has now shared more about what's next for Yasmeen as she continues to face the impact of Geoff's abuse and manipulative behaviour.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media outlets as he teased the storylines coming up in 2021, MacLeod said that the soap was "very keen to reflect the real-world experiences that people like Yasmeen go through".

"Alya told her gran that it was over, but actually, it's not. The psychological impact of abusive relationships can last forever," MacLeod continued.

"There's also the practical side of what happened to Yasmeen. We know that Geoff was embezzling money from Yasmeen and taking out loans in her name, without her knowledge.

"A lot of that will come home to roost for Yasmeen, in a way that threatens to destabilise her recovery from what she's been through."

MacLeod also added that there will be "a ray of light" in Yasmeen's story too as Elaine Jones (Paula Wilcox) will play a "pivotal role in Yasmeen's recovery".

"The Elaine story will be a bit of a ray of light for Yasmeen," he shared. "Paula Wilcox is absolutely fantastic. Elaine played a pivotal role in the trial and she will also play a pivotal role in Yasmeen's recovery.

"They'll have an 'odd couple' friendship, and thankfully for Yasmeen it will be quite humorous in places. They're survivors of Geoff and trying to find their way as a double act," he added.

"So there'll be some light stuff for Yasmeen to play, but overall it's going to be a heartbreaking next chapter for her."

MacLeod has revealed a load more plot points about Corrie stories, and there's set to be a lot of heartbreak and tragedy in store for characters like Nina Lucas and Peter Barlow, while the Bailey family will be gaining a new member who will bring both humour and chaos to the cobbles too.

Coronation Street has revealed how Zeedan Nazir will make his cobbles comeback, with his arrival coinciding with his sister Alya Nazir making a massive mistake.

In scenes to air next week, excited Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) will announce to Alya (Sair Khan) that grandson Zeedan (Qasim Akhtar), who was last seen on the cobbles in 2018, is coming to stay for her birthday. Elaine Jones (Paula Wilcox) also calls round to help celebrate the special occasion.

Later in the week, Alya faces a stressful situation when the food delivery is late at Speed Daal while she's working. As Elaine tries to calm the angry diners, Alya attempts to juggle phone calls with both the delivery driver and the bank.

The delivery eventually arrives but that isn't the end of Alya's problems. She is horrified when a customer points out that there is a tarantula crawling across one of the restaurant's tables, having escaped from a boy's rucksack.

The rest of the diners flee, with Alya trying to remain calm as she helps the boy search for his missing pet. The spider is finally caught, but there's yet more trouble in store for Alya.

After checking the business bank account, Alya tearfully tells Elaine that Yasmeen has somehow managed to empty it.

But it turns out that the empty bank account wasn't Yasmeen's doing, and the call that Alya took from the bank earlier on was actually from a fraudster who has cleared out the account.

Desperate Alya leaves Zeedan a voicemail, admitting to him that she has been scammed out of thousands of pounds and she has no idea what to do to try to fix the situation.

As Zeedan arrives at Speed Daal, Alya is forced to explain her horrible mistake to Yasmeen. Zeedan offers to transfer ?50,000 to the Speed Daal account to keep the business tided over ? but will Alya and Yasmeen accept the offer?

It has already been revealed that Alya will have her suspicions about Zeedan's new-found wealth, and her worries will intensify when Zeedan is attacked on the street. Could Zeedan be in serious trouble himself?

Actor Qasim has said that he is "excited to be back" on the cobbles, promising that we can expect to see him involved in "an explosive storyline".

Coronation Street actor Shelley King has quit the cobbles after 11 years.

According to The Sun, the soap star, best known for playing Yasmeen Metcalfe, filmed her final scenes in Weatherfield in December, with her exit scenes set to air sometime in March.

While King is yet to publicly address her exit, a TV insider told the publication that her decision to leave was down to the actor wanting to "explore other projects".

"Shelley spoke to producers early last year and advised that after 10 years on the show and being involved in many major storylines during the past decade she had decided the time has come for her to explore other opportunities," says a soap insider.

King joined the soap back in 2014 as Yasmeen alongside husband Sharif Nazir (Marc Anwar) but their 45-year marriage ended not long after, when Yasmeen discovered Sharif's affair with her friend Sonia Rahman.

She then went on to date local radio DJ Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew), with the two marrying in Las Vegas. After the nuptials, the relationship turned abusive with Geoff proving to be emotionally and physically controlling.

In 2020, in a dramatic climax to the storyline, Yasmeen was held at knifepoint by Geoff and ended up retaliating and stabbing Geoff in the neck, leaving him to bleed. She was arrested and charged for manslaughter but later found not guilty.

Geoff eventually died after falling off the roof of the couple's house in another showdown with Yasmeen.

King's exit follows amid several over Coronation Street departures, including Charlotte Jordan, Colson Smith and long-standing cast member Sue Cleaver.

Actor Luca Toolan also made his last appearance as Mason Radcliffe last week, who died after being stabbed by his brothers Matty and Logan. The pair discovered he'd helped the police to gather evidence linking them to the death of DS Lisa Swain's wife Becky.
