here is a topic for WQ to approve of..it isnt a poll
is Pauline fowler really that bad? (Discuss)

No she isn't, she is very misunderstood. She is a really good character in theory.
she is a legendary and inconicn eastend matriach, who echoes that of her mother lou, she has had some great stories over the years and following the death of arthur she has slowly begun to loose her family and so keeps a tight grip on those who are still there: martin
her moaning and over-protetcion in recent years hasnt done her many favours but i believe it is bevasue she is a sad and lonely old lady who fears loosing martin and being a sad old spinster

I do sometimes feel sorry for Pauline because she does seem very lonely. However, I think she goes about fixing her problems in completely the wrong ways.

she acts just like lou, and times have now changed
everyone would listen to the matriach then...but now people are indepednant and wont be told what to do by their parents
martin dosent understand why pauline is so protetcive or him, and so this is why he gets annoyed

She's a good character in the fact that she has a view on everything thats going on in the square, and you can get a different view than you own to some effect from Pauline.
Unfortunatly she has become a bit desperate by trying to hang on to Martin, which to some extent you can understand as he is the only child left. Also you have to remember most people are related to the fowlers by marriage etc.
But hey love her or loath her, she's here to stay for the immediate future!!

To be fair to the legend that was Lou Beale long before your time she was a bit more classic than Pauline, she used to storm about the place like a bear with a sore head and woe betide you if you crossed her.

:rotfl: Lets face it folks,,, we love to hate her !!! And as much as she annoys the heck out of me, I wouldn't wanna see her gone...:moonie:
It would be a nightmare to lose a character who is sooo in touch with the roots of the show.

Only Ian. However Pauline was pregnant with Martin in the first episode and Dot arrived back in 1985 just a matther of months after the show started.
It has quite a few cast members who have been there years and years actually.

Sharon has been there since the start as well, though she has had quite a few long breaks so don't know if she counts.
She's not had a full 20 year run though only Pauline and Ian have.
