The BRIT Awards with MasterCard at The O2 in London – the UK’s most prestigious music awards show – returns in 2014 with a stellar line-up of performances from Arctic Monkeys, Bastille, Rudimental, Bruno Mars, Pharrell and Nile Rogers and Rudimental, Disclosure, Ellie Goulding, Lorde and Katy Perry to name a few.
This year’s nominations reveal new British music largely dominating the categories.
Topping the list of nominations this year and flying the flag for British music are electronic music duo Disclosure and four piece rock band Bastille, who both appear in four different categories, with both their respective debut albums reaching Number 1 in the UK chart as well as receiving critical acclaim across the pond in America. In contrast, David Bowie is nominated 30 years after winning his first BRIT award.
Sam Smith was this year’s winner of the coveted Critics’ Choice, following in the successful footsteps of those who have gone before him, who include Adele, Florence & The Machine, Ellie Goulding, Jessie J, Emeli Sande and Tom Odell.
Reflecting the growing popularity of social media, a new award has been added this year in the form of Best British Video. This will give viewers of the BRITs the chance to vote for the award live on the night. A shortlist of five videos based on YouTube views will be announced prior to the night itself.
The show will be hosted once again by James Corden. It will be his fifth time in the role, making him the show’s longest serving host.
