Coronation Street bosses have announced that Les Dennis is joining the soap's cast.
http://i1.cdnds.net/14/04/618x718/soaps-coronation-street-les-dennis.jpg

The actor and comedian has signed up for the role of wayward character Michael Rogers, who is a petty criminal.

Show chiefs are keeping quiet about the full storyline details, but have confirmed that Michael will be caught up in the lives of one Weatherfield family after breaking into their home.

Speaking of his new role, Dennis commented: "I am so thrilled to be joining the cast of Coronation Street. It has always been my favourite television programme, mixing high drama with some of the best comedy on screen.

"I've loved it since the beginning. I grew up watching all the amazing characters in the show. I now not only have the chance of meeting them, but also working with them. It doesn't get better than that."

Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn added: "Les is a fantastic performer and a real coup for Corrie. I can't wait for him to join the team."

Dennis will start filming at Coronation Street on Monday (January 27) and appear on screen from March.

The 60-year-old is best known for presenting gameshow Family Fortunes for 15 years, but has also worked on a number of theatre shows. He is currently touring in the Peter James play A Perfect Murder.

His previous soap projects have included roles in Brookside, Family Affairs and Crossroads.

Coronation Street's Gail McIntyre is being lined up as a love interest for Les Dennis's character, according to reports.

It was announced last month that the actor and comedian has signed up for the role of wayward character Michael Rogers, who is a petty criminal.

Les Dennis on Coronation Street role: 'It's beyond my wildest dreams'

Michael will arrive in Weatherfield next month and burgle Gail's house, The Mirror reports.

However, Michael will then turn up again in the summer to try and make amends with Gail (Helen Worth) as part of a restorative justice storyline.

The restorative justice scheme involves people who have admitted crimes meeting their victims or making amends by doing some sort of remedial work.

Coronation Street will air Michael's first scenes in March.

Coronation Street airs Les Dennis's first scenes on the cobbles next week as he takes on the role of petty criminal Michael Rogersl.

Michael initially appears on screen for two episodes as he breaks into the Platt family's home, but he will be back on a more permanent basis in the summer after he is confronted by Gail in a restorative justice storyline.

Here, Les chats about his new role, what fans can expect from Michael, and why people are still asking about his Mavis Riley impression!

As you're such a big Corrie fan, is joining the show a dream come true?
"It is absolutely a dream come true for me. I've loved Corrie since I was a kid and I've watched it from the very beginning. So many people on Twitter have said, 'Are you going to come in as Mavis's long-lost cousin?!'

"The Vera and Mavis thing started when I was in Russ Abbot's show with Dustin Gee in 1982. Now so many years later, it's great to have the dream come true and join the Street as an actor."

Is it challenging to make that transition?
"It's something that I've worked at - to change perceptions. It's a difficult thing to be taken seriously as an actor when you've been a gameshow host for 15 years and on comedy sketch shows.

"I've built up an acting CV, but if you're in the corner of somebody's room as one thing, it takes the country a long time to realise that you can do something else. This is a great opportunity - I'm just really thrilled to be in the best soap in a new role."

Does it feel like the right time for a role like this?
"Well, my family and I have just moved to Cheshire. My wife Claire and I got to the stage where we wanted to get out of London, because our families are up north. Then I got Spamalot in the West End and feared that moving away was the biggest mistake that I'd made, because I wouldn't be with the family.

"Then Corrie came. It's like 'build it and he will come'. We moved up north and then the job came. It's fantastic and I'm still a bit shellshocked by it."

Les's first scene sees him break into the Platt house

How's it all going so far?
"So far I've filmed my first two scenes for the first two episodes. Joining the show was a bit of a whirlwind. I got the call from my agent on a Monday as I was driving and was asked, 'Would you be interested in Coronation Street?' I just pulled the car up and said 'Yes, yes, yes!'

"The screen test was the following Monday, with Helen Worth and a full crew. Then the following Monday I was running down the cobbles for my first scenes. That was awe-inspiring enough, but when I go into The Rovers, The Kabin and places like that for the first time, I'm going to feel like the kid in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!"

After your famous impression, are you looking forward to a scene in the Kabin with Rita?
"Well, the funny thing is that my Mavis never met Rita! Dustin Gee played Vera, so we put an unlikely couple from the Street together as friends. Vera and Mavis would never really have been friends. They probably had some scenes but were never really connected.

"I am looking forward to going into the Kabin and talking to Rita, though! It's on YouTube that Thelma Barlow does actually say to Rita one time, 'I don't really know!' She used to say to me that she used to get scripts and say, 'I can't say this as it's a Les Dennis line!'"

Do you have a favourite Corrie character?
"I love them all. Being a comic, I love the comedy characters like Norris and Roy. David Neilson is an amazing actor but he also plays a funny character.

"I love all of the characters, but I think the interaction between the younger and older characters is brilliant. Corrie is a soap that deals with amazing issues like Hayley's suicide, but then you can move from that and go to a scene in the pub with Rita and Norris which makes you laugh. That's what I love about the Street - it juxtaposes the serious and the comedic."

The man pushes past Gail.

Will Michael have funny elements to him?
"I don't know yet! At the moment I just know that it's a restorative justice storyline. Michael isn't a career burglar - he just thinks that the Platts' house is empty, so nobody will get hurt as they'll be insured. But it all goes wrong when Gail interrupts him and she's left quite frightened by the experience.

"Later on, Michael has the chance to apologise to Gail. After that, maybe the Platt family will be thinking that Gail has chosen badly again - even in the friendship stakes! I remember that in the character breakdown, it said that Michael often hides things that are going on in his life with a joke. He's down on his luck and upset with his family, so there's everything to play."

Would you like Michael to be funny?
"I don't want to go in and say, 'Here's the comic'. I'm doing a play at the moment called The Perfect Murder and the biggest compliment I can get is when audiences say, 'For the first five minutes we were aware that you were Les Dennis, but then we just saw you as your character Victor'."

Gray O'Brien, who played Tony Gordon, is in the same play. Has he given you any advice?
"Gray O'Brien was Gail with me for a week! He did the scenes with me over and over again so that I could go off-book. I think that then helped me in the screen test, because I didn't need pages and I did it exactly as if we were filming the scene.

"Gray was brilliant and he even did Gail's accent! At the time, he was staying in our house over the weekend, because on the Monday we had to go to Norwich together for the play. I had the screen test at ITV first, so he came with me and sat in the car outside!"

Once you were confirmed for the role, what was it like to step onto the Street?
"I was thinking, 'I don't know if I'm allowed to take photos!' I wanted to behave myself, even though I really wanted one! In the end somebody said that I could take a photo, so I've got one picture of myself outside The Rovers, which I was thrilled to do.

"What was really weird about my first day was that because Corrie is at the new studio, I was asking the other actors where things were and they were saying, 'I don't know!' because it was their first day as well. Everyone was as disorientated as me!

Do you describe your main career as 'actor' now?
"I used to put 'entertainer' on my passport, which is a bit cheesy! I now put 'actor' and I do that confidently. I had a review recently which said, 'Les Dennis is proving that he's a comic actor rather than a comic who acts a bit'. I think that I've worked hard at doing that - and this role in Corrie is the ultimate prize for me.

"I now have a six-month contract with the show, starting from April. After the two episodes you're about to see, Michael obviously goes away for a while. That fits in with my play and also works for the restorative justice storyline."

Would you like to stay for longer than six months?
"Yeah, but it's for the writers to see where Michael can go and what can happen. It's also down to me, in some way, to inspire them with whatever I do with Michael."

Do you have any other background on Michael's character?
"I know that within the storyline, there's a bit of tragedy in his past. We covered that in the screen test, but I'm not sure how much of it will be explored in the actual show. But there has been a tragedy there."

Can you tell us a bit more about Michael's confrontation with Gail? If he dangerous?
"Michael is in the house and he tries to blag it a bit. Once he's been caught out, he tries to say that he's come to fix a gas leak. In the end, Michael panics, runs out and knocks Gail over.

"It was lovely to film those scenes with Helen Worth. I was literally there for two Mondays. I started with the stunts - I was legging it down the road and had Kylie chasing after me. Then on the second Monday I did my scenes with Gail - and Helen has been really, really helpful. I've been at lots of functions with Corrie cast members in the past, so it's lovely to feel that you do know people."

Who from the cast would you love to share screen time with?
"It'd be good to work with all of them. They're all fantastic characters. I'd love to think that I'd get some scenes with Roy. It's a shame that my friend Sue Johnston has just left! I went to her 70th birthday party just before Christmas and met a lot of the Corrie guys then. I didn't know I was coming in, but a lot of people were saying to me, 'You'd be great in Corrie!'"

Do you have any career regrets?
"People might say that Celebrity Big Brother was a regret, but I can't say that it was because if I hadn't done it, Ricky Gervais wouldn't have come knocking on my door for Extras. I also came second in it!

"I came out of the house and thought, 'Ooh, that was a mistake' and then the phone didn't ring. But then Ricky Gervais rang and said, 'Come and play a twisted, demented version of yourself on Extras'. So your road takes you where it takes you."

What are your thoughts on the restorative justice issue that Corrie is tackling?
"In the storyline, Gail is imagining that this guy is going to come back like the bogeyman. I think it's a good idea that that the victim can meet the criminal and they don't become some symbolic, scary person. Maybe then it helps if the person who did it is really apologetic and is affected by seeing the victim. I think it's worthwhile."

Coronation Street star Ben Price has revealed that he has an on-screen feud with Les Dennis on the way.

The actor's character Nick Tilsley will be furious when his mum Gail starts to grow closer to burglar Michael Rodwell in an upcoming storyline.

Dennis made his first appearance as Michael in March, when the dodgy character broke into Gail's home. However, future scenes will see Gail forgive Michael when they come face-to-face again in a restorative justice storyline.

Gail's relationship with Michael will be yet another worry for Nick, who has struggled to get his own life back on track after suffering a head injury in a road accident last summer.

Price told ITV's This Morning today (May 21): "When I did all the research about head injury and what it's like afterwards, people said there's stages. When you recover from the operation that's one stage, but what you will be like then on can be very, very different. I'm not the guy I was - I'm not that nice little Nicky Tilsley."

On the challenge of playing the storyline, he continued: "It's great. It's perfect. You play this one nice guy, then suddenly you can say all these things you've been thinking for a few years!

"I can have a stand-up row now, whereas before I think he would have been careful. Les Dennis is coming in to be with my mum - I don't like Les Dennis. I love Les [in real life], but [Nick] can have an instant dislike to someone!"

Jimi Mistry, who plays Nick's on-screen love rival Kal Nazir, also appeared on This Morning and suggested that his character could go down a darker path too.

Mistry said of Kal: "There is an edge to him. I think deep down, he's been in the army for 20 years and he's got an interesting background. Initially he was a nice fun-loving guy, but you've just got to keep watching."

Coronation Street's new recruit Les Dennis has revealed that Kylie Platt is inadvertently responsible for his character Michael Rodwell becoming a permanent presence in Weatherfield.

Michael made his first appearance on the show in March, when he burgled the Platt family's home. This week, he returns to screens as Gail (Helen Worth) pays him a visit in prison as part of a restorative justice storyline.

Show bosses have previously confirmed that an unlikely relationship will develop between Michael and Gail, but it has now emerged that mischievous Kylie is responsible for the unlikely connection forming.

Kylie causes trouble by writing Michael a spoof love letter in Gail's name, which brings him back to the cobbles to seek answers once he is released from jail.

Dennis told ITV's Good Morning Britain today (June 5): "I'm absolutely loving it. I came in six or eight weeks ago and burgled the house and everyone's been saying, 'Well, what was that about? You were just there for a couple of episodes'.

"Now this is the restorative justice story - that Gail comes along to meet the guy that burgled her and then maybe a friendship will blossom."

He continued: "We certainly have a relationship that will blossom. I'm loving it - working with Helen and being right in the middle of the Platt family is just great fun.

"What happens is I get a letter in prison from - I think - Gail talking about love and destiny. I turn up on the street in about three weeks' time and it turns out that it's Kylie and David who have orchestrated this letter for a bit of a laugh - but the laugh goes badly on them!"

The actor and former Family Fortunes host is well-known for his Coronation Street impressions, but admitted that he was still nervous about filming on the iconic Rovers Return set recently.

He said: "When the late Dustin Gee and myself used to do Vera and Mavis, we used to be in a mocked-up Rovers Return. When I went into The Rovers the other week for the first time, I was so nervous. Helen said to me, 'You've done so much' but I said, 'But this is The Rovers!' It is quite scary for every actor that goes in there."

Michael's return storyline begins in tomorrow night's episodes (June 6) as Gail goes ahead with her plan to visit him.

Coronation Street newcomer Michael Rodwell arrives in Weatherfield next week and quickly finds himself in the middle of an embarrassing situation with Gail McIntyre.

Michael made his first appearance on the show in March when he burgled the Platt family's home and returned to screens earlier this month as Gail (Helen Worth) paid him a visit in prison as part of a restorative justice storyline.

Next week, he heads back to the cobbles on a mission to find Gail, unaware that it was actually Kylie Platt who wrote the spoof love letter in her name.

Here, Les Dennis - who plays Michael - discusses his character's misunderstanding with Gail and what is coming up for the pair.

What can you tell us about Michael? Has he changed his ways since his visit from Gail in prison?
Michael isn't what you would call a career burglar, so I don't think it's a case of him changing his ways and rather him seeing the error of his ways instead. Michael is a man down on his luck. He's lost his family, his home and his business when the recession hit and it went down the pan. He found himself randomly burgling because of the situation he was in. Michael was hoping it would be okay because he assumed Gail would be insured and he wasn't intending to hurt anybody. I think he is somebody who is able to see what he's done wrong. I would like to think that for the first time, Gail has a good man. He starts off bad, but over time we're going to see he's a good man at heart.

How does Michael feel when he receives the letter that is supposedly from Gail?
I think he was absolutely over the moon. The letter says that she believes they belong together and he knows that there was definitely a spark there when they met in prison. He never thought in his wildest dreams that he would get a letter like this, so he's really happy. That's what makes Michael return to the Street and to go and visit Gail at her home. Then he finds out that all is not as it seems!

What happens when Michael turns up in Weatherfield?
He turns up at Gail's door but David answers the door. Michael keeps calling him Nick, which is quite amusing! David shouts up to his mum before he realises who he really is. Michael's told David that he's an old school friend of Gail's. When Gail comes down she's shocked - she doesn't expect to see him stood in her house again.

Is he disheartened when he finds out it wasn't Gail who wrote the letter?
Very. Not least because he's turned up at Gail's door and made a right fool of himself! Michael turns up and says to Gail that he thought there was a spark between them too and that he's delighted she feels the same about their future together. Then Gail asks to see the letter he's referring to and tells him she didn't write it. He's gutted that the letter hasn't come from her.

Does he soon realise what has happened?
Well for a minute or two he can't get his head round it - he thinks, if Gail didn't write it, who did? Then he turns to look at David, who is stood there, and the cogs start to turn... it's quite a comic moment.

Michael is released from prison and goes to work in a garden centre. How does that come about?
He gets the job himself and he tells them all about his past. The guy who runs the centre decides to give him a chance. It's all going really well because Michael loves gardening - he's very green-fingered, which we'll also see down the line. He's loving the job but then one day Kylie, Max and David turn up and it all turns sour. They've got it in for him, big time.

What happens when they see him?
They make his life a misery. They shout out to people to watch out for him, tell people to watch their wallets and not to trust him. They both embarrass him completely.

Is he angry at Kylie, David and Nick for trying to sabotage him and ruin his friendship with Gail?
He can understand to a certain extent why they are doing what they're doing and he can see why they think that Gail shouldn't trust him. But then there does come a point where he starts to think he's had enough punishment from them. Michael has a steely side to him and can stand up to them if he wants to. There's a point where Nick threatens Michael to stay away, but Michael does stand up for himself. But then he's also worried about getting Gail in trouble too - so he decides to back off from Gail and from the Street.

If Michael did start a relationship with Gail down the line, does he think it would be tricky because of her family and the attitude they have towards him?
Michael's prepared to get over those obstacles and I have filmed some scenes where he clings on as much as he can. Nick and David really do pull every trick out of the bag to keep him away and Michael tries to cope with it. Gail fights against her family as much as she can, but she does feel forced to choose between them and that's heartbreaking. Michael tells Gail that she needs to start putting herself first.

How has it been being part of this storyline so far?
I've absolutely loved it, every second of it. When I first came into Corrie I knew I was being given a good role but this is well beyond what I ever imagined. I love playing Michael, too; he's sweet, but he's also steely. It means I can go from having some sweet and funny scenes with Helen [Worth] to having a different dynamic with her family. The relationship with Nick is interesting, too - neither one of them want to back down.

Coming up on Coronation Street, Michael Rodwell turns to Eileen Grimshaw after he suffers a health scare.

When Michael (Les Dennis) receives a letter from the hospital asking him to attend an appointment with a heart consultant, he finds himself overcome with anxiety.

With a jittery Michael unable to confide in his partner Gail McIntyre, it's left to Eileen (Sue Cleaver) to accompany him to the appointment.

Back at home and wanting to cheer Michael up, an oblivious Gail plans a Japanese evening in order to lift his spirits. However, when David (Jack P Shepherd) and Kylie (Paula Lane) see Eileen and Michael arriving home and sharing a hug, they wonder what is going on.

Having received bad news at the hospital, Michael buries his head in the sand and attempts to enjoy his evening with Gail.

When David and Kylie arrive and insist on joining them, the evening takes a turn for the worst when David accuses Michael of having an affair with Eileen.

Backed into a corner, Michael is forced to tell Gail how he asked Eileen to accompany him to his hospital appointment rather than her. Will Gail be angry or understanding, especially when she hears Michael's results?

Coronation Street airs these scenes on Wednesday, October 29 and Friday, October 31 on ITV.

Coming up on Coronation Street, Michael Rodwell collapses while trying to keep the truth about his heart condition from his son Gavin.

Michael (Les Dennis) is delighted when he seems to make progress with his estranged son following their reunion, but he can't bring himself to confess that he has a hereditary heart condition.

When Nick Tilsley complains that he is short-staffed at the Bistro, Michael offers Gavin's services and explains that he is a professional cocktail waiter.

Gavin is forced to agree and although he is clearly clueless about cocktails, there is an instant attraction between him and Steph Britton as she shows him the ropes.

Later, Michael calls at the Bistro to lend Gavin his support, but suddenly suffers a dizzy spell and collapses.

New Corrie contract for Les Dennis!

Coronation Street bosses have rewarded Les Dennis’ hard work with a lucrative new contract.
The ex quiz-show host had only joined the ITV soap on a short contract but he has impressed everyone backstage and they really wanted him to stay.
So it means fans will see his character, Michael Rodwell, for at least another 12 months.
A show source told the Sun: “It’s always a good sign when people are offered a new contract - it shows the bosses like the way they are performing and want to tie them down to build up the character.
“He loves playing Michael and has become good friends with lots of the cast and the crew.”

Coronation Street's Les Dennis: 'Michael finds out Gavin isn't Gavin'

Coronation Street's Fake Gavin secret will be exposed soon, leaving Michael Rodwell stunned by the impostor's deception.
Les Dennis, who plays Michael, has confirmed that he has already filmed the dramatic scenes which see his character discover the shocking truth.
Andy Carver (Oliver Farnworth) has been impersonating Michael's son Gavin since the end of last year. Since then, the real Gavin has died and Michael's wife Gail has helped to cover up the real story, fearing that the truth could kill her husband due to his heart condition.
Speaking on The Paul O'Grady Show, Dennis revealed: "Michael finds out - he finds out that 'Gavin' isn't Gavin. I get very angry - very, very angry with both of them, as you can imagine. It's the worm that turns, we shall say!"
He added: "The relationship [with Gail] will be tested by the fact that Michael finds out about Gavin. He does go ballistic a bit."
The actor also explained that Michael's heart problems will be revisited within the next few weeks, as "there's a reason for another attack coming up very soon".
Asked whether this will be when Michael discovers Andy's secret, he laughed: "That doesn't quite do it!"
Dennis also confirmed that he will be sticking with Coronation Street for the foreseeable future, saying: "I've just signed for my second year, which is great. I can't believe that I've already been there a year. It's just flown and I'm loving it."

Coronation Street's Michael Rodwell will refuse to forgive his wife Gail when the truth about Andy Carver's identity is exposed.

Next week's episodes see Michael make a life-changing discovery when he realises that Andy (Oliver Farnworth) has been impersonating his son Gavin and that Gail has known for months.

The secret is revealed when Michael's ex-wife Susan sends him a photo album filled with pictures of Gavin. As Michael looks through them and sees Gavin get progressively older, he realises that he looks nothing like Andy and demands answers.

Andy is forced to confess everything, leaving Michael particularly devastated by the distressing news that the real Gavin died several weeks ago.

Les Dennis, who plays Michael, explained: "When Gail admits that she already knows, he is absolutely devastated. He's just like, 'What? You knew about this? Why would you keep this from me? Why would you do this?'

"She says she did it because of his heart and he says, 'You thought that it would stop? I'd rather it stopped than have a breaking heart'. He says, 'Surprise surprise, it's still ticking, I'm still here'. And he gets very angry!

"I think he still loves Gail but he is so shocked at what she's done. I don't believe at this point he can forgive her. He thinks that all trust is gone."

Michael will also reject Andy, no longer able to treat him as a son now that he knows he is an impostor.

Dennis commented: "Michael just doesn't want anything to do with Andy and he is so cold. Oliver plays it so beautifully. Andy really wants to make amends and let Michael know that he likes him, that he's very fond of him, but Michael just doesn't want to know.

"We have a classic Corrie scene at the Bistro where Michael lets everybody know what's been going on. It's that kind of, 'You think you know this barman, this young lad but he isn't what he seems'. So he outs him and he also outs Gail for what she's done!"

Michael later puts his health at risk in the aftermath of his discovery, hitting the bottle and eating the wrong foods despite strict medical guidance over his heart condition.

Discussing the sudden shift in his character, Dennis added: "I'm glad that Michael does find out. I'm also glad that we're seeing a harder side of Michael because since being a burglar he's been really nice, and he acquiesces and he gives in to everybody.

"But now we're going to see the worm that turns. He's very angry. He's not nasty but there's a steelier side to him that we haven't seen before."

Les Dennis taking a break from Coronation Street
Coronation Street actor Les Dennis has confirmed he’s taking a break from the soap so he can appear in a theatre play.
He’s been cast to play the role of Grandad in Alan Bleasdale’s Down the Dock Road at Royal Court.
The show follows the life of Grandad during his last day working down the Liverpool docks.
It kicks off in the spring and Les - who plays Weatherfield’s Michael Rodwell - has been granted special permission from Corrie bosses to appear in the play.
He told the Liverpool Echo: “I’m delighted that ITV Coronation Street have allowed me a short sabbatical to step away from the cobbles to pursue one of my all time dreams.
“I saw Down the Dock Road when it was first performed 40 years ago and the humour and it’s message has stayed with me ever since."

Les Dennis is assuring fans of Coronation Street that he is not planning on permanently leaving the cobbles.

The actor will be taking a break from his role as Michael Rodwell to lead a production of Down the Dock Road at the Royal Court Liverpool in the spring.

Seeking to quell any questions about his future at Corrie, Dennis has promised that he's merely taking a "sabbatical" from the soap.

"It's just a seven week sabbatical. I have a big storyline now which I start filming in January, which builds up to Michael leaving," he explained to the Liverpool Echo.

"His relationship with Eileen will become rocky because of someone else arriving in the street."

To further clarify his status, Dennis also confirmed that his Corrie contract will keep him on the cobbles at least through 2016.

"I love playing Michael," he stressed. "I'm looking forward to get back to the role and I love the fact that people are getting to love the character and recognising me as Michael."

Dennis took up the role of loveable conman Michael Rodwell in March 2014.

Prior to his time on the soap, he was of course known for presenting Family Fortunes for a whopping 15 years and also starring in Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's Extras.

Are Michael Rodwell and Gail McIntyre about to reunite?

Ever since they went their separate ways, Coronation Street fans have been calling for a reunion between Gail McIntyre and Michael Rodwell.
Poor Gail has been like a lost puppy since losing Michael to Eileen Grimshaw but with Eileen now offering Pat Phelan a little too much support, Michael is feeling dejected and uncomfortable in the relationship.
Which of course allows Gail to swoop in and try to re-snare her man, right? She has made little secret of the fact that she would have her beloved burglar back in a second and when Michael comes in to the gym for its open day while she’s there, she enjoys showing him the ropes.
The friendly company is probably just what Michael needs as Eileen and Jason are giving Phelan their full support in the wake of accusations that the sleazy builder attacked Anna Windass.
Already feeling pushed out by Phelan, Michael is unhappy with Eileen’s blind faith in him and it looks like her being duped by the local villain could be her and Michael’s undoing.
But will Michael and Gail’s hot and sweaty gym session possibly lead to more?

It looks like Les Dennis will be sticking around on Coronation Street for a little while longer, as he's just signed a year contract.

He - along with co-star Oliver Farnworth - are taking a seven-week break from the ITV soap to do a play together, but they'll both be back straight after the curtain closes.

"Well I've just signed for another year," he said, revealing that he'd made the decision to try and squeeze in a play every year if he could.

"I'd started to do the clubs, but I wanted to act as well," he said. "So I made the decision that whenever I got time - whenever I wasn't doing my comedy - that I'd go and do a play once a year."

Farnworth added: "I completely said to them from the off that Corrie comes first, it has to come first, I'm contracted to them and they've been so accommodating and so wonderful at managing to wrangle things around."

He also revealed that since getting a knock on the head when he was younger, he's lost the ability to smell.

"I've no sense of smell," he began, explaining it might come back one day. "It's been so long now, I don't really think I notice anymore."

The pair will be starring in Alan Bleasdale's Down The Dock Road at Liverpool's Royal Court theatre from March 11 to April 9.

The doctor did say the pains were probably caused by stress, so I put them down to panic attack-like pains rather than his heart (people often mistake panic attacks for heart attacks as I'm sure you're aware). My interpretation could well have been wrong though.

They say that all's fair in love and war but that was before anyone went up against Phelan!

We spoke to Les Dennis about how Michael isn't just battling for his own heart...

What’s Michael’s biggest problem with Phelan?

Michael has an instinct about Phelan. He’s watching him all the time. He thinks he’s making a play for Eileen so he’s watching for that too.

But Jason and Eileen can’t understand what he’s on about. Michael’s been in prison, he has an instinct for wrong ‘uns. He puts two and two together and he thinks that Phelan is bad through and through.

Is he scared of him?

Michael does have some fear but he has a hard edge too that we don’t often see. There were times when he was ready to face up to Callum in the past, so Michael can be fearless and when he sees injustice he will forget his fear.

What’s it like for Michael when Eileen fails to see Phelan’s true colours?

Phelan is so devious and plausible that it’s not surprising Eileen can’t see it but lying there in his hospital bed he feels helpless to do anything, he feels emasculated.

Why can’t he make her see sense?

It’s not just Eileen, nobody will believe him, not Jason and even Andy, who told him about the chisels starts to doubt it and thinks maybe he heard the wrong thing.

Gail and Michael - Coronation Street - ITV
Michael confides his fears to Gail.

Is Gail a better confidante for him?

He goes to her in times of need and, weirdly, Gail loves him so much she’s giving him relationship advice. Maybe she’s playing the long game.

How does Phelan react to Michael’s new threat?

There’s a lovely scene where Phelan needles him again on the street. Michael warns him to stay away from Eileen and Phelan laughs off the threat. Michael wavers, he’s not sure he can take on this man after all.

Tell us what happens when he tries to spy on Phelan?

Michael hears from Andy that Phelan is giving Eileen a lift in the van and Michael heads off on his crutches to find out what’s going on. He’s on a mission. He gets into the back of the van, complete with crutches... and Eileen finds him there.

She’s very cross, she tells Michael it’s over and once again Phelan seems to be the saint here and Michael is the idiot.

Can he cope without Eileen? Does he love her?

There was a point a little while ago when he said to Lloyd: "Do you ever think you’re with the wrong woman but for the right reasons?". He can cope without her but at the moment he doesn’t want to.

Would he ever go back to Gail?

I think Michael found himself in this situation where there’s such a web of lies Gail’s told him about Gavin and Andy that he can’t forgive her. He does still love her however, so who knows?

How would he feel to know Phelan makes a move on Eileen?

He’d be absolutely gutted. He kind of knows it’s coming though.

What advice would you give him?

I would say for him to fight for what he wants but the problem is Michael doesn’t know whether he wants Gail or Eileen.

Who do you think he should be with - Gail or Eileen?

From Les’s point of view it’s great fun working with them both. But for Michael, he needs someone who is a little more settled and nurturing than Eileen. Eileen doesn’t nurture him but they have that kind of dynamic where they shout at each other and it’s exciting. With Gail he’s totally looked after and with his condition that’s maybe what he needs.

Can Michael ever get one up on Phelan?

I don’t know. Not at the moment it seems. I’m going off to do a play soon and we’ve joked that maybe Michael could come back trained as a Ninja!

What’s the best thing about being at Corrie for you?

I just absolutely love being in the show. I’ve watched it since I was a kid, I saw the first episode. I still pinch myself when I drive through that gate and I still count my blessings.

When you’re a fan of something and then you get to be in it, it’s not work.

Les Dennis has today announced his intention to leave Coronation Street later this year in a hugely dramatic storyline.

Les joined Coronation Street in 2014 as charming house burglar, Michael Rodwell, who then began a relationship with Gail Platt after she forgave her uninvited guest.

Following a storyline about restorative justice, their romance blossomed when she got know the ‘gentle’ man behind the burglary. Softhearted Michael soon made himself at home, working as a taxi driver for Steve MacDonald and becoming a regular in the Rovers.

However, his marriage to Gail hit the rocks within hours of the nuptials when he discovered Andy had been masquerading as his son, Gavin. Michael was horrified to discover Gail had lied to him and even worse, Gavin was actually dead and she'd kept that from him too.

Angry and betrayed, Les's character fell into the arms of Gail's nemesis, Eileen. This was fairly short lived as Eileen soon replaced Michael with local builder, Pat Phelan. Michael could see Pat for what he was, but Eileen refused to see it.

Of late, Michael’s confrontations with Pat have become legendary, as he seems to be one of the very few characters on the Street who’ve got the measure of evil and conniving Phelan.

Renowned for his stage and television work, Les has become a firm favourite with fans of the soap, fellow actors and colleagues at Coronation Street’s production base in Trafford, Manchester and having achieved a long held ambition, feels excited to move on to new projects.

Of his decision Les said:

"As a lifelong fan of the show, playing Michael Rodwell in Coronation Street has been a dream come true. Becoming part of the ITV Coronation Street family has been a wonderful experience and my decision to leave was a hard one.

“Earlier this year, thanks to Coronation Street giving me a sabbatical from the show, I was thrilled to be able to produce and star in a sell-out production of Alan Bleasdale's Down the Dock Road at The Royal Court Liverpool. I always knew that the time would come when I would want the freedom to do more projects, and now feels like the right time.

“The talented team of writers and producers have come up with a very dramatic exit for Michael on the show which will be exciting to film. I’ll treasure the two and a half years I have been part of such an iconic show and move on with very fond memories, so many lovely friends and colleagues and an ambition achieved."

Coronation Street producer Kate Oates commented:

“We’re very sad to see Les leave Coronation Street as he’s an enormously popular and talented actor. He’s brought warmth, wit and integrity to the character of Michael. We have worked on giving him a great story to ensure a fantastic and dramatic end to his time on the Street. I can't wait to see it unfold!

"He will be very much missed and we wish him many successes with his new ventures."

Hope his storyline concludes with Phelan getting his comeuppance!

Coronation Street's Michael Rodwell will make a dangerous new enemy in Pat Phelan in the lead-up to his exit.

Michael has never trusted sleazy Phelan anyway, but his suspicions will increase in next week's episodes, with worrying results.

Fans know that Phelan is currently trying to persuade people to buy flats in an 'exciting new property development', which is actually a huge con as they'll never be built.

And with Michael growing more and more unsure of Pat's intentions, he will decide to quiz Anna Windass, who is painfully aware of just how manipulative the builder can be.

Armed with information that proves his suspicions are correct, the situation comes to a head when Pat and his business partner Vinny railroad pensioner Freddie into playing a game of poker.

Unwilling to stand by and watch Phelan fleece Freddie, Michael pulls up a chair and joins the poker school. But when Michael wipes the floor with him, Phelan's left fuming and determined to settle his score. Has Michael just made a dangerous new enemy?

Les Dennis, who plays Michael, was recently spotted shooting some very tense scenes out on location, which appear to show his character's health take another turn for the worse.

Coronation Street viewers should prepare themselves for explosive scenes next week as Michael Rodwell faces a terrifying showdown with Pat Phelan.

The good news is that Michael finally gets the proof that Phelan (Connor McIntyre) has spent the past few months conning the local residents with his so-called property development. The bad news is that Phelan isn't letting him get away with the all-important evidence easily...

Here, Les Dennis – who plays Michael – previews the unmissable scenes ahead.

Things seem to be going pretty well for Michael at the moment, don't they?

"Yes, he is really happy to be part of the Platt family again. He cares a lot for everyone in the family and he feels he is back where he belongs. He does love Gail and life is looking great."

What makes Michael decide to bury the hatchet with Phelan at the start of next week?

"He is watching Phelan and Vinny in the pub in cahoots and he just knows they are definitely up to no good. He then sees that Freddie is getting caught up in a poker game with Phelan. Refusing to stand by and let him be fleeced, he pulls up a chair.

"Michael wipes the floor with Phelan at poker, but he realises that might be a dangerous situation to be in. So he decides that he is going to bury the hatchet - sort of keep your friends close but your enemies closer."

Tension flares up between Michael Rodwell and Pat Phelan in Coronation Street
CHANNEL 5
Is he aware that Phelan is hating the idea of making friends with him?

"He's under no illusion that he is playing with fire and that Phelan does not want to be his best mate. But for Michael it isn't about wanting a new friend. He realises if he is not winding Phelan up and challenging him all the time, he might find out a bit more about what he is up to."

What happens next?

"Michael goes into Number 11 to collect his electric blanket that he left there and he overhears Phelan on the phone to Vinny talking about his plans to fleece Eileen and make their getaway. Phelan has no idea he's been overheard as Michael manages to hide upstairs."

Why does Michael go to Anna to discuss this?

"Michael knows that Anna has never trusted Phelan and he knows what she has said about him before. He realises she is someone who will believe what he is saying and help him, but he doesn't get the reaction he wants. She is still in a bad way after the crash and wants to stay out of it all."

What happens when Michael then winds Phelan up in the street?

"Michael feels in a very strong position and enjoys rattling Phelan - pretending that he wants one of the flats and at the same time making it very clear he knows all is not as it seems."

How come Michael still wants to protect Eileen after she broke his heart?

"Michael is a kind man and it was never really right with him and Eileen. Gail was his true love and now he is back with her, he sees no reason to hold a grudge. Michael sees Phelan as rotten to the core and he doesn't want Eileen caught up in that."

What does Michael find when he goes to look at the development site?

"He finds nothing at all. There is no sign of any building work and he wastes no time in telling Eileen. But she is not interested and she makes it clear that she is sick of him going on about it. Eileen is still convinced that everything is above board."

But Michael also tells her about Phelan planning to make his getaway to Mexico. How does Eileen react?

"She is rattled. He is very specific about what he has heard and she tells him he is talking rubbish, but she is clearly unsettled by it."

When does Anna come back into the plan?

"Anna hears a phone ringing in Faye's bag and is furious that she has stolen Phelan's phone. But then she listens to a message on the phone from Vinny to Phelan and she knows Michael was telling the truth and that they finally have evidence."

So Michael goes to the site again. What's he trying to find?

"With Anna now back on side and helping, he decides to go back to the site to see what other evidence he can find before Vinny and Phelan do their disappearing act to Mexico. He knows there must be something that he can find to prove to Eileen and everyone else."

When he unearths the tickets and passport, does Michael think he's got what he needs?

"Finding the fake passport and the tickets is all the proof he needs and he knows this is going to help, but there is a lot of paperwork there for him to go through.

"But Michael has just found the passport and tickets when he looks up and sees Phelan approaching. Anna knows Phelan is on his way, but hasn't managed to warn Michael."

What can you tell us about Michael's confrontation with Phelan?

"Michael knows he has the evidence and he is very confident as he tells Phelan that he finally has him banged to rights. But as Phelan reacts, Michael realises that he has just landed himself in very dangerous territory."

Was it exciting to film such an intense scene with Connor?

"Working with Connor is always fantastic. The intensity he brings to this sort of scene is brilliant. We are great mates off screen, but once I am squaring up to him, it is a different story. I can't go into the detail of what happens in the scene but it is very dramatic."

Does Michael think that Phelan is going to kill him?

"He knows now that Phelan is capable of anything, but is murder a possibility? Well, he knows he wants rid of him and that he knows too much. Does Michael fear for his life? Yes, probably but you will have to wait and see what happens."

We know you've finished filming. Are you sad to be leaving Michael and Coronation Street behind?

"Yes I have had the amazing time working on the show. It was a difficult decision to make to leave as I have made some fantastic friends, people who will be friends for life. Sue Cleaver invited me round for dinner after my last scene and when I got there it was a surprise leaving do which was so lovely of her. We even ended up playing the board game of Family Fortunes with me as the host!

"But I am delighted with my exit storyline. It is fantastic to be at the heart of such a big storyline for the programme and to work with Connor, who is a brilliant villain. I will be keeping in touch with everyone and I will watch Michael's exit."

Coronation Street airs Michael and Phelan's dramatic showdown on Friday, November 18 at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.

It could be the end of the road for Michael Rodwell in Coronation Street as evil Pat Phelan decides that it’s time to silence him – but as Michael wanders into a dangerous situation, intent on exposing Phelan’s crimes, could he be set to die in a tragic twist as Les Dennis’ exit from the show draws near?

Phelan has managed to wriggle out of Michael’s accusations that he plans to fleece the locals and disappear to Mexico, leaving Michael realising that he needs more evidence to topple him.

As smug Phelan and Vinny continue to try and play it cool, Michael watches them for any slip up and soon begins to realise that Todd Grimshaw knows what is going on too.

Meanwhile, Faye Windass has swiped Phelan’s phone as part of a dare by her boyfriend Seb and angry Anna confiscates it.

But the truth about Phelan’s plan dawns on Anna when she listens to a voicemail. Filling Michael in on what she has heard, the pair come up with a risky plan which sees Michael break into the building site.

Meanwhile. Anna has been tasked with distracting Phelan by luring him to her flat to offer him money to leave Weatherfield. As Phelan tells Anna where she can stick her offer, he is stunned to hear his phone ring.

Enraged at Anna, he answers it and hears a call that confirms Michael is at the building site. With a sinister look on his face, Phelan heads to the site while Anna desperately tries to contact Michael, who is rifling through the paperwork at the site.

Thrilled to come across the fake passport and the Mexico ticket, Michael has what he needs to topple Phelan but is stunned when a menacing Phelan shows up.
Sensing that he is in serious danger. Michael lobs a chair at Phelan and makes a run for his life but can he escape alive? Meanwhile. Gary sets off on a rescue mission to save Michael but as he arrives at the building site, what will he find?

Is Michael on the verge of toppling Phelan or has the corrupt builder silenced him forever?

We didn't think it was possible, but Coronation Street's villain Pat Phelan has just got even more evil after he left poor Michael Rodwell to die.

Shock scenes tonight (November 18) saw Michael's feud with Phelan have fatal consequences as it triggered a devastating heart attack, just minutes after he had uncovered the builder's scam.

Fans had been aware that Les Dennis was leaving the show, but details of his exit had been kept under wraps until transmission.

In the first of tonight's double bill, Michael was delighted when his detective work paid off as he found Phelan's (Connor McIntyre) passport and ticket to Mexico hidden in his office.

Sadly, his delight was short-lived as a menacing Phelan caught him in the act - and made it very clear he wouldn't be getting out alive.

Although Michael did attempt to make a desperate run for his life, he was stopped in his tracks when his heart condition came back to haunt him and he collapsed on the floor in agony. And it very quickly became clear that Phelan wouldn't be calling an ambulance!

Instead, Phelan sat with Michael and took delight in his suffering - and not even the timely arrival of Gary Windass could save him.

Michael desperately tried to call for help, but the closing moments of the episode showed that he had sadly been defeated by Pat.

Michael's death is sure to devastate his loved ones - and in particular, Gail - but whether Phelan will get away with his latest ghastly crime remains to be seen.

Discussing his shocking departure, Les said: "At least I'm not going to die in an armchair, I am not going off in a taxi, it is an amazing finish and to be working with Connor, the villain that all viewers love to hate, is incredible, everyone keeps coming up to me in supermarkets saying when are you going to get that Phelan - well, I've got a 'Phelan' he is going to get me.

"Michael's death is going to be another devastation for the Platts, there has been Callum and Kylie and now Gail has lost husband number 6. So that has a massive fallout for the family, I think that she will be devastated. I think that Gail really did believe that she had found true love with Michael, and Michael was the good guy that she needed, but he was taken from her. Another Gail warning unheeded!

"I've been here for two and a half years and it has absolutely flown by. It is a show that I have loved since I was a kid, I've watched it from the very beginning in the '60s, for me to be part of it has been just a joy, an absolute joy.

"I will miss everybody, the crews here are absolutely fantastic, everybody says it is a like a family here, it is a cliche but it is true. I will miss all the actors I have worked with and I will hopefully come back and visit and see them, but sadly not Michael, he can't come back, but Les can come back and visit the actors - but Michael is not coming back unless he wakes up in the shower and it was all a dream!"
