Coronation Street bosses have been warned their plan to broadcast a terminally-ill character committing suicide before the watershed could lead to copycat deaths.
The programme's character Hayley Cropper - played by actress Julie Hesmondhalgh - will be shown taking an overdose because she cannot face living with incurable cancer.
But the scenes will be broadcast before 9pm, prompting welfare charity the Samaritans to express concern they could affect vulnerable viewers.
Coronation Street bosses and Ms Hesmondhalgh say they have approached the subject sensitively and do not believe he programme will lead to more suicides.
According to the Daily Mirror , the Samaritans provided storyline advice to the programme's producers, including requesting that details about the drugs used in the right-to-die storyline are not revealed.
A spokeswoman for the charity told the paper: "We advised them to give no details of the medication or how she obtained the drugs.
"Portraying an overdose as a gentle and peaceful way to die can be very dangerous and bears no resemblance to the reality of slow liver failure afterwards.
"We have advised them to make it as safe as possible, but we can't stop them from doing it. We might not agree, but dramas all, at some point, cover these issues."
Ms Hesmondhalgh said there was "an almost holy atmosphere" on set when she filmed her final scene with on-screen husband Roy, played by David Neilson.
"It didn't seem like I was watching anything to do with me at all, she said. "It was just these two characters that I really loved and seeing the end of their love story, oh yeah there were tears. My husband was absolutely devastated.
"The way it had been directed was very carefully done. There was an almost holy atmosphere on set and we only did one take.
"Kay Patrick, the director, made sure that everything was in place before we went for it so we weren't having to keep doing it over and over which is why it's quite raw I think."
Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn told the Daily Mirror: "We're not advocates for Hayley's decision and her belief she had a right to choose a time of her dying, in any way, shape or form."

No matter how sensitive they deal with this it will give people ideas. Not just the ones that want to end it all some way but others who want to end the life of for example elders in their family.

Especailly as it's portrayed as a correct solution and romanticized as it is being.

I like the fact they showed Roy being opposed to the idea and even though he agreed to support her, it is clear that he does not really and we will see the affect her suicide will have on him
I wasnt sure why the nurse had to get the GP to up the dosage of Hayley's pain killers? Each palliative or Macmillan nurse I have dealt with has been a nurse practitionner and has had the ability to prescribe for their patients?
otherwise what is the point of her calling round? hayley or Roy could just call the GP?
and whilst I realise different health regions operate slightly differently - each terminal patient I have known has been prescribed a 500ml bottle of liquid morphine or oramorph and there is a reason that is given to them...
I like the fact they showed Roy being opposed to the idea and even though he agreed to support her, it is clear that he does not really and we will see the affect her suicide will have on him
I would hope they show the downside of this suicide.

With Roy's reaction, I think they have done so far and I am sure they will after the event
Re Owen getting a loan...I expect Anna and Co will lose the roof over their heads over this one. Phelan is setting him up to get revenge by the looks of it. They humiliated him so he will not forgive that.

Yes, this is what I am thinking too and I never had the impression that Owen is that desperate to consider this deal ...especially knowing where the offer came from ....

I'd count on it playing that way.

I should think most viewers suspect that this will not have a happy ending. I can't imagine that everything goes hunky-dory, and they all live happily ever after!
Hunky dory really doesn't exist in soapland.
He put the house for security. Was that not Anna 's house when she was married to the other one? When did it become Owens I am confused...or was it Owens and Anna moved in?
I think it was Anna's but I think Owen bought it and became her landlord before they got together

Yes, that's correct, Perdy.
I think it was Anna's but I think Owen bought it and became her landlord before they got together
Anna and Eddie always only rented it from the fat guy that owned the kebab shop? He sold it to Owen who rented it to Anna until he moved in
I don't see why it's Anna that will suffer in the long run when it's all on Owen. She can always rent somewhere else and Katy will be ok as she will be covered by the benefits system. Izzy and Gary have their own rented place. Anna did not want all of this in the first place.
Over on Coronation Street, Sophie Webster pays more visits to the homeless shelter as she grows closer to newcomer Maddie Heath.
As we've previously reported, mischievous Maddie (Amy Kelly) will soon break into the Websters' home in an attempt to steal back Sally's watch after Sophie tricks her into handing it over.
Maddie's burglary attempt sees her punch Tim Metcalfe when he catches her in the act, but he later lies to everyone by claiming that the intruder was a burly man.
Sophie (Brooke Vincent) rightly suspects that Tim is lying to cover his embarrassment, so she confronts Maddie about being the real culprit.
Maddie is impressed by Sophie's detective work and their previously-tense relationship takes a surprising turn when she remarks on how pretty Sophie is.
Sophie sees another side to Maddie when she explains the reasoning behind her criminal acts, revealing that she needs the money to help her little brother, who's even worse off than she is.
A few days later, Sophie heads back to the shelter and is concerned to find that Maddie is sporting a bruised face.
Maddie is nervous about Sophie asking too many questions about her background and dashes off, but when Sophie chases after her, will she get more than she bargained for?

Also, Tracy is irked when Amy says she'd rather stay with Michelle at The Rovers.
Finally, Dev and Kal discuss the idea of opening a local gym together.

Carla later comforts Fiz, reminding her that Roy needs her. Can Fiz bring herself to forgive Roy?
Meanwhile, Kal advises Nick that it's possible to move on from a marriage, but Nick coldly points out that Kal's wife died whereas Leanne is still alive. Hurt, Kal leaves Nick to wallow. Later, Stella feels a twinge of attraction as she serves Kal in the Bistro, but Kal has his eye on another…

At the funeral, Fiz speaks about her memories of Hayley, but Roy feels he can't remain silent anymore. Is he about to reveal Hayley's secret?
Meanwhile, Sophie visits the shelter and is alarmed to see Maddie sporting a bruised face, but Maddie is annoyed to find that Sophie has been checking up on her background and dashes off. Just wanting to help, Sophie chases after Maddie, but will she get more than she bargained for?
Elsewhere, Nick feels like a burden to his family, so Leanne suggests he moves back into Victoria Court while she and Simon stay with Stella.
Also, Rob is put out when Tracy shuns his offer of a night out to spend time with Amy.
Finally, when the caterers fail to deliver the food for the wake, Steve improvises a spread at The Rovers. Andrea also drops by and lends a hand.
Despite Fiz, Anna and Carla's pleas, Roy insists on speaking out. To their relief, he tells the congregation that Hayley had her flaws but she was brave.
Later at the wake, Roy feels besieged by well-wishers and is desperate to escape the barrage of sympathy. Noticing Roy's absence, Anna and Fiz call at the café where Roy has left them a note...
Meanwhile, Sophie confides in Steph about Maddie's kiss. Steph is quick to realise that Sophie finds Maddie attractive, and thinks she ought to track her down. Will Sophie take the plunge and ask Maddie out?
Elsewhere, Tracy is taken aback when Rob asks to join her cosy night in with Amy and is even more surprised when Rob admits he's enjoyed himself.
Also, Michelle and Lloyd arrive back at The Rovers to find the food situation under control, and Steve singing Andrea's praises.
Has Sophie not learnt from the years that her stints in the shelter lead to robberies and trouble. I can't even remember the story last time. I think it was a robbery at the shelter and then Kevin helped with the lottery money. I hav'nt got a good memory. Now her house is being targeted.
Coronation Street's Roy Cropper is forced to be honest with Fiz Stape in tonight's double bill (January 27) as she demands answers over Hayley's death.
Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) already has an inkling that there was more to Hayley's final day than met the eye, and her suspicions escalate when she realises that Anna and Carla are both hiding something from her.
Paying a visit to Roy (David Neilson) at the café, Fiz urges him to talk her through Hayley's final hours, wanting to know exactly what happened.
When an emotional Roy realises that Fiz isn't going to let this go, he reluctantly reveals that Hayley ended her own life. How will Fiz feel about Roy hiding this crucial information from her?

Is the implication that people should not volunteer to help at shelters?

After all the tears Roy is left alone with a few facts: Hayley is dead, she killed herself, he didn’t stop her and he can’t tell anyone. So in emotional turmoil, the funeral is going to be tough, to put it mildly.
And things aren’t made easier when Fiz overhears him talking to Anna about the final moments and begins to suspect. She confides her fears with the already clued up Carla and realises she’s right. From that moment she’s set on a course to confront Roy.
When he cracks and admits what Hayley did, Fiz is furious at being lied to and the pair end up having a rare argument at the point where Roy needs her most.
Roy is trying to hold it together to sort out the funeral but can’t help venting his feelings, exploding about the precision of the event and how it all has to be up to Hayley’s standards. It’s clear he’s furious with Hayley. This – and Tyrone – shakes Fiz into realising that she has to stand by Roy, even as he’s deciding to boycott the funeral.
Carla talks him round and soon they’re at the service listening to Fiz giving a moving speech about Hayley. But then it’s Roy’s turn. Can he actually make it through? Or will he tell the crowd what happened and why they shouldn’t be sad?

I can't believe some of the post on here.
its a soap. its a brilliant TV show but criticising it for "not being 100% true to life" and implying that somehow its going to put people off volunterring, or make them take their own life is a little bit OTT in my opinion.

I was respoinding to the post which implied that helping at homeless shelters was looking for trouble. Of course it's a soap, but soaps do raise social issues that are in society and quite real. And this implies that:
"Has Sophie not learnt from the years that her stints in the shelter lead to robberies and trouble."
It's niave to underestimate the influence a soap has on the millions of viewers. There are plenty of instances in which peoples actions have been influenced by tv shows and films alike. Sometimes with disastous results.

Coronation Street's Roy Cropper struggles to keep a lid on his true emotions at Hayley's funeral in tonight's double bill (January 31).
Despite his previous threats, Roy (David Neilson) decides to be in attendance for Hayley's send-off following some persuasion from Fiz Stape and Carla Barlow. However, he is still secretly furious with Hayley for ending her own life.
As the service gets under way, Carla gives a moving poetry reading before Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) shares her memories of Hayley in an emotional speech.
Before Fiz gets a chance to finish, though, Roy suddenly stands up and declares that everyone deserves to know the truth about Hayley. As Fiz, Carla and Anna all panic, how much will Roy reveal?

Coronation Street airs tonight at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
Can't say as I blame him for feeling this way. He was made to be part of her suciide against his will. He didn't administer the poison, but she wanted him there, supporting her.
She did also give him the option to leave but he did not take it
She did also give him the option to leave but he did not take it
I think by then she had him pretty tied up with guilit. Which is how she even got him to that point. He was made to feel disloyal and unsupportative by not going along with her plans.

Exactly!, how could he then go 'ok I'll just pop to the Rovers, give you an hour?'
If Hayley wanted to be fair maybe she shouldn't have involved him.? Made the funeral plans, had a good day and done the deed alone whilst Roy was absent?

And that is the big question here. The torn part is her wanting not to get to the point of mindless suffering and opting to escape through suicide which most understand and the other side of the coin which is coercing someone who loves you to go along with something they don't want or agree with.
