A protective Ronnie (Samantha Womack) becomes increasingly worried when her sister Roxy starts dating Carl following her emotional split from Alfie Moon.

This is the moment that EastEnders' Ronnie Mitchell knocks Carl White unconscious in a dramatic New Year's Eve episode.

Ronnie (Samantha Womack) is forced to attack Carl in self-defence after he turns nasty with her in their latest clash.

With Ronnie wanting Carl (Daniel Coonan) to stay away from her sister, she offers him a £5,000 bribe to end his relationship with Roxy.

A menacing Carl has other ideas of how Ronnie can pay and quickly lunges for her, but she fights him off and hits him over the head with a champagne bottle.

As we reported last week, Carl is left unconscious following the altercation - and Ronnie ends up locking him in The Arches as a prisoner while she considers what to do next.

The next morning, Ronnie and Phil team up to force Carl out of Walford for good. The Mitchell duo think that they've done enough to intimidate Carl, but it's not long before he tries to get the upper hand once again.

When Carl later confronts Ronnie at The Arches, they have one last showdown which results in Ronnie getting rid of Carl forever…

EastEnders airs these scenes on Tuesday, December 31 at 7.30pm and Wednesday, January 1 at 8pm on BBC One.

Danny Dyer, who plays Mick, said this week: "We've been told it's one of the best ever New Year's Eve episodes. It's up there, you know. It was early days for us as well, very early days. We were making our mark and stuff.

"We were straight in the deep end, with all the characters. We're entertaining them and it's a really strong episode - you're gonna love it."

Kellie Bright, who plays Linda, added: "It was great fun to film actually, it was good. We met a lot of people, you've got a lot of people in the pub, all the cast members. It's like being thrown in at the deep end, but it's good, it's really good."

EastEnders airs these scenes on Tuesday, December 31 at 7.30pm on BBC One.

The writers behind EastEnders' gay romance storyline have spoken out after the BBC soap received complaints over the kiss it aired last Monday (December 30).

The episode, which saw Danny Pennant (Gary Lucy) and Johnny Carter (Sam Strike) kiss as part of a new plot that leads Johnny to come out to his father Mick (Danny Dyer), received two complaints from viewers.

Pete Lawson, who wrote Monday's episode, said on Twitter: "2014, and gay teens kissing on a soap still draws complaints. Makes me even prouder to have written that ep."

Daran Little, the writer behind tonight's episode where Johnny tells Mick about his sexuality, tweeted that the complaints show "no progress" is being made in people's attitudes towards gay people.

"10 years ago Coronation Street had complaints when I wrote Todd kissing Nick... now complaints about EastEnders gay kiss... no progress," he wrote.

"I thinks it's encouraging that Hollyoaks gay kisses don't get complaints, cos its viewers are young and accepting."

The episode which featured Danny and Johnny kissing aired an hour later than usual, at 9pm. A BBC spokeswoman said that it was only pushed back because the movie Shrek Forever After preceded it in the schedules.

"EastEnders aims to reflect real life, and this means including and telling stories about characters from many different backgrounds, faiths, religions and sexualities," she added.

"We approach our portrayal of homosexual relationships in exactly the same way as we do heterosexual relationships; ensuring depictions of affection or sexuality between couples are suitable for pre-watershed viewing."
