EastEnders bosses have cast comedian Terry Alderton as a new love interest for Bianca Butcher.

Alderton has landed the role of Cockney cabbie Terry Spraggan, who will be a regular character on the BBC soap.

A new storyline sees Bianca spend time away in Manchester before returning with Terry in tow.

Billed as a "bloke's bloke" who is never short of an entertaining story to tell, Terry has plenty in common with Bianca as he is a parent himself.

Show bosses have promised that Terry's arrival will mean some happiness for Bianca as she embarks on her first serious relationship since the departure of her husband Ricky.

Speaking of his new role, Alderton commented: "I'm still in shock, it's all happened so fast. I can't wait to get started and I love the fact I don't have to change my name!"

As well as being known as a stand-up comic, Alderton has a number of acting credits to his name - most notably playing Charlie Mead in London's Burning.

The new recruit will begin filming with EastEnders in September.

EastEnders newcomer Terry Alderton has revealed that he will be on the show for at least a year.

It was recently announced that Alderton has been cast as Bianca Butcher's new love interest, Terry Spraggan.

A new storyline will see Bianca (Patsy Palmer) spend time away from the Square on a fashion course and return with Terry in tow.

Alderton said to the Southend Standard: "I'm going to be in the show for at least a year. I've spoken to Patsy about it and she's really looking forward to it as well.

"I know quite a few of the guys on the programme already, so it won't be like a first day at school."

Alderton also revealed that viewers can look forward to plenty of on-screen fun between him and his real-life friend Shane Richie.

He said: "At first I was unsure as I'm a comic, but I came out of a meeting with Julia Crampsie, the casting director, and thought it sounded quite good.

"I'm good mates with Shane Richie and asked him what it's all about and he said my life is about to change.

"I don't want to be famous, so this seems a bit silly!"

EastEnders will air Alderton's first scenes as Terry in the autumn.

EastEnders introduces Bianca Butcher's new boyfriend Terry Spraggan next week following a whirlwind romance between the pair.

When Bianca (Patsy Palmer) returns home from Manchester, she has Terry and his two children with her, having decided to move them all into the Butcher house.

Here, Terry Alderton - who plays Terry - reveals his thoughts on joining the BBC soap and what's to come.

How do Terry and Bianca first meet?
"Terry meets Bianca up in Manchester, where he's been looking after his grandfather. He's been doing a few odd jobs at the university and he first sees Bianca while she's banging on this photo booth, trying to get her money back. You could call it something of a whirlwind love affair!"

What happens next?
"They decide to head back to Walford together and Terry literally turns up on Carol's doorstep, where he introduces himself as her daughter's new boyfriend and announces that he'll be moving in!"

How would you describe Terry?
"Everyone knows I'm a massive Southend fan, but Terry's a QPR man and comes from Maida Vale. Terry's a lot more placid that I am. He's a nice guy but he's no mug. I think he's clever fella and listens to Radio 4, likes Johnny Cash and Frank Zappa, that kind of stuff. He's one of life's optimists - he's always positive and aims to make things better. He's someone who's just trying to do his best but occasionally it goes wrong for him!"

What's it like working with Patsy Palmer and your other co-stars?
"Patsy has been fantastic to work with, she is very funny. I've been very lucky that the family which Terry is a part of is such a great one, with Lindsey [Coulson], Nitin [Ganatra] and Michael French, who is a hoot. My time here so far has been really great - everyone has been really supportive and helpful. It's a nice family to be a part of."

What's it like working with your new on screen children?
"It's really easy because they're both so on it! Jerzey, who plays my on screen daughter Rosie, is very funny. I've got a boy who is not much younger than her, so working and relating to her is easy. George who plays Terry Junior is that much older and a teenager. He's a really sweet boy and is actually quite shy. He reminds me of myself and he looks like me when I was younger. He's a great looking guy and obviously looks nothing like me now! But look at pictures of me back then and you could say, 'Yeah that could be his son'. Yes, I think the Spraggan kids are good, really good."

How have you found your first few weeks of filming?
"On one of my first days of filming, I was stood in the Square with Patsy and Jessie [Wallace], and in my mind they are still Bianca and Kat. We're stood there outside The Vic running through our lines, and I'm thinking, 'Woah, this is very weird'.

"Then we go for a take, I'm in the café waiting for my cue, and then out onto the Square I walk. The first thing I see is Kat talking to Bianca, stood in front of that very iconic fruit and veg stall, and all I hear is Bianca announcing to Kat, 'I've got a new boyfriend'. And on I walk, with Bianca then saying, 'Here's Terry'. And I'm like, 'What's Bianca saying my name for?' It was very weird.

"Having been filming for a few weeks now I feel very relaxed, but there are still moments when it's all very weird. I am really enjoying myself."

How did you feel when you were offered the role?
"When the part was offered to me, I did think that playing Bianca's boyfriend would be very funny and Terry sounded like a really great character to play. I've been doing stand-up for 25 years, so I thought, 'Why not do it and have a bit of a change?' And my wife said I'd be mad not to do it! EastEnders is such a British icon, arguably the biggest show on television."

As a comedian, do you keep your cast mates entertained between takes?
"Even though I'm a stand-up, it's actually the other cast who make me laugh, especially Michael French, who is hilarious. He's like, 'What do you mean I'm funny? You're funny'."

Did you have any preconceptions before joining the show?
"Before I started filming, I had seen a few interviews where people say how quickly things move on a soap, but it's not as fast as I was expecting. I think, because I'm a stand-up, I like the speed at which it goes, you get a good rhythm going."

What's it like working on scripted drama rather than your own material?
"The pace is great. I love the multi-camera stuff these days - it's brilliant. It turns over and I love it. Learning lines doesn't seem to be a problem. What I do is I get up every morning and I read my scripts through. I try and get in to work an hour and half early and read them again - even if I'm not doing them that day and then they still seem to lock in. I think it's been proven that children learn more in the mornings at school. Well, that's one of my theories, and that's what I do.

"I think, having a creative mind - not necessarily a good one, but that's for other's to decide - I'm glad to be able to continue with my stand-up work as well as playing Terry Spraggan. I'm very lucky to be able to do both. Also, stand-up gets lonely - just you up there sharing an evening with your audience then you're back in your car on your way home."

So how has the transition been as you've become part of a big team?
"I very happy to be part of this team and I believe in the team game, that's the reason I came in - and I shall keep performing to the best of my ability."

EastEnders star Terry Alderton has said that he expects his character Terry Spraggan to be harboring a secret.

The actor has played Bianca Butcher's boyfriend since last year, after he and his two children returned to Walford with her.

Speaking to Inside Soap, Alderton said: "Every time I get a new script, I start leafing through to see if something will be revealed about Spraggan.

"I don't think it will be too severe, but there must be something there. I do try to play him as though there might be.

"I often have people in the street coming up to me saying, 'There is something about you and it is going to come out'."

Alderton also admitted that he was enjoying his time working on the BBC soap and is happy to stay for as long as he can.

He said: "I love it here. The big draw was getting to work with Patsy Palmer (Bianca), because she is such a great actress and Bianca is such an iconic, dynamic character.

"The final thing that our boss Dominic Treadwell-Collins said to me before I started was that they wanted to change my character name from Bill to Terry.

"It was funny because when I was reading the initial set of scripts, I thought he should be called Terry too. Now I am so glad about that because I've got a bit of an ego. It's not a huge ego, but if I was walking down the street and people kept calling out 'Oi, Frankie!' or whatever, I'd be like, 'Nah'. But now it's all 'Terry! Terry!' and I can go, 'All right?'

"I reckon I will stay at EastEnders until they kick me out."

EastEnders star Terry Alderton has revealed that his character Terry Spraggan will be forced to act positive when he discovers his son TJ is going to be a dad.

Viewers know that TJ has got teenager Cindy Beale pregnant and next week's episodes of the soap see the rest of his family discover the secret after Ian Beale demands answers.

However, Alderton has revealed that Terry will do his best to support his son in the wake of the discovery.

Speaking to Soaplife, he said: "Terry is not fazed by much and he's a man who finds solutions.

"He takes it on the chin and thinks, 'What do we do about this? I know... Let's make the best of it and celebrate!'

"Terry is a good man. The pregnancy is a mistake and morally he probably thinks it's a bit wrong, but it is happening so he'll help them make it work."

Despite being desperate to support his son, Alderton revealed that Terry will be hurt when he discovers that TJ didn't initially confide in him.

Terry is left reeling by TJ's news

Alderton said: "This has been an ongoing thing with Terry and TJ. He keeps saying to the lad, 'Why didn't you tell me?'

"I think that's quite normal with teenagers and their parents. In reality, Terry is quite hurt by it, but he realises TJ kept it quiet because he didn't want to let him down."

Speaking about the future for Terry, Alderton added: "Dominic Treadwell-Collins is very excited about Terry's future. He explained to me that it's hard to play nice people because, first, you have to get the audience to invest in them, before things start to happen.

"And I reckon something is going to come out of the closet with Terry..."

EastEnders star Terry Alderton has announced that he is leaving the soap after less than a year as Terry Spraggan.

The actor revealed the news on his Twitter page today (April 24), confirming that show bosses have chosen to write out his character.

Alderton told fans that the decision was made due to Patsy Palmer's upcoming departure as Terry's on-off girlfriend Bianca Butcher.

He said: "So, I'm leaving EastEnders in July. Unfortunately Patsy leaving has changed things in the story. It's very sad but it's been a great ride."

Alderton also joked that the news is likely to rule Terry out as Lucy Beale's killer as the whodunnit storyline isn't expected to be resolved until February.
