Khalid - or Kal for short - is an ex-squaddie turned personal trainer, who has been tipped to set "tongues wagging and pulses racing" on the cobbles.
While show bosses aren't giving away any storyline details, Kal has been billed as a charming, roguish character. He also has a wandering eye and might upset some of the street's male residents.
Coronation Street's producer Stuart Blackburn commented: "I'm thrilled to welcome Jimi to Coronation Street. With credits that include East Is East, The Guru and Blood Diamond, getting him on board is a real coup.
"Jimi's character is going to have a swift impact on the lives of many in Weatherfield."
Mistry, who also previously played Dr Fonseca in EastEnders, will appear on screen from November.

Keep him away from Izzy, would be so predictable if she went off with one of Gary's mates

The identity of Liz McDonald's new man on Coronation Street has reportedly been revealed.
Newcomer Jimi Mistry will play the Rovers Return landlady's toyboy after being cast as Gary Windass's old army friend Khalid.
The East Is East star's character has been described as a charming, roguish personal trainer who sets "tongues wagging and pulses racing" when he arrives on the cobbles.
Liz will apparently become romantically involved with Khalid shortly after she returns to Weatherfield later this month. Actress Beverley Callard announced her comeback in May.
She said of her character's love life: "She's telling everyone she's single, but there is someone coming in for Liz. My God, it's so exciting, but I can't reveal anything else yet."
Liz takes over the Rovers upon her return after buying the pub with son Steve (Simon Gregson). Michelle Connor (Kym Lomas) will become co-landlady.

Probably not Sally's; Tim would love someone to take her off of his hands right now it seems. I wonder if there may be something between Khalid and Carla, especially if this Peter and Tina thing turns out to be true.

Coronation Street bosses have been casting for Liz McDonald's latest love interest this week.
Contrary to tabloid reports at the weekend, Liz's boyfriend will not be new character Khalid, played by Jimi Mistry.
We can confirm that Liz's new guy will instead be a separate new character.
Beverley Callard, who plays Liz, was this week in screen tests with a number of actors as show bosses searched for the right man to take on the part.
Callard will start work with the successful actor next week and while further details will be revealed in due course, Digital Spy understands that he will be a new regular for Coronation Street.
Liz returns to Weatherfield on Monday (October 14), having helped her son Steve to buy the Rovers Return.
The popular character was last seen in 2011, when she headed off to Spain following her partner Jim's arrest for armed robbery.

I would love to see that possible affair between Carla and Khalid. I don`t expect much of a future between Carla and Peter after Peter cheats on her.

Kal Nasir - Jimi Mistry - Coronation Street - ITV
Jimi Mistry, who plays Kal, said: "Kal is into bootcamps and that sort of thing. He’s the type of trainer who inspires people to be better. He’s quite a funny, cheeky little chap too."
Kal is set to cause a stir on The Street as he crosses paths with several residents, and he may even catch the attention of a few Weatherfield women.
"Kal's single when he comes in. He had a wife and she died, and he has kids too," said Jimi. "His son is in his late teens, so Kal was probably quite a young dad."
I’ve always had a soft spot for Coronation Street. Its tragi-comedy balance really suits my approach. I’ve always had a fondness for the show in that respect, I never thought there would be an opportunity to be in it!

When Kal meets Nick, he offers to use his personal training skills to help him along his road to recovery. But when Nick gives him short shrift, it isn't long before Kal gives him some home truths... Will Nick reconsider his offer?
Kal’s got a good temperament, but there’s definitely another side to this guy...

East Is East actor Jimi Mistry makes his Coronation Street debut this Sunday (December 8) as his character Khalid turns up at the Rovers Return.
Khalid, or Kal for short, is an old friend of Gary Windass who is hired by Dev Alahan as a personal trainer.
Here, Jimi chats about Khalid's arrival in Weatherfield and hints at future plans for the character.
What can you tell us about your introduction into Coronation Street?
"Kal is an ex-squaddie and old mate of Gary Windass. He's introduced to the street by him. When he arrives, Dev is really keen on getting into shape and Kal is the man to help him do that. Kal is introduced to the Street as a personal trainer."
Have you had to get fit for the role?
"Yeah, you've got to half look the part I suppose! I'm conscious of that as an actor. I've always enjoyed going to the gym and I try to keep reasonably fit. I've been putting myself through the paces. I've lost a good seven or eight kilos actually on the run-up. I didn't want to let myself down and the screen always adds a couple of pounds, doesn't it?
"I did a lot of high intensity training, which is quite in fashion at the minute - it's been great for shedding the pounds. Strangely enough that's what my character does too. I've been good on the food front too - being very careful about what I eat. Cutting out the enjoyable things in the week, but you have to have a cheat day at the weekend.
"You'll see that Kal is into boot camps and that sort of thing. He'll be the type of trainer who will inspire people to be better. He's quite a funny, cheeky little chap too."
As you were previously on EastEnders as Fred Fonseca, how do you feel about being on a soap again?
"It's been really good fun - I've really enjoyed it. EastEnders was a very long time ago now, back in 1998. I'm a man now, I was only a boy then! A lot has changed since then. It was very different back then for me. Coronation Street has always been described as having a family set-up and as soon as I arrived everyone was so friendly and helpful. Everyone in the green room sits around and chats which makes you feel at home really quickly."
What was it like to meet the cast?
"I knew a couple of people from over the years, so there were a few faces I knew. Jimmi Harkishin (Dev), who I'm working with a lot now, was in East is East with me a few years ago, so it was great to see him. I knew Ali King (Carla) and Charlie Condou (Marcus) from before too.
"Ben Price (Nick) was maybe the first to come up and introduce himself and said it was great to have me on board. Barbara Knox (Rita) welcomed me and asked how I was finding it. I've done a lot over the years, but nothing prepares you for walking into Coronation Street."
What made you want to take on a soap role again?
"Opportunity. I've done many, many things in my career - I've travelled a lot and a lot of things I've filmed have been abroad. I'm planning to get married again soon and I'm settling down, so this opportunity to act on a regular basis and be rooted was great. As an actor you have to locate the drama, and I wanted to be in this country. Coronation Street came up, both myself and the producer Stuart [Blackburn] thought it would be a good idea and it developed from there."
Which came first - you or the character?
"It was a bit of both. There was an opportunity for a new character. Agents talk to producers, producers talk to agents and it developed from there, really. It all happened relatively quickly. I liked the idea, Coronation Street liked the idea, so we went from there.
"There were a few other career opportunities in the pipeline, but I'd kind of put it out there that I wanted to base myself here. I was keen on seeing what was available, and you have to take the opportunity that you think will suit you best."
Was that prompted by the fact that you're about to get married?
"I think it has a lot to do with it. When you're younger the priority is taking everything that's out there and making a name for yourself. I have done quite a few different things and been all over the world, but I'm ready to work hard at being in one place now.
"Coronation Street is great for an actor's profile too - you're in people's living rooms day in, day out. One of the most important things for me is that I'm playing a real character here. Stuart said he wanted me to have fun with it and bring my own ideas to the table."
Who else are you going to be working with?
"I am working with Ben a lot. His character Nick's had this brain injury, so Kal is in the process of rehabilitating him and getting him back to his normal self. I think we're going to feel our way with Kal."
Is he a ladies' man?
"I think to a certain extent he is, yes. He had a wife and she died, and he has kids too. He's single when he comes in, though."
How close is Kal to Gary?
"They were together in the army so there's obviously some history there. We'll have to see if they decide to develop or do more with their friendship. I think Kal becomes quite pally with Dev quite quickly."
Where does he live?
"It's mentioned that he's been living with his family since his wife died, so they can help out with the kids. It's an undisclosed location, so at the moment I'm not living on the Street. Kal's son is around late teens, I think. Kal refers to him as being around 16, so Kal was probably quite a young dad. Kal refers to him as being quite demanding."
What more can you tell us about Kal?
"I think they were keen on bringing in a strong male character. He's got a good temperament, but there's definitely another side to the guy. Stuart wanted this question mark over Kal as to where he is from. For me that's great as it means I can be really free with the character."
Are you ready for the level of attention that comes from being in the show?
"Probably not! (Laughs). I'm very aware of it, though. If I'm not able to cope with it now, I never will be. I'm in the best position I've ever been in to be able to deal with it. We'll see how it goes. As soon as that first episode goes out, I know that people will start associating me with that role and I'm ready for that."
How much do you know about what's planned for Kal?
"I suspect we'll see another side of him - I think it's important to try and make the character multi-faceted. If that happens it will be testament to the character and the way it's written.
"I don't know too much about what's coming up - he's going to come in and do his thing and I think we'll be going from there. There's an idea that he will be opening a gym at some point - that will provide some comedy, I'm sure!"
How long would you like to stay in Corrie?
"If the last month is anything to go by, I'd be happy here as long as everything's going in the right direction. I'll be here as long as it's working. That's the best way to look at it."
Did you watch the show much growing up?
"When I was a child I tended to be outdoors playing sport - I didn't watch a great deal of TV. I did dip in and out of the soaps, though, and I've always had a soft spot for Coronation Street Its tragi-comedy balance really suits my approach. I've always had a fondness for the show in that respect - I never thought there would be an opportunity to be in it!"
Is there anyone you'd like more scenes with?
"It's funny with Corrie, because you will have a pocket of actors who you will work with a hell of a lot, and some you'll never have scenes with. I want a good scene with Norris! Some comedy with Norris would be classic."

Coronation Street star Jimi Mistry has revealed that joining the show wasn't a difficult decision for him.
The actor made his debut on the soap last weekend as Khalid, an old friend of Gary Windass's from the army.
Speaking on ITV's Lorraine today (December 13) about whether it was a difficult decision to join the show after previously focusing on films, Mistry said: "Not really, I have to be honest with you, because it's about the opportunity.
"I've done loads of things, a lot of travelling around the world doing this, that and the other.
"I met with Stuart [Blackburn] the producer and there was an opportunity to join the show. Corrie has been a big favourite of mine over the years. It gave me a great opportunity and the great thing about doing something like this is that the writing is so fantastic.
"As an actor, you get to work every day. It's a very rare thing for an actor and it's a gift to be given, to go into a show like Corrie. It wasn't really a tough decision for me."
Mistry also said that he is enjoying his time on the show, adding that his character is already proving popular with female residents.
He said: "Well, you know they were scoring me out of ten the other night in the episode!
"It's a man's dream to be a hit with the ladies, so we'll see what happens! I'm going in as a single guy, my wife died, I've got two kids, so anything could happen.
"It's been an incredible experience, it really has. I have to say, people say it's like one big family - from the cast to the production office to the make-up department, the costume... it's one big happy family. Everyone's made me feel so welcome, it's been a really good experience so far."

Kal's father is also coming in next year
I hope they get a decent Asian actor to play him. Remember Dev 's Uncle....what a disaster.
he has his eyes on leanne but stella has her eyes on him
Coronation Street newcomer Jimi Mistry has predicted that there will be fireworks on the cobbles if his character Kal Nazir gets together with Leanne Tilsley.
Kal has developed feelings for Leanne (Jane Danson) in recent weeks, but the situation could be awkward as he also has a friendship with Leanne's estranged husband Nick.
Next week, Nick (Ben Price) finally becomes suspicious over the obvious spark between the pair, forcing Kal to lie about his feelings when he is confronted by the Bistro owner.
Mistry told Soaplife: "Nick notices there's a lot of chemistry between Kal and Leanne, so he asks Kal outright if there's anything between them.
"Kal denies it - it's the only thing he can do in the circumstances. But the chemistry between Kal and Leanne is so strong, I don't know how long it will remain under wraps. Even if nothing is going on between them, their attraction is obvious."
Asked how Nick would react if Kal and Leanne did become a couple, he replied: "Very, very badly. Nick is still madly in love with Leanne, and Kal knows Nick pines after her."
Mistry also predicted that Kal will decide to stay single if he doesn't manage to win over Leanne. Viewers have already seen him reject Leanne's mum Stella Price.
"Kal might be a charmer, but he's not a player," Mistry said. "Leanne's the only woman he's interested in. If it doesn't work out, he'll just carry on with his life rather than go after another woman."
Coronation Street continues tonight (March 26) at 7.30pm on ITV.
Coronation Street's Kal Nazir and Leanne Tilsley make a big sacrifice next week after spending the night together for the first time.
Although the pair know they make a great match, they quickly decide to call things off again as they can't bear to hurt Leanne's estranged husband Nick.
Here, Jimi Mistry - who plays Kal - explains why the new couple can't be together.
Next week, Nick tells Kal that he's getting back with Leanne, as she has given him false hope. How does Kal react?
"Kal manages to keep his counsel when Nick tells him that Leanne has decided to give him another chance, but he is feeling frustrated. He understands why Leanne hasn't told Nick the truth, but he also knows he can't carry on like this. He tells her that they need to tell Nick the truth now."
Is Kal worried that they could get back together for real?
"Kal knows that Leanne loved Nick and he also knows she still really cares about him and doesn't want to break his heart. I guess in the back of Kal's mind he must be worried that Leanne might get back with Nick out of sympathy, but he does know that she really likes him too.
"Kal can understand why Leanne is being careful around Nick as he is quite vulnerable at the moment, but he also believes that they need to tell Nick now as it's unfair to give him mixed signals."
Kal then pushes Nick too hard in the gym, doesn't he?
"Yes, I think Kal is feeling a mixture of emotions at the moment. Part of him feels guilty for going behind Nick's back with Leanne, but the other part is feeling frustrated that they can't be together openly. It's the frustration which takes over and Kal winds Nick up during a training session at the gym, but this has its repercussions and Nick ends up punching Steve..."
Does Kal feel guilty afterwards?
"Kal is really ashamed. Sharif tells him he was unprofessional and Kal can only agree with him. He knows he was in the wrong and is appalled by his own actions."
How does Leanne react when she hears what happened?
"Leanne is furious. She confronts Kal and angrily orders him to stay away from both her and Nick in future. Kal is gutted."
How does Kal try to resolve things?
"Appalled at his own behaviour, Kal tells Nick that he's sorry for pushing him too hard and tells him it would be best if he found another trainer, but Nick is having none of it and insists Kal joins him for dinner with Leanne in the Bistro.
"The dinner is extremely awkward for both Kal and Leanne, and it's made even worse because Nick is oblivious to everything that is going on."
Why does Kal go to Leanne's flat afterwards?
"He can't stand Leanne being angry at him and he has such a strong need to be near her. He calls around and kisses her and tells her that he can't keep away any longer. Leanne kisses him back, which is a relief."
They spend the night together, but what's the atmosphere like in the morning?
"They are so loved up. This is something Kal and Leanne have waited a while for, and they've finally given into their urges. It's a night that's about them and not Nick, and definitely something they both needed to get back on track."
But then Nick calls round unexpectedly…
"Yes, it's a bit of a shock for Kal and Leanne! Poor Eva, who is already in shock at seeing Kal and Leanne together, then has to spin a story to Nick. It's also a bit of an eye-opener for them both that Nick can't find out accidentally as it would break him."
Oh no Steve get's punched! He seems to be in the wrong place wrong time again.

I hope it makes him smarten his act up and stops acting daft.
Coronation Street star Jimi Mistry has hinted that his character Kal Nazir could have a dark side.
Viewers were first introduced to Kal last year when regular character Dev Alahan hired him as a personal trainer.
More recently he has grown closer to Leanne Tilsley, but the pair will sacrifice their new romance next week for the sake of Leanne's former husband Nick.
Speaking to The Sun about his character Kal, Mistry said: "There's certainly an edge to him and it's just when it will come out.
"With this whole thing with Leanne and Nick you'll see that side of him. There are some confrontations ahead, that's for sure. You might be surprised by him."
Mistry also admitted that he sticks to a strict exercise regime in order to stay in shape for the role. Tonight's (April 23) episode of the soap will see Kal involved in a stripping scene at the Bistro.
He said: "You have to look the part — it wouldn't be good if I was out of breath on screen. I get in the gym, get on and get out - that's my motto!
"I need to work hard and I try to exercise every day. After a long day at work it's quite challenging when all you want to do is go home, but I circuit-train and I've started doing a lot of running."
Speaking about his wife, Strictly Come Dancing star Flavia, Mistry added: "She puts me to shame. We go training together when we can. She cracks the whip a bit, but I do it to her too.
"We went to the gym last weekend and I put her through her paces. You've got to believe what you're playing!"

I think he looks fine and is an attractive guy, but muscley and "buff" he is not! Was that phrase repeated ad nauseum to try and convince us? :searchme:
Very cringe-making scene

Definately not in good shape for a trainer
Coronation Street star Jimi Mistry has promised that there are "fireworks" in store once Leanne Tilsley's shady past is exposed to his on-screen family.
Mistry's character Kal Nazir has found love with Leanne, but her first meeting with Kal's mother Yasmeen goes badly wrong this week as her past mistakes come back to haunt her.
In a dramatic scene, Leanne's estranged husband Nick deliberately sabotages her big moment by informing Kal's family that she used to work as a prostitute - leaving Yasmeen convinced that Leanne is the wrong woman for her son.
Speaking on ITV's This Morning today (July 2), Mistry explained: "He's aware of it - she's worked on the streets but that gives her a fire, that's her character. The old Leanne Battersby was a real character back in the day. I think Kal accepts that, but the family is a different thing.
"I'm trying to get approval from [Yasmeen] for Leanne, and then this revelation comes out through Nick. It's not the best start, put it that way - there's fireworks!"
Sair Khan, who plays Kal's daughter Alya, added: "It's explosive when we find out. When we were filming those scenes, I was literally shocked!"
Mistry also explained that approval from his family is important to Kal, especially as his relationship with Alya and his teenage son Zeedan hasn't always been easy.
He said: "I've got an interesting relationship with both Alya and my son, who will be starting later on. I was away a lot when they were being brought up. I was in the army, so we have this estranged sort of relationship.
"I'm always very cautious about how she'll accept Leanne. [She seems] to accept that, which is a real nice thing for Kal but then of course there's going to be this whole other stuff."
Mistry also stayed coy when This Morning host Phillip Schofield suggested that Kal could turn out to be the real troublemaker in the Nazir family.
He laughed: "There's lots of things that could possibly happen, I'm telling you!"
Coronation Street airs Kal and Leanne's latest setback on Friday (July 4) at 7.30pm on ITV.

I really don't like them as a couple
Do not like Nick. How mean is he. Kal must not be fasting otherwise Leanne would have known about ...not even water!
Kal must not be fasting otherwise Leanne would have known about ...not even water!
When Kal and Leanne were going out for a meal on her birthday, Kal asked Leanne not to tell his family that he'd be eating. So he obviously doesn't always observe Ramadan when his family aren't around.
I thought Kal lived with his family. If so he would have to get up about 2am to eat until 3am to observe the fast. Then would not be able to eat or drink until 9.23. If he was not fasting his family would know.

I don't know enough about it to have an opinion, so I'm just going by what Kal himself said in a recent episode. Maybe he was going to let himself off the hook that one time because it was Leanne's birthday?

Jimi Mistry is to leave Coronation Street later in 2015 with show bosses promising a "huge secret plot twist" for his character, gym owner Kal Nazir.
Mistry, who has featured on the ITV soap since December 2013, said today of his departure: "When I was told about this storyline I felt it was a brilliant way to say goodbye to Kal and I am really looking forward to filming my departure scenes.
"I have had a fantastic 18 months on Coronation Street but I never saw myself staying around forever. My life is in London and I enjoy playing a variety of roles.
"I want to thank Stuart Blackburn and the team for giving me the opportunity to be part of such a fantastic show. This is the longest I have ever been in one job and I have enjoyed it immensely."
Producer Stuart Blackburn added: "Kal’s departure will be a big part of the fantastic spring and summer of drama on Coronation Street.
"We discussed the plot idea with Jimi and we all feel it is a great storyline which will have huge ramifications for the Nazirs and Leanne going forward.
“Jimi is a talented actor and an asset to the show and we will be sorry to see him go, but this is a fantastic exit storyline there are still many twists and turns for the character in the coming months.”
Kal is currently in a relationship with Leanne Tilsley, with recent plotlines having seen the introduction of members of his family including daughter Alya (Sair Khan). Prior to Coronation Street, Mistry was previously a regular on BBC1 soap EastEnders, where he played Dr Fred Fonseca.

Kal and his new family have been dire. And the chicken storyline has been awful, neither funny or interesting. Kal has dragged down Leanne too. Overall, I won't miss his character. Leanne's character has gone downhill for a while now - since they've paired her up with Kal, she's gone dull. She had more of a spark when she was with Peter and Nick.
I don't like Leanne with Kal either so I'm looking forward to them splitting. I wouldn't mind her reuniting with Nick down the line.
I think the Nazirs get too much criticism and feel they just need better writing. The chicken story would have been fine as a short-term comedy plot. Where's Yasmeen these days?
Things are looking up for Leanne Battersby in next week’s Coronation Street when Kal Nazir proposes to her.
Poor Leanne hasn’t exactly been lucky in love but she’s finally found happiness with Kal, despite his son Zeedan making things awkward for them.
She’s knocked for six when Kal leads her out to the Rovers back yard and goes down on one knee.
But he’s annoyed to discover he’s forgotten the ring and telling Leanne not to move, sets off to find it as Leanne comes to terms with what’s happening.
Kal rushes back to Leanne, explaining he went home to fetch the ring so he could propose and she’s thrilled.
However, with news that Kal is leaving are they actually going to get their happy ever after or is it going to end in tears?
As Jimi Mistry is leaving, it will end in tears .. I wish they would make exit storylines rather less predictable .. outgoing characters either leave because they cheated or they get killed off :(
