With the Roscoe clan continuing to shake up life in Hollyoaks, Digital Spy recently caught up with actor Ayden Callaghan - who plays eldest brother Joe - to hear more about what's coming up for the family.

As the unofficial patriarch of the Roscoes, fans have already seen Joe trying to keep his younger siblings out of trouble. However, events may be spiralling out of control in the next fortnight as Doctor Browning continues to pile on pressure over their debt, as well as turning sinister with Joe's fiancée Lindsey.

Read on to find out what Ayden had to say about all things Hollyoaks and Joe!

How are you finding life at Hollyoaks so far?
"It's been a while for us now, as we started in mid-March and had to keep it quiet for some time. The worst part was probably having such a great time and not being able to tell anybody about it!

"It's really a pleasure to get up in the morning and come to work here at Hollyoaks. I've always been terrible at getting up in the morning, but now I'm bouncing out of bed and into work first thing in the morning. I'm loving every second of it, because it's a very vibrant and energetic place to work."

When did you first hear about the role?
"Interestingly enough, I was very close to getting a previous role on the show and got down to the final screen test, but that didn't work out. Obviously that was for the best in the end, but I wasn't to know that at the time!

"I remember that I was in a pub last September with a friend at Muswell Hill and he told me that he was auditioning for a new family in Hollyoaks. I hadn't heard anything about it, so I emailed my agent that night hoping that I could get seen. I was told that I wasn't being brought in for this one and was gutted, but several weeks later, my agent said, 'Ignore me - they want to see you tomorrow morning!'"

What was the audition process like after that?
"I had a meeting the next morning with the casting director Kevin Riddle in London, and was told at lunchtime that they wanted to see me again in Liverpool the next day. I was in Liverpool all day and met some of the guys who became my future on-screen brothers.

"A few weeks later, I was back in Liverpool for a similar process, but it was just with the guys that you see on screen now. We did some workshops and worked with different scripts, and then just before Christmas we found out that we'd been successful. It was a long process, but they were obviously being very particular about finding the right actors and getting the chemistry right. I think that's proved to be very successful and hopefully the results speak for themselves."

How do you describe Joe?
"I think Joe is your alpha-male type - he's red-blooded and passionate. When we were in the development stages, the characters didn't have names but we were given animals to think about. Joe's animal was a lion, so that sums him up - he's powerful, he can be dangerous but also incredibly protective of his family, as a head lion would be.

"On the surface, Joe is pretty straightforward - there's no nonsense and you absolutely know where you stand, because he'll tell you! But there's a lot of stuff under the surface and a lot of things that have happened in Joe's past, which have led him up to this point. I would say he's battling himself a lot to keep the beast inside tame.

"One of the things we've talked about is that Joe is just one red mist away from the nick! But having met Lindsey and fallen in love, he's got something to better himself for and try to work towards. Lindsey very much keeps him on a level ground. Without Lindsey, I think Joe could be incredibly destructive to himself and to anybody around him…"

Will we hear more about Joe's past over time?
"Well, the creative team have been fantastic in creating such wonderful characters for us, and we've spoken a lot about their history. That history informs what we do on screen and how the characters react to different situations. There is a colourful past there with Joe, and I'm sure in time there will be elements of that coming up to the surface and into storylines. Obviously I can't go into too much detail, but I think there's plenty of scope for love, drama and laughs."

Next week, the Roscoes hold a topless car wash to raise some cash as they still owe money to Doctor Browning. Was that fun or embarrassing to film?!
"It was fun as it serves a comedic purpose in the show. It's a bit of light-hearted entertainment which is important for a show like Hollyoaks. You get to see the three brothers stripped to the waist with the ladies and having a great time!

"There is an element of embarrassment - of course there is! I don't think any of us love ourselves that much! (Laughs.) At the same time, I do spend a lot of time at the gym and work hard at my physique, so if I see that I've got to take my top off in a scene, it's not something that frightens me."

When Browning turns sinister with Lindsey, does she tell Joe about it?
"Lindsey actually keeps that to herself for a little while, as otherwise Joe would be straight in there to sort it out! That's probably why Lindsey keeps quiet, because she knows that his way of solving problems is usually to go through them like a wrecking ball!

"Obviously it's a new job for her at the hospital and Browning is her boss, so it probably wouldn't be the best career move to have her caveman of a boyfriend come storming in and ripping doors off the hinges!"

What kind of reaction have you seen from the fans since the Roscoes arrived?
"Even before the first episode aired, our castings were released to the press and I could see just how active and passionate the fans of this show are. It's something that I haven't experienced before, even though I've been on the soap circuit in the past. The show recently won a number of prizes at the Soap Awards, and that's down to having an incredible fanbase.

"The fans really have been overwhelming with their generosity and their support. It's lovely to receive those messages - and having social media tools gives you a quick link to the viewers, which is lovely.

"People seem to be getting on board with the Roscoes in a huge way, and I think having someone like Gillian Taylforth - who's a British TV icon - on board certainly doesn't hurt!"

How are you getting along with your on-screen brothers?
"We're getting along great. Fabrizio (Ziggy), Charlie Clapham (Freddie) and Alfie (Jason) live together, and then myself and Charlie Wernham (Robbie) also live together separately. We did discuss all five of us living together to begin with, but I said that I might end up killing someone! (Laughs.)

"As lovely as they all are, I'm an old lion and need my space. When I'm at home, the remote control is mine and the TV is mine, and everybody would have had to obey those rules! I said that it was probably better for me to disappear into my own cave, or have someone come along with me who's happy to be my little flunkey! Charlie Wernham was first to the post on that and couldn't wait!

"We do all get along great and I think the chemistry does come across on screen. That's a testament to the casting department at Hollyoaks and the producer Bryan Kirkwood. From day one, we've clicked and all of the love and fun you see on screen is very evident in real life. We hang out together most days and have a really, really good time."

Ayden as Joe.

Has your previous experience on Emmerdale helped you with Hollyoaks?
"Being on a soap previously has helped, because I knew what to expect in terms of what it would be like day-to-day and everything that comes along with it. Emmerdale is a great show to be part of with great people working there and great fans, but they're not as active online, as the demographic there is slightly older. The fans of Hollyoaks are much more active and interactive with you, so that's something different."

As you have that experience, do the other Roscoe lads approach you for advice?
"Yes, the boys do sometimes. I'm not here to be their dad as they need to make their own way, but they do come to me for advice and say that it's nice having me about. If I feel like there's something I need to tell them, I'm not backward in coming forward with them. They're great, talented lads and I know that if I wasn't here, they'd be getting on just fine."

Hollyoaks producers have revealed one of the soap's Christmas storylines.

A member of the Roscoe family will get married during the festive period.

However, producers are remaining tight-lipped about which family member will be getting hitched.

"We can't tell you who's getting ready to tie the knot, but we can reveal that one party doesn't know their spouse-to-be as well as they thought," reads a statement on the Channel 4 website.

The website teases three possible couples who could be involved in the storyline.

The first is Joe and Lindsey. The pair have been engaged for a while and recently lost their baby when Lindsey was involved in a car accident.

Freddie and Sinead are also in the running, despite being a fairly new couple.

Also under consideration is mother of the Roscoe clan Sandy, who could marry Fraser.

Hollyoaks has ended the mystery of Joe Roscoe's fate this week as the show's latest episode revealed that the mechanic is still alive.

In the aftermath of the council flats demolition, Joe is currently in a coma with show villain Fraser Black (Jesse Birdsall) keeping a close eye on him, but whether he'll ever get back home to the village remains to be seen.

Digital Spy recently caught up with Ayden Callaghan, who plays Joe, for an exclusive chat about the storyline and what could be in store next for the Roscoes.

How did you feel when the producers first told you about this storyline?
"It was a surprise but it was also really exciting. I'd gone up for a chat about storylines and our executive producer Bryan told me that he had some news, so that's when I heard about what was planned. It sounded like a really big and dramatic storyline, so of course I was really pleased with that.

"Once we started getting the scripts through, we could really see the potential in the story and the drama of it all. It's great to be involved with."

How far in advance did you find out?
"It was probably a couple of months before we started shooting the scenes, so we had a really good chat about what was coming up at that point. I was prepared for quite a while that this would be happening down the line."

What were the stunt scenes like to film in the council flats?
"Those scenes were amazing. It was like being in an action movie or being Bruce Willis in Die Hard for the day! Obviously we've got a fantastic crew and writers who come up with great stuff and we also had a terrific director, Steve Brett, who worked on that block.

"It was one of those things where the scripts came out and we just knew it was going to look really good on screen. Even before we'd seen the rushes, we just had a really good feeling about it. We were all aware of what a big storyline it was and how much it would set up a lot of great stuff to come afterwards."

Joe in the council flats stunt

What can you tell us about what's coming up next?
"At the minute we know that Joe is alive, but we don't know for how long and really at this stage we don't know whether he's going to wake up. Even if Joe does wake up, we don't know where he's going to go or what he's going to do. It's all open at the moment!"

As you haven't been filming, how have you been spending your new-found spare time?
"I've spent a bit of time back down in London and I've also had some time away. I've been looking at some other avenues and basically just taking stock of everything that's happened in the past year, because it's all been a bit of a whirlwind. I've enjoyed time with my girlfriend, my family and my friends, as well just keeping myself fit, healthy and sharp."

Joe's fate was discussed a lot among the fans, especially on Twitter. What did you make of the reaction?
"As soon as the episode aired, my Twitter went into meltdown and there was a huge reaction to it. It was maybe bigger than any of us expected, which was really flattering and humbling. People seemed genuinely upset, cross and angry - all of those things you want people to feel because that means they're involved with the character and the story.

"Afterwards I was still getting hundreds of messages every week about it. Some people never believed Joe was dead, but a lot of people genuinely thought that he was and they were sad about it. The response has been never-ending and it just goes to show what an impact the story made on people.

"Now that we've seen that Joe is in a pretty bad way in a coma, I'm getting lots of messages about that too. People are happy that he's still alive, but we don't quite know what's going to happen yet."

Some fans feared that Joe could be dead

Was it difficult not to let the truth slip out?
"It was difficult not to respond, but I didn't want to spoil anything for any of the viewers. I just had to read those messages and acknowledge them in my mind but not respond. I'd like to say thanks to everybody for their response and their support, as it's been really great."

If Joe regained consciousness, how would he feel about all of the lies Freddie has been telling Lindsey about him running off with another woman?
"From what we've seen of Joe so far, he's a guy who loves his family and desperately tries to do the right thing. There's certain things about himself that he's tried to keep in check, and we've certainly seen flashes of a darker side to him. If Joe woke up and found out what Freddie has been doing, he'd see it as the ultimate betrayal. It's bad enough to try to make something happen with your brother's girlfriend, so Joe would feel incredibly betrayed and angry about that.

"If Joe also found out that Freddie had told these lies to get what he wanted from the love of Joe's life, I really don't think there's any telling what he might do - but I certainly wouldn't want to be in Freddie's shoes, that's for sure!

"We can't forget Fraser and Grace either, so you might well see the Joe of previous years that people have only alluded to so far. He'd be like a dangerous wild animal, and it'd certainly make for some exciting and pretty explosive storylines."

Have you kept watching the show for the aftermath of the stunt?
"Definitely - I always keep up with it because I've got a lot of friends there and I think the show is in great shape. I watch it with my character bias and think, 'How could Freddie do that to Joe?', but then of course there's an element of Freddie trying to protect other people's feelings in his own strange clumsy way!

"Freddie is trying to do the right thing, but he's also driven by his own selfish wants. The whole thing is heading for a car crash, because if you're that selfish, things are going to blow up in your face eventually. They're doing a great job of showing the juxtaposition of those two feelings with Freddie. It's a mess, but it's what people enjoy watching!

"This week also saw John Omole's character leave and I thought his stuff with Steven Roberts [George] was a beautiful piece of work. There's great stuff across the board at the moment and I tend to Sky+ the show and watch a few episodes at a time."

Your on-screen brother Charlie Wernham (Robbie) is also currently involved in a big story with John Paul and Finn…
"I'm a big fan of James Sutton [who plays John Paul]. I remember when he was first in Hollyoaks while I was doing Emmerdale, and people were talking about this young lad and the great work he was producing. He's carried that straight on through. When he went into Emmerdale he was fantastic in that and now he's back in Hollyoaks doing some incredibly raw, honest and mature work.

"Little Charlie Wernham is a real talent and a very gifted young man. It's nice to see him involved in some stuff that he's really got his teeth into. He's a young lad and it's a sensitive subject matter, but I think he's dealing with it incredibly well and he's bringing a real honesty and depth to that role.

"What's great about that is we're seeing different sides to Robbie as well. There's a lot of layers there and Charlie's a terrific young actor so he's very capable of exploring that. I'm enjoying watching it and the response has been huge, which tells you everything that you need to know."

Hollyoaks star Ayden Callaghan has revealed Joe Roscoe is set to form an unlikely alliance with Trevor Royle.

Joe, played by Ayden, has been in a coma since Trevor's girlfriend Grace Black tried to kill him in January.

But when he finally regains consciousness next month he blames Grace's father Fraser and decides to team up with Trevor (Greg Wood) to try and take down the village's gangster number one.

Fraser, played by Jesse Birdsall, is set to be murdered in a whodunnit style plot next month, and this new alliance could make Joe and Trevor chief suspects.

Ayden told All About Soap: "It's kind of like that saying - my enemy's enemy is my friend. All Joe's chips are in and as far as he's concerned, it's do or die. He doesn't have a lot of options left at this time.

"He takes a big gamble to form an allegiance with Trevor to get rid of their mutual problem - Fraser - because Joe knows full well that in his current state he's not going to be able to do it on his own."

On how Trevor responds, the actor added: "I can't possibly reveal that! He and Joe have a heart-to-heart, and I'm not going to give away too much, but Trevor fills in a good number of blanks for Joe. He certainly sets up other problems he has to deal with emotionally and physically."

Trevor will reveal to Joe the lies Joe's brother Freddie has been telling his fiancee Lindsey Butterfield and the rest of his family since his disappearance.

But Ayden revealed: "Joe's more about keeping his friends close and his enemies closer at this stage. Lindsey is the love of Joe's life. And a lot of the stuff that has happened while he's been in a coma is going to hit him further down the line.

"Joe needs to get rid of Fraser - that's his immediate concern. Maybe his issues with Lindsey and Freddie, and Grace and Trevor, will take a back seat - but none of those are forgotten, don't worry."

Hollyoaks has revealed the second victim of its deadly Halloween week, with Joe Roscoe becoming the latest big-name character to bow out from the show.

The popular mechanic lost his life when the fire started by Cameron Campbell spread to the mechanics of the ferris wheel at the Halloween Spooktacular, leaving Joe and Mercedes McQueen in terrible danger as they were stuck at the top.

Fortunately, Mercedes managed to get herself to safety when the emergency services arrived with a cherry picker, but Joe wasn't so lucky when the ferris wheel generator exploded and he was forced to jump for his own safety.

Not quite the action man he fancied himself as, poor Joe found himself clinging to the edge of the cherry picker but tragedy struck when he lost his grip and fell to the ground. Definitely an 'ouch' moment!

Joe was later pronounced dead at the hospital when doctors confirmed that he was only being kept alive by machines.

The news was a particularly cruel blow for Mercedes, who'd just decided to forgive Joe's past mistakes and accept his marriage proposal.

Viewers also saw Joe's brothers Freddie and Darren left distraught at his hospital bedside. Although one hated him half the time and the other didn't have much to do with him, so don't get too upset on that front!

Ayden Callaghan joined the cast of Hollyoaks as Joe in May 2013 and has been involved in some of the show's most dramatic storylines of the past three years.

Speaking today, Ayden commented: "I enjoyed my time at Hollyoaks greatly - from the early days of the Roscoe family's arrival and winning 'Best Soap' at the end of our first year, to filming the Halloween 21st anniversary stunt, which was fantastic.

"I'll miss working with all of the Roscoes including Gillian Taylforth who played our mum. My favourite moments, without doubt, are the days laughing with the Roscoes on set, the demolition stunt when Grace trapped Joe in the council flats, the Fraser Black storylines and the New Year episodes when Freddie and Lindsey's affair was revealed.

"Thank you to [executive producer] Bryan, the writing team and all those at Hollyoaks for three and a half years I won't forget, and of course to the fans for their tears, laughter and ongoing support."
