Dancing on Ice will come to an end after its 2014 series, it has been announced.

The ITV celebrity skating competition will air its ninth and final series next year, ITV confirmed in a statement.

ITV's Director of Television Peter Fincham said: "Dancing on Ice has been a firm favourite with viewers since it launched eight years ago and we all have every intention of going out on a high next year."

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean said: "Next year will be the 30th anniversary of 'Bolero' and our Olympic gold medal in Sarajevo and for us, it seemed a fitting time to say goodbye to Dancing on Ice.

"We wanted to go out on a high. We have loved every minute of the eight series and we're determined to make our final series the best ever. It has been a real pleasure to work on one of the UK's biggest and best loved entertainment shows, and we are extremely proud of the skating legacy that we have built up since the show launched in 2006.

"We will miss it hugely and would like to thank all the viewers and fans for their continued support."

Torvill and Dean added that they do not plan to retire from skating for good, and that the series will be followed by a final tour.

"We will not be retiring or hanging up our skates – skating will very definitely continue for us both," the duo added. "There will also be a final Dancing on Ice live UK arena tour, starting in March next year. We are already planning it and there will be some great surprises for audiences across the country."

Peter Fincham added: "Torvill and Dean are the most successful ice dancing partnership of our generation and brought huge integrity, skill and professionalism to the show and with their departure, it feels like the series has reached its natural end.

"It is always a difficult decision to say goodbye to successful and long-running shows, but with change comes opportunity and the chance for us to bring in new and exciting programmes for our viewers.

"ITV would like to thank Jayne and Chris for their fantastic contribution to each and every series."

Dancing On Ice's final series will air in January 2014.

I think they should do a Champion of Champion series with old contestants - one of the main problems with the series is that they've not been able to get many good people for the past few years!

Dancing on Ice may survive after Torvill and Dean's departure from the series, according to a report.

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean recently announced they will leave the show after the 2014 edition, with ITV boss Peter Fincham confirming the programme's end following their exit.

However, producers are said to be thinking about continuing the show with new professional coaches, according to The Sun.

A source said: "The show is still massive for ITV.

"But when Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean decided to go, it gave Peter Fincham a reason to get rid of it.

"Yet many at ITV Studios think that was the wrong decision. Jayne and Christopher leaving is a big deal and it will be incredibly hard to replace them - but not impossible.

"To say that they are the only telegenic skating pros who could fill the role would be wrong. So watch this space."

Dancing on Ice reportedly costs around £1 million per episode, while this year's first eliminated celebrity Pamela Anderson cost £250,000.

"It's fine to bin a show if it is pulling in only a couple of million viewers in prime time," the source added.

"But the world is not awash with shows that rate like Dancing On Ice does."

Phillip Schofield and Christine Bleakley are expected to return to host the proposed final series next year.

Dancing On Ice is going out with a bang – by reuniting some of the show’s best-loved skaters for an all-star send-off. A host of celebs from past series will lace up their skates for the January special. Vanilla Ice, Jorgie Porter, both pictured, Ray Quinn, Todd Carty, Chris Fountain, Kyran Bracken and current champ Beth Tweddle are being lined up to return. The plan has been given the seal of approval by show professionals Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean, who are calling it quits after next year’s series. A DOI source said: “Torvill and Dean said they wanted the final series to be the best, so what better way to treat fans than by bringing back some of their favourites? “It won’t just be people who’ve won. The idea is to bring people back who made an impression — whether they made a decent fist of it or not. “Some have gone on to be quite good skaters, so it will be interesting to see if they have what it takes to win.” Stars are being contacted now, with five-figure fees being offered.
