Kirsty's ex has spent the past few years in jail and is being billed as a new bad boy for EastEnders.

While in prison, Carl shared a cell with Derek Branning and the two men became close friends.

Upon his release, Carl makes a number of attempts to make contact with Kirsty but is left frustrated when she ignores him.

Once he has tracked Kirsty down, Carl's early scenes on Albert Square see him determined to get back some money that he feels is rightfully his. However, he also soon makes it clear that he wants Kirsty back.

Speaking of his new role, Coonan commented: "EastEnders has been a part of my life since I was 12 years old. I even remember talking about the storylines in school playgrounds in Tottenham and I am very happy and proud to now be a small part of its life."

EastEnders' executive producer Lorraine Newman added: "It's wonderful to have Daniel Coonan joining us in Walford to play Carl White. Oozing confidence and with a dangerous edge, will Kirsty be able to resist his bad boy charms for long, or can Max save her from the lure of the dark side?"

Coonan's previous screen credits include parts in Silent Witness, Dancing on the Edge, Mayday, Inside Men and Law & Order: UK.

EastEnders newcomer Carl White leaves Ian Beale fearing for his life next week.

Carl, played by actor Daniel Coonan, is the ex-boyfriend of Kirsty Branning (Kierston Wareing). He also has a connection to the late Derek Branning as the pair used to share a prison cell together.

Viewers will see Carl make his arrival in Walford in search of Derek's missing £10,000, which he feels is rightfully his.

Cunning and ruthless, Carl soon finds out that Ian (Adam Woodyatt) stole the cash from Derek's lockbox and used it to set up his new restaurant business.

Carl plays dumb in his early interactions with Ian, but later catches the businessman off-guard by turning very nasty indeed. With a shocking venom descending over him, Carl declares that he wants Ian's blood.

Ian is then left completely terrified as Carl informs him that he was always prone to bouts of violence, but after spending years in prison with murderers and thugs, he got even worse! What does Carl have planned for Ian?

Kirsty, meanwhile, is shocked to see Carl on Albert Square and wastes little time before warning everyone that he is very bad news…

Carl tells Kirsty that he's changed.

EastEnders bosses announced Coonan's casting last month, billing Carl as a new bad boy for the soap.

Speaking at the time, Coonan commented: "EastEnders has been a part of my life since I was 12 years old. I even remember talking about the storylines in school playgrounds in Tottenham, and I am very happy and proud to now be a small part of its life."

EastEnders airs Carl's first scenes on Thursday, June 20 at 7.30pm on BBC One.

EastEnders' new recruit Daniel Coonan has claimed that his character Carl White is as bad as some of the soap's most memorable villains.

Carl is the ex-boyfriend of Kirsty Branning (Kierston Wareing) and arrives on Albert Square next week following a stint in prison.

Show bosses have billed Carl as a major new bad boy for EastEnders, and his time in Walford gets off to a dramatic start as he leaves Ian Beale fearing for his life with some sinister threats.

Coonan told Inside Soap of his new role: "There's that old saying about the Devil having all the best tunes. Carl is so exciting to play because you just never know what he's going to do next. The Square has seen some major villains over the years, and Carl is right up there with them."

Asked whether he wants Carl to be as devious as Dirty Den, the actor replied: "Yes, definitely! If you're playing a bad guy, you want spicy storylines. Carl is pretty nasty, and he has a dark way of going about things. He's completely unpredictable. But I like to think Carl has some redeeming qualities - I don't want him to be a total arch-villain."

Coonan teased that Carl may even clash with the Square's resident hardman Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) over the next few weeks.

He said: "It's very likely. I've just filmed my first scene with Steve McFadden, and it's genuinely the only time I've ever felt nervous. So far we've only done one scene, but there are more coming up. You can only have so many alpha males in one place before it kicks off."

EastEnders airs Carl's first scenes on Thursday, June 20 at 7.30pm on BBC One.

EastEnders newcomer Daniel Coonan has said that his character Carl White has similarities to a Shakespearean villain.

Coonan made his debut as Carl on last night's (June 20) instalment of the show when he turned up in search of the late Derek Branning.

Speaking in a video released on the official EastEnders website, Coonan also explained that Carl will be on two missions as he settles into life in the square. The first is to get his money back from Ian Beale, and the second is to get back together with his ex-girlfriend Kirsty Branning.

Coonan revealed as well that Carl will be clashing with Phil Mitchell and Max Branning, and said he thinks the residents of Albert Square should be wary of his alter ego as he is used to getting what he wants.

EastEnders continues tonight (June 21) at 8.00pm on BBC1.

EastEnders' new bad boy Carl White turns even nastier with Ian Beale next week.

Carl (Daniel Coonan) decides to teach Ian a lesson after the restaurant owner tries to stand up to him.

The drama begins when Ian (Adam Woodyatt) discovers that Carl used to be in a relationship with Kirsty Branning and desperately wants her back.

Wanting Carl to leave him alone, Ian (Adam Woodyatt) comes up with a plan to use this information to his advantage.

When Carl pays another visit to the restaurant, Ian implies that he could tell Kirsty about his attempts to extort money from him.

Unfortunately for Ian, his plan backfires as Carl shows he means business and threatens to harm him…

Kirsty Branning goes with Carl White to visit his mother Nora on EastEnders tonight (July 23).

Whilst she is there, Nora tells Kirsty (Kierston Wareing) that it would break her heart if she and Carl (Daniel Coonan) ever broke up, prompting Kirsty to keep her in the dark and promise that will never happen.

However, when Kirsty leaves Carl and Nora alone, Nora becomes extremely menacing with her son, telling him that he's a pathetic excuse for a man like his father.

She also tells him that he better treat Kirsty well and never let her go, while digging her nails hard into his hand.

EastEnders star Daniel Coonan has said that viewers will see the full extent of his character Carl White's manipulative nature in upcoming episodes of the soap.

Phil Mitchell's life will be left hanging in the balance next week after Carl crashes his car on the way to a dodgy deal.

Coonan said to the Radio Times: "You get to see how nuts Carl is. He doesn't care if Phil dies yet he risks damaging himself as well.

"He sees Phil as top boy and he wants to take over his turf, so he realises he will have to get rid of him."

After the accident, Carl will put love rival Max in the frame, leading him to be arrested for attempted murder.

Coonan said: "In Carl's head, he's coming in on a white horse to save Kirsty from a bad marriage.

"Carl and Kirsty had a fiery relationship when they were both quite young and, in his crazy head, he thinks this is the only woman for him.

"He's been inside for five-and-a-half years and he's put her on a pedestal. She's all he's had to focus on and Kirsty has become an object of this freedom he was dreaming about in prison."

He added: "I wouldn't mess with a man like Carl - I would stay indoors a lot more if I'd got on the wrong end of someone like him.

"He's someone who doesn't care and who'll go to any lengths to take people out."

EastEnders newcomer Daniel Coonan has made an immediate impact on screen as schemer Carl White, who shows the full force of his manipulative nature next week as the soap's big car crash storyline leads to Max Branning's arrest.

After only a few weeks on screen, the actor has landed a nomination for 'Best Bad Boy' at the 2013 Inside Soap Awards, which take place in London in October.

We recently gave Daniel a call to hear his thoughts on the nomination, the upcoming crash and Carl's ruthless ways…

How do you feel about being in the running for an Inside Soap Award?
"I was quite surprised, to be honest with you. I haven't been on the show for very long, so I didn't expect any nominations at all, but obviously I'm happy about it! Being up for 'Best Bad Boy' is quite amazing, especially as the nomination was announced before Carl's villainous storylines had even come to fruition on screen. You've seen glimpses of his nasty side so far, but there's much bigger stuff to come very soon."

How do you rate your chances against the other bad boys who have been nominated?
"I haven't even thought about it! I've been so busy filming these new stories which are going on with Carl, so I just haven't had time! (Laughs.) I spend all day on set, go home, cook some dinner and go to sleep! I'm just really pleased to be nominated."

Has it been easy to settle into EastEnders?
"It has, I think that I've settled in pretty quickly. Everyone is friendly at EastEnders and they almost become a surrogate family, because we all spend so much time together. We all get along and everyone looks out for each other. The time really has flown by."

How does Carl compare to your previous roles? Have you played bad boys before?
"I've started specialising in those roles, really! (Laughs.) If you're an actor, you might find that you always get the 'lover' type parts, or always get the villains. People peg you quite quickly, and I've been pegged as a villain. I'm quite happy about that, though, because I like playing them!

"The interesting thing about playing villains is that you can never guess what they're going to do next, because they're capable of doing anything to get what they want. In that sense, villains can go to a lot of different places story-wise. I think those parts are also more fun and exciting to watch, because they don't operate in the usual social boundaries. They make up their own laws as they go along."

Being on Twitter, what kind of reaction have you seen to Carl so far?
"It's been overwhelmingly positive. I'm quite new to Twitter. I only joined up because there were quite a few fake accounts for me on there, and my mum even started following one of them. Since setting up an account, I've had so many lovely messages from people who say they love watching Carl.

"It's made me quite buoyant about playing the part. You can never predict how people are going to react to your character, especially on a soap which is watched by so many people. I'm glad people are finding him fun to watch."

Would you say there's more to Carl than being a bad boy?
"We've already seen the scenes with Carl's mother, who's quite a dominating and horrible character, so we know that he's had demons within his own family. There's a possibility that Carl wants to have a family of his own and go legit in the long-term, but whether he's capable of doing that is another thing!

"I don't believe in just playing one-dimensional characters. There's got to be layers and there are always reasons behind why people do what they do. When it comes to Carl, he's had a very troubled background.

"There's a bit of nice in him, but he won't be taking any cookery holidays anytime soon! He's interested in dominating, making money and having influence. Carl won't ever be good until he gets those things."

When it comes to next week's car crash, why is Carl scheming against Phil?
"Carl has recognised that Phil is the person he needs to deal with, as Phil is a major barrier to getting what he wants. There are two ways of going about that - trying to do business with Phil, or taking him out altogether…

"The scenes were fantastic to film. I had to be inside the car and they put a detonator on the window. The window went through while myself and the stuntman were in the car. I was a little bit nervous about that, but I didn't have much time to think about it!"

Had you done stunt work before?
"Yes, I had. I did a shoot in Cuba once where they were blowing up a market behind me. That was a bit more scary, because the charges on the market stalls behind me were massive! It was so heavy to film, but I had to be cool as a cucumber in the script and pretend that nothing was about to happen! I love all that stuff, as it just adds a different dimension to the job."

What's it like to work with Steve McFadden, who plays Phil?
"He's a real legend and sometimes I can't quite believe that I'm working with him. We have chats about various things. Steve is a real outdoors man and he loves fishing. I sit there thinking, 'I can't believe I'm chatting to Phil Mitchell!' But he's a real pro and if we've got scenes to do, we just get on with the job."

How about working with Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian?
"Adam is a lovely guy. He was the person who put me on Twitter and got people following me. We've also organised to do a charity football match in the autumn. He's a really friendly and extroverted person.

"It is slightly strange when you join EastEnders and recognise all these faces who you've been watching over the years. I've been watching Adam since I was 11 years old. But now we're all just mates."

Do you think Carl has any chance of winning Kirsty back?
"Carl wants to win Kirsty back, but he also realises that she's been mistreated by Max. He recognises that she's not happy in the relationship, so he fervently believes that he can get her back. Although they had a troubled relationship themselves, they did have moments of extreme happiness and excitement too.

"Saying that, Carl is a troubled guy and Kirsty may want to swerve him as she knows he's not the type of guy who's just going to change overnight. Carl thinks that he's the knight in shining armour coming to rescue her, but the truth of the situation is probably very different."

Is he capable of treating Kirsty well, or would it all end in tears?
"I think there'll always be tears! If Carl got back together with Kirsty, he would treat her like a goddess and she'd have everything she wanted. But at the same time, he'd probably have problems dealing with the fact that she's very independent and is her own person. Kirsty wants to do what she wants to do.

"I wouldn't say Carl is a bully, but he sees himself as the provider and the head of the relationship. In that sense, he's old-fashioned and a bit misguided. They're both very strong-willed characters, so if they did get back together, it would definitely be a fiery relationship…"

EastEnders cast members have been filming at a quarry today (September 3) for big scenes which see the tables turn on bad boy Carl White.

Daniel Coonan, who plays Carl, has been working with Jake Wood (Max Branning) and Steve McFadden (Phil Mitchell) for the on-location shoot.

Viewers know that Carl battles to be top dog on Albert Square this week as his ruthless car crash scheme puts Phil in hospital and lands Max in jail.

However, Carl may not be in a position of power for long as a new storyline reportedly sees Max and Phil team up to kidnap him.

Dramatic scenes will show Carl bundled into the back of a van and taken to the quarry, where Phil and Max dig a grave and threaten to kill him, according to the Daily Star.

While the story remains unconfirmed by show bosses, McFadden has previously warned that Phil will fight back against Carl.

He recently said: "I can play high status and I can play low status. If you've seen the crack stuff and the alcoholic stuff, you know I dig deep and go low. Then what they give you is the potential to rise again and then you get high and you go low again. That's soap and that's Phil, so you know if he's usurped it will give me a chance to come back and take back over.

"I am not hanging on to some alter ego of who Phil ought to be and insisting that he can't get turned over, because he should be turned over so he gets a chance to fight back. When you truly know someone and they lose it all, then they fight back from nowhere so you see the real strength of them then."

The quarry scenes will air later this year.

Daniel Coonan has said that he would like to see EastEnders' Carl White exit the show "in a blaze of glory", adding that every soap needs a baddie.

Coonan, who plays Walford bad boy Carl White, has starred in the BBC One soap since June.

However, it was recently revealed that the 38-year-old actor will be leaving the show before the end of the year.

Coonan told BT: "You know what, ideally he has to go out in a blaze of glory. That would be a kind of logical end for him. Either marry him off or blow him up!"

Speaking about needing a bad character in Walford, Coonan said: "In my opinion, a soap needs a bad guy. I'm not sure the producers want that any more, they want EastEnders to be about love and deceit.

"But I'm old school - you need a Frank Butcher, you need a bad guy to make a soap work - and they've got to be an absolute *******.

"It's been wicked fun playing Carl, because that's all he's been for six months."

Coonan also revealed that, before he exits, Carl tries to work with Phil Mitchell.

"He says, 'I could be your right-hand man' - but they both realise he's a bit too dark to get involved with. But he's probably going a bit mad because he can't get Kirsty back," explained Coonan, who added that he has had an "incredible time on the show".

"I've had loads of really positive reactions to Carl," he said. "If I go out to get my shopping, I'll be stopped four or five times - but everybody seems to really love the character.

"Sometimes you get the odd comment from cheeky builders who say things like, 'You need a slap, mate!' But overwhelmingly, people are so friendly."
