Cornell S John - Sam James

EastEnders has cast Cornell S John (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/celebrities/cornell-s-john/) as Dexter Hartman's father Sam James.

John - who has previously starred in the films Kidulthood and Adulthood - will join the BBC soap next month.

Ava and Dexter will be shocked when Sam returns following the death of his father, and is determined to get to know his son. Dexter has never met his father, who left a pregnant Ava when he went to get milk and never returned.

John said: "It's a great honour and pleasure to be joining the EastEnders family. I look forward to working with the cast and to Sam's adventures on the square... doof doof."

Lorraine Newman, executive producer of the soap, added: "We are delighted to have Cornell join the cast of EastEnders playing Sam. Cornell's powerful presence and natural gravitas will ensure he's a strong presence on screen.

"The addition of Sam gives us a solid family unit with Dexter and Ava. However, after such a long absence, sparks are sure to initially fly. Let's just hope he's got the milk!"

John's first scenes will air in May.

EastEnders newcomer Sam James vows to stick around in Walford on a long-term basis next week after sleeping with his ex Ava Hartman.

With his son Dexter repeatedly making it clear that he's not welcome in the area, Sam (Cornell S John) decides to leave as soon as the damage to his car has been fixed.

Dexter (Khali Best) is pleased to know that he'll only have to put up with his dad's presence for another two weeks. However, his negative attitude takes its toll on Sam and he finds himself seeking comfort from Ava…

After Sam and Ava (Clare Perkins) have slept together, they decide to keep Dexter in the dark about the change in their relationship.

The next day, Ava is lost for words when Sam reveals that he won't be leaving Walford after all as the previous night was too amazing.

Although wary of how Dexter would react if he knew, Ava soon starts to enjoy her reignited romance as Sam sneaks her into the B&B after they've been exchanging cheeky text messages all day. How long can they keep the secret from Dexter?

EastEnders airs these scenes next week on BBC One.

EastEnders newcomer Cornell S John has promised that there are surprises ahead involving his character Sam James.

Sam has been trying to secure a happy family life with ex-partner Ava Hartman (Clare Perkins) and their son Dexter (Khali Best) since he arrived on Albert Square in May.

Although Sam has found it relatively easy to get back in Ava's good books, Dexter has seemed reluctant to build any bridges with his estranged dad.

Speaking on ITV's Lorraine today, John laughed: "I'm trying very hard, because I've got 20 years to catch up on! I think it's nice to see, on TV especially, sons and dads trying to bond.

"My character's trying to get his feet under the table at the moment, and because he has history and unfinished business, a spark has been rekindled [with Ava]."

However, asked whether viewers have seen all sides to Sam yet, he replied: "With the history of 20 years of absence, he's had to keep his cards close to his chest. He's trying to do that. There are a couple of big twists around the corner."

The actor added that he has experienced strong reactions both for and against Sam.

He laughed: "It's kind of interesting. It's good to see a black family come together, and a son and dad trying to bond. There was a young lady the other day who was calling me for walking out on Ava, and then a gentleman who was saying, 'You've got to talk to your son better, your son's got to show respect!'

"There's a mixed bag. The public let you know how they feel, as I'm finding out!"

Viewers will see Ava (Clare Perkins) left distraught as she learns that Sam (Cornell S John) only ever tracked her down because he wanted their son Dexter to donate a kidney to him.

The truth comes out as Dexter's loved ones gather to celebrate his birthday.

Laura, a nurse from the hospital, attends the party after flirting with Dexter (Khali Best). In a big revelation moment, Laura accidentally lets the truth slip to Ava, who is shocked to hear that Sam has been on the transplant list since March - two months before he first joined the Square.

Sam is quick to insist that Ava and Dexter mean the world to him, which is why he has stayed around after the transplant. However, when Ava asks whether Sam really loves her and he can't say yes, it's clear that their relationship has no future.

Despite trying to play happy families for Dexter's sake, Sam soon considers doing what he does best by running away.

When Ava catches Sam, she gives him an ultimatum - either he stays forever or leaves now. What will Sam decide?
