Helena Bonham Carter will play Elizabeth Taylor opposite The Hour star Dominic West as her on-off husband Richard Burton.
BBC bosses have ordered a feature-length special which tells the story of their ill-fated decision to appear together in a 1983 revival of Noel Coward’s stage play, Private Lives.
They believe West, who won plaudits for his portrayal of sex killer Fred West in ITV’s Appropriate Adult after becoming an international star on The Wire, will make a dashing Burton while Bonham Carter’s beauty makes her the perfect choice for Taylor.
The film, for BBC4, will open with a press conference to announce that the volatile ex-lovers are to appear together in the play.
It explores the tempestuous relationship between the pair as audiences pick up on what they imagine to be the parallels with Richard and Elizabeth’s own situation.
One insider said: “Burton & Taylor is a drama about one of the most fascinating, glamorous and tempestuous relationships of the 20th century, that of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, the two most famous movie stars of their day who played out every high and low of their love affair, their marriages and divorces right in the public eye.”
